Knob Hill United Church, 23 Gage Avenue, Scarborough, ON, M1J 1T3 or Minister: Rev. Hannah Lee, Dear Friends, Roll away your stone I will roll away mine /Together we can see what we will find. Mumford & Sons, Roll Away Your Stone The journey through Easter is one of movement. From rolling away the stone at Jesus tomb to stones flying at the Church s first martyr. From the women rushing to tell the disciples that Jesus is gone to the members of the early church gathering and supporting one another. From Jesus walking with his disciples on the road to Emmaus to the movement of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. And Jesus sends his disciples out to go and share his message of love, justice, and peace with the whole world. I don t know if Mumford & Sons were thinking about the Resurrection when they wrote the lyrics to Roll Away Your Stone, but I like the way it personalizes the idea of uncovering the unknown while escorted by God s grace. When the stone is rolled away on Easter Jesus is gone! But he soon reappears the risen Christ to his friends and disciples. Their fear and sadness turn to joy! As Easter people we are called to be witnesses to the new life, hope, and renewal that are part of the Resurrection. There are plenty of times when we as individuals and as a church need God s grace and love to see us through times when we doubt and disagree, but our Easter call is clear! Christ is risen! We can respond Christ is risen indeed! through our words and our actions as witnesses to the power of God s love. At our Annual Meeting in March, and in our Sunday morning worship, we have been grappling with our changing church not just our Knob Hill community, but The United Church of Canada. It may seem like we are in the winter of our life cycle, but the promise of spring is here and now! In a time of uncertainties and changes in our lives, our faithful community offers comfort, renewal, and hope. Many good seeds are planted here. Here, we find a safe togetherness, shared meals, common goals, and joyful celebrations. This is truly a loving and beloved community. Not only are we Easter people, we are also an eastering people. We are engaging in an ongoing process of transforming ourselves, making anew, turning us into peace-makers, converting us into people of forgiveness and compassion, and sharing in God s joy. It means freeing ourselves from the bonds that hold us back, letting go of hurts and resentments, and forgiving ourselves and others. It means embracing who we are: beautiful, beloved, and created by a loving God. This spring, let us share God s joy and delight! May God Easter in you and in me! Blessings, (Rev.) Hannah Lee, Minister

EDITOR S NOTE Amazing things have been happening since the GC42 s decision to wholeheartedly accept the six significant changes recommended by Rev. Cathy Hamilton, the chair of the Comprehensive Review Task Force task group. UCC has moved swiftly to implement changes on both the financial and structural levels of its operations not only by working on reducing its 2015 spending levels by $10M but also administering 8 Remits. The GC is in the process of consolidating its office space on one floor of the building it is presently occupying until In the meantime, talks are ongoing re the possibility of relocating and sharing space as well as resources with other denominations, such as Presbyterian and/or Anglican. Consideration is also being given to the possibility of renting space within a renovated church complex that is currently being redeveloped. As well, in-person meetings held by the GC Executive and its four Permanent Committees are being conducted by means of tele- and video-conferences; for example, the expenses for the last GC Executive meeting held in November 2016 were close to $3000 in comparison with 2015 in-person meeting costs of approximately $61,000. Rental cost will be lessened by $1M/yr; similarly, greater cost savings will be realized in the future as more meetings embrace technological forms of communication. In addition, reductions in GC office staff are being achieved by combining the duties of existing vacancies. It is anticipated that these changes will enable the UCC to better sustain itself financially and simplify its governance and administration. New and diverse approaches to ministry are cropping up across the UCC; innovative ideas are being encouraged and supported financially through the Embracing the Spirit initiative. Did you know that a church runs an art festival in Winnipeg that draws more than 2,000 people or that a church in Hanover, Ontario, is connecting people through a drumming circle? As UCC continues to move forward into the 21 st century with its goal of renewal, new priorities have also emerged. A major one of these is the emphasis on Ecumenical Partnerships, as well as the development of Interfaith, and Interchurch Relations on local, national and global levels. Such collaboration enables the UCC to explore issues of faith and act toward justice, peace, and integrity of creation. Below is a visual representation of a service held at University of Toronto s Emmanuel College Chapel in February. UCC pastoral charges are being encouraged to explore similar ecumenical connections in their own neighbourhoods.. Despite the drastic reduction in Sunday morning church attendance in many church denominations, many people describe themselves as spiritual rather than religious. They expect the Church to continue existing as one of the vital institutions within society albeit quite different from the past. Ed. comments are combined with information adapted from

