IN THIS SESSION, we will look at the nature of true faith. We will see that biblical faith begins with a recognition and confession of our belief in the truthfulness of the gospel. Faith means we receive Christ personally as the Lord and Savior of our lives, and we rest upon Him alone for salvation. As children of God who live in the light, we are to express our faith through love for others. STEPS TO PREPARE 1. Read the main passages for this week s lesson, recording your insights and questions: 1 John 4:13-16 John 1:10-13; 3: Review the Teaching Plan (pp ). Refine the lesson plan based on your group s particular needs. Adjust the plan if necessary. 3. Study the Expanded Lesson Content (pp ). Determine what elements of this lesson are most applicable to your particular group. Consider ways to personalize the lesson content for you and your class. 4. Pray for the Lord s guidance as you lead your group through this material. LESSON OUTLINE TRUE FAITH IS 1. Recognizing the truth of the gospel (1 John 4:13-16). 2. 2 TEACHING PLAN NOTES: CONNECT OPTION 1 Open the discussion by pointing to bestselling songs and books that encourage us to believe in ourselves in order to reach our dreams. Discuss the problems with this generic faith in faith (p.130). What do you think is usually meant by the term person of faith? How might this description vary from person to person? Explain how biblical faith is different from many contemporary expressions of faith. Summarize this session as you transition to the first main point. OPTION 2 Lead students in a conversation about how much of our lives are lived by faith. Ask questions like: Do you plan on sleeping in your bed tonight? Why? Don t you see that you are acting in faith that your house will be there? That your parents won t kick you out? Those are probably pretty safe faith assumptions, because your parents are trustworthy. Why aren t you guys hoarding food? Because you have faith that food will be there when you get hungry; you trust the supermarket and your parents shopping. You live your lives in accord with that faith (you re not gathering survival gear, you re not growing your own garden, you re not making a bunker loaded with food). Follow up by explaining that acting in faith means living your life in line with God s promises and trusting Him to do what He says He will do. You trust Him to supply your needs, according to Matthew 6:33, and so you prioritize having an attitude that exalts Him, rather than letting your happiness ride on your current circumstances. 3 CONVEY TRUE FAITH IS 1. RECOGNIZING THE TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL. As you read 1 John 4:13-16, encourage students to look for some truths in this passage we must believe in order to be considered a Christian (p.131). Highlight the importance of getting Jesus identity right. It is crucial to believe the truth about Christ. Based on this passage in 1 John, what message are we called to believe? How would you respond to someone who claims to be a Christian yet does not believe what the Bible teaches about Jesus? Use the example of the man who believes he can fly, despite the law of gravity, and jumps off the roof. Show how biblical faith is believing in the truths about Jesus as revealed in Scripture (p.132). What does it mean to believe the love that God has for us? What is the relationship between believing God loves you and experiencing His love for you? At this point, consider using the story Responding to Truth in the Personal Study Guide (p.95) as a way to illustrate this point. A brief synopsis has been provided for you in the sidebar. 2. RECEIVING CHRIST AS SAVIOR AND LORD. We ve seen how faith involves believing in truths about Christ. Now, we turn to how we must receive Christ personally as Savior and Lord. Read John 1:10-13 to show the relationship between recognizing the truth about Jesus and receiving Him personally (pp ). Why is it important to receive Christ personally? How would you explain the difference between merely assenting to the truth of the gospel and personally receiving Christ as Savior and Lord? At this point, consider using the story Heart Knowledge in the Personal Study Guide (p.96) as a way to illustrate this point. A brief synopsis has been provided for you in the sidebar. Discuss how faith means more than merely assenting to doctrines about Christ; it requires personal reception of Jesus as Savior and Lord (p.133). Why is it important to not only believe that Jesus is the Messiah, but also to believe in Jesus the Messiah? In what ways does this personal relationship with Christ impact our lives? RESPONDING TO TRUTH Lee Strobel is a wellknown Christian apologist. Before he came to faith in Christ, Lee was an atheist. He researched both Christianity and other religions for over a year. At the end of that time, he came to believe in the truth of the gospel. Lee realized that it would take more faith for him not to believe the gospel than it would for him to believe its claims and turn his life over to Christ. In order to begin the process of coming to salvation, we must first understand and believe the truth of the gospel. We must place our faith in the gospel and look only to Christ for salvation. Have you ever reached a point of true belief in the gospel? Explain. HEART KNOWLEDGE I recently read the testimony of a man who was raised in church. From a young age, he was taught the truths of the Bible. But it took him a long time to truly understand salvation. His motivation for salvation was fear. His understanding of Christ was not complete. True faith is more than just knowing who Jesus is. We can believe in our heads that Jesus is Lord and that He came to save us from our sins, but without recognizing our own personal sinfulness and turning to Christ for salvation, our head knowledge is hollow and incomplete. Have you ever admitted your sinfulness and need of a Savior? Explain. The Gospel Project for Students 127

