1 Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary Professor: Dodson Semester: August 3-5, 2015 in Nashville Office: JS 133, Downstairs Course: MIS 6550 Dev CP Methodology Office Phone: (919) Time: Mon, 8AM - Wed, 4 PM mdodson@sebts.edu MIS 6550 Developing a Church Planting Methodology Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary seeks to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ by equipping students to serve the church and fulfill the Great Commission. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is a study of church planting models, practices, and principles with an emphasis on the analysis of missiological and sociological factors affecting the planting of a reproducing church. Attention will be given to designated North American mission areas, key systems, and the development of a strategic church planting plan. 3 semester hrs. OUTCOMES Upon course completion, the student should accomplish the following: 1. Grasp how biblical missiology drives church planting methodology. 2. Develop a working knowledge of various paradigms, models, and methods for NA church planting, and the ability to critique those in light of the biblical, theological, sociological, and practical principles. 3. Analyze key systems in the church planting process (reaching people, making disciples, building community, and developing leaders) and a basic framework for implementation. 4. Begin drafting and articulating a strategic methodology for church planting that is missiologically driven and culturally meaningful for a planter/church planting team s context. 5. Identify key issues in developing a launch strategy, early organization, and reproduction. Biblical Exposition: Demonstrate the ability to properly and effectively interpret, apply, and communicate the Scriptures. Theological Integration: Demonstrate the ability to understand and apply the doctrines of Christianity to life and ministry. Ministry Preparation: Demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and Christian disposition necessary for ministry and leadership in the church and the world. Critical Thinking and Communication: Demonstrate the ability to think critically, argue persuasively, and communicate clearly. 2 If students have read (interacted significantly) with any of the above, choose other texts with equivalent pages from the selective bibliography or suggest other church planting texts (w/ professor s approval). REQUIREMENTS 1. REQUIRED TEXTS & REVIEWS (20%) Read all course texts and write a 1-2 page critical review for two of the books (thesis in 1-2 sentences, outline key points that support the thesis, critique the book, and outline key points of application). Each student will provide a statement of completed reading and submit the reviews via moodle. Due Saturday, August 1 st. 2. SCRIPTURE & JOURNALING (10%) Read or listen to Acts 2 times by Saturday, August 1 st. Take notes by journaling and reflecting on insights and questions gleaned from interacting with the biblical text, especially as it relates to transformative personal and church ministry. Include thoughts on how the biblical text intersects with class texts. The journal does not need to be submitted. However, the journal should display multiple entries over a period of time and be equivalent to a minimum of 3 pages (single space entries being done in a Word doc). This will require moodle verification. 3. THREADED DISCUSSIONS (10%) The class will participate in threaded discussions before and after the conference in moodle. The professor will post a starter question or case study. Each student is expected to respond to the question, respond to at least 2 classmates, and respond to questions directed to them by others. Be certain to read what others have written carefully. Responses should reflect thoughtful understanding of class content, reading, and the subject matter. Postings should be at least two paragraphs in length but should not exceed four paragraphs. The professor may add a final word at the end of each discussion. 4. CLASS & CONFERENCE (30%) Class will meet from 8 AM to NOON on Monday, August 3 rd before the conference and Wednesday, August 5 th from 7 AM-4 PM after the conference IN NASHVILLE. Attend all sessions of the SEND NA Conference, including the breakout sessions. Journal on every session by recording (a) the main point of each session (in one sentence), (b) list key subpoints, (c) summarize key insights learned from each session, (d) list two questions each session raised for you, and (e) how each session will impact your life and/or ministry. This should be at least 5-6 pages and turned in by the end of the day Monday, August 10 th via moodle. 5. RESEARCH PAPER (30%) Each student will write a page research paper on some aspect of the church planting process which interacts with the class materials and readings. Students are encouraged to interview church planting leaders and include them as sources. Papers will be graded equally using 5 categories (see sample guidelines at end): Clear Thesis & Thoughts (writing with precision & clarity), Argues Persuasively (defends thesis & points clearly/persuasively), Sources & Insights (excellent use of sources & insights), Plan/Style/Structure (paper laid out clearly/precisely), and Grammar & Form (proper grammar, spelling, and form). Just because you write a paper does not mean you automatically get a good grade. Due Friday, August 21 st. Topic Examples: Keys to Developing an Effective Process of Evangelistic Disciple-Making, Evaluating the XYZ Church Planting Model, Balancing Organic & Organizational in Church Planting, Keys to Entering a Context to Church Plant, Establishing 2-3 Key Systems in a Church Plant, etc. Develop a thesis based on one of these topics. Students are strongly encouraged to utilize the Writing Center. Helpful resources are linked in moodle and appointments can be set up directly by contacting the Writing Center located in the SEBTS library. 2

However, I encourage you to discuss the matters in this class not only with your spouse, but also with others in this class, your pastor, and church if possible. Learning is in community. Since this is a 3 hour course, the professor expects the student to complete 2250 minutes of direct faculty interaction and 4500 minutes of work outside of class. Reading and writing assignments for this course have been calculated with these requirements in mind.