Annual Congregational Meeting - March 26, 2017 Twenty-seven (27) people attended the meeting which commenced at 12:10 p.m.. Rev. Hannah Lee acknowledged the Indigenous people (Mississauga, Anishinabek, Haudenosaunee, and Wendat) who were the previous stewards of the land on which KHUC was built. She read from Ecclesiastes and lit the Christ candle. She also prayerfully remembered not only Mildred Burke, Gord Ferguson, Doris Bent, John Veilands, Bill Erz, Doris MacGregor, Harold Bent, Audrey Thiessen and Archie Davidson who joined God, their creator in 2016, but also Vera Trimble and Bernice Rees both of whom recently passed away in February ====================================================================== AGM Business Rev. Lee encouraged attendees to reflect on KHUC s journey over the past year and celebrate the signs of renewal within our congregation despite its smallness in size; in her report, she encouraged members to look towards the future for new possibilities and opportunities to continue serving God s mission in our neighbourhood and in the world. All reports were approved as printed in the 2015 Annual Report. Bob Mears, the chair of the Property Committee, noted that the church s entire roof needs to be replaced at an estimated cost of $25, It was suggested that KHUC begin an immediate exploration of whether the United Church of Canada may have capital or modernization grants available to help churches cover such replacement costs. As well, he mentioned that the roof above the central stairwell (expected to cost $7,500.00) is in urgent need of repair; a fund-raiser will be launched to cover this operational expense. Brian Coker, the chair of Finance mentioned that KHUC s financial health is heavily dependent on rental revenue especially from the day care whose maximum capacity is 49 children; currently, there are 44 children and infants enrolled. Rental fees have been raised for other miscellaneous renters to align KHUC with other churches. Teresa Barry raised a concern about how receipted donations were reported. Brian explained that standard bookkeeping practice and directives by Presbytery required some donations to be posted as

Assets - for example, memorial donations given for a specific purpose. After discussion, it was suggested that Clyde Harris, the KHUC financial consultant, be invited to a Council meeting to provide a more detailed explanation. James mentioned that KHUC needs to increase its membership; he inquired whether KHUC could take a proactive approach through talks with Church of the Master prior to its official closing. Hedy Baker-Graf reported that with the acceptance of Remit #8 by the majority of presbyteries by the February 17 th, 2017 deadline, a new model of membership has been proposed; this will allow supporters and members of other denominations to become Associate members and participate fully in the life and work of a pastoral charge. Rev Lee added that KHUC has already completed four of the five Category #3 Remits on which pastoral charges are required to vote; thus, KHUC s Council is involved in shaping the future of the wider church through its decisions made on behalf of the congregation. Frances Ferguson, the KHUC Council Chair exhorted attendees to bring any suggestions and/or concerns re KHUC to her attention. No further questions were raised; thus, Rev. Lee closed the AGM with prayer. The meeting was adjourned at 1:10 p.m. Mary Horstman & Helen McBrien Nada Bozic-Conliffe, Brian Coker & Tracy Odell Scott Bradley, Jan Johnson, Len Ramsey & Pauline Grierson Rev. 7 Toronto Conference of the United Church of Canada TORONTO CONFERENCE: Standing Together in Love & Friendship: TC resists the divisive power of violence and hate In response to recent events targeting people of Islamic faith in our country and in our community, Toronto Conference s President expressed her sorrow at the acts of violence and hatred committed against our brothers and sisters of other faiths. We give thanks for the precious Religious Freedom that we know in Canada; this should never be taken for granted, for we are only free, if all are free to live and worship in safety, peace and order. In response to the request of TC s President, several churches have written letters of support to their neighbourhood Muslim churches and organizations. Annual General Meeting: May 26 th 27 th in Midland, ON The current TC Executive has been asked to extend its term for one more year until the Remit process is completed in Changes are expected if the Three Council model is approved. KHUC Council has approved Rev. H. Lee and Presbytery Rep., Hedy Baker-Graf s, attendance.

