The New Evangelization Synod of Bishops 2012
Recent happenings Synod of Bishops in Rome October 2012 Title of synod: "New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith" Gathering bishops and laity from around the world - delegates from various countries
Recent happenings Gather to discuss the New Evangelization Global perspective - to see common themes and common needs To have a unified approach to address this serious call
Structure of the Synod Publish the reading document Lineamenta - prior to attending - all would read it and study it All diocese s were to submit a report Bishop delegates chosen by countries to attend Lay delegates appointed by Vatican Dr. Ralph Martin - S.H.M.S.
Structure of the Synod Gathering in Rome - members of the synod gave interventions (short presentations - 5 min) on particular aspects of the document - interventions Ideas shared Eventually Pope Benedict will write a document concerning the new evangelization.
New Evangelization - Origins Pope John Paul II A term coined in his address in Haiti March 9, Evangelization cannot be new in its content since its very theme is always the one gospel given in Jesus Christ. Rather its proclamation needs to be new in its ardour, methods and expression.
Why the NE? John Paul identified that in countries and lands that once were Christian, founded on Christian principles with a Christian culture are no longer Christian.
Why the NE? whole countries and nations where religion and the Christian life were formerly flourishing and capable of fostering a viable and working community of faith, are now put to a hard test and in some cases, are even undergoing a radical transformation as a result of a constant spreading of indifference to religion, of secularism, and atheism Without a doubt a mending of the Christian fabric of society is urgently needed in all parts of the world. CL 34
Difference Evangelization - definitions 1st Evangelization - proclamation of the Good News to those who have never heard it before New Evangelization - a type of re-evangelization applied to those who have heard the Good News but for some reason it has grown cold in their lives
Central Mission of the Church Paul VI Evangeli Nuntiandi 14. We wish to confirm once more that the task of evangelizing all people constitutes the essential mission of the Church.
Central Mission of the Matthew 28:18-20 Church All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
3 Characteristics Ardour Methods Expression
3 Characteristics Ardour: I sense that the moment has come to commit all of the Church s energies to a new evangelization and to the mission ad gentes. No believer in Christ, no institution of the Church, can avoid this supreme duty: to proclaim Christ to all peoples. Redemptoris Missio #3
3 Characteristics Methods: Utilizing the new technologies, new ways of communication, globalization of the world, creativity in proclaiming the message, etc.
3 Characteristics Expression: the NE is not simply a program - which will run it s course, but it is a lifestyle or and optic - through which we see all activities
What does this New Evangelization mean to me? The CWL has an active part in the New Evangelization! We cannot afford to simply think of ourselves and our own needs! New Evangelization is not for the specialists - but is for the WHOLE Church!
What does this New Evangelization mean to me? Q: How can the CWL be part of the New Evangelization? Suggestions: To welcome new ideas and new outreach initiatives To be actively involved in the community To be welcoming!
What does this New Evangelization mean to me? Searching for new ARDOUR, new METHODS and new EXPRESSIONS to invite people into a living relationship with the Lord Jesus through the life of the Church!
Questions??? Questions regarding the New Evangelization...
Thank YOU! Thank you for your love for the Lord Jesus and your faith and service to the Church and community over the years! Blessing!
