C. Fred Dickason I. Their Original Creation A. Agent of Creation Gen. 1 Psalm 148:2-5 Shows angels (along with the sun moon and stars) were created John 1:1-3 show that Jesus Christ the Eternal Word created ALL things angels would be included in ALL Col. 1:16 Paul specifically declares this truth, thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers Eph. 6:12, Rom. 8:38 use the same terms apply them to angels Col. 1:17 by Him all things consist Page 3 Angels, Salem Bible Church, Adult Sunday School

B. Act of Creation Scripture implies that the angels were all created at or near the same time. Not eternal Did not evolve and they were not formerly men Were created as angels Each a direct creation from God they do not procreate, Matt. 22:28-30 Called sons of God Job 1:6, 2:1, Never sons of angels as we see in humankind Gal. 3:26 ye are all the children [Gr. sons] of God by faith in Christ Jesus Eph. 2:8-10 created in Christ Jesus v. 10 Luke 3:38 Adam, which was the son of God Some things will be true if angels created individually: *No ancestors *No families *No departed spirits of men become angels *No offspring *No such things as a baby angel Exact time not certain Job 38:7 When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? When? Job 38:4 when I laid the foundations of the earth Ex. 20:11, Gen. 1:1 Angels appear to be created by direct command or sanction of God, Psalm 148:2-5 C. Aim of Creation Primary purpose: that they might glorify God and His Christ, Col. 1:16 Rev. 4:6-11 for thy pleasure they are and were created Ezek. 28:12-15 Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty Heb. 1:7 Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire II. Their Original Condition A. Holy State All angels were created good and holy, Gen. 1:31, 2:3 It appears at creation all were holy and rejoiced, Psalm 148:2-5 Mark 8:38, with the holy angels Not only created holy, but they were in a holy environment In God s presence Matt. 18:10 angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven In the holy heaven Mark 13:32 the angels which are in heaven There are now two moral classes of angels The Elect, I Tim. 2:1 The Evil, Matt. 25:41 Page 4 Angels, Salem Bible Church, Adult Sunday School

B. Creaturely State 1. Angels had great privileges Enjoyed God in a holy relationship Created directly by God Each created an individual Probably no two alike Knew God and could worship Him in beauty and holiness, Ps. 148:1-2 At His bidding would congregate before Him, see Job 1:6, 2:1 They beheld in wonder His creative works, Job 38:7 Granted the inestimable privilege of serving the God of all creation as quick as the wind and as fervent as fire, Heb. 1:7 Probably given insight concerning God s purpose of the ages 2. Angels have certain limitations Limitation of space Not omnipresent Primarily spirit in nature yet not in all places at once (or even many) Must move spatially from one location to another, Dan. 9:21-23; 10:10-14 Angels then, are localized Limited in power Greater than man, II Pet. 2:11 Can control some elements of nature, Rev. 7:1; 16:8-9 Limited in authority, Job 1:12, 2:6 Sometimes taxed in performance of their duties, struggle of elect and evil, Rev. 12:7 They stand in need of assistance, Dan. 10:13 Angels are limited in intellect They do not know all, Matt. 24:36, I Pet. 1:11-12 They are limited in holiness Theirs was not absolute and unshakeable as God s Some fell into sin, Isa. 14:12; Rev. 12: Angels are responsible to God As creatures must answer to the Creator God governs by moral laws Failure and rebellion require judgment Satan will be judged, Ezek. 28:12-19; Matt. 25:41 John 16:11 3. The Nature of Angels I. Personality A Definition of Personality 1. Angels and the Attributes of Personality The definition is not rooted in man but in what God is Each member or person of the Trinity manifests Himself as a person in 3 ways: Intellect, emotion, and will These are the 3 attributes of personality Page 5 Angels, Salem Bible Church, Adult Sunday School

