Ed Verdadero used to be a teacher in St. Agnes Academy in Legaspi and head of thee campus ministry and personnel department of St. Scholastica s Academy in Marikina. He facilitates recollections, retreats and seminars to varied groups. He does his work with passion and dynamism. He always challenges his participants and retreatants to dispose themselves in SILENCE and deep PRAYER before every session begins. He always draws his inspiration from the life and spirituality of St. Benedict. Fr. Eduardo Verdadero, ODC FACILITATOR He was ordained to thee priesthood of the Order of the Disciples of Christ last May 4, 2016 inn Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya. He is presently assigned as Formator of their seminarians in Marikina and to the Formation Ministry in thee Parish of San Raphael in Montalban, Rizal. 35 participants from San Raphael Parish in Montalban, Rizal together with Fr. Ed Verdadero, ODC plus two sisters: Sr. Leticia, OSB, a missionary from Bulgaria and Sr. Seville Cabuhat, SM, a missionary from Guam.

2 The Evangelization Seminar began in the afternoon of July 7, 2017 with this PRAYER. Then after the prayer, the participants were asked to read and reflect this QUESTIONS. PRAYER for the New Evangeliz zation EVERYONE who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. But how can they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach? AND how can people preach unless they are sent? (Romans 10:13-15) Heavenly Father, Pour forth Your Holy Spirit to inspire me with these words from Holy Scripture. Stir in my soul the desire to renew my faith and deepen my relationship with your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ that I might truly believe in and live the Good News. Open my heart to hear the Gospel and grant me the confidence to proclaim the Good News to Others. Pour out your Spirit, so thatt I might be strengthened to go forth and witness to the Gospel in my everyday life throughh my words and actions. In moments of hesitation, remind me. If not ME, then who will proclaim the Gospel? If not NOW, then when will the Gospel be proclaimed? If not the TRUTH of the Gospel, then what shall I Proclaim? GOD OUR FATHER, I pray that throughh the Holy Spirit, I might hear the call of the New Evangelization to deepen my faith, grow in confidencee to proclaim the Gospel and boldly witness to the saving grace of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen. SHARING fallowed... Faith in action seen in good works through good example. Forget your comfort zone... go out and to reach out to others Inferiority in ministry is a hindrance in evangeliza tion. BUZZ in QUESTIONS 1. WHAT IS YOUR UNDERSTANDING of : -EVANGELIZATION? - RE- EVANGELIZATION? 2. DO NOT CONFINE YOUR FAITH to a CHAPEL, to a CHURCH. EXPLAIN.

3 The two missionary Sisters were attentive ely listening to Fr. Ed s talk on Evangelization. EVANGELIZATION IS.... BRINGING the GOOD NEWS of JESUS into EVERY HUMAN SITUATION. (Paul VI )and SEEKING to CONVERT INDIVIDUALS and SOCIETY by the DIVINE POWER of the GOSPEL itself. PERMITTING / ALLOWING CHRIST to CONTINUE HIS MINISTRY of GATHERING the WORLD into HIS SAVING EMBRACE. EVANGELIZATIONN has both an INWARD and OUTWARD DIRECTION. The INWARD direction calls for our continued receiving of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, our on going CONVERSION both individually and as CHURCH. It NURTURES us, makes us GROW, and RENEWS us in HOLINESS as God s people. EVANG GELIZATION must always be DIRECTLY CONNECTED to the LORD JESUS CHRIST. there is no TRUE evangelizationn if the NAME, TEACHING, the LIFE, the PROMISES, the KINGDOM and the MYSTERY of JESUSS of NAZARETH are NOT PROCLAIMED. The OUTWARD DIRECTION addresses those people who have not heard the Gospel, or who, having heard it have stopped practicing their faith, and those WHO SEEK the FULLNESS of FAITH. Outward Direction calls us to work for FULL COMMUNION among those who CONFESS Jesus but do not yet realize the UNITY for which CHRIST prayed.

