2 A Study of the book of Amos (Seeking God) Intro.: Are you a seeker of God? Would a reality show of your life reveal a person who is a seeker of God? Read: Amos 5:1-27 Define seek: (Webster) to resort to ; to go to; to go in search of or to look for; to try to discover; to ask for; to try to acquire or gain Hebrew word: (dāras) means to inquire, consult, or to search for; to carefully investigate. As used by Amos: This searching implies an intensity and focus that will not be distracted and turned aside by any other purpose. The word seek is used in the O.T. 163 times in various forms; The Blessings of Seeking the Lord: The blessings basic necessities o Psalm 34:10 - The young lions do lack and suffer hunger; But they who seek the LORD shall not be in want of any good thing. The blessings personal assurance o Psalm 9:10 - And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O LORD, have not forsaken those who seek you. The blessings of understanding o Psalm 14:2 - The LORD looks down from heaven on the children of man, to see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. The blessings of praise o Psalm 22:26 - The poor will eat and be satisfied. All who seek the LORD will praise him. Their hearts will rejoice with everlasting joy. (NLT) The Penalties for not seeking the Lord: Sin will keep you from seeking Him o Roman 3:11 There is none who seek for God. Pride will keep you from seeking Him o Psalm 10:4 In his pride the wicked does not seek him; in all his thoughts there is no room for God.
3 The Lord limits when He can be found: Isaiah 55:6 Seek the Lord while he may be found. o In terms of salvation (unbeliever) o In terms or mercy (believers) Seeking the Lord when in sin will initiate His forgiveness o Amos 5:6 - "Seek the LORD that you may live The process for seeking the Lord: Matt 6:25-34 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. (Holman) o Do not be anxious o Look at nature Seek His Kingdom: o Means to desire for God s righteous rule on earth and on our lives personally. o It involves the diligent pursuit of righteous living. o It carries with it the idea of expanding God s kingdom via evangelism Expect Him to meet your needs o The necessities for life will be provided Develop a single minded devotion to God o Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord Do not lean on your own understanding Acknowledge Him Examples of seeking the Lord: Matt 13:44-46 The Pearl of Great Price o It carries with it the idea of a single minded pursuit of this kingdom of incomparable value.