UNFOUNDED FAITH Several centuries ago, there lived a man named Johann Tetzel. He was a friar who was made his mark on history by selling pieces of paper that supposedly had the ability to forgive sins. The Church used them as a way to make a profit from the people of the day. But all of that changed when a man named Martin Luther called out the Church on many of their false practices. Luther was indignant with the Church for providing people with false hope for the forgiveness of sins. It may seem silly that people would place their faith in a piece of paper, but people place their faith on unfounded things even today. Only the work of Christ can save from sin. Our faith should rest on His work alone. Does your faith rest on Christ alone? If not, why not? 3. RESTING IN CHRIST ALONE FOR SALVATION. Read John 3: Highlight the startling simplicity of this verse, in that we are to believe in Christ (plus nothing) for salvation. Condemnation comes to those who do not believe in Christ. Use the example from Charles Spurgeon about the child who drops from a burning house into a strong man s arms in order to communicate the resting nature of faith (pp ). Why is trying to attain salvation through our good deeds offensive to God? What do our efforts to achieve our own salvation say about Christ s sacrifice? Connect our resting in Christ to our living in the light and pointing others to Christ. What are some practical ways we show we are children of God who live in the light? In what ways does this passage s teaching on judgment provide urgency for our evangelistic efforts? Before moving to the conclusion, address the issue of doubt and disillusionment. Remind students that it is not the size of our faith that matters but the strength of our Savior (p.136). At this point, consider using the story Unfounded Faith in the Personal Study Guide (p.99) as a way to illustrate this point. A brief synopsis has been provided for you in the sidebar. 5 COLLIDE The biblical teaching of faith has been misunderstood by many within our culture, both inside and outside the church. For some, faith has been nothing more than an intellectual assent to historical facts (ex: Jesus rose from the dead), while others believe it to be an intellectual leap into the dark and something opposed to reason and commonsense. Because of these gross misconceptions of biblical faith, it is vital that students know what genuine faith really is. Given that true faith is essential for salvation, we should strive to understand it. NOTES: How have you heard faith described? How do these descriptions align with the way faith is understood in the Bible? While there are a number of points of application that follow from this session, one in particular stands out for students the affirmation that true faith receives Christ as Savior and Lord. Some claim that people can accept Jesus as savior without accepting His lordship over their lives. According to these people, they can be saved because Jesus is their Savior, but they can simultaneously live their lives in a way that is contradictory to Jesus lordship. This session helps to dispel this myth by pointing to the biblical teaching of true faith. Why is it unbiblical to claim Jesus as Savior but not as Lord? How has this session challenged you in your relationship with Christ? Finally, this session shows how true faith leads to a life on mission. Far from living stagnant or for ourselves, true faith makes us resemble the Savior in all we do, thereby pointing people to Him as we live out His mission. 6 by Trevin Wax EXPANDED LESSON CONTENT TRUE FAITH IS RECOGNIZING THE TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL, RECEIVING CHRIST AS SAVIOR AND LORD, AND RESTING IN CHRIST ALONE FOR SALVATION. OPENING ILLUSTRATION AND DISCUSSION STARTER VOICES FROM CHURCH HISTORY Faith in faith is just positive thinking, but faith in Jesus is salvation. 1 Adrian Rogers Faith is popular nowadays. Look at the bestselling songs and you ll find a number of them telling you to just believe, and never give up the faith you need to follow your dreams. Look at bestselling books that urge you to have faith in yourself and your abilities so you can achieve your goals in life. Look at movies where the main characters learn how to summon the energy to believe in themselves and reach their destiny. Keep your ears and eyes open, and you ll find people talking about faith or describing someone as a person of faith. But what kind of faith is being talked about? It seems like the common use of the word faith in our culture is less about what we re putting our trust in and more about who is doing the trusting. The object of faith seems irrelevant. All you need is to just believe. If you just believe in yourself enough, you ll be able to do wonderful things! we are told. But what if there was a time when I truly believed I could do something but then failed? Is it because I didn t have what it takes to do something worthwhile? Or is it because I didn t have enough faith in myself? These kinds of questions should cause us to ask whether or not our society s view of faith squares with a biblical understanding. What do you think is usually meant by the term person of faith? How might this description vary from person to person? Biblical faith is not just about the person who believes. It s about the Person whom we believe in. It s not about having faith in a general sense, but putting our trust in Someone who is actually worthy of our faith. The object of our faith is what matters. Put your faith in the wrong thing, and it doesn t matter how much you believe. 130 Leader Guide

