The Voice WORDS FROM OUR STAFF SNOWFLAKES Dr. Larry Snow For five years or so I have participated in the Good Friday Walk of the Cross. The event was originally designed by lay people from St. Pious Catholic Church. For most years I have found it to be a wonderful experience; walking with Christians of every stripe as we remember the suffering of Jesus and the suffering of people in our community. Over the years the event has gotten shorter as they figured out that many people couldn t walk that far. They ve also taken out some of the stops as they figured out that not everybody was getting to the end of the trail. One of the huge problems has been about Planned Parenthood. Two years ago the Catholics who wrote the script were willing to say things about abortion that the rest of us found offensive. Lots of us complained. Because of that experience lots of Protestants were unwilling to participate again. Last year was better the offensive language was softened but the idea was still there. I complained again. I didn t just want to walk away from the event I believe there is the possibility for great good to come out of this kind of ecumenical event. It s the only time of the year that Christians come together. This year David Randall Bodman the Senior Minister at Bethel United Church of Christ and I have been given the power to edit the script. If there is offensive language in the script we hope we can just take it out. This ought to be a positive experience. It ought to be one that symbolizes our unity as Christians and how the cross is central to the Christian faith. This isn t a time for offense and division. We ll see. I have already rewritten the script for the stop we are in charge of the one about hunger. I think this year will be a better experience than the past two years. I hope you ll join us. But anyway, as most of you already know, working ecumenically is hard work that requires real commitment but I believe that is what it means to be a disciple of Jesus and a Disciple of Christ. 21 that they may all be one (John 17:21, NRSV). See you in Church 2
For the Week of February March 22 & 29, 2015 Musings Rev. Karyn Dix It is newsletter week again. I have written all the other articles that I need to write and then I sit and ponder what else I have to say. What is it I really want to say? As I sit and think about our church, as I think about the world we live in what is tugging at me to be shared? Some weeks it is easy, there is so much bumping around in my head, so much pulling at my heart. Some weeks it is not so easy, everything I am thinking about has already been put into another article. This week I had decided to write about Pray and Play. About how it is a great opportunity to connect with other women in the Region and about how important it is for us to connect. That is what I planned to write about yesterday. And then, before I sat down to type I got a phone call. And I was off to the Hospital. I am not a stranger to the hospital. I have visited many of you there. But this visit was different. This time I was going as a daughter, to sit with my mom, who had just had a seizure. It was a long and hard afternoon/evening. And so, I didn t write about Pray and Play. Instead, I sat for hours with nothing to do but sit and wait, and watch as life in the ER passed by. I watched as EMTs came and went and came again. There was never a lull in the activity around me. I found myself wondering when these EMT s did their reports. When did they get to take a breather? And I thought about the police officers who come into our building to get a moment of quiet and a cup of coffee, who sit and write their reports in the quiet space we provide. It is such a simple ministry for us. We provide space, coffee, water, and snacks. I found myself wondering if there was a way to expand this ministry to include other First Responders in our ministry. I wonder what that would look like. 3
The Voice Kidz Corner On Psalm Sunday our children will be focusing on Mark 11 as they journey through Holy Week. They will see how Psalm Sunday shows us how often we misinterpret God s love, as well as our love for God. The true measure of our love must comprise the capacity to extend ourselves in real acts of compassion towards the afflicted, forcing us to come out of ourselves. So, Jesus gets on a jackass and parades among the psalms towards Jerusalem. This act requires the greatest love. Now that the auction is over we are ready to begin our worship planning process for the Mission Trips. It is always great to see how our ideas of worship change and evolve over time do we will take our time and explore and plan throughout the rest of the spring. And we will have some fun too! On March 29 th we will be bowling at the new SuperPlay on Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy (The old Valley Lanes). The fun will begin at 5 pm, the cost is $12 per person (help is available as needed). Talk to Karyn for more infor- VBS is August 3-8 Tell all your friends, the registration link for VBS is live from our web site. Last year we had about 80 children here the week of VBS and we anticipate a similar number again this year. We still need station leaders and shepherds. Contact Karyn or Katie Eide to see how you can help. 4

7 For the Week of October 5 & 12, 2014 For the Week of March 22 & 29, 2015
The Voice The Voice Walk of the Cross For Peace and Justice Good Friday, April 3, :00 AM - Noon Join us for an Ecumenical pilgrimage, beginning at a new location: Bethel Congregational United Church of Christ 5150 SW Watson Avenue, Beaverton Ending at St. Cecilia Catholic Church 5 th and Franklin Avenue, Beaverton The Walk is a one-mile pilgrimage through downtown Beaverton, with stops at several different stations. At each station we will reflect, pray and share stories of the injustices we experience in our lives, as well as witness to Christ's power for transformation and resurrection present in our community. Walking between the stations, participants carry a large cross to remind us of the cross that Christ carried over 2000 years ago and which is still being carried today. We invite Christians from every denomination to join us for the Walk and to reflect together on how we can better understand and carry out Christ s mission of Peace and Justice in our day. All are Welcome! For more information contact Eileen Sleva eileen.sleva@gmail.com Easter speaks to a Christian s spirituality like no other time on the year. For it is in the resurrection so many years ago that we claim oneness with the risen Christ, that we enter into God s love and grace. The gospels reference dawn as the time when the believers slowly gained awareness of their Savior s conquest of death, and we can commence our celebration of His resurrection in this same hour. A Sunrise Gathering for scripture, prayer, communion and silence is planned for Easter Sunday at 6:30 AM at the quarry overlook next to Walmart. To get there, turn off SW Murray Boulevard onto SW Maverick Terrace. Take a right at the stop sign onto SW 147 th Terrace, then a left onto SW Cistrine Way and then another left onto SW Cistrine Loop. There is a pathway on the left through the fence that leads up to the overlook. The Gathering is on for rain or shine, and if the sky s clear when the sun rises at 6:44 AM, the inspiration will be spectacular on many levels. This is an informal muster of kindred Christian spirits, so all are welcome. He Is Risen! - Dal Norris