4 The morning session of July 8, 2017 started with a Bible reflection from the Gospel of Matthew and Corinthians It was followed by a sharing on what message had struck them from the two readings. Sr. Leticia shared her missionary experiencee in Bulgariaa as a Pastoral Worker. She said," life in the mission is not ea asy, has many cha hallenges like adapting to a different culture, food, language, etc. Also it has its blessings in return. Our Catholic Faith is her strong foundation and this faith should be in dialogue with other Christians especially the Orthodox and Muslims, two prevalent religions in Bulgaria. Therefore, she said, We are to value our faith and share this faith wherever we are. Her mission in Bulgariaa is both a blessing and a challenge especially in living in an international community. The Mission theree is more a journeying with the people, taking them from where they are coming, most especially understanding their experience of repression. Mission also demands foremost a good grasp of the language. DISCUSSION CONTINUED... JPII : 3 OBJECTIVES of Evangelization A. PROCLAIM the Gospel to all people. B. HELP BRING about the RECONVERSION of those who have received the GOSPEL but live it only NOMINALLY. C. DEEPEN the GOSPEL in the LIVES of BELIEVERS DIFFERENT NUANCES of EVANGELIZATION 1. For those of us who PRACTICE and LIVE our CATHOLIC faith it is a CALL to an ongoing GROWTH and RENEWED CONVERSION. 2. For those who have accepted it only in NAME, it is a CALL to RE EVANGELIZATION. 3. For those who have STOPPED PRACTICING their FAITH it is a CALL to RECONCILIATION. 4. For CHILDREN, it is a CALL to be FORMED into DISCIPLES through the FAMILY s faith and RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION/ EDUCATION. (catechists / catholic schools ) 5. For OTHER CHRISTIANS, it is an invitation to KNOW the fullness of GOD s message. 6. For those who HAVE NO FAITH, it is a CALL to CONVERSIONN to KNOW CHRIST, and experience a CHANGE to NEW LIFE with JESUS and His Church. NOTE: DO NOT BE AFRAID...and do not rely on own wisdom but on the work of the HOLY SPIRIT. EVANGELIZATION is a primary work of God. As evangelizer we need to entrust everything to the Holy Spirit who is our guide and director in our ministry of bringing the Good News of the kingdom God to all people. EVANGELIZATION happens when the WORD of Jesus speaks to people s hearts and minds. It is MEANT to be because of the POWER of the GOSPEL MESSAGE and the accompanying GRACE of GOD.

5 Fr. Ed highlighted in his talk that in evangelization everyone must always strive to be POSITIVE OR DO SOMETHING ELSE even in the midst of difficulties. YOU CAN NOT BE HOLY UNLESS YOU ARE JOYFUL. Pope Francis RADIATE JOY (JESUS, OTHERS and YOU) Some Insights from: EVANGELII GAUDIUM (Pope Francis) WITH CHRIST JOY IS CONSTANTLY BORN ANEW wish to encourage e the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of EVANGELIZATION by this joy. marked b LIFE GROWS by being given away, life WEAKENS in isolation / selfishness and comfort. -thelaw of reality is attained and matures in the measure that it is OFFERED UP in ORDER to GIVE LIFE to OTHERS. - EVANGELIZATION brings about NEW joy in the FAITH and FRUITFULLNESS to the LUKEWARM and the non- PRACTICING. The NEW EVANGELIZATION for the TRANSMISSION of the FAITH ( October Synod of Bishops ) addresses the following : 1. evangelization can happen in the area of ORDINARY PASTORAL MINISTRY 2. evangelization can happen in THOSE BAPTIZED, whose lives do not REFLECT the demands of Baptism. They lack meanngful relationship to the Churchh and no longer experience the consolationn born of faith. THERE is a great DANGER in TODAY s WORLD it is permeated by..consumerism..materialism..pursuit of FRIVOLOUS PLEASURES..BLUNTED CONSCIENCEE whenever our INTERIOR LIFE is caught in its own interests and concerns there is no longer room for others, no place for the poor. God s VOICE no longer heard. 3. evangelization can happen to THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW JESUS CHRIST, or WHO HAVE ALWAY S REJECTED Jesus. ( no to PROSELYTIZING ) there is DELIGHTFUL and COMFORTING JOY of EVANGELIZING. - GOODNESS is everywhere and always tends to SPREAD -every experience of TRUTH by its nature GROW within us, any person who has experienced a profound liberation becomes more sensitive to the needs of others.

