Church Notes News, Events, and Notes of Interest for the week ending April 19, 2013 Church of The Apostles 170 Fairview Avenue Coventry, Rhode Island 02816

Church of The Apostles Evangelical Anglican The Truth Shall Make You Free (John 8:32) We are Christians proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ who worship in the Anglican tradition. Church of The Apostles is a member of the Conservative Congregational Christian Conference.

Day of Pentecost May 19, 2013 You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; and so you renew the face of the earth. (Psalm 104:31) Trinity Sunday May 26, 2013 Glory to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; we will praise you and highly exalt you for ever. (Song of the Three Young Men, 34) The Day of Pentecost is Membership Sunday. Baptized adults who wish to make a public affirmation of their faith through the rite of Reception for membership at Church of The Apostles are invited to speak to one of Elders.

Pentecost 2013 Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of thy faithful, and kindle in them the fire of thy love. Send forth thy Spirit, and they shall be created; And thou shalt renew the face of the earth. O God, who hast taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that by the gift of the same Spirit, we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in his consolation. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Trinity Sunday 2013 And the Catholic Faith is this: That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity, neither confounding the Persons, nor dividing the Substance. For there is one Person of the Father, another of the Son, and another of the Holy Ghost. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, is all one, the Glory equal, the Majesty co-eternal. (The Creed of Saint Athanasius)

The Deacons Corner... About The 4Cs (Conservative Congregational Christian Conference) This is the second half of an article about the 4Cs and our relationship with them. Last month s article included the Faith and Vision Statement of the 4Cs. Below is a little bit more information about the 4Cs and how/why Church of The Apostles is affiliated with them. What is the 4Cs? The CCCC is an evangelical fellowship of ministers and congregationally governed churches, committed to Biblical Christian unity. We are united by a common relationship with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, a commitment to God s Word, a love for each other, and a desire to reach people with the good news of Christ. Purpose of the 4Cs: 1. To promote the worship of God in our churches. 2. To deepen and extend the fellowship of our churches. 3. To encourage a steadfast, Biblical witness by our churches. 4. To facilitate cooperation and counsel among our churches with regard to evangelism, edification, Christian education, stewardship, missions, church extension, Christian action, women s and men s fellowships, youth activities, the pastoral ministry, and other related concerns. 5. To preserve and promote the Spiritual principles of the autonomy of the local church and the freedom of the believer in Christ. Five primary responsibilities and challenges the Lord has especially called us to in the 4Cs are these: 1. To stand together for Biblical Truth (2 Timothy 3:14; 4:1-5). 2. To agree together for Biblical Unity (John 7:20-23; Ephesians 4:3). 3. To work together for Biblical Growth (Matthew 28:16-20; Acts 1:7-8).

4. To give together for Biblical Purposes (2 Corinthians 8:1-12). 5. To pray together for Biblical Harvest (Matthew 9:37-38; Colossians 4:2-4). Why did Church of The Apostles affiliate with the 4Cs? There are major benefits (on multiple levels) to be gained by our affiliation with orthodox, like-minded Christians. Some of the benefits are summarized to the following points: 1. Accountability (beyond our own infrastructure) in teaching and preaching the pure Word of God and rightly administering the Gospel Ordinances; and in the moral conduct of leaders and people. 2. Opportunities for support and fellowship with orthodox, likeminded believers. 3. Resources in youth and mission programs; women s, men s and Pastors conferences; knowledge; ministerial resources; and Christian experience. 4. Regular encouragement from Christians beyond our own Congregation. 5. Potential financial benefits: property insurance for our buildings and grounds, health care benefits and retirement plans for our Ministers and the dedicated members of our church staff. 6. Our affiliation with the 4Cs is voluntary. Year by year we recommit and renew our promise to be a faithful member of the fellowship. We are obliged to financially support and contribute to the Conference in an amount of our own choosing. One more question I d like to briefly address that is not related to the 4Cs. Are we Congregationalist or are we Evangelical Anglicans? We at Church of The Apostles are Congregational in our governing structure. Superintendent, elders, deacons and members are interwoven as was the early church model (Acts 6:1-7). We are Evangelical Anglicans in the manner of our worship; Evangelical (proclaiming the Good News [spreading the Gospel]),