B. Description of Angels Personality 1. Intellect: Angels, divine, and human beings possess an intellect that is far superior to that of animals. Holy angels possess great wisdom, II Sam. 14:20 They have the ability to communicate intelligent thoughts Gen 19:1-2 Conversation with Lot Matt. 1:20-21; 2:13, Speaking to Joseph Luke 1:11-20, To Zacharias Luke 1:26-38 To Mary Luke 4:33-35 the demon used intelligent language to speak to Jesus As noted before, they do not know everything. Matt. 24:36 Do not know the hour of the Second coming Eph. 3:10 They are learning from observing the church I Pet. 1:9-12 Mystified by God s saving of sinful men 2. Emotion: Angels possess and experience emotions Job 38:4-7 Great joy as the saw the earth created Isa. 6:3 Holy, holy, holy Rev. 12:7-12 Satan with experience great wrath when he is cast from heaven 3. Will: As some angels are good, and some are evil, at some point in time they had the opportunity to experience their own will in which way to go: follow God, follow Satan Heb. 1:6 Isaiah 14:14 II. Properties A. Spirit Beings Angels are in the class of spirit beings immaterial and incorporeal Heb. 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits Luke 8:2 healed of evil spirits and infirmities speaking here of a demon Luke 11:24, 26 the unclean spirit seven other spirits more wicked Angels have spatial limitations John 4:24 God is a Spirit this is what God essentially is Yet God is an infinite spirit Being uncreated Angels are finite spirit beings created therefore limited with regard to space Dan. 9:21-23 move swiftly from one place to another Dan. 10:10-14 delayed on his errand by another spirit being Time was involved here this shows they are localized Therefore: Angels have spatial and temporal limitations Not omnipresent (all at once) Nor ubiquitous (in many places at once) They are defined and with one location at a time always somewhere Page 6 Angels, Salem Bible Church, Adult Sunday School

B. Spiritual Bodies? 1. Type of bodies Scripture does not directly attribute bodies to angels At the same time they are creatures, so it seems conceivable that there would be some type of body Maybe there is a body that of some sort not known by men Paul gives some insight in I Cor. 15:44 Whatever the situation Angels are not usually visible And many can be in a small space, Luke 8:30 2. Gender Angels are not a race they do not procreate, Matt. 22:28-30 Although they are sexless in the human sense they do not appear to be neuter Luke 24:4 They are sometimes described as men Mark 16:5-6 They are referred to with the masculine pronoun When they appear it is usually in the form of a man (Gen. 18:2, 22; Dan. 10:18) 3. Life span Angels are immortal Once created, they never cease to exist Not subject to death Lk. 20:36 Any body that they do possess is immortal and incorruptible C. Special Appearance 1. Freedom to appear Angels are normally invisible, Col. 1:16 Yet, the do have the ability to appear on occasion, Luke 1:11-13 Angels have appeared in: Dreams as with Joseph (Mt. 1:20) Visions As with Isaiah s seeing Jehovah (but angels as well) (Isa. 6:1-6) Supernatural vision Elisha and a young man (II Kings 6:17) They have also appeared to natural sight Recognized as angels, Dan. 8:15-17 Sometimes their identity is withheld (completely or temporarily) Num. 22:23, 31 Heb. 13:2 2. Forms of appearance Many recorded appearances in Scripture Generally they appear in the form of men So realistic they are mistaken for men Abraham welcomed 3 men Gen. 18:1-8 When two went to Lot Lot invited them to stay with him (Gen. 19:1-8) Generally appear as males Young men, Mark 16:5; Luke 24:4 Page 7 Angels, Salem Bible Church, Adult Sunday School

