Using the Teacher Handbook This handbook is designed to help Sunday school teachers prepare for and teach the lessons in Christian Light s Adult and Youth quarterlies. It will not teach your class for you. Nor will it replace your taking the time to study the lesson text and seeking God s help in preparing to teach. You will find here more material for a lesson than you will use in a Sunday school period. We do not intend that it all be used in class, but rather that it help you prepare to teach and to meet particular needs in your class. Following is a list of the sections in each lesson s helps, along with a brief description. Lesson Text and Pupil Material The first three pages of each lesson appear just as they do in the pupil quarterly. Study Questions Adult and Youth The study questions from the adult and youth quarterlies, along with suggested answers, begin on the fourth page of each lesson. These questions are intended primarily to help students study the lesson. You may sometimes want to use them in class. Teacher Helps Introduction: Introduces the lesson, notes several key focuses, and concludes with ideas for prayer for yourself and your class as you prepare to teach. Section 1, 2, etc.: The Word Study section explains the meaning and use of some words in the text. An exposition of the passage that goes beyond what is found in the pupil quarterly follows the word study. Studying and Teaching the Lesson Studying the Lesson: Provides background information about the lesson text and context. It suggests ways to study the lesson and includes questions to ask yourself or things to look for as you study. It concludes with a list of suggested emphases for teaching the lesson. Teaching the Lesson: Gives suggestions for the teacher s personal preparation and includes suggestions for presenting the lesson and eliciting discussion, questions to ask in discussing each section, and ideas for concluding the lesson. Teachers differ; so do not feel bound to these ideas for teaching. However, you may want to incorporate some of them into your own lesson outline. Illustrating and Applying the Lesson Presents stories, object lessons, or illustrations you can use to introduce or demonstrate a main lesson truth. Practical Applications: Each of these is referenced to the lesson text. Use the ones that fit your class and look for others that will be helpful to them. Help students think of these applications without your having to point them out. Asking questions to lead them to these conclusions is one way to do it. 2

Youth, Young, and Older Adult: Includes possible emphases and applications for specific age groups. Often, an emphasis for one age level can be applied to other ages as well. Help for the Superintendent This section includes a possible devotional reading for the superintendent and suggestions for focusing people s minds on a key lesson emphasis. The devotional leader is not to teach the lesson, so this section avoids Scriptures from the lesson background and Scriptures that overlap with the lesson. The younger classes lessons are listed here for the superintendent s information Adult / Youth Handbook Introduction to This Quarter s Lessons The Revelation of Jesus Christ Introduction Without question, the theme of this quarter s lessons is Jesus Christ. The book we are studying is the Revelation of Jesus Christ. Jesus is God, the Master and Controller of the universe. Though all men do not now recognize Him, all will eventually acknowledge Him as King of kings and Lord of lords. As Henry Longfellow wrote, The wrong shall fail, / The right prevail, / With peace on earth, good will to men. This can only come in eternity with Jesus Christ. Unit 1 Hold Fast Till I Come (Lessons 1-8) The Book of Revelation contains various emphases. Holding fast is one of them. The first three chapters of the book especially emphasize holding fast to Jesus Christ and to the truth. Lesson 1: Our Glorified Lord. The Revelation was a message to the suffering, persecuted church in John s day. The church needed a renewed vision of its glorified Lord and hope for triumph in the future. We will find this hope as we focus on Jesus Christ and give Him glory and dominion in our lives. Lesson 2: Symptoms of Spiritual Decline. The tempter has always tried to tear down the church through spiritual apathy. Christ knows the heart and the motivation of the church and each of its members. We need unhindered fellowship with Him as Lord and Saviour. Lesson 3: The Leaven of Unsound Teaching. Satan uses false teaching to hinder the church s purpose on earth. As the church increases in love, service, faith, and patient endurance, it can refute this false teaching. Constant fellowship with Christ and faithful obedience to Him are essential to stand for the truth. Lesson 4: Wonderful in His Birth. It would be possible to have an inspiring Christmas lesson by simply studying Revelation 12. Note how the three passages in the printed text connect to each other. The Revelation passage shows that Christ was victorious over Satan s attempts to hinder His purpose for coming into the world. 3