Anglican (adhering to the 39 Articles of Religion, Creeds, Book of Common Prayer). Our sign on Fairview Avenue states that we are Evangelical Anglican because the style in which we worship God is of primary interest and importance in identifying who we are to the entire world. I hope this two part article helps clarify a couple areas of our life together that can be a little confusing. If you would like additional information about these, or any other church related topic, please contact any of the elders or deacons. Your Servant in Christ, Bill Sexton First Diaconal Minister and Congregational Care Deacon Some Might Win For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings. (1 Corinthians 9:19-23). As I read this portion of Paul s letter to the Christians in Corinth during our devotional readings during Lent, I was struck by his admission that he might save some. Here is the great Saint Paul acknowledging that he will not save all to whom he preaches the gospel. If we accept this lack of perfection in Paul s efforts to save others we can decide that since we too will never reach all to whom we share the Gospel, we could easily resign ourselves to conclude that it is not worth our trying. Certainly none of us can rise to the level of Paul.

But Paul goes on to equate evangelism with an athletic event. We know everyone who enters an athletic contest does not win. Do we not admire all the contestants in an athletic event simply because they are willing to compete without being assured of the prize? They too could stand on the sidelines and say it is not worth their effort to even try. Sadly, this is what most of us do when it comes to sharing our faith with others. We need to be encouraged by Paul when he says evangelize for the sake of the gospel that he might share with others in its blessings. Jesus commands us all to preach the gospel. He does not command us to be one hundred per cent successful, just one hundred per cent committed. Tom Bourn Servant Evangelism Deacon Thoughts on Stewardship We steward our bodies as instruments of righteousness, not as instruments of wickedness (Romans 6:13), because God owns them. God requires of me that I now regard all my members, all my faculties, as belonging wholly to Him. It is a great thing when I discover I am no longer my own but His. If the ten shillings in my pocket belong to me, then I have full authority over them. But they belong to another who has committed them to me in trust, then I cannot buy what I please with them, and I dare not lose them. Real Christian life begins with knowing this. How many of us know that, because Christ is risen, we are therefore alive unto God and not unto ourselves? How many of us dare not use our time or money or talents as we would, because we realize they are the Lord s, not ours? How many of us have such a strong sense that we belong to Another that we dare not squander a shilling of our money, or an hour of our time, or any of our mental or physical powers? Watchman Nee Evangelist and Martyr ( )

National Day of Prayer The National Day of Prayer, held each year on the first Thursday in May (May 2, 2013), is an annual event for Americans of all faiths to take time to pray for our nation and its leaders. The National Day of Prayer was established in 1952 by a joint resolution of Congress as a day to call the entire nation to pray to Almighty God. The specific focus of the day is to promote the need to pray for our nation and those in positions of public trust and cultural influence. In the course of your daily routine on May 2nd, take a few moments to draw near to God and join with other believers across America to pray for those in positions of public trust, that they may serve justice, and promote the dignity and freedom of every person (The Book of Common Prayer). A Prayer for Sound Government O Lord our Governor, bless the leaders of our land, that we may be a people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to other nations of the earth. To the President and members of the Cabinet, to Governors of States, Mayors of Cities, and to all in administrative authority, grant wisdom and grace in the exercise of their duties. To Senators and Representatives, and those who make our laws in States, Cities, and Towns, give courage, wisdom, and foresight to provide for the needs of all our people, and to fulfill our obligations in the community of nations. To the Judges and officers of our Courts give understanding and integrity, that human rights may be safeguarded and justice served. And finally, teach our people to rely on your strength and to accept their responsibilities to their fellow citizens, that they may elect trustworthy leaders and make wise decisions for the wellbeing of our society; that we may serve you faithfully in our generation and honor your holy Name. Amen. (The Book of Common Prayer)

Please feel free to sit-in on our classes. You are always welcome. If you re unable to visit because you are in Adult Education, you can now view us online. (See our first edition below!) Our first class to share what they are doing is our high schoolers (Disciples). Many thanks to Nathan Stomberg and Elder Chad Tvenstrup for their summaries and Kerri McMahon for taking pictures and creating the Feeding Our Lambs newsletter which you will now find linked to the Christian Education page on our website: apostlesri.org. Coming up next month, we will focus on the Followers class (grades 1-3). Linda Jones