Only possible exception maybe Zech. 5:9 uncertain interpretation Not as in Acts 1:10 clearly angels and male Some have a youthful appearance, Mk. 16:5 Appear in differing numbers One Lk. 1:26-29 Two John 20:12, Acts 1:10 Three Gen. 18:1-2 Multitude Lk. 2:13 Sometimes an angel will be in the form of an unusual man, Daniel 10:5-6 The angels the two Marys saw at the tomb frightened them Matthew 28:3 like lightning, garments as snow Matthew 28:4-5 the angel has to calm the women from their fear When seen in Heaven, angels seem to have some characteristics as men, but mostly they appear in the form of unusual living creatures Rev. 4:6-8 notes faces, wings, eyes Rev. 10:1-3 clothed with clouds, rainbow, face as sun Rev. 15:6 clothed in pure and white linen, and girded with golden girdles Rev. 18:1 the earth was lightened with his glory 3. Force of appearance When they appear various effects on men Joseph, Matt. 1:19-24 Mary, Matt. 1:18-25 Zacharias, Luke 1:12 Shepherds, Luke 2:9 Roman guards, Matt. 28:4 Daniel, 10:8 Animals can see angels if God desires Num. 22:26-31 D. Spiritual Wings? Common conception: Angels have wings Does this agree with Scripture? On some occasions Isaiah s vision of Jehovah with seraphim, Isaiah 6:2, 6 Another class with wings cherubim, Ezekiel 1:5-8 Wings seem to provide swift movement, Ezekiel 1:13-14 Their movement caused noise, Ezekiel 1:24 So we see two classes of angels do have wings Angels are noted to fly, Daniel 9:21; Luke 1:19 John saw angels fly, Revelation 14:6-7 May symbolize the reality of their swiftness to fulfill God s wishes as wind and fire do in Heb. 1:7 Page 8 Angels, Salem Bible Church, Adult Sunday School

E. Spiritual Condition 1. Classification Angels fall into two spiritual or moral categories: Holy or Elect Mark 8:38 1 Timothy 5:21 Evil or Unclean spirits Luke 8:2 Luke 11:24, 26 The angels of God John 1:51 The Devil and his angels or the dragon and his angels Matthew 25:41 Revelation 12:7 Revelation 12:4 (Possibly 1/3 of angels are Satan s) 2. Cause What caused this separation and when? First consideration Angels were created in a holy state, Colossians 1:16-17 No creature NOT created by Him [Christ, Son], John 1:1-3 God cannot be directly involved in the creation of evil He is holy, Habakkuk 1:13 So it is obvious all created with a holy nature Next consider the moral choice of angels: to do evil or remain holy Some chose to use their God-given power to rebel against God Scripture pictures Satan as the leader of this defection Pride seems to be a key here I Tim. 3:6 Isa. 14:12-17 He failed in this! But in his attempt he drew a great number of angels who became loyal to him. Matthew 25:41 3. Continuation Once put to the test, (loyal or rebel) their decision seems to have been made permanent Their condition: nonviolable or nonredeemable Consider the term elect A period of probation is implied We deduce: That the elect remain fixed in holiness and That evil angels remain fixed in wickedness (destined to the lake of fire see Matt. 25:41) We deduce then that evil angels are nonredeemable permanently in an evil state with no hope of redemption What evidence is there for this? 1. No record of any angel being delivered from sin John 16:11 Colossians 2: A definite statement from Hebrews Hebrews 2:16 Page 9 Angels, Salem Bible Church, Adult Sunday School

3. Evident from the very nature of angels different from man s nature Hebrews 2:14-17 Christ became our mediation taking on the nature of man participated in our humanity Angels are not a race but individual creations of God no procreation 4. Conflict Division (elect vs. evil) came as a result of rebellion The separation of some from God introduced Spiritual enmity and warfare Conflict between good and evil angels Daniel 10:13 Daniel 12:1 Revelation 12:7-9 There is also warfare in the human sphere The Devil and his demons wrestle with God s people on Earth discourage defeat spiritual advances It is real See Eph. 6:11-18 III. Powers The power of angels very great A. Source of Power The power of angels is great Originated in God Limited by God 1. Granted by God Angels recognize God as the source of their being and power, Rev. 4:8, Governed by God Power is limited by God s creation but also His control Angelic power exercised by God s will Gen. 19:12-16 II Sam. 24:14-17 Review the judgment in Revelation Angelic power barred by God s will II Sam. 24:13-16 Revelation 7:1-3 Even Satan seems to be the greatest of all angels is limited by God, see Job 1:12, 2:6 Satan s forces restrained and defeated by good angels (in the will of God), see Rev. 12:7-9 B. Spheres of Power 1. In relation to the human world Angels may express human function They appear as men, 18:2 They walk like men, 18:2, 16; 19:1 Talk as men, 18:9 Eat as men, 18:8 Page 10 Angels, Salem Bible Church, Adult Sunday School

