From history of Missiology 40 years of Missiology at ATK/UKSW in Warsaw The initiator and founder of Missiology at the Academy of Catholic Theology in Warsaw (ATK) was Fr. Feliks Zapłata SVD ( ). On 23 rd of April 1969, the anniversary of St. Wojciech's death, Fr. Feliks Zapłata began lectures on the theology of missionary transmission. The first students were those who followed courses in Catechetics. In October 1969 nine students began the first program in Poland in "Missiology Specialization". Missiological studies (M.A. program) lasted for 5 years. In years , two first years were dedicated basically to general theology including, however, missiological themes. Three next years were devoted exclusively to missiological lectures. Since 1991, taking into account Strona 7 z 9
8 Polish academic law, as being in the theology program, missiology had to include more general-theological courses. In 1981, Fr. Feliks Zapłata SVD retired. His successor as director of the Missiology Department was Fr. Władysław Kowalak SVD. In academic year 1986/1987, the Missiology Department gave rise to the new Department of Religious Studies. In the academic year 1999/2000, the Missiology Department found itself in the new structures of the Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University. After the retirement of Fr. Władysław Kowalak SVD in the academic year 2003/2004, Mr. Eugeniusz Sakowicz was temporarily responsible for the Missiology Department. In December 2005, Fr. Jarosław Różański became the new Director of Missiology Department. At present, in our Department there are two chairs: the chair of Mission History and the chair of Mission Theology. Chair of Mission History Prof. Dr. Hab. Jarosław Różański OMI (chair) Rev. Dr. Józef Łupiński (lecturer) Dr. Tomasz Szyszka SVD (lecturer) Strona 8 z 9
9 Chair of Mission Theology Dr. hab. Leon Nieścior OMI (chair) Dr. Wojciech Kluj OMI (lecturer) Rev. Dr. Janusz Gajda (lecturer) Besides, there are over 20 different part-time lecturers from Poland and other countries. Created in 1969 on ATK in Warsaw, Missiology carried the longlasting contribution in making Church in Poland more missionary. Among our graduates there are: 1 Professor (with the President s of Poland nomination), 6 persons with a Habilitation (postdoctoral) degree, 34 Doctors and over 250 of persons holding a Master's degree.