Lesson 5: Dangers of Complacency. Complacency and lukewarmness are weapons Satan uses against the church when other attacks fail. Profession without wholehearted surrender and commitment is an abomination to God. Lesson 6: Gaining an Incorruptible Crown. In the midst of tribulation and discouragement, God s will is that true riches may abound. The faithful church keeps the Word through patient endurance even in times of tribulation. It will endure to the end and receive the crown of life. Lesson 7: Behold the Lamb of God. The scene here switches to Heaven and what is going on in the spiritual realm. Christ is in control of what happens in the world and in the universe. The Lamb of God is found worthy to set in motion God s plan for both judgment and redemption. Lesson 8: The Redeemed and the Unrighteous. God receives the redeemed who are pure in life and speech because they are wholly committed to Him. The idolatrous world system will fall, but the faithful will be blessed forever. Unit 2 Behold I Come Quickly (Lessons 9-13) Lesson 9: The Bridegroom Is Coming. Our God is worthy of praise for His judgment of the idolatrous world system. The saints who work righteousness will share in the marriage of the Lamb. The suffering Lamb will become the triumphant Lord and King. The spirit of prophecy is to bear testimony of Jesus and His work. Lesson 10: The Day of Judgment. Satan is powerless to resist God, who will put an end to all his evil works and cast him into eternal torment. On the other hand, blessed are the holy, who endure for the testimony of Jesus Christ. Their names are in the book of life. Lesson 11: A New Heaven and a New Earth. The created world, as we know it, will pass away. God mercifully provides the day of opportunity so that more people will escape the final judgment and will live in the new heaven and the new earth. We must diligently pursue holiness and godliness if we would be found blameless in that day. Lesson 12: The City Built of God. This vision of the holy city should challenge us to faithful watching and waiting as well as to faithful witnessing so that others may share its delight. We must live each day in the hope of dwelling with our Lord and Saviour forever and ever. May we live in light of eternity. Lesson 13: Ready, Watching, and Waiting. Again we return to a theme found in Revelation 1 keeping the words of this prophecy. Compare Revelation 1:3 with 22:7. Note the concluding beatitudes of Revelation (22:7, 14). 4

1-19 Adult / Youth Handbook Alternate Memory Passage December 2018 February 2019 The following Scripture is for classes that would like to memorize a passage instead of individual verses this quarter. (The superintendent could be in charge of the memory work, if all the youth and adult classes wish to memorize it together.) We suggest that students memorize and repeat together one verse each Sunday, adding to the verses memorized the previous Sundays. Revelation 5: And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. 2. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? 3. And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. 4. And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon. 5. And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. 6. And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. 7. And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne. 8. And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints. 9. And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; 10. And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. 11. And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; 12. Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. 13. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. 5

Memory Selection: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. Revelation 1:18 Scriptural Background: Revelation 1 Printed Text: Revelation 1:4-18 December 2, 2018 UNIT 1: Hold Fast Till I Come Lesson 1, December 2, 2018 Our Glorified Lord Hymns: Look, Ye Saints Alleluia, Sing to Jesus At the Name of Jesus We are beginning our study of a wonderful book of prophecy unlike any other book in the Bible. The Greek word translated Revelation is apokalupsis, which means a revealing or unveiling. It is the revelation of Jesus Christ. He is the One doing the revealing as well as the One whom the book reveals. Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy. Focus: Lord, teach us to worship Jesus Christ, glorious and victorious, who stands in the midst of His church and assures its triumph out of suffering. Behold, He Cometh Revelation 1:4. John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne; 5. And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, 6. And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. 7. Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. 8. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. I Am Alpha and Omega 9. I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ. 10. I was in the Spirit on the Lord s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, 11. Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the 6

1-19 Adult / Youth Handbook last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea. I Am Alive for Evermore 12. And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks; 13. And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle. 14. His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire; 15. And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters. 16. And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength. 17. And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: 18. I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. Lesson Commentary Behold He Cometh The Book of Revelation is a revealing or unveiling of Jesus Christ Himself (verse 1). What does the Book of Revelation reveal? First of all, Christ is the One doing the revealing. He is also the person being revealed as King of kings and Lord of lords. He is the center and focus of this book. Verse 3 pronounces a special blessing on the one who reads and those who hear this prophecy. This blessing is one of seven beatitudes in Revelation (1:3; 14:13; 16:15; 19:9; 20:6; 22:7, 14). Verses 4-8 present three descriptions of Jesus Christ, as past, present, and future. In the past, He was the faithful witness and the firstborn from the dead. In the present, He is the One who washes us from our sins. In the future, He will come with the clouds to receive His people to Himself. The Holy Spirit is spoken of as sevenfold. The Book of Revelation speaks three other times of the seven Spirits of God (3:1; 4:5; 5:6). Isaiah 11:2 describes the multiple work of the Spirit as the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord. Because of what Jesus Christ has done for us, we owe Him praise in our words and actions. We need to give Him glory and dominion, as children of the eternal King. Then we will be ready to meet Him when He comes with the clouds. It will not be a secret coming. The whole world will know. Are we preparing now for that coming? 7 Our Glorified Lord