Outreach Notes... Crossroads Ministry We have been visiting the Crossroads Family Center for some time now and every time I go I feel the Holy Spirit working through us. During the brief time we are there a feeling of hope and faith grows. Pictures of the children and their families are taken each month. For some of them this is the first picture they have seen of themselves or their families. Others have never planted flowers before or touched soil and this simple task allows them to experience something new and see how amazing God s creation is. Kathy Kettle and Cathy Morgan have donated some wonderful children s Bible stories, and this has opened up a new way of speaking to the children about God. The children have taught me many things about what they see when they look at the books and what they interpret is the message behind the story. This ministry has opened up my eyes to see that even though it is a short period of time and communication can be difficult, God shows us how to communicate through the Holy Spirit. On May 10th, for Mother s Day, we will be painting pots with flowers as gifts. If anyone has used Bibles or children s Bible stories, we would appreciate them as a donation to Crossroads. Also, if there is anyone who speaks Spanish we would greatly appreciate help translating during our visits. Thank you to all of the volunteers who help out each month with their time, talent and willingness to spread the Word of God. If you have any questions please contact Erin Swanson at The Prayer Shawl Ministry Calling all knitters (and crocheters)! The Prayer Shawl Ministry is expanding. We need prayerful, dedicated people to knit or crochet 3x3 inch squares for Pocket Prayer Shawls.

There are many organizations that Church of The Apostles supports in their evangelism missions that could use more blessings and more prayers to help carry out their missions. These include CareNet, The Artic Mission, Galatians 6:10, Crossroads Family Center, etc. If you can knit and feel moved to use your GIFT please attend a kick-off meeting on April 24th at 6:00 p.m. If you can t attend the meeting, and are interested in helping please contact Donna Tyler at or Kathy Kettle at We look forward to people in our Congregation coming forward to use their gifts and we thank God for the opportunity to serve Him! Where? Blood Drive Church of The Apostles When? Sunday, June 2, AM to 12 Noon Note Shorter Time Period Give so more will live! Remember 1 pint of blood can help 3 people. Don t forget to have breakfast and drink plenty of fluids the morning of the Drive! We have a goal of 15 pints. In February we collected a nearly record-breaking let s meet or exceed our goal again this time! The Blood Center needs to collect up to 280 pints of blood every day to take care of our community s need! Donation time from start to finish is 45 to 60 minutes. You can help! Won t you consider giving on June 2nd? Any questions, contact Joan Clarke [ ]. Thank you!

Hands Thank you Lord for dirty hands That touch my stove and fridge; For sticky little fingers that Try to build a bridge. For careless hands that go astray In search of something new; For hands to hold and show the way As mothers often do. For precious little hands in which Great faith so abounds; For silly little hands that reach To touch a mother s frown. And thank you for your guiding hand That leads me to the light; That lifts me when I stumble And points me to the right. As little hands reach out to me To show them what to do, I m steadied, reassured and loved As I reach up to you. Judith Peitsch

Spiritual Wellness Part 1: Joy in the Journey The journey of life is spent in the pursuit of happiness. Too often, our happiness depends on our circumstances. Paul says it is possible to be content regardless of our circumstances (Philippians 4: 4-11). Even walking with the Lord, we can get overwhelmed. Too often, we find that happiness escapes us and joy is elusive. Joy is a fruit of the spirit, second only to love. It is given to us through the Holy Spirit, who is at work in our lives (Galatians 5:22-23). Joy is not the absence of suffering but the presence of the Lord. Our relationship with the Lord surpasses temporary feelings of happiness and gives us irreplaceable joy. How often do we seek joy in relationships, the accumulation of things, and other things that take priority in our lives over our relationship with the Lord? At other times, we are faced with difficulties that appear to us to be mountains, and when we try to climb, we stumble and fall. We get stuck in the valley and the river of our emotions floods us with anxiety. Habakkuk 3:17-19 tells us that even when life if difficult I will rejoice in the Lord. As you probably have figured out, we cannot make it alone. Thankfully, God pursues us. I will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). Though the dark clouds obscure my view I search and search what I shall do? It s then when touched by His Grace I can deep in my heart see His face. When I long to run and hide There He is right by my side! Then can I hear His still small voice Be Joyful Be Joyful Rejoice Rejoice! Hand in hand with other believers we can form a chain of worship, love, and understanding. This is one way that we can find the true meaning of joy and help others along the way. When faith and fellowship are prayerfully interwoven, we can find joy in the journey and then count it all joy (James 1:2). May the God of hope fill you will all joy as you trust in him, so