Angelic power is known to excel human force David, Psalms 103:20 Peter, II Peter 2:11 In gathering believers at Christ s return, Matt. 24:30-31 Entering a lock prison to release a chained Peter, Acts 12:7-11 To roll away the huge stone sealing Christ s tomb, Matt. 28:2; Mark 16:3-5 Angels are used by God to exclude human wickedness Restrained the wickedness of Sodom Rescued Lot, smote the wicked men with blindness, Gen. 18:22; 19:1, An angel prevented Balaam from pursuing his intent against Israel, Num. 22:22-35 (Angel of Jehovah) God uses angels to execute human judgment Consider David s sin in numbering the people Though provoked by Satan, I Chron. 21:1 Permitted by God, II Sam. 24:1 The sin was David s, II Sam. 24:10 Angels execute judgment to punish God s enemies Herod, Acts 12:23 immediately the angel of the Lord smote him Sodom and Gomorrah, Gen. 19:1, 13, Leader of Assyria, 185,000 men, II Kings 19:35 The superhuman power of angels extends to exercise human deliverance Lot, Gen. 19 Peter, Acts 12 Hebrew children, Dan. 3:28 2. In relation to the material world With startling power they control, in certain instances, the elements of nature Holding back the four winds, Rev. 7:1 Power over scorching heat, Rev. 16:8-9 Destroy natural resources in the Great Tribulation Destroy 1/3 of the earth s vegetation, salt and fresh water, and water life, Rev. 8, 9 3. In relation to the angelic world With respect to their own persons, angels exercise certain powers. Choice Active obedience or rebellion Power of communication Satan shared his purpose with other angels to entice them to follow, Eze. 28:16; Rev. 12:3-4 Relay messages to other angels, Rev. 6:5, 7:1-3 With respect to peers, Command other angels, Rev. 7:1-3; 14:17-18 Battle opposing angels, Dan. 10:13; Rev. 12:7-8 One great angel, at God s leading, will lay hold and bind Satan, Rev. 20: The Position of Angels I. In Relation to the Son of God A. Contrast in Essence The Bible clearly contrasts the nature of Christ and of angels. Page 11 Angels, Salem Bible Church, Adult Sunday School

1. Statements of Christ s Nature He is the eternal Son; they are created by Him John 1:1-3 Note five compact statements from this passage (John 1:1-3 AV) Scripture Comment 1. In the beginning was the Word, Christ s continued existence before the creation of the world 2. and the Word was with God, His existence in God s presence as a distinct person 3. and the Word was God. His essential equality with God the Father 4. The same was in the beginning with God. His eternal fellowship with the Father 5. All things were made by him; and without him was His all-inclusive creatorship not any thing made that was made. 2. Significance of Christ s Names Christ is titled God s only begotten Son (John 1:14, 18; 3:16; I John 4:9) Angels are called the sons of God as a large class (Job 1:6; 2:1) Christ is unique eternally begotten of the Father without beginning (Micah 5:2; Rev. 1:8-18) An angel is one of many of the same class Christ is the image of God in the exact likeness and counterpart of God (Col. 1:15; Heb. 1:3) Angels were created in the image of God reflecting Him only in that they were created persons with holiness Christ is titled the first-born of all creation (Col. 1:15) Christ is prior to and sovereign over all creation including His created angels (Col. 1:15-16) Angels and men are to worship Him the fullness of the Godhead in bodily form (Col. 2:9; Heb. 1:6) Jesus, the Son, is God not to be confused with angels No angel has the right to be worshiped! B. Contrast in Position Much can be learned from the author of Hebrews First he lays the foundation Chap. 1: He has the fullness of God s glory, v. 3 The exact likeness of God s person, v. 3 The Creator of all, v. 2 The great Redeemer, v. 3 He then speaks of the Son as, v. 4 The name God has given Him shows His superior position, v. 5, 8 Again think of Colossians 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. 1. The dignity of the God-man Hebrews 1:5-14 uses seven Old Testament quotations to demonstrate that Christ is superior to angels (a) His dignity as the eternal Son Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee v. 5 (Ps. 2:7) Refers to Christ s eternal dignity as the eternally begotten Son of God (b) His dignity as the Son of David I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son v. 5, From the Davidic covenant (II Sam. 7:14) Emphasizes His continued dignity as divine inheritor and fulfiller He is a genuine human, yet genuine Deity Page 12 Angels, Salem Bible Church, Adult Sunday School