I Am Alpha and Omega On the Isle of Patmos, John was experiencing a taste of the tribulation and suffering that comes upon the church for Christ s sake. That tribulation is not to be compared with the tribulation that will fall upon the ungodly inhabitants of the earth described later in Revelation. The Lord s day refers to the day of Christ s resurrection (our Sunday). Christ appeared to His disciples two more times on that day. The first day was important from the beginning of the church. The Holy Spirit descended on that day at Pentecost. The disciples gathered to break bread on that day. Paul asked the Corinthians to take up a collection on the first day of the week (1 Corinthians 16:2). Alpha and Omega were the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, as A and Z are of our alphabet. All the letters of all the alphabets of all the languages in the world are not adequate to describe all that Christ is. John resorted to using many and varied symbols and allusions (indirect references, hints) to describe the indescribable. Many of these come from the Old Testament. Isaiah described Jehovah as the first and the last (Isaiah 44:6), clearly identifying Jesus Christ as Jehovah God. I Am Alive for Evermore Note the symbolic significance of the number 7 in Revelation to suggest completion or all of something. Letters were written to seven churches. Seven candlesticks (lamp stands) represent the seven churches (verses 12, 20). One of the duties of Old Testament priests was to tend the golden lamp stand in the tabernacle. Here Jesus Christ, our High Priest, tends the seven churches, representative of all churches. The symbols in verses depict Christ s right as Judge of the entire universe. Many of these symbols are suggested in the Old Testament. It has been said that there are more than five hundred allusions to the Old Testament in the Book of Revelation. These verses are the only physical description of Jesus as He is in Heaven, as Intercessor and Judge. Christ s white hair suggests His wisdom and maturity in judging. His flaming eyes suggest searching, penetrating judgment. Brass is a type of judgment. The sharp two-edged sword suggests the Word of God, which is described that way in Hebrews 4:12. His Word goes out from His mouth to convict the world of sin and of judgment. In verse 18, Christ identified with us in the most tragic of all human experiences death. But He is alive forever. The victory that Jesus won over sin and death can be ours as well. Verses 19 and 20 (not in the printed text) explain what John was to do with what he had seen write about it! In Revelation, symbolic things are often explained. The seven candlesticks to whom the message was sent were the seven churches, but who were the angels of the seven churches? The passage does not say. Some believe they refer to specific angels representing each of the churches. Perhaps angel refers to leaders of the churches. Or it may refer to messengers to the churches. The word angel can mean messenger. In Matthew 11:10 Jesus called John the Baptist His messenger (aggelos, angel). December 2,

1-19 Adult / Youth Handbook Study Questions Adult and Youth 1. (Adult) In what sense are believers kings and priests? (verse 6) How is Christ our King and our High Priest? Both this verse and 1 Peter 2:9, which speaks of being a chosen generation and a royal priesthood, allude to Exodus 19:6: Ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. Believers constitute a kingdom of priests who will reign with Christ. If we suffer with Him, we will also reign with Him (2 Timothy 2:12). Believers will be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years (Revelation 20:6). Believers are priests because they come directly to Christ for grace to help, without the intervention of an earthly priest. Christ is our King because He is the supreme head of the kingdom of Heaven. Thus, He is the King and Leader of our lives. He is our High Priest in that we take our requests to God through Him. We pray to God in Christ s name. 1. (Youth) How did Jesus show His love for us (verse 5) according to Romans 5:8; 1 John 3:16; 4:9, 10? Verse 5 says, He loved us and washed us from our sins in his own blood. Even while we as sinners rebelled against Him, He loved us so much that He died for us (Romans 5:8), laying down His very life for us (1 John 3:16). God loved us so much He sent Christ so that we might live through Him. In mercy He sent Jesus to be the propitiation for our sins (1 John 4:9, 10). 2. (Adult) What is the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of the church and of believers? among the ungodly? (John 15:26; 16:7, 8; Romans 8:11, 26) Note the two mentions of the Spirit in the first chapter of Revelation (vv. 4, 10). The Spirit is described as being before God s throne as well as with His servants (such as John). Many other Scriptures speak in detail about the Holy Spirit s work in the world. John 15:26 describes the Holy Spirit as the believer s Comforter and the One who speaks truth. The Holy Spirit reproves the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:7, 8). The Spirit quickens us (makes us alive) and also helps our weaknesses (Romans 8:11, 26). 2. (Youth) What are the implications of Christ being the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end? (verse 8) Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. For those not acquainted with Greek, the first and the last or the beginning and the ending express the same idea. The reference to the alphabet reminds us of John 21:25: There are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. This concept also appears in the Old Testament. Isaiah 41:4; 44:6; and 48:12 express the same idea. Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last. This concept appears in Revelation 11:17; 16:5; and 22:13. Included in some of these passages is the idea that He was, is, and will be, pointing to His eternity and unchangeableness. His being the beginning and the end also relates to the fact that Christ had no beginning and will have no end. He is the Creator from the beginning, and the final judge at the end of history. 3. (Adult) How did John faithfully serve God in spite of his difficult experience of exile to Patmos? What are some ways we can be faithful to God, even in difficult situations? 9 Our Glorified Lord

