You And Your Sin The Doctrine of Anthropology & Hamartiology 64 Days of Truth Days Heritage Bible Church

64 Days of Truth is designed to help Christians understand the great doctrines of the Bible. As you spend the rest of your life feasting on the word of God (the Bible), you should forever expand and deepen your knowledge of these things. During the 64 Days, listen to the weekly messages with an open heart and an open Bible... Spend a few minutes each day to study on your own, using the devotional guides in this booklet... Spend an hour or so each week with a discussion group, talking about the importance of what you learn. Most of all, "Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen" (2 Peter 3:18). Scripture quotations are from the New American Standard Bible.

DAY 29: Wednesday Message, "You And Your Sin" If you can, take notes, and pay special attention to these key points. (When you get to your discussion group, compare notes to help each other get it all.) What do you call the belief that man is made of three parts? Two parts? Which was taught as best? List the components of the non-physical part of you: Where did sin originate? How did you come to be a sinner? Give a definition of sin, and a Scripture to support it: Define "total depravity." Memorize Genesis 1:27 and Romans 3:23-24: And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.... for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus...

DAY 30: Thursday. You're Not An Accident You're memorizing the verse that describes God creating Adam and Eve. Look at the description of His work in making you. Read Psalm 139:13-16 and answer: When did God begin His work on you? How did the Psalmist describe how he was made? How much of your life has God always known about? Read Psalm 119: What should be your response to understanding God's work in making you? Do you share the Psalmist's desire? Fill in the blanks:, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.... for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus... DAY 31: Friday. How Are You Treating Your Inner Man? In our world we spend many hours and lots of money on taking care of our bodies. We try to slow down the aging process, achieve physical goals, or just "stay well." It's OK to do that (3 John 2, 1 Timothy 4:8, 1 Corinthians 9:26-27), but it isn't the most important thing to do. Taking care of the non-physical part is more important. According to 2 Corinthians 4:16, what are the two parts of you? Which is decaying? Which is being renewed?

What is your responsibility for your part in being renewed? See Romans 12:2. Are you cooperating with God's work in your life, as described in Colossians 3:10? Fill in the blanks:, ; male and female He created them.... for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus...

DAY 32: Saturday. Checking Your Smoke Detector? We once had a smoke detector that went off in the middle of the night because we ran a cool-mist humidifier in the next room. A friend had one that shorted out in the middle of the night, started a fire in their house, and never made a sound. Both are really bad examples! You want the smoke detector to warn you when there is a real problem. Your conscience is like a built in sin detector. If it "goes off" (makes you feel guilty) when you aren't actually sinning, that's called a "weak" conscience (1 Corinthians 8:7). If your conscience fails to "go off" (make you feel guilty) when you actually sin, that's called a "seared" conscience (1 Timothy 4:2). Read 1 Timothy 1:5. What things go along with (and build up) a good conscience? What other passages can you find which mention a good conscience, and what do they say? Fill in the blanks:, ;.... for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus...

Day 33: Sunday. How Bad Is It? Something on my skin looked really bad. Fearing the worst, and sounding like a comic strip character, I asked the doctor "How bad is it?" The great news is that it was harmless and quickly gone. Not everyone gets that good news. So, think about your sinfulness. Ask "How bad is it?" in light of these verses: Jeremiah 17:9 James 2:10 Ephesians 2:1-2 Romans 3: John 1:6, 8, 10 The only "good news" about your sin is the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ. According to 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, what is the gospel? What does it do for you? Have you put your faith in the good news? Fill in the blanks:, ;...., being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus...

Day 34: Monday. Turn On Your Radar Radar detects moving objects and helps avert danger. Knowing all the nuances of sin is a big help in turning on your spiritual radar so you can avoid "blips" before they threaten you seriously. The different New Testament words for sin describe it several ways. Think of how you have done each one, and what you can do to avoid doing it again. Missing the mark Closing your ears so you disobey God Ignoring God's law Consciously crossing the line Accidentally blundering over the line Erring without knowing the extent of it Irreverence; not respecting God Doing anything unjust Failing to believe and trust God Refusing to believe what God says Got your radar on? Think honestly: Which versions of sin are you most likely to fall into? Fill in Genesis 1:27 & Romans 3:23-24:, ;....,...

Day 35: Tuesday: Review/Prepare 1. Write out the memory item for this week (as many times as you need to, until you know it by heart). 2. Tomorrow's message is "The Truth Shall Set You Free," the doctrine of salvation, or soteriology. Here are some things to look up in order to be as ready as possible. Ephesians 2:1. What is your condition, apart from Christ? Ephesians 2:4-5. How do you overcome that condition? Ephesians 2:8-9. What do you contribute to your salvation? Can you define any of these words? Look them up if you can, and watch for definitions tomorrow: Adoption Atonement Election Justification Propitiation Redemption Repentance Sanctification

DOCTRINE OF MAN AND SIN THINGS TO REMEMBER Since you are totally depraved, you have no hope apart from God's mercy and grace. Understanding how God made you, and the awfulness of your sin, is the best possible preparation for the doctrine of salvation. Your conscience needs to be kept in alignment with the Bible. Sin is much more than just outward acts of rebellion and disobedience. It begins in your heart, so the battle against sin needs to be waged within you. Dealing with thoughts, intentions and attitudes is extremely important. Genesis 1:27 and Romans 3:23-24 (memorized).

You And Your Sin 64 Days of Truth, Days 29-35: Anthropology & Hamartiology Discussion Guide 1. What characteristics make man different from animals? In other words, what does it mean that we are made in the image and likeness of God? 2. Is the image and likeness of God destroyed by our sin? On what do you base your answer? 3. Why is racism anti-god? 4. What are the three kinds of conscience mentioned in the New Testament? Find the references. How do you adjust your conscience?

5. Where did sin originate? How do we know? 6. Explain what total depravity means and what it does not mean. Review the memory Item for this week: Genesis 1:27 and Romans 3:23-24

Walk By The Spirit 64 Days of Truth, Days 22-28: Pneumatology Discussion Guide Often the Holy Spirit's ministry is ignored. The result is that many believers fail to rely on the resource they have. Read each passage and look for statements or hints about ministries of the Holy Spirit to you. He is the source of many precious things. Romans 8:26 He strengthens ("helps our weakness") and intercedes. Ephesians 4:3-4 He is our source of unity. Romans 9:1 He works with our conscience. 1 Corinthians 2:10-13, 1 John 2:20, 27 He is our teacher, the source of illumination. Romans 12:3-8, 1 Corinthians 12:11 He gives gifts. 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 He is our source of liberty. Ephesians 3:16, He is our source of strength and power. 2 Corinthians 13;14, Philippians 2:1 He is our source of fellowship. Galatians 5:22-23 He is our source of fruit. 1 Corinthians 2:4, 1 Peter 1:12 He is our source of preaching with power. Philippians 3:3, John 4:23-24 He is our channel for true worship. Romans 8:4, 13-14; Galatians 5:16, 18, 25 He is our strength and our guide for walking in this life. 2 Timothy 1:14 He is our guard of the truth.

2 Corinthians 1:22, Ephesians 1:13, 4:30 He is the seal (guarantee) of our inheritance 1 John 5:7-8 He is our source of witness concerning Christ. 2 Peter He is the source of Scripture. Memory Item for this week: Galatians 5:16 and 5:22-23: But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.... But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, selfcontrol; against such things there is no law.