(c) His dignity as the reigning Son And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him v. 6 Here is His millennial dignity as the ruling Son of man (d) His superiority to angels And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire v. 7 Quote of Psalm 104:4 concerning the nature of angels The Son is superior because they are spirit beings created to serve God They serve the Son also (e) His dignity as eternal Deity and Messiah vs. 8-9 The Son is eternal not created Is truly God, quote is from Ps. 45:6-7 (f) His dignity as the eternal, immutable Creator vs Quotes Ps. 102:25-27 (g) His dignity as the victorious King-Priest vs From Ps. 110:1 Nothing in the angelic class can lay claim to any of the above ascriptions of positional dignity They belong only to God s unique Son eternally begotten born into the Davidic line, destined to reign on David s throne forever. 2. The dominion of the God-man Hebrews 1 presents Christ superior to angels as the Son of God Hebrews 2 as the Son of man As God-man ruler of the future kingdom of God on earth Angels are not assigned dominion of the coming kingdom Christ as the God-man will rule and reign, Hebrews 2:7-9 Christ is sovereign, not angels 3. The deliverance of the God-man Christ not only superior as Sovereign, but as Savior He is the Redeemer As such, He did not identify Himself with angels, but He took on humanity And redeemed them by His cross, Hebrews 2:9-10 In this He undid Satan, Hebrews 2: The defeat by the God-man We must consider the moral power of angel, if we realize that only Christ alone could overcome Satan and his armies in the battle for the souls of men It also shows us the power of Christ; He is the victor over sin and Satan through the cross Colossians paints a picture of a Roman victor, Colossians 2:15 The cross of the God-man defeated and judged evil angelic force 5. The designation of the God-man as Lord over all Christ s death and resurrection won the victory over sin, death and Satan. He is exalted to the right hand of God in Heaven See what Paul wrote, Philippians 2:9-11 Christ is highly exalted He is over all, Ephesians 1:20-21 Page 13 Angels, Salem Bible Church, Adult Sunday School

II. In Relation to Man A. Distinction Between Men and Angels 1. Distinct station Hebrews 2:5-7 A quote from Psalm 8:4-6 Describes man as a little lower than the angels - thereby distinguishes men from angels Simply put here - man is lower than the angels in that his nature is weaker, subject of death (unlike angels) 2. Distinct service Angels are presented as a class of beings sent forth from God s presence to minister to redeemed men inheritors of God s salvation Men have been given the responsibility of preaching the Gospel not angles In the coming kingdom, man will rule over angels Thus, men and angels are distinct, as seen in their service B. Similarity of Men and Angels Men and angels are alike in some respects Both limited by time and space Both are dependent upon God for existence and well-being Both have responsibilities and are accountable to God, John 16:11; I Cor. 6:3; Heb. 9:27 C. Differences Between Men and Angels Angels are essentially spirit, Heb. 1:14 Are they not all ministering spirits Men are both spirit and material body, James 2:26 Angels are not a race they do not procreate, Matt. 22:28-30 Angels are greater in intelligence, strength, and swiftness, II Pet. 2:11 Man is subject to death Glorified man will judge angels, I Corinthians 6:3 Angels do not become human, and visa versa Page 14 Angels, Salem Bible Church, Adult Sunday School