John s exile to Patmos must have been very discouraging. Patmos was a small, rocky, mostly barren island southwest of Asia Minor (modern Turkey). The Romans banished criminals to this island and forced them to work hard in the mines and quarries. Tradition says John was banished to Patmos for eighteen months. He used the opportunity he had to write about the vision Christ gave to him. Even when we face difficulties in life, Christ calls us to be faithful in witnessing for Him and taking time to do the things He calls us to do. 3. (Youth) What are some ways persecution can refine and purify the believer? (Matthew 5:11, 12; 1 Peter 5:10; 2 Timothy 3:12; Revelation 1:9) Rather than discourage us, persecution should drive us to God for help and guidance. As we focus on Him, we draw closer to Him, and He purifies our lives. We are blessed and should rejoice even when we face persecution (Matthew 5:11, 12). Persecution can help to strengthen, settle, and perfect us (1 Peter 5:10). We know that whoever lives a godly life will suffer persecution (2 Timothy 3:12). John suffered persecution, but was faithful in doing what God called him to do (Revelation 1:9). 4. (Adult) How did John s vision of Christ s greatness help him convey Christ s message? How did Ezekiel s vision of God s greatness help him in heeding God s call? (Ezekiel 1:26-28; 2:1-6) John found courage, even in persecution, because the Christ he had known physically earlier in life was with him and now was speaking to him in his time of trouble. Christ s presence surely helped him do what he could for the church in spite of adverse circumstances. Ezekiel s vision of God s greatness inspired him to obey and helped him not be afraid to speak God s December 2, message to a rebellious people. Likewise, we need a vision of God s greatness. As we read His Word and He reveals Himself to us, may that vision inspire us to faithful service. 4. (Youth; Adult #5) How did Christ allay any fears John may have had? (verses 17, 18) How does Christ put our fears to rest? (Matthew 10:31, 32; John 14:27) We do not know what fears John may have faced in his exile. He may have faced hunger, overwork, and doubts when or if he would be delivered from exile. In verses 17 and 18, Christ laid His hand on John and verbally assured him not to be afraid. Even if John faced death, he could remember that his Lord won the victory over death in His resurrection and was victorious over death eternally. Discuss fears we may face today. We face fears from without and from within. We sometimes fear the uncertainties of the future and what will happen to us. Financial fears are common in our day of uncertainty. We may fear persecution or what others may say about us. We are of more value than many sparrows (Matthew 10:31, 32). Christ gives peace far greater than anything the world around us can offer (John 14:27). He teaches us to trust and not be afraid. Only what we do for Christ is of real and lasting value. With Christ s peace, we do not fear what might happen to us. In thinking of fear, an encouraging study is to look at the fear nots of the Bible. One of them is in verse 17 of today s text. Fear not appears in sixtythree verses. When angels or God spoke to people, they often said fear not (Genesis 46:3; Matthew 28:5; Luke 1:30). Jesus tells us: The very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows (Luke 12:7).

