First an instrument of torture, Then an instrument of love. First a place of defeat, Then a place of victory. First a symbol of shame, Then a symbol of glory. There is a horrific type of beauty in the cross.
February 21, 2016 Greeting The Second Sunday of the Lenten Season - The Beauty of the Cross - Ed Rollins Prelude The King of Love My Shepherd Is arr. Englert Call to Worship (responsive) Our Worship of God ( Indicates those who are able, please stand.) God is our light and our salvation; whom shall we fear? God is our shelter and refuge on the days of trouble, and our hope and joy on the days of celebration! 11:15 am Psalm 27 (responsive) for God is among and within us! Thanks be to God! Anne Gifford The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When evildoers assail me to devour my flesh my adversaries and foes they shall stumble and fall. Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war rise up against me, yet I will be confident. One thing I asked of the Lord, that I will seek after: to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple. For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will set me high on a rock. Refrain Day after day, we seek God s face and the assurance of God s holy love: O God, do not turn from us or hide your face from us! Be our guide and our light instead! Now my head is lifted up above my enemies all around me, and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; One thing we ask of God: I will sing and make melody to the Lord. That we may live in God s dwelling place all the days of our life, Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud, and never cease to behold the beauty of God s home. be gracious to me and answer me! Come, my hearts says, seek his face! Beloved of God, enter this worship in thanksgiving, Your face, Lord, do I seek. 2 3
Do not hide your face from me. Do not turn your servant away in anger, you who have been my help. Do not cast me off, do not forsake me, O God of my salvation! If my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will take me up. Teach me your way, O Lord, and lead me on a level path because of my enemies. Refrain Invocation Processional Hymn 77 Passing of the Peace *** As God has given us peace through Christ, so let us pass the peace of Christ to each other. Praise to the Lord, the Almighty Anthem Stay With Us Pelz Kristine Poulson, flute Do not give me up to the will of my adversaries, for false witnesses have risen against me, and they are breathing out violence. I believe that I shall see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord! Refrain Stay with us, till night has come: our praise to you this day be sung. Bless our bread, open our eyes: Jesus, be our great surprise. Walk with us, our spirits sigh: hear when our weary spirits cry. Feel again our loss, our pain: Jesus, take us to your side. Walk with us, the road will bend: make all our weeping, wailing end. Wipe our tears, forgive our fears: Jesus, lift the heavy cross. Talk with us till we behold a joyful life unfold: Heal our eyes to see the prize: take us to the light. Stay with us, till day is done: 4 5
Prayer of Confession (responsive) no tears nor dark shall dim the sun: cheer the heart your grace impart. Jesus, bring eternal life. Let us confess our failures, and renounce our sins. Let us pray. Please hear us, loving God, when we cry to you, be gracious to us and answer our prayer. Wait; yes my soul, wait on the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ... Loving God, you are not impatient and tight fisted like us, your generosity flows freely to all your creatures. We praise you that our sins are forgiven, and that the future has again become an open door. Thanks be to you, God of grace and glory! Through Christ Jesus our Savior. Amen! Movement to the Cross If we have slid away from new opportunities, or failed to give our best effort to long familiar duties, forgive us and restore us merciful Friend. Christ Jesus is our light and salvation, of whom shall we be afraid? Following a time of confession, liturgical churches most always declare an assurance of pardon. As we have confessed together, let us move to the cross to light a candle as a symbol of God s light, salvation, and forgiveness. Through the ugliness of the cross we find the beauty of forgiveness. Scripture Reading Anne Gifford If we have become weary, and slipped into mirroring the prejudices and dissatisfactions Ecclesiastes 1:1-11 of a greedy and unjust world, forgive us and heal us merciful Friend. The words of the Teacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. Christ Jesus is our light and salvation, of whom shall we be afraid? Vanity of vanities, says the Teacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity. What do people gain from all the toil at which they toil under the sun? If we have performed well in public, A generation goes, and a generation comes, but the earth remains forever. smoothly keeping up appearances, The sun rises and the sun goes down, and hurries to the place where it rises. while our personal faith has grown shabby and weak, The wind blows to the south, and goes around to the north; forgive us and rehabilitate us, merciful Friend. round and round goes the wind, and on its circuits the wind returns. Christ Jesus is our light and salvation, All streams run to the sea, but the sea is not full; of whom shall we be afraid? to the place where the streams flow, there they continue to flow. All things are wearisome; more than one can express; Wait for the Lord. the eye is not satisfied with seeing, or the ear filled with hearing. 6 Be strong and allow your heart to take courage. What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done; 7
