Christology Week 4 Continuing: the Biblical evidence demonstrates that Jesus was God. We looked at evidences from John s gospel. Let s take a quick look at some of the evidence found in the book of Matthew -- Jesus and others understood Him as deity. Read Matt. 9:1-7 11: Now when John, while imprisoned, heard of the works of Christ, he sent word by his disciples and said to Him, Are You the Expected One, or shall we look for someone else? Jesus answered and said to them, Go and report to John what you hear and see: the BLIND RECEIVE SIGHT and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the POOR HAVE THE GOSPEL PREACHED TO THEM. And blessed is he who does not take offense at Me. Read Matthew 14:22-33 Matthew 25: But when the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on His glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before Him; and He will separate them from one another, as the shepherd separates the sheep from the goats; and He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on His right, Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. The importance of His two natures He must be fully human and fully divine in order to complete the plan of redemption determined for Him before the foundation of the world. 1) Man is the one that sinned, man must pay the penalty. ( Read Romans 5:12-21)
2) But the sin was against God, so only God could bring a sacrifice of infinite value and worth. Mk 14:22-24; Mt 26:26-28; Lk 22: Matthew - While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is My body. And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, Drink from it, all of you; for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. Mark - While they were eating, He took some bread, and after a blessing He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, Take it; this is My body. And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. And He said to them, This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God. Luke -- And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me. And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood. 3) Only God could bear the wrath of God, redemptively. Hebrews 10: But in those sacrifices there is a reminder of sins year by year. For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Therefore, when He comes into the world, He says, SACRIFICE AND OFFERING YOU HAVE NOT DESIRED, BUT A BODY YOU HAVE PREPARED FOR ME; IN WHOLE BURNT OFFERINGS AND sacrifices FOR SIN YOU HAVE TAKEN NO PLEASURE. THEN I SAID, BEHOLD, I HAVE COME (IN THE SCROLL OF THE BOOK IT IS WRITTEN OF ME) TO DO YOUR WILL, O GOD. After saying above, SACRIFICES AND OFFERINGS AND WHOLE BURNT OFFERINGS AND sacrifices FOR SIN YOU HAVE
NOT DESIRED, NOR HAVE YOU TAKEN PLEASURE in them (which are offered according to the Law), then He said, BEHOLD, I HAVE COME TO DO YOUR WILL. He takes away the first in order to establish the second. By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 4) Jesus knew and conquered our temptations, so He could be our mediator. Heb. 4:15 - For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. WEEK 5 Once we ve settle our thinking concerning the person of Jesus and His divine & human natures, we can move into a study of His works. Sometimes, His work of salvation, His most important work (the doctrine of soteriology) is considered as a separate topic in Systematic Theology. The best way to consider His works is to take them chronologically, but in order to do that, we must consider His pre-existence, prior to His incarnation. The Pre-Existence of Christ The importance of pre-existence (according to Charles Ryrie) 1. If Christ came into existence at His birth, then no eternal Trinity exists. 2. If Christ was not pre-existent then He could not be God, because, among other attributes, God is eternal. 3. If Christ was not pre-existent then He lied, because He claimed to be. So then the question arises, what else did He lie about?
The Evidence of Pre-Existence Read John 1:1-18 And John 1:30 This is He on behalf of whom I said, After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me. John 3:12-13 If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man. John 3: He who comes from above is above all, he who is of the earth is from the earth and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all. What He has seen and heard, of that He testifies; and no one receives His testimony. He who has received His testimony has set his seal to this, that God is true. For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for He gives the Spirit without measure. The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand. He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him. Read John 8:48-59 In John 10:30, Jesus claimed equality with God I and the Father are one. If God is eternal, then Jesus must be equally eternal. In John 17:5 He claimed equal glory with the Father before the world And now, glorify Thou Me together with Thyself, Father, with the glory which I had with Thee before the world was. Colossians 1: For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image (eikon) of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities all
things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. In Colossians 2:9, Paul claimed For in Him all the fulness of Deity dwells in bodily form. Hebrews 1: God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world. And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. In Philippians 2:6, Paul said that Christ had the same nature as God although He existed in the form of God, (he) did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped. All of this demonstrates His eternality. We could also argue that the various appearances of the angel of YHWH are Christophanies pre-incarnate appearances of Christ.