1-19 Adult / Youth Handbook Introduction The Greek word translated Revelation is apokalupsis. The word means a revealing or an unveiling. In some translations and in some other languages, the name of the book we are studying is Apocalypse. This word is the opposite of the Greek word apocrypha, which means something hidden. That word describes a group of books written mostly during the time between the Old and New Testaments. Revelation is a revealing of Jesus Christ. However, it has been estimated that almost seventy percent of Revelation s verses allude to the Old Testament in some way. The Old Testament points forward to Jesus Christ, who is fully revealed in the New Testament. Section 1: Behold He Cometh (Revelation 1:4-8) Word Study faithful (v. 5) trustworthy, true witness (v. 5) one who gives his life (Greek, martus) kindreds (v. 7) tribes, races (people) wail (v. 7) beat the breast Note that God gave this Revelation of Jesus Christ to Christ, who then revealed it to John on the Isle of Patmos (verses 1, 9). God planned for this book to be read in the churches. It pronounces a special blessing on him who reads it and those who hear the reading. In those days many could not read. They had to rely on someone else to read the Scriptures to them. Also note that this Revelation is not only something we are to read and believe but something we must hold fast to ( keep those things which are written therein ). In addition to the prophecies Teacher Helps of this book, there are plenty of teachings we can apply to our lives. The Book of Revelation was addressed specifically to seven churches (v. 4). In the next few lessons, we will discover many details about the seven churches named in the first three chapters. Bible readers have long debated whether these letters are written only to these congregations or whether they are intended to represent all churches of all times. Note the prominence of the number 7, especially in Revelation, to suggest completeness. Though the letters were written to seven named churches in ancient Asia Minor, they certainly apply to all churches of all times. Some suggest that the seven churches in Chapters 2 and 3 represent seven periods of church history with the church at Ephesus representing the early church and the church at Laodicea representing the end-time churches. However, in any age we can find churches with characteristics of all seven churches. We must apply the truths from them to ourselves. In verse 5, some modern versions say loosened us from our sins instead of washed us from our sins. The Greek words for washed and loosened are only one letter different. Both are certainly true. Washed is used elsewhere to refer to the cleansing of the believer. Paul wrote of the washing of regeneration (Titus 3:5) and the washing of water by the Word (Ephesians 5:26). Discuss in what sense Christians are a kingdom of priests. Old Testament priests offered sacrifices to God for their own sins and for the sins of the people. What are some things Christians are to offer up to God? We offer our bodies (Romans 12:1, 2), our possessions (Luke 21:4), 11 Our Glorified Lord

our praise (Hebrews 13:15), and our service (Philippians 2:17). Verse 7 speaks of Christ coming (His Second Coming) with clouds. He also ascended into a cloud (Acts 1:9). Daniel 7:13 speaks of the Son of Man coming with clouds. All will see Him, according to Zechariah 12:10. Hebrews 12:1 uses cloud in a figurative sense when it speaks of the great cloud of witnesses (believers) who have gone before us. When Christ returns, He will bring with Him the saints of the past the great cloud of witnesses. In verse 8 the speaker changes. John was speaking for Christ in verses 4-7. Here Jesus Christ speaks. Words formed with all the letters of the alphabet can never describe His greatness. The word almighty (v. 8) is used nine times in the New Testament, and eight of those are in the Book of Revelation. This book emphasizes His sovereignty, power, and control of the universe as well as His people. Being almighty also describes Christ s relationship to each believer. I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty (2 Corinthians 6:17, 18). Section 2: I Am Alpha and Omega (Revelation 1:9-11) Word Study tribulation (v. 9) affliction, anguish patience (v. 9) patient endurance testimony (v. 9) Greek marturia, related to the idea of a martyr, one who gives testimony for Christ with his life In verse 9, John linked tribulation, perseverance (patience), and the kingdom of Heaven. Those to whom he was writing were his companions in these things. Great trials had already fallen upon the churches of John s day, and they have continued to be the lot of December 2, the church throughout history. Some of man s deepest relationships occur among people who suffer together for Christ. This applies to physical suffering and to emotional and spiritual suffering. The great voice John heard that reminded him of a trumpet was the voice of the Lord Jesus speaking to him. The use of symbols, such as a trumpet, is one way John tried to express things that are, in many ways, inexpressible. The seven churches named in verse 11 were arranged in a roughly circular pattern in western Asia Minor. Many other churches existed at that time and certainly could have profited from the Book of Revelation. Paul also wrote letters to seven churches: Rome, Corinth, Galatia, Ephesus, Colossae, Philippi, and Thessalonica. All these letters are meant for all churches. Section 3: I Am Alive Forevermore (Revelation 1:12-18) Word Study candlesticks (v. 12) lamp stands paps (v. 13) chest, breast girdle (v. 13) belt strength (v. 16) Greek, dunamis, power (giving us the words dynamic and dynamite) hell (v. 18) Hades, realm of the dead The voice speaking to John was none other than Jesus Christ Himself. We cannot separate a person from his voice. When he turned to see the voice, he also turned to see the Person. John was becoming acquainted in a new way with the One whose voice he had known so well during Jesus earthly ministry. The lamp stands (v. 13) provide an apt picture of a church or congregation. A lamp stand does not produce