NEWS FROM GENERAL COUNCIL, CONFERENCE, AND PRESBYTERY Ed. s Note: The information presented in these reports have been adapted from details provided on various websites linked to the United Church of Canada. Embracing the Spirit Initiatives People in Partnership Property Inventory Education Centres Position on Physician Assisted Suicide Embracing the Spirit For the first time in 2016 The UCC has initiated more new ministries than it has been closing annually on average. This has been through the New Ministry Grant program and especially the launch of the Embracing the Spirit initiatives which spur innovation across the entire UCC network of faith communities. This new thrust is designed not only to encourage faith communities to experiment with developing renewal ideas but also to offer assistance in the early stages of evolution to ensure that successful initiatives continue to thrive and gain momentum. Financial sustainability of these new programmes is provided by the UCC members through their M & S giving. As well, it is noteworthy that Migrant churches are by far the fastest growing in Canada, especially those affiliated with the United Methodist Church tradition; adherents hail from a variety of countries, including: Zimbabwe, Ghana, Korea, and the Philippines. The People in Partnership Program This program provides leadership to more deeply engage the members and adherents of UCC with the global mission and ministry of the church. The program s vision is that communities of faith rooted in a local context [will be] more globally engaged in working for the transformation of individual lives, communities, and institutions to reflect God s call to struggle for justice, peace, and care of creation. Property Inventory The Edge Network has been granted $ by the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation to complete a national property inventory begun in A mapping system (GIS) will be used to permit users to visually see every property across the country. A most valuable financial asset is UCC s property ownership in excess of 3000 across Canada; a failure to use this leverage can potentially and significantly reduce the church s community presence. A comprehensive review, completed in 2014, identified that approximately 30% or nearly 1000 of faith community locations will either be sold or redeveloped due to immediate financial uncertainty resulting from declining attendance rates and changing demographics. In the past, the lack of comprehensive support from UCC has led to faith communities falling victim to a number of pitfalls whose overall impact has resulted in the loss of primary assets on the scale of many millions of dollars and the loss of mission capacity. The goal is to equip local and regional bodies to be both effective and strategic in their planning and decision-making regarding the sale, redevelopment, and/or renovation of existing real estate; the latter is of strategic significance for the future of UCC. For example, sustainable

projects, such as non-profit housing, contribute toward faith building and social purpose. This CMHC grant offers a powerful confirmation that the public sector thinks the UCC is a vehicle for social transformation. Educational Centres Programs are offered concerning themes surrounding social justice, arts, music and creativity, faith and spirit, leadership development, youth and family. These multi-purpose facilities offer: space for meetings, conferences, and special events; personal and group retreats, as well as camping. Each centre shown below, has been granted $ to assist in developing new visions for their operations that will put them on the path of becoming self-sustainable. Aerial View of Five Oaks (ON) Naramata (BC) Tatamagouche (NS) The Five Oaks Centre s vision is ecumenically driven as it explores new partnerships to offer a residential centre in Canada to encourage the peaceful co-existence of religious and secular institutions to develop greater interfaith and intercultural understanding. Tatamagouche previously closed, has repurposed itself to inspire individual and collective transformation in a safe, inclusive, sacred space ; as a result, some 41 programmes are planned for the upcoming summer. After an extended labour dispute that shuttered its doors, Naramata, is scheduled to re-open, albeit on a modest scale, by offering summer/spring/fall youth, adults, and inter-generational programmes, rental accommodations, and campground space. The centre plans to have a new way of operating, utilizing primarily volunteers to maintain the Centre and manage the Centre s operations. In part re-opening this summer [will be] a test to see how much interest there is in a permanent re-opening of the Centre. After 60 years of operations, The Calling Lakes Centre (SK) envisioned the rebirth of a combined residential and retreat centre ; sadly, this idyllic 90 lakefront property, is now up for sale after the centre s doors were closed permanently in 2014 due to financial unsustainability. Developing the UCC s Viewpoint on Assisted Suicide The UCC is engaged in considering the theological implications of physician-assisted suicide. To this end, a consultation with theologians, ethicists, physicians, and people with disabilities took place in the fall of A report will be presented to the GC Executive in May A 2014 Ipsos Reid opinion poll showed that 84 per cent of Canadians believe gravely ill patients should have the right to end their lives with the help of a doctor. What is your opinion on this issue? PCPMM Workbook for Feb. 23 rd - 25 th meeting: and GC Workbook for Nov. 17 th -19 th meeting.