that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 15:13). It s His peace that gives us that outward glow Given to us freely because He loves us so. Give Him your cares each and every day. Remember His joy is only a prayer away. Love, love, let the joy shine thru, Till the inside Jesus becomes outside you. Finding joy in the journey should begin with prayer and is dependent on a relationship with the Lord. Let Him be our constant companion. Have you learned to take life one day at a time? This is the day that the Lord has made. Let us be glad and rejoice in it (Psalm 118:24). As we journey through the Faith and Fitness Program over the next six weeks, let s recognize that Jesus walks beside us and is only a prayer away. Because of that fact, we can experience the blessed assurance of His comfort, peace, and joy. Sharon Galloway, RN, MSN (Portions of this article reflect content from the CCCC s Women s Retreat, March 2013, with Liz Ecklund.) Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:4-7)

From the Superintendent: Sent Out Two by Two This year, 2013, marks the Thirtieth Anniversary of the Lay Visitation Ministry here at the Church of The Apostles. Originally the vision of Carolyne York and Rick Robinson (with help from several other saints of the former Church of St. Andrew and St. Philip), Lay Visitation has been providing invaluable service to members of our Congregation for all these years. Designed to be a friendly visit of brothers and sisters in Christ who pray with and for each other and rejoice in the amazing grace of our Triune God, Lay Visitation has blessed the lives of literally hundreds upon hundreds of people in the past three decades. The model has always been to have two people go and visit members and visitors of the Congregation, while two prayer partners stay behind and pray for the success of the visit. I am so grateful for the fine and dedicated work of all those saints who have participated in this outstanding ministry in the past and for all of you who continue to make it so strong and vital in the present, especially Barbara Battey, our current leader. Lay Visitation continues to be the example par excellence of the effectiveness of the royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9) of believers engaging fully in the work of ministry (Ephesians 4:12) in our church family. As you can see from the following list, this ministry has been blessed with outstanding leadership through the years. The dynamic duo of Debbie Ayala and Rick Bonin were co-leaders for nine years; and our beloved brother Rick Bonin was a coleader for a total of fifteen years! In fact, Rick and Mary Ann Bonin, who now serve at Deacons at Christ Evangelical Covenant Church in East Greenwich, have started a very successful Lay Visitation program at this sister church (I have a strange feeling they know what they are doing!). Praise the Lord! May the Almighty continue to bless the work of this ministry in our midst and may these efforts always bring glory to the Name

Lay Visitation From time to time I ask members of Lay Visitation to share their thoughts on this ministry. In the fall of 2012 Jim Bethel joined and made a great addition to the men and women of this ministry. His wife Cheryl has been a member of Lay Visitation for many years now, so we are very happy to see Jim join in on our visits and sometimes stay behind to be a prayer partner. Jim writes.. When I was first asked to write a piece about Lay Visitation for Church Notes my first thoughts were about using Biblical references to assist me in what to write. I soon realized that it was my personal thoughts and experience that were being asked of me. Visiting in pairs is a great way to keep the conversations flowing and I have found the visits to be well received and comfortable. Our goal in the visits is to be good listeners and to convey a message of warmth that I truly feel exists in the Church of The Apostles. There are no requests made or promises given only a hope that there is common ground and we are of similar interest in the mission of our church. Letting someone know that you care about them by a visit is better than any or phone call could possibly hope to accomplish. Like anything in life you truly receive back exactly the same that you put into it. God peace, Jim Bethel We have been blessed to have this ministry ongoing in this church for thirty years. We have been blessed with all the wonderful people who have been members of this ministry in those years and for the visits that have been made. And the visits are just one part of this ministry. Those who stay behind participate in Evening Prayer, Bible study and discussion. Meetings are once a month on the first Thursday from September to June at 6:30 p.m. We welcome you to spend some time with us at our next meeting on Thursday, May 2nd at 6:30 p.m., and we hope that if you are called for a visit that you will open your door to us to spend one hour in fellowship. Barbara Battey