1-19 Adult / Youth Handbook light; rather, it displays the light. A congregation displays Jesus Christ to the world. Point out the various descriptions of Jesus Christ in glory and discuss what they signify. His long garment suggests one who had authority, such as a judge who wears a long robe. The golden girdle (v. 13) reminds us of the garments of service of the high priests in the Old Testament (Exodus 29:5). Golden threads were woven into the garments around their chests. Christ s entire breast band was gold. His white hair pictures His wisdom as an older person or one in charge. He is the ancient of days (Daniel 7:9). Eyes as a flame of fire suggest His penetrating gaze and His judgment. His feet of fine brass point to judgment. In the ancient world, brass was prized and was connected with judgment and sacrifices. The voice as the sound of many waters suggests the powerfulness of His Word. The two-edged sword coming from His mouth suggests the Word of God, which is like a sword. We need to fall, like Isaiah, before His awesome greatness and cry out, Woe is me. Peter, in the New Testament, said to the Lord, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord (Luke 5:8). John fell before the Lord as if he were dead, and Jesus reassured him, telling him not to fear but to trust Him who lives forever. Blessed position! Does death alarm you? We are never so much alive as when we are dead at His feet (Spurgeon). Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him (Romans 6:9). Studying and Teaching the Lesson Studying the Lesson Too often, we have not valued this book of prophecy as the wonderful gift from God that it truly is. Some use it to argue the unfolding drama of the end-times; others react to that and practically ignore the book. Both miss the revealing of our Lord. North American Christians live in an unusual time and place, where mostly peaceful attitudes toward the church prevail. Because of this, we fail to appreciate how precious some Scriptures are to suffering Christians. The Book of Revelation is one of these. As we look into this book, let s attempt to read it from the perspective of a suffering church. Let s glory in the message of bright hope, victory, and of encouragement to persevere and endure. Begin your study by asking God to give you a greater love and appreciation for the Lord Jesus. He is the center and theme of this lesson, of the Book of Revelation, and of life itself for us as His servants. You cannot teach this lesson acceptably until you have caught anew the vision of the One who washed you in His own blood, who defeated death, who reigns supreme, who must reign supreme in you, and who will triumph someday over all evil. If you are dreading these lessons on Revelation because you know from experience that prophecy lessons tend to generate heated discussions and disagreements, spend some time in prayer on the matter, begging God to make clear to you how to lead your class into focusing on the exalted Lord Jesus. Beg Him for wisdom; He will give it. Pray too for your class members, that they will catch the vision of profiting from the lessons spiritually 13 Our Glorified Lord

instead of arguing for one view or other of end-time events. If you are looking forward to these lessons as opportunities to propagate your understanding of end-time events, be careful. You will do well to minimize specific views and focus on the revelation of Jesus Christ and truths the whole class can agree on. There is tremendous blessing to be gained in these studies (v. 3) as you and your class in humility and meekness seek together for comfort and help from the Scriptures. These suggested lesson emphases may help guide your study: The Revelation is a message of hope to the suffering church. Jesus Christ is the faithful witness. Jesus Christ is alive forevermore. Jesus Christ has been given all authority. Jesus Christ was revealed to the churches as gloriously holy, awesome, and victorious. Read the chapter several times, each time noting different aspects of the passage. Try to come up with an outline or at least a list of the divisions in the chapter. Which verses are strictly introductory? Which verses constitute the salutation of the book? Where does Jesus Himself begin to speak? Read the chapter in another version, noting differences in translation that may help to shed light on the passage s meaning. Look for relationships within verses or in close by verses. For example, note the progression in titles given to the Lord Jesus in verse 5. Is this a vision, or did John actually see Christ? Does it matter? We know God showed John these things; exactly what mechanical means of seeing occurred makes no difference. A related question about much of the book is this: Is it to be taken December 2, literally or symbolically? Actually, we must take the book literally. John says often in the book, I saw.... Why should we suggest that he did not see what he says he saw? Or do we suppose he wrote in some kind of code language where one thing represented another? When he says he saw one like unto the Son of Man among the lamp stands, why should we doubt that he saw just that? When he says he saw a great dragon, why should we doubt it? Of course, we understand that much of what God showed him had symbolic meanings, and sometimes God revealed to John (and he to us) what those meanings were. Sometimes He did not. Teaching the Lesson Personal Preparation Ask the One who is unlimited by time to help you make the short class time profitable by honoring Himself through you and your class members as you together seek Him. Introduction Begin by calling attention to the blessings promised to those who read, hear, and keep (hold fast) the sayings of this book (1:3; 22:7). Express your faith in these promises and challenge your class to believe them. Expect blessings through these studies of God s letters to persecuted Christians. Sections 1 and 2 This lesson sets the stage for the rest of the book by revealing to us the risen and almighty Lord. John s salutation, as recorded in Section 1, tells who the letter is from and to whom it is sent. Who is the writer? the Author? the recipients? John s description of himself is in verse 2, prior to the lesson text, and in verse 9. Note the description of the other senders of this letter: the seven