6 SMALL GROUP DYNAMICS POINTED QUESTIONS for REFLECTION : 1. to WHOM should the church direct her evangelizing effort? To whom should she give priority and why? 2. Discuss : the ChURCH is called to be the House of the Father with doors always wide open. On the last day of the seminar, July 9, 2017, Fr. Ed offered the Holy Mass Intention for the Benedictine Sisters andd Monks in celebration of the Triduum of St. Benedict. Likewise, the participants of San Raphael Parish, Montalban, Rizal, expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the SSCS Staff andd to the Sisters especially to M. Irene for the hospitality and for the opportunity they have experienced during the weekend seminar. The CHURCH is a like a field of a hospital where the wounded and the sick are attended to and cured.. READ, LIVE and SHARE the Word of God to whom we meet, live and work with. Evangelization in the Philippines according to PCPP II BACKGROUNDER:. PCP II January 20-February 17, held at San Carlos Seminary, Makati City. 2 cardinals / 92 archbishops / bishops / 180 vicar generals and episcopal vicars. / 21 Major Superiors / 12 rectors / Presidents of Catholic Universities / 24 rectors of seminaries /156 lay faithful It takes to be humble to accept one s own shortcomings and sinfulness before a person can truly be an instrument of GOOD NEWS to others. The ESSENTIAL FEATURES of EVANGELIZATION- didn t use the term NEW evangelization but RENEWED evangelization, to bring about a. PCP II RENEWED CHURCH. PCP II inserted INTEGRAL renewed INTEGRAL evangelization; this means new approach, new features... The CONTENT of evangelization and its APPLICATION are to be taken in Philippine context.

7 CHALLENGES of TODAY s SOCIETY The CONTENT of a RENEWED EVANGELIZATION ( PCPII ) is supposed to be )) CHRIST-CENTERED )) ROOTED in the WORD of GOD )) AUTHENTICALLY FILIPINO add SYSTEMATIC )) RENEWED SOCIAL APOSTOLATE 1. ECONOMY of EXCLUSION old adage : the poor getting poorer, the rich getting richer. Inequality. So many people without work, without possibilities, without any means to improve their lot. Excessivee competition and survival of the fittest. PCP II thru the CBCP PASTORAL LETTER defines EVANGELIZATION as: // the proclamation above all of SALVATION from SIN // the LIBERATION from everything OPPRESSIVE // the DEVELOPMENT of the human person in all its dimensions personal and communitarian // the RENEWAL of SOCIETY in all its strata 2. IDOLATRY of ) MONEY ) POWER ) POSITION ) PRESTIGE Small GROUP DYNAMICS POINTED Qs A. will the message of the Gospel ever grow old? Why NOT? B. What challenges are the Philippine Church / San Rafael Parish experiencing today? C. What challenges do pastoral workers face in our society today. 3. CULTURAL CHANGES - attacks on religious freedom - new persecutions directedd against Christians - indifference, relativism - elite globalization - OVER EXPOSURE to media - SECULARIZATION 4. SELFISHNESS and SPIRITUAL SLOTH -ABSENCE of volunteerism. i.e trained catechists willing to PERSEVERE. // PRIESTS obsessed with protecting THEIR FREEE time. -pastoral ACEDIA /boredom / apathy 5. PESSIMISM / defeatism / prophets of doom 6. spiritual WORDLINESS SEEKING NOT God s glory but human glory and personal well- being. Only APPEARANCES.