TRUE FAITH IS RECOGNIZING THE TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL (1 JOHN 4:13-16). There are plenty of people in our society who believe in a God of some sort. Perhaps their view of God is close to the Bible s portrayal. Perhaps their view is different. Nevertheless, the majority of the world s population believes in a higher power, a divine being. Atheistic apologists may make a lot of noise, but most people go on believing God exists, even if they have wide-ranging views on what that God is like or how involved He is in our lives. Christians also believe in the existence of God, but we are distinct from the world in what we affirm about this God who exists. Specifically speaking, we believe in the gospel the good news about Jesus Christ and what He has done for us. We don t believe in a generic God or an impersonal force. We believe in a God who has revealed Himself: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In the apostle John s letter near the end of the New Testament, we see how Christian faith is closely connected to particular truths about Jesus. To be a Christian is to recognize the truth of who Jesus is and what He has done. By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. (1 John 4:13-16) Notice the truths that a Christian must believe. First, we believe the message about Jesus - that the Father has sent His Son as the world s Savior (v. 14). This means we believe Jesus is the Messiah who saves us from sin. Getting Jesus identity right is essential to a biblical understanding of faith. Near the end of John s Gospel, we find this statement: Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name (John 20:30-31). John puts the purpose of His writing front and center. I want you to believe Jesus is the Messiah. In other words, believe the truth about Jesus identity. Jesus Himself warned about failing to get His identity right. In a heated confrontation with the Jewish leaders of His day, Jesus said, Unless you believe that I am he [the Messiah] you will die in your sins (John 8:24). This black-and-white statement of truth is difficult to square with our world s understanding of faith that says, It doesn t matter what you believe, so long as you mean it. According to Jesus, believing the wrong thing about Him has eternal consequences. The Gospel Project for Students 131

Based on this passage in 1 John, what message are we called to believe? How would you respond to someone who claims to be a Christian yet does not believe what the Bible teaches about Jesus? VOICES FROM CHURCH HISTORY We must have a true if limited knowledge of the object of faith before true faith can exist; and true faith opens the way to fuller knowledge. A general faith in Christ and self-surrender to Him prepared the disciples for a loftier apprehension of His character. The actual experience of love includes the promise of a larger manifestation of its treasures. 2 B. F. Westcott Imagine if a man refused to believe in the law of gravity. Taking R. Kelly s song, I Believe I Can Fly literally, he makes his way up to the roof of his home, stretches out his arms, and says to himself, If I believe strongly enough, I can jump off the roof and soar into the sky just like a bird! He summons up all his courage and belief, tells the naysayers they are intolerant for denying his sincerity, and then jumps off the roof. I don t have to tell you the end of this sad little tale. You see, you and I know that no matter how much faith that guy can muster up, it isn t going to change the law of gravity. True faith biblical faith is similar. We recognize the truth of the gospel, that Jesus is who He says He is. Closely connected to this message is the promise of God s love. Look at verse 16 again where it says we have come to know and believe God s love for us. At the heart of the gospel is God s love for humanity expressed through His saving work on our behalf. We experience this love and believe it is real. We are not in the middle of a fairy tale, creating interesting stories to make ourselves feel better. We know this message is true. That is why we believe it. What does it mean to believe the love God has for us? What is the relationship between believing God loves you and experiencing His love for you? 2. RECEIVING CHRIST AS SAVIOR AND LORD (JOHN 1:10-13). FURTHER COMMENTARY To receive Jesus is to be born from above and to become a member of God s family, all of which comes to us as a gift of God s grace (John 1:9-13), not at all of our own doing. 3 Scotty Smith We ve seen that biblical faith involves believing the message about Jesus. It involves truths (like, Jesus is the Messiah). But faith in the biblical sense does not stop with mere propositions. Those propositions carry us into the arms of a Person. One does not become a Christian merely by assenting to biblical statements about Jesus. One becomes a Christian by receiving Christ personally as Savior and Lord. We believe the Bible s message about Jesus is true. But even more than this, we believe in Jesus personally. We surrender our lives to Him as Savior and King. We can see how the message about Jesus and our personal faith in Jesus are connected by looking at part of the prologue to John s Gospel. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. (John 1:10-13) 132 Leader Guide