1-19 Adult / Youth Handbook Spirits (v. 4) and Jesus Christ (vv. 5-8). What is the place of the Spirit in the giving of this revelation (vv. 4, 10)? Note the separation evident already in verses 5-8. Verses 5 and 6 deal with those in God s kingdom, while verse 7 focuses more on those in the kingdom of the world. In relation to His coming with clouds, consider the clouds at Sinai, the cloudy pillar that accompanied Israel in the wilderness, the Shekinah glory that filled the tabernacle and temple, and on the Mount of Transfiguration. Daniel 7:13 (in today s suggested superintendent s reading) mentions the Son of man coming in clouds to the Ancient of days. See Matthew 26:63-66 to note the Jews response to Jesus saying He would come with clouds. Discuss the names Christ gives Himself in verse 8 in relation to His timelessness and power. In Section 2, John describes how the Lord came to him with this revelation of Himself. Note John s description of himself as a companion (partaker, partner, co-sharer) with his readers in three significant areas (v. 9). Patience here could well be translated patient endurance or steadfastness. Are we partakers of these three? Remind your class that tribulation is a normal part of living for Christ. If we live truly godly lives, we can know tribulation will come. We can also rejoice in it, knowing our God uses it to perfect us and prepare us for His heavenly kingdom. Consider related or similar names the Lord is given besides Alpha, Omega, first, and last (v. 11). He is both Author (Initiator) and Finisher (Completer) of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). He is not only the Way (John 14:6) but also the Goal (Philippians 3:10). He is the Gate of the sheepfold, but also the Shepherd (John 10). Why did God choose these seven congregations to send messages to? We cannot presume to know all the reasons, but we can assume He had very good reasons, not the least of which was that He intended these messages to be challenges and comforts to His church in every age. The messages to the seven churches can appear to apply to various ages in church history, but to do so is somewhat speculation; the Scripture does not indicate that they should be interpreted thus. Section 3 Read through the end of the chapter when you read this portion of the text together. Here, John describes how he saw the risen and exalted Lord. What do the seven candlesticks (lamp stands) represent? the seven stars? (See verse 20. Angels is often translated messengers, and may refer to the leaders of the churches.) What is significant about where the Lord appeared in relation to the lamp stands? where the stars were? Although the Lord is given a number of names indicating He is God almighty, it is a blessing that here He appears as a man: the Son of man (v. 13). Discuss other aspects of Christ s glory and power as revealed in these verses. Conclusion Let us, like John, prostrate ourselves before this glorious Lord, who alone is worthy of our praise and of the continual, living sacrifice of our lives and bodies. He died for us. He bought us with His own blood. He is our Lord and Master. He is alive forevermore, and because He lives, we also shall live. 15 Our Glorified Lord