there is nothing new under the sun. Is there a thing of which it is said, See, this is new? It has already been, in the ages before us. The people of long ago are not remembered, nor will there be any remembrance of people yet to come by those who come after them. Ecclesiastes 2:24-26 There is nothing better for mortals than to eat and drink, and find enjoyment in their toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God; for apart from him who can eat or who can have enjoyment? For to the one who pleases him God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy; but to the sinner he gives the work of gathering and heaping, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a chasing after wind. name of the Lord. The Gospel of our Lord. Praise be to Christ. Message Ecclesiastes and His Cross: Dr. Milton Horne Leanings Toward Tragicomedy Hymn of Commitment Offertory Sentence (see next page) Glory In the Cross Offertory Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silent arr. Cassler Hymn 669 Gospel Reading Luke 13:31-35 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. God of Grace and God of Glory Dr. Milton Horne Benediction Dismissal Postlude At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, Get away from here, for Herod wants to kill you. He said to them, Go and tell that fox for me, Listen, I am casting out demons and performing cures today and tomorrow, and on the third day I finish my work. Yet today, tomorrow, and the next day I must be on my way, because it is impossible for a prophet to be killed outside of Jerusalem. Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! See, your house is left to you. And I tell you, you will not see 8 me until the time comes when you say, Blessed is the one who comes in the 9
Glory In the Cross Worship Notes Cover Image: As Part of our Lenten theme, The Beauty of the Cross, many First Baptist members and friends have colored a cross. Different samples of this work will be in our bulletins each week, while other artistic renditions may be found at various locations in our building. Refrain: The Lord Is My Light- Words and Music: The Community of Taizé 1991 Ateliers et Presses de Taizé. All rights reserved. Reprinted under OneLicense.net #A Used by permission. Glory in the Cross Words: Dan Schutte. Music: Dan Schutte Daniel L. Schutte, admin. by OCP. All rights reserved. Reprinted under OneLicense.net #A Used by permission. Guest Pastor: Dr. Milton Horne Milton Horne is a professor of religion at William Jewell, where he has taught since He holds the DPhil in Theology (1990) from Oxford University, specializing in Hebrew Scriptures (Job, Proverbs and Ecclesiastes); and the MDiv (1983) from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He completed his undergraduate BA in English (1979) at University of Missouri, Columbia, during which time he and his wife Karen lived in Harrisburg, Missouri, while he pastored the Harrisburg Baptist Church. Dr. Horne is a musician (pianist) and a Registered Piano Technician (Piano Technicians Guild). He and his wife, Karen, have raised two sons, Robert and Jared, and now have two grandchildren, August and Alice. Dr. Horne s series of sermons here at First Baptist will explore the way that the thinking of Ecclesiastes prepares believers to appreciate the tragi-comedic (a literary genre that blends aspects of both tragic and comic forms) aspects of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. The affirmation of the cross as both beautiful and horrific invites disciples to interpret the cross as more than mere contradiction and paradox, but as tragi-comedy. Lives of discipleship must themselves move beyond paradox in the ways that comedy grows from and interweaves around great tragi-comedic plots of our lives
Announcements Volunteer Now for Room at the Inn Announcements Video Highlighting First Baptist Room at the Inn arrives today! Room at the Inn is a winter shelter designed to provide a warm place to sleep for those in need from 7:00 pm- 7:00 am through March 4. You can click on the Rotator on the church website (fbc-columbia.org) to sign up for volunteer slots. Sign up today to help! Youth Envelope Challenge If you would like to help make sure that every student who wants to go to events like youth camp, fall retreat, and other ministry outings has the resources available to them to participate, check out the Youth Envelope Challenge located on the bulletin board in the Children's Building hallway during the month of February. All the money raised by this challenge will go directly to the Youth Scholarship Fund, which allows us to work with families who need assistance to make sure no student is left out because of financial constraints. Last year, this fundraiser raised enough money to cover our scholarship needs for the entire year. Instead of coming to the church with multiple fundraisers throughout the year, we ve made the process simple. Just choose an envelope (or several) from the board, place the amount of money on the outside in the envelope, and drop it in the offering. Your gifts go a long way in making our ministry possible. Thank you in advance for your generosity. The Telling Team, one of First Baptist s ministry teams, is charged with promoting First Baptist in the community and encouraging people to visit our church. The Telling Team has contracted with Visionworks Marketing Group and Shelia Kausler to produce a short video about the church. Our hope is that the video can be used on the church website, on Facebook, on YouTube and perhaps in other ways to spread the word about First Baptist. Shelia Kausler, a member at First Baptist, will be filming in worship, in Sunday Morning Small Groups, and at other First Baptist functions, collecting footage for the video. Many of you have already signed a talent releasing giving us permission to use your smiling faces. However, if you do not wish to appear in the video please do not hesitate to let the church office know by sending an to Madison Reynolds at churchinfo@fbc-columbia.org. Flower Vase Collection Have any extra vases taking up space under your kitchen sink? If so, the Diaconate Team would love to have them! We are in need of vessels to transport flowers to members who are either home bound or in the hospital after service on Sunday. There will be a collection box in the elevator lobby starting this Sunday, February 7th. If you have any questions please contact Rena Tratchel at rjtratchel@gmail.com. Movie Night March 12 at 5:30 pm Michael McEntyre First Baptist presents a Movie Night for all ages! The movie is rated PG-13 for some language and sexuality. We hope you'll stay for a brief discussion following the movie. Childcare will be available for infants and preschoolers.