REMIT UPDATE Given the proposed UCC restructuring, Southeast Presbytery devoted a section of its past four bimonthly meetings to discussing and voting on the 8 remits that have been proposed. All Category 2 Remits and four of the Category 3 remits have been unanimously accepted. After discussion of Remit 6 - One Order of Ministry, voting was deferred until September 2017 s Presbytery meeting; the consensus was that more information was needed to better understand the different educational requirements and duties of the three categories of ministers - ordained, diaconal, and lay - serving the UCC. It was suggested that a presentation given by a representative of each group would be beneficial as each could offer a personal perspective on the advantages and disadvantages if this Remit were approved. PROPERTY UPDATE On January 12, 2017, an Agreement of Purchase and Sale was made between The Trustees of the former Glen Ayr United Church property and The Church of God Sabbath-Keeping (Scarborough). Subject to the removal of the underground tank in order to satisfy a condition of the sale. DONATIONS HELP HAITI REBUILD AFTER RECENT HURRICANE Guy Numa of the ICKL in Haiti. Members of The United Church of Canada responded generously to the Hurricane Matthew emergency appeal, launched last fall after powerful winds and torrential rain washed away fields, livestock, livelihoods, and homes in Haiti. More than $184,000 was donated and that money was divided among three partners: the Methodist Church in Haiti, the Institute Culturel Karl Lévêque (ICKL), an education and development agency and long-time partner; and ACT International, an ecumenical emergency and development coalition. UCC [webmaster@united-church.ca] COASTAL AREA OF PERU DEVASTATED BY FLOOD The UCC offered its deepest condolences to those affected by the recent flood (at least 94 people have died, and as many as 700,000 are now homeless. The damage is estimated at US$3.1 billion. As an ACT Alliance member, UCC is amongst those who have contributed more than US$149,000 to the Peruvian churches and agencies that are responding to the disaster. 12 IN MEMORIAM - VERA CATHARINE TRIMBLE January 26, February, 18, 2017 On February 18, 2017, Vera passed away at Lakeridge Health Centre in Whitby, Ontario, at the age of 95. She was predeceased by her loving husband George. She was a former employee of Eaton's Canada. On Thursday, March 2 nd, 2017, there was a celebration of her life. Musical accompaniment was provided by Al Evanoff, a former Knob Hill United Church (KHUC) organist. Some of Vera s much beloved hymns, such as: Amazing Grace, Great is Thy Faithfulness, as well as We ll Meet Again were included in the service of commemoration. In lieu of floral tributes, it was requested that donations in Vera s memory be made to KHUC a charity of one s choice. After the service, a reception was held in KHUC s gymnasium prior to internment at Pine Hills Cemetery. Vera regularly attended Sunday morning services; she also enjoyed participating in a variety of social activities planned by the Fellowship Club at Knob Hill UC. Our congregation wishes Vera a joyful reunion with George, the love of her life. May they both find eternal rest as promised by God, our Creator: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 13 IN LOVING MEMORY OF BERNICE REES (nee COOK) DECEMBER 22, FEBRUARY 20, 2017 Gladys Bernice Rees passed away in her 88 th year after a brief stay at the Scarborough General Hospital. She was a dear sister to Kenneth Cook (Brenda) and the late Dorothy Barlow and Audrey Blackstone. She spent her youth in the Greenwood-Gerrard St. neighbourhood. After completion of her first year of high school at Eastern School of Commerce, she decided to seek employment at Bell Canada. At Faith Baptist Church located at Broadview and Danforth Avenue now the home of the Broadview subway station - she met James Bunt, whom she later married. Together they raised four children. For many years, she became actively involved in the Home and School Association and served a term as its President. In 1978, after becoming a single parent, she returned to high school; it was a proud moment for her when both she and her youngest son received their high school diplomas at the same graduation ceremony. Her son recalls that in 1988, while refueling her car at an old York gas station, Bernice met Roger, and the rest is history as six years later, they were married; and Bernice s family grew with the addition of Roger s two adult children and their respective families. She enjoyed several years spent travelling by RV throughout North America. Her entire life was centered around family; ironically, she died on Family Day. She will be sorely missed by her husband Roger, her four children Douglas (Lynn), Edward (Trish), Sharon, Stephen (Susan), and step-children Laurie Dysart (George) of Thompson, Manitoba and Scott Rees (Dawn) of Sidney, British