Illustrating and Applying the Lesson Discuss the ways God, through Christ, revealed Himself to John in exile on Patmos. John received a vision of God s message to the churches and His plan for the future. He fell before Christ in humility and contrition, ready to do what he was asked to do. Contrast this with ways God reveals Himself to us today. All Scriptures have been written, so God reveals Himself to us through the Scriptures, the faithful preaching of the Word, and the Holy Spirit. We come to God in humility as did John, and He shows us His will. Discuss ways God has revealed His will to members of the class in various areas of life. What was the role of prayer? of reading the Scriptures? of seeking or receiving counsel from God s people? Practical Applications 1. We must read and heed the Word to receive guidance and blessing from God (v. 3). 2. Because Christ has loved us and given Himself for us, we love Him by obeying and joyfully submitting to His will (v. 5). 3. As we serve Christ in the congregation and in the world, our words and our lives glorify Him (v. 6). 4. Anticipating Christ s return helps us to be ready to meet Him and to be working to bring others to Him (v. 7). 5. As we patiently persevere even in the most difficult of times, God will show us His will and others will learn from our example (v. 9). 6. To be sensitive to Christ, we must be what we should be spiritually and be where we should be, so that He can use us and bless us (v. 10). 7. We must do what Christ and the authorities under Him ask us to do December 2, so that we can better help others to follow Christ (vv. 10, 11). 8. We must let Christ search our lives through His Word so that we can live as we ought to live (vv ). 9. Being surrendered to Christ and knowing the truth of His resurrection helps us to overcome the fear of suffering because of our faith (v. 18). Youth The upside-down way. Satan had offered the Man Jesus the position of prince of the kings of the earth (v. 5) through easy means (Luke 4:5, 6). Jesus rejected that offer, and instead took God s way the difficult way. He humbled Himself and submitted to becoming a supposed victim of Satan and death and emerged the Victor with all authority. Our way to glory can be no different. It must be the way of humility, service, and submission. That is not the way taught in most churches today. Most churches are teaching a version of the world s way. Today, we are told, believers can count on Heaven as long as they have been justified by faith. How they live does not matter. We know that s not true. But do we live the American dream, receiving our good things now, assuming we can somehow omit the cross? Young Adult The Faithful Witness. Jesus was the faithful witness. He faithfully and clearly revealed to man the Father s will. He faithfully carried it out in His life: I do always those things that please him. He witnessed to the Father s love for us with His own death. His Word is absolutely faithful. The one who trusts God and His Word

fully will find Him fully faithful. We can stake our lives on His Word. We must stake our lives on His Word. How faithful am I? Do I love Him with all my heart? Do I serve Him with all my might? Do I cultivate His meek and submissive spirit in my life and in my attitude and responses? Do I trust Him? Do I make real-life decisions that force me to walk by faith and not by sight? Do I testify of Him at every opportunity? Is He not worthy of that kind of faith and faithfulness? Older Adult Alive forevermore. As we get older, the fact that we are not physically alive forevermore becomes more real to us. What a blessing and comfort that Jesus has conquered death and is alive forever. Not only that, He is our Lord and Master. He holds the keys of death and Hell. Having washed us from our sins in His blood, He is certainly able to keep us to the end. We may not get to see Him coming in the clouds, but if not, we have the assurance that He will bring us with Him, and so shall we ever be with the Lord Adult / Youth Handbook Help for the Superintendent Suggested Devotional Reading: Daniel 7:9-14 This passage is the latter half of a dream God gave to Daniel, in which he saw the rise and fall of several beasts that represented the rise and fall of several earthly kingdoms. Verses 9 and 10 describe the almighty God the Ancient of days whose description in a number of ways resembles the glorified Christ in today s lesson. The view is an awesome, fearful one, with gleaming white and glistening fieriness. Innumerable multitudes wait on the Almighty, and other multitudes stand before Him to be judged. The one who had before spoken great words now speaks them no more (v. 11). He has learned that, truly, it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God (Hebrews 10:31). Christ appears in verses 13 and 14 as a man, with clouds, and is given an everlasting kingdom. As in much of Old Testament (and for that matter, New Testament) prophecy, there are things here we do not understand completely. But we understand enough to recognize the Lord Jesus in His exalted and glorious position as Son of man and Prince of God s never-ending kingdom. 18 Memory Selection: How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him. Hebrews 2:3 Scriptural Background: Revelation 2:1-7, 12-18; Hebrews 2:1-4; 5:12 6:8 Printed Text: Revelation 2:1-7, December 9, 2018 Lesson 2, December 9, 2018 Symptoms of Spiritual Decline Hymns: O Jesus, I Have Promised O, for a Closer Walk With God Almighty God, Whose Only Son Today, we begin our study of the letters to the seven churches. Each of these letters opens with a greeting. Each presents the Lord Jesus appealing to the church in light of its needs. The Lord gives words of commendation to all but one of the churches and words of reproof to all except Smyrna and Philadelphia. He exhorts each to hear what the Spirit is saying and promises blessing to the overcomer. Focus: Lord, teach us to guard in our hearts true love for Jesus and to walk in His truth. The Loveless Church Revelation 2:1. Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; 2. I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: 3. And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name s sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted. 4. Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. 5. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent. 6. But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. 7. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. 18
