Teach us to understand and keep the greatest commandment of all: To love one another as you have loved us Amen Dear Parents, Students and Staff, School Photos School Improvement Discussion Sunday 28th May Sacrament of Confirmation (Year 6) Tuesday 30th May Whole School Assembly (Hosted by Middle School) Thursday 1st June First Eucharist Workshop (Year 3) Friday 2nd June Senior School Interschool Sports Tuesday 6th June School Advisory Board Friday 9th June Senior School Interschool Sports Monday 12th June Queen s Birthday -Public Holiday Wednesday 14th June Parents and Friends Meeting 9.00am Assembly Area 3.00pm 3.00pm 7.00pm 7.30pm 2.00pm Last week was another busy week. I was privileged to spend some time at the inaugural Middle School Camp. The children had an amazing day out at the Zoo, with beautiful weather. This was followed by a great experience at Urban Camp Parkville. I would like to commend the children on their exceptional behaviour and for making St Gabriel s proud. My sincere thanks is extended to Mrs Larraine Miller, Mrs Hayley Ellul, Mr Adrian Dixon, Mrs Ann McGuire and Mrs Trudi Aiashi for their willingness to attend the camp and provide an amazing opportunity for our students. Your generous donation of time is greatly appreciated. Whilst the staff were busy planning out our next four years at St Gabriel s, some of our students represented our school at the district Cross Country competition. I would like to congratulate all children who participated in the event. I would like to especially congratulate Robin Arob who came 10th and Xavier Siriani who came 2nd in the event. Xavier and Robin will now proceed to the next level. When walking around our corridors you may notice some words that have been placed around our school. These are our learning dispositions that we are focussing on this year. We are continually discussing these dispositions with our students, so that they can further develop their awareness of the qualities of a good learner. My thanks is extended to Rolla Abi-Haila for creating all of the lettering. If you would like more information about our Learning Dispositions, please see either Mrs Klaic or myself. As we are now in the winter months, we request that if your child is absent from school, a letter is sent to your child s classroom teacher upon their return. If children require extended time off school (more than 3 days) please contact the school office. Have a great week. M M

RE News Sunday, 28th May at 3pm - Sacrament of Confirmation at St Gabriel s. We welcome our school families to join our candidates as they receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation. Thursday, 1st June- First Holy Communion workshop at 7pm. A letter to parents will follow with details. Many people think that Confirmation is about receiving the Holy Spirit for the first time. However, Baptism is when we receive the Holy Spirit. For a long time in the early church, the number of Christians remained fairly small, small enough for the Bishop to be involved in the initiation of every person who was coming into the Christian community. Christians of a particular city would come together with their Bishop at the Easter Vigil. In a separate building, a priest or deacon would baptise the new Christians. After they were baptised with water they would put on white robes and go straight to the Bishop. The Bishop would then seal, that is confirm and endorse their baptism. This would be done, either by laying hands on the newly baptised and/or anointing with the holy oil of chrism. With a prayer that the Holy Spirit would continue to be present to them, the Bishop would send the new Christians to join the faithful gathered around the altar, the table of the Lord. This would be the first time they would stay with the others for the whole of the Eucharist and receive Communion. The Bishop sealed Baptism and opened the door at once to Holy Communion. Whenever Confirmation is celebrated, the ritual endorses, highlights and rejoices in the gift of the Holy Spirit to all the baptised followers of Jesus. The gift of the Holy Spirit makes us Christians. It was first given in Baptism; it is renewed in Confirmation; and it is strengthened each time we share in the Eucharist. On Sunday the 28th May at 3.00pm Bishop Terry Curtin will confirm the 2017 Confirmation Candidates. We pray for them that they may use the Gifts of the Spirit throughout their lives. It is timely for all of us to reflect on the Gifts of the Spirit and how and when we use them. The Seven Gifts of the Spirit are: Wisdom: To accept from God and learn to grow through all that happens to me. Understanding: To listen, to think things through, to be able to put myself in others shoes. Counsel: To be able to choose what is good and true. Courage: To accept difficulties and challenges in my life. Knowledge: To willingly learn about and develop my relationships with God and other people. Piety: To have respect and care for myself, all people and all the things of our world. Fear in the Lord: To be in awe at the wonders God has done for me. While all those being confirmed will gather with members of their family and special friends for this occasion, their Confirmation is a reminder for us too of the Spirit that has been gifted to us. The Spirit comes to us as a source of courage and strength to face the variety of challenges in our lives. The gifts of the Holy Spirit are also given to us so that we can respond with compassion to all those who have been knocked about by life s experiences.

Sunday 28th May CONFIRMATION CANDIDATES PIETY Then Jesus went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. His mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and in years, and in divine and human favour. Bishop Terry Curtin & Rev. Shane Hoctor Auok Arob Jenny Chen Joshua Dinatale Ethan Laurence Alana Luu Vincenzo Barillaro Patrick Comer Sienna Scaturchio Stephanie Perera Veronica Tootoo Lauren Musig Jayda Callerame Xavier Cicitta FEAR IN THE LORD Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all in common [Acts 2:23-44] [Luke 2:51-52] FORTITUDE May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance and the light. [Colossians 1:11-12] KNOWLEDGE And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless. [Philippians 1:9-10] COUNSEL WISDOM When they bring you to trial and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say; but say whatever is given to you at that time, for it is not you who speak but the Holy Spirit. The one who endures till the end will be saved. [Mark 13:11, 13b] UNDERSTANDING The wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality of hypocrisy. [James 3:17] Jesus said, You of little faith, why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves and how many baskets you gathered? [Matthew 16:8-9]

The Middle School Camp to Urban Camp Parkville was a great success. The Year 3 and 4 students enjoyed a great day at the Zoo learning about different animals and their habitats. This was followed by watching a netball and hockey match at the State Netball Centre. Day 2 was filled with great activities at the campsite. It was a great experience. Thanks to all the students and staff for making it a great experience.

Reading at home with your child. Thanks to the many parents who were able to attend the Reading at home with your child workshop last week. Here is a brief outline of what we covered to refresh you memory and to share with those who were unable to attend. Please remember that we are always happy to work with you on strategies that may help you and your child together at home. So feel free to ask questions at any time, or even suggest a workshop topic if there is something you would like to know more about. Always feel free to contact me on mklaic@sgreservoir.catholic.edu.au Brief points from the meeting. ALWAYS make reading at home with your child a positive and treasured time. It should not be a chore. Before you begin any book have a chat together about what you think the book may be about and what might happen in the book, this helps set the context. If your child is not sure about what might happen, you could offer some suggestions. Remind them, we are only predicting and there is no right or wrong. Sometimes it is valuable to read the pictures first and discuss before you read the words. This is an important Daily Five strategy. Please don t ever, ever, ever, cover the pictures. They provide valuable information to the reader. When reading we offer learners the opportunity to try to sound out words using their letter/sound knowledge. But if they try and are unable to, we help them by just saying the word. If they students reads a word incorrectly we can ask them did that make sense? We can also ask them to back up and read it again. Every now and then stop and check for understanding. Who is this about? What is happening? Some words are difficult to use the picture/sound cues to identify. These words just have to be learned. This website will help you with some games to help your child do this, it is only one of many sites that offer great suggestions for this People completely underestimate the value gained from your child seeing you read. So don t make them do all the work. Read a page each, or a chapter each. If your child is very tired, just read to them. Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered to them as a precious gift." Kate DiCamillo Happy reading everyone! Martine Klaic HYPERLINK