Columbia. Her grandchildren - Kelly, Kristy, Tara, Tammy, Allison, Christopher, Kirsten, Justin, Sara, Jessie and Rennie, as well as her 14 great- grandchildren will mourn the loss of their cherished grandmother. A chapel service was conducted By Rev. Hannah Lee at the McDougall & Brown Funeral Home; Al Evanoff, retired KHUC organist, provided musical accompaniment for the hymns chosen for the celebration of her life. After Bernice s internment at Pine Hills Cemetery, a reception was held at the funeral home. Both Bernice and Roger enjoyed social activities planned by the Fellowship Club. KHUC appreciates Bernice s past contribution as a Sunday s School teacher. May she rest in peace! Ed. Note: created from Words of Remembrance given by Douglas Bunt and Toronto Star s obituary. 14 WORLD DAY OF PRAYER MARCH 3, 2017 THEME FROM THE PHILIPPINE S: AM I BEING UNFAIR TO YOU? Christians in more than 170 countries and in 2,000 communities across Canada gathered to celebrate in solidarity with the women of The Philippines through the World Day of Prayer- a worldwide movement of Christian women of many traditions who come together on the first Friday of March each year to observe a common day of prayer. The World Day of Prayer has its roots in an ecumenical day of prayer organized by women in Canada and the United States in This celebration became the international World Day of Prayer in 1922, and Christians around the world began celebrating this event. On March 3, 2017, St. Andrews Presbyterian Church hosted the service which is held annually. There were 67 attendees from Church of the Master, St. Peter s Anglican, St David s Presbyterian, West Hill UC, and Knob Hill United. The KHUC attendees included Teresa Barry, Ruth Ledsham, Janet Hatton, Frances Ferguson, Jan Johnson, and Lorraine Hullachan. Representatives from the above-named churches presented a variety of reading selections; Jeanne and Marion, regular members of KHUC s UCW group were amongst the readers. Choral renditions were offered by choir members (including a few male voices) from the abovementioned churches. St Andrews Pastor Duncan Cameron, delivered the sermon. After the service, there was a reception which offered tasty treats. Women affirm their faith in Jesus Christ and engage with the whole world, are enriched by the faith experience of Christians of other countries and cultures, share the burdens of other people by praying with them and for them, and use their own talents in the service of God s world. Prayer and action are inseparable and both have immeasurable influence in the world. often, women have the most intimate experiences of armed conflict, violence, social injustice, and human rights violations. What might Canadians learn from [the resource material prepared by] the women of the Philippines - a country on the front lines of climate change, foreign mining and resources interests, a regional insurgency and social upheaval due to migration? How will the question, Am I Being Unfair To You? be answered. Adapted from: and Let brotherly love continue. Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them who suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body. Hebrews 13: 1 3

PRAISE BE TO GOD---THE STORY DOESN'T END HERE!! FOR HE IS RISEN!!!

A HEART-WARMING STORY OF CHRISTIAN GENEROSITY An Open Heart at the Border It has certainly been an interesting and exciting time to be in ministry; working in a border town, we are the first people that newcomers meet, and I truly hope that we are providing a God-filled welcome to the country, says Centre for Christian Studies (CCS) student Jordan Basso. The CCS is a Canadian theological school that has been training women and men for ministry since Its roots are in the deaconess training schools of the Anglican and United Churches of Canada. Jordan is in ministry at a three-point United Church pastoral charge near the Manitoba-USA border, including the town of Emerson. Students on a path toward diaconal ministry a ministry of compassion and justice-seeking grounded in the example of Jesus who did not come to be served, but to serve (Mark 10:45) appreciate CCS s values of community, diversity, creativity, and right relationships. Photo: Jimmy Emerson, DVM; Flickr (CC by NC.ND.2.0) Jordan Basso -Photo: Courtesy of CCS Since the beginning of the year, more than a hundred refugees have crossed into Manitoba seeking asylum. Fearful of how the new American administration will affect their chances at finding safe haven, they have been walking across the US/Canada border, often for hours through waist-deep snow and freezing temperatures. Jordan has been working with his congregations at figuring out ways to respond to influx of asylum seekers showing up in Emerson seeking refuge. I have learned so much about the importance of this ministry we share in the United Church, and how quickly we come together to support each other in times of need.