There is a strong connection between recognizing the truth about Jesus and recognizing Jesus Himself. As this passage shows, when Jesus came to His own people, they did not receive Him. We see from the Gospel of John that when people failed to believe in Jesus testimony about Himself, they also rejected Jesus personally. Failure to recognize the truth of the message leads to failure to receive Jesus. On the flip side, however, the apostle John shows us what biblical faith looks like. It involves a receiving of Christ. This is much more than nodding your head at what the Bible says about Jesus. It involves giving your heart to Him as Savior and King. It means receiving Christ into your life, so that you will be welcomed into the family of God and made His children. What is the mark of those who are children of God? They believe in His name. Do you see how we ve moved beyond receiving a message about Jesus to receiving Jesus Himself? Biblical faith is receiving Jesus as He is, not shaping Him into our image, or making Him out to be whatever we want. Why is it important to receive Christ personally? How would you explain the difference between merely assenting to the truth of the gospel and personally receiving Christ as Savior and Lord? In the previous session, we looked at conversion through the angle of repentance. In this session, we are examining conversion through the angle of faith. It is important for us to remember that both of these go hand in hand. When we repent of our sins, we change directions and are transferred from one kingdom to another. We receive Jesus as Lord. When we put our faith in Christ, we move from darkness to light, trusting in Jesus as Savior. I ve often counseled people with a nominal Christian background, people who would affirm many of the truths of Christianity and can check off major doctrines about Jesus. But when pressed, they recognize that their religious assent has little to no impact on their lives. They may assent to certain truths about Jesus, but they have never received Him personally. They believe in the facts regarding His perfect life, His death on the cross, and His resurrection, but they have not received Him into their lives. In these situations, we must remind people that from a biblical standpoint, believing in a message is not enough; one must receive Christ personally (by repenting of sins and trusting in Christ as Lord and Savior) in order to experience salvation. Why is it important to not only believe that Jesus is the Messiah, but also to believe in Jesus the Messiah? In what ways does this personal relationship with Christ impact our lives? FURTHER COMMENTARY To be a child of God comes by way of God s gift through human receiving. The Johannine idea is thus quite similar to the Pauline idea that justification comes by way of grace as a gift that is received through faith (cf. Rom 3:24 25; Eph 2:8) Believing, like knowing, in John does not stress head-type information. By the time the evangelist wrote his Gospel, he recognized that great care had to be taken in communicating the idea of believing because of the wrong perspectives that were infiltrating Christian communities. Among those perspectives were incipient Gnostic views. As these perspectives became more defined, they stressed that knowledge of one s origin and essence was the key to salvation. But John knew that the core of the Gospel was focused not so much on what you know or what you believe but rather whom you know and in whom you believe. 4 Gerald L. Borchet The Gospel Project for Students 133

3. RESTING IN CHRIST ALONE FOR SALVATION (JOHN 3:16-21). VOICES FROM CHURCH HISTORY The whole of our Christian life is a life of faith. 5 D. B. Knox FURTHER COMMENTARY God, out of love, gave His One and Only Son (cp. 1:14,18), so that everyone who believes in Him will have eternal life (see notes at 5:26 and 14:6). John s favorite designation for Jesus is the Son sent by the Father (3:34-36; 5:19-26; 6:40; 8:35-36; 14:13; 17:1). Being sent implies that the commission, charge, and message are issued by the sender rather than originating with the ones sent. The messengers role is to fulfill their commission according to their sender s will. 6 Andreas J. Köstenberger Not only does true faith involve recognizing the truth of the gospel and receiving Christ as Savior and Lord, it also means we are to rest in Him alone for salvation. In other words, we don t put our trust in Jesus plus something else. It s Jesus alone who saves. One of the most famous passages of Scripture reminds us of our need to believe in Jesus in order to escape judgment for our sins: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God. (John 3:16-21) We saw earlier how the gospel is the good news of God s love for the world, expressed in the giving of His Son. That glorious truth is reiterated in this passage. But note that the way to be saved and not perish is to believe in Jesus Christ. Believing in Christ means we put our full trust in Him for salvation. No one and nothing else saves. John 3:16 is one of the Bible s best-known verses, but I sometimes think we