1 COMPENDIUM OF CERTIFICATION TOPICS Required Course Descriptions, Goals & Objectives, Criteria for Determining Competency, Opportunities for Fulfilling Course Requirements and Resources for Further Study INTERMEDIATE & FULL CERTIFICATIONS The twenty topics of Intermediate Certification build upon the topics covered under Basic Certification and provide an introduction to the core doctrines of our faith and methodology needed to become an effective catechist, youth minister or religion teacher. Under the 2010 revision to the Albany Diocese s Certification Requirements 14 of the topics are common to all five certification tracks (Catechist, Youth Minster, Catechist for Adults, Intergenerational Catechist and Catholic School religion teacher) and the remaining six topics are track specific. Having completed the eight topics for basic certification, these catechists/youth ministers/religion teachers are now expected to continue their ongoing formation by completing, on average, four intermediate topics a year. Upon completion of any four intermediate topics they are eligible to advance one level of Intermediate Certification. Upon the completion of all twenty intermediate topics (hopefully within seven years of starting out in catechetical ministry), not only do they qualify for Level V Intermediate Certification but for Full Certification as well. Full Certification is good for three years and is renewable by completing twelve advanced level courses (or their equivalent) over a three year period. If a person changes certification tracks (for example switches from catechist to youth minister ) the intermediate certification courses that they took for their initial certification that are common to both tracks may be applied towards their certification in this other track. For persons who qualified for Basic Certification under the earlier certification requirements, the four theology/scripture topics that are now part of Basic Certification, while not affecting their basic certification status, must be completed in order for them to qualify for either Full or Advanced Certification issued after September 1, Consequently, they will need to have completed the original four basic topics for their track, the four theology/scripture topics that are now part of basic certification (but which prior to Fall, 2010 were intermediate certification topics), and the twenty intermediate topics for their track listed below. 5 Topic B01 A CHRISTIAN VISION OF HUMAN SEXUALITY Intermediate Certification topic required for Full Certification of Catechist of Children, Youth Minister, Catechist of Adults, Intergenerational Catechist and Catholic School religion teacher tracks. Description This course introduces participants to the Christian understanding and vision of sexuality. Catechists, youth ministers and Catholic school religion teachers will consider resources and principles for presenting a vision of sexuality that is responsible, positive and life-giving. This topic was, and continues to be, an intermediate certification topic applicable to all certification tracks/specialties in the Diocese. Prior to the 2010 revision there had been a methodology topic, Using the Christian Sexuality Curriculum required for catechists (of children) to qualify for Advanced Certification. It was rarely offered. In addition to providing an introduction to the topic, this intermediate certification course is also to include a methodological component practical ideas/suggestions on how this material can be taught/shared with the catechist s/youth minister s/teacher s audience. Some presentations on this topic in recent years have featured aspects of the Theology of the Body. Objectives Faith Dimension To appreciate one's own sexuality as a mystery and as a gift. To gain insight into the faith vision that shapes our teaching and law. Knowledge/Understanding To understand the holistic and Scriptural vision of sexuality. To understand the Scriptural notion of being created in the image and likeness of God. To understand the relational, integrative, and life giving aspects of this vision. Application To consider initial steps for integrating the above insights into one's own catechetical ministry. To become familiar with the design and basic content of the Diocesan Human Sexuality curriculum. Criteria for determining competency The catechist/youth minister/catholic school religion teacher demonstrates an understanding of the Christian vision of sexuality through the following: awareness of one's own sexuality as a mystery and a gift. appreciation of sexuality as relational, integrative, and life giving. knowledge of the Scriptural foundations of the Christian vision of sexuality. ability to communicate this vision to the age group being catechized Fulfilling this Course/Topic Requirement Completion of a standalone two hour presentation falling under the topic of A Christian Vision of Human Sexuality (at parish/school, cluster/deanery program, diocesan forum such as Spring Enrichment, etc.). 7 Topic B02 CHURCH Intermediate Certification topic required for Full Certification of Catechist of Children, Youth Minister, Catechist of Adults, Intergenerational Catechist and Catholic School religion teacher tracks. Description This course offers catechists, youth ministers and Catholic school teachers an introductory theology of Church, with an emphasis on the ecclesiology of Vatican II. This topic was, and continues to be, an intermediate certification topic applicable to all certification tracks/specialties in the Diocese. In addition to providing an introduction to the topic, this intermediate certification course is also to include a methodological component practical ideas/suggestions on how this material can be taught/shared with the catechist s/youth minister s/teacher s audience. In our advanced theology/scripture offerings this topic encompasses theology of Church, Vatican II and Church history (Topic C04 Ecclesiology ). Objectives Faith Dimension To gain a personal sense of the communal aspect of faith. Understanding/Knowledge To understand the development of Church from its foundation to the present. To understand the vision of Church as articulated in the documents of the Second Vatican Council. To explore the many models of Church and how this diversity leads to unity. Application To demonstrate how our approach to catechesis reflects our theology of Church. To explore catechetical methods of teaching Church. Criteria for determining competency The catechist/youth minister/catholic school religion teacher demonstrates an understanding of Church through the following: ability to articulate a renewed understanding of Church from a post Vatican II perspective. knowledge of the many models of Church and how this diversity leads to unity. ability to articulate a renewed theology of Church in catechesis. ability to select and use appropriate catechetical techniques that enable different age groups to