6. The Angel of Jehovah I. His Identity A. His Identity with Jehovah Acts as a unique messenger of God in Old Testament times, found from Abraham to Zechariah 1. His peculiar title Elohim was used of both the true God and the gods of the heathen Jehovah (Yahweh) was reserved for the God of Israel, the eternally self-existent One o The Creator o Entered into a covenant relationship with His people Angels are called sons of God (bene elohim), but never sons of Jehovah 2. His personal identification From His appearances we notice He is consistently presented as Jehovah Hagar, Gen. 16:7-13, He promised to do himself what God alone can do Moses, Ex. 3:2-14 Gideon, Judges 6:11-14 Manoah and his wife, Judges 13 B. His Distinction From Jehovah It appears the same person is in view in every mention of this special title, Angel of Jehovah Yet while identified as Jehovah, presented as distinct from Jehovah 1. He intercedes to Jehovah Zechariah 1:9-13, The man among the myrtle trees is the Angel of Jehovah 2. He calls upon Jehovah Zechariah 3, Cleansing of Joshua, defending this priestly leader C. His Identity with Christ 1. Christ s essential nature Christ, the Eternal Son, is Jehovah in essence, a distinct person within the Trinity Isaiah 40:3 Matthew 3:3 John 1:1 John 1:2 2. Christ s economic function Here are some considerations: a. The Second Person the Son is the visible God of the New Testament, John 1:14 Accordingly, the Son was the visible manifestation of God in the Old Testament b. The Angel of the LORD no longer appeared after Christ s incarnation c. They were both sent by God and had similar ministries: Revealing, Guiding, Judging d. This angel could not be the Father or the Spirit They never take bodily form II. His Ministries A. Revelation Disclosed God s name, Jehovah, Ex. 3:2, 4, 6, 14 In the New Testament, Christ is the permanent revelation of God in bodily form John 1:14 John 1:18 Page 19 Angels, Salem Bible Church, Adult Sunday School

He also revealed God s name by word and in person, John 17:6 B. Commission Commissioned Moses, Ex. 3:7-8 Commissioned Gideon, Judges 6:11-23 Commissioned Sampson, Judges 13:1-21 Called and commissioned His disciples (and us) to deliver the gospel, Matt. 28:19-20; John 20:21 C. Deliverance He delivered His people in the above Jesus delivers from fear and death and sin s guilt for those that trust in Him now, Eph. 1:7 And Israel, Rom. 11:25-26 D. Protection David, Psalms 34:7 Hezekiah, 2 Kings 19:35 Jesus is our Protector, Hebrews 13:5 E. Intercession Israel, Zechariah 1:12 Our High Priest, Hebrews 7:25 F. Advocacy In Zechariah, defends imperfect believers from the accusations of Satan Zechariah 3:1 Zechariah 3:5 Jesus Christ the Righteous our Advocate, 1 John 2:1 G. Confirmation of the covenant Abraham, Genesis 22:15-17 Christ was sent to confirm the promises to Israel for their deliverance, forgiveness of sin for all Matthew 26:28 Romans 15:8 Hebrews 9:15 H. Comfort Hagar, Genesis 16:7-13 Summary The Angel of Jehovah equal in essence with Jehovah yet distinct from Jehovah Christ came with comfort and blessing, Luke 4:16-19 And minister to the outcasts, John 9:35-38 The only answer to the dilemma is that He is a preincarnate appearance of our Lord Jesus Christ, the eternal Son I. Judgment When David provoked to number Israel, I Chron. 21:1, During the Tribulation, the Lord Jesus shall judge His people Israel along with unbelieving Earth-dwellers Matt. 24:44-51; 25:32-42 II Thes. 1:5-10 Page 20 Angels, Salem Bible Church, Adult Sunday School

Numbered by Men and Stars Perhaps as many angels as all people of all time, Matt. 18:10 Compare with the number of stars: Job 38:7 Psalm 148:1-3 Rev. 9:1-2 Rev. 12:3-4 C. Beyond Numbering Rev. 5:11, Calculate two choices: 101 million, or 100 trillion could simply mean: beyond comprehension Heb. 12:22, An innumerable company of angels II. Evidenced in Many Assemblies Job 1:6 implies organization Job 38:7, they were gather in order here B. Evidenced in Military Administration God s angels organized under the archangel Michael He leads an army in order against Satan s angels in the Tribulation, Rev. 12:7-9 Satan s army also well organized. Note the probable demons (with a king), Rev. 9:11 C. Evidenced in Meaningful Designations Various levels in the organization of angels are seen in several titles: Thrones, dominions, principalities, authorities, powers, angels, world rulers, wicked spirits (Rom. 8:38; I Cor. 15:24; Eph. 1:21; 3:10; 6:12; Col. 1:16; 2:10, 15) III. Rank Scripture seems to show that there is structure to the angelic world, both elect and evil, But we are left without specifics it just adds to our wonder of God s creation A. Ranking by Class There seems to be larger categories of angels classes Some differences from class to class We looked at cherubim, seraphim, living creatures there appears to be ranks within these classes Page 21 Angels, Salem Bible Church, Adult Sunday School