fail to grapple with its simplicity. It would be easy for people to rewrite that last part of verse 16 to add works to salvation. So that everyone who believes in Him and lives a good life, perhaps. Or So that everyone who believes in Him and gives generously to the poor. Or So that everyone who believes in Him and promises to never sin again will not perish I m convinced that many of us who know John 3:16 in our heads have never let the simplicity of salvation sink deep into our hearts. We have a self-justifying tendency to add to Christ s work, as if Jesus work needs our support. The Bible won t let us go there. Biblical faith is not about relying on Jesus as He is propped up by our good deeds. It s trusting in Him alone for salvation. It s personally putting our faith in Him. Why? Because that s the only way to escape judgment. The passage makes this clear in verses Condemnation comes to those who do not believe in Christ. Only when we put our trust in the One and Only Son of God are we able to join the family of God and be safe from the righteous judgment our sins deserve. To illustrate this aspect of trust, Charles Spurgeon told a story about a fire in the upper room of a house. How is he to escape? He cannot leap down he would be dashed to pieces. A strong man comes beneath and cries, Drop 134 Leader Guide

into my arms. It is a part of faith to know that the man is there; it is another part of faith to believe that the man is strong. But the essence of faith lies in the dropping down into the man s arms. That is the proof of faith and the real essence of it. Spurgeon then pleaded with people in his congregation to rely solely on Christ and not their good deeds. So, sinner, you are to know that Christ died for sin. You are also to understand that Christ is able to save, and you are to believe that, but you are not saved unless in addition to that, you put your trust in Him to be your Savior and to be yours forever. 8 Why is trying to attain salvation through our good deeds offensive to God? What do our efforts to achieve our own salvation say about Christ s sacrifice? Wait a minute, some will say. If true faith means we are resting in Christ alone for salvation, then does that mean it doesn t matter how we live? Should we go on sinning? Absolutely not! True faith is expressed in our deeds. But our good deeds are the fruit, not the root, of our salvation. If someone shows no sign of salvation, we can legitimately wonder if they have true faith (Jas. 2). Resting in Christ does not mean we go on sinning. It means we recognize our utter need for His salvation, and then we live in His light and leave behind the works of darkness. This is the point verses make. Living by the truth means living in the light. We rest in Christ alone for salvation, and then we work not to earn grace, but as a response to grace. Resting in Christ leads us to living in His light and not the works of darkness (vv ). VOICES FROM CHURCH HISTORY If you put one atom of trust in yourself, you have no faith Christ will have all or nothing. He must be a whole Savior or none at all. 7 Charles Spurgeon VOICES FROM THE CHURCH It is not great faith we need: it is faith in a great God. 9 N. T. Wright What are some practical ways we show we are children of God who live in the light? In what ways does this passage s teaching on judgment provide urgency for our evangelistic efforts? Resting in Christ also does not preclude seasons of doubt and difficulty in our lives. Some of the most well-known believers throughout church history passed through dark moments of despair and doubt. Tragedies strike and rock the foundation of our faith. At times, it seems like God is absent or distant, failing to listen to or respond to our prayers. Is it possible to be a faithful Christian and yet experience doubt and disillusionment? The Gospel Project for Students 135

VOICES FROM CHURCH HISTORY The Christian life demands not merely the acknowledgement of Christ s significance but our willingness to join Christ in carrying out His mission. 10 Chuck Colson REFERENCES The answer to this question is yes. Why? Because resting in Christ is not resting in the strength of our faith. It s resting in the strength of Jesus. Even when our faith seems so small and ineffective, our God is mighty. Remember, it s not the size of your faith that matters most; it s the size of the Savior in whom we trust. Looking to Him and recalling the hope we have in things unseen (Heb. 11:1), we can regain the confidence of biblical faith. Like the desperate father who cried out to Jesus on behalf of his son, we say, Lord, I believe! Help my unbelief (cf. Mark 9:24). CONCLUSION Conversion involves repentance and faith, turning from sin and turning to God. When it comes to faith, we are not only turning from sin, but also from self. We are renouncing any effort to try and purchase our own salvation, recognizing that Jesus alone can save us. Salvation comes through Jesus Christ alone, but our faith shows itself in our actions. The more we trust in Jesus, the more we are to become like Him. Growing in our faith means to grow in our resemblance to Him. This is why we are called to be on mission. The missionary Savior who gave His life for us is the One who calls us to give our lives for others, to join Him in His mission of changing lives. We spread the good news by proclaiming the events at the heart of our faith, by calling people to receive Christ as Savior and Lord, and to rest in Him alone for salvation. 1.