Cherubim seem to hold highest associated with God s presence and glory Among these, Satan held the highest rank (Ezek. 28:12, 14, 16) Satan and his angels still retain some of their dignity and rank B. Development and Destiny of Angels I. In This Present Age Angels are capable of learning and developing A. Observing Salvation They have an intense desire to stoop down and peer into our wonderful salvation in Christ I Pet. 1:10-12 They marvel at God s grace in this age B. Observing Worship Angels evidently observe with interest the worship and order in the local church Paul emphasizes order and dignity in the assembly, particularly position of men and women, I Cor. 11:1-10 This is valid today; symbols my change, but women should respect the male leadership established by God for the family C. 29 10. Our Relationship to Angels Biblical truth must be consulted to understand our association and our attitude on angels. Key point the believer is in Christ, Rom. 6:1-10; Gal. 3:26-27 We share in His position and wealth before God We died with Him, we rose with His, and ascended with Him Not only perfectly accepted before God but our position puts us above angels I. Our Association with Angels A. Our Present Position Writer of Hebrew shows: Christ is better than angels, chaps. 1-2 Better than Moses, chap. 3 Better than Aaron and his sacrifices, chaps And says we are not come to Sinai, but in 12:22 says, But ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels, (Hebrews 12:22) The writer is speaking of the heavenly Jerusalem It will descend from heaven to earth for millennial kingdom, Revelation 21:10-11 We are there positionally now we are exalted with Christ, Rom. 8:30, Eph. 2:5-6 This links us with the innumerable company of angels; We are positionally above angels now B. Our Future Rule with Angels In the millennium, we will live and reign with Christ, Rev. 20:4-6 Apostles on 12 thrones, Matt. 19:28 We shall rule with Christ, I Cor. 6:2 But, we shall judge or rule over angels, I Cor. 6:3 When Christ brings us to glory He will have raised us over elect and evil angels Eph. 1:19-21 Heb. 2:5-10 II. Our Attitude Toward Angels A. We May Wonder at Angels 1. Respect their persons Bible shows men of God bowing in fear and awe in angel s presence Dan. 8:16-17 Dan. 10:1-18 We can also be in awe of their marvelous personalities, and power 2. Appreciate their ministries Angels do good for us, Heb. 1:14 3. Admire their example Incessant worship (see Pastor s book, How Angels Worship) Unswerving allegiance Urgent obedience Page 29 Angels, Salem Bible Church, Adult Sunday School

B. We May Not Worship Angels Though exalted and awesome, we are forbidden from worshipping them 1. Forbidden by example Angels worship God alone! Isa. 6:1-4 Rev. 4:6-11 Rev. 5:8-14 Nowhere in Scripture are we commanded to worship angels Angels are commanded to worship the Son, Heb. 1:6 2. Forbidden by revelation Ex. 20:1-6, exclusive worship Col. 2:18 Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels 3. Forbidden by the angels themselves Rev. 22:9 Rev. 19:10 I Tim. 2:5-6 One mediator, Christ Jesus 11. Activities of Evil Angels I. Their Activities Toward God A. They Oppose God They have tried to defeat His will They continue to seek to overthrow Him as ultimate sovereign Satan, at the beginning, Isaiah 14:14 Desired to be the ultimate sovereign Evil angels war against holy angels against those God has appointed to influence in the government and affairs of men Paul was repeatedly hindered in his work by Satan regarding the work in Thessalonica There is no doubt that evil angels continue to hinder God s servants today. B. Attempt to thwart God s will actually do His will 1. Attack on Job Satan s attack on Job to get him to curse God accomplished God s will God wanted Job tested to demonstrate at truth to Satan, Job 1:8-10 God initiated the test, 1:8 This test gives Job an opportunity to honor God To show the faithfulness of his allegiance The Accuser insinuates Job is a hypocrite (in it for what he can get) v. 9 Remove hedge Job s true face would show v. 10 The attack is actually on God the only way the accuser could be proven false is through Job Page 30 Angels, Salem Bible Church, Adult Sunday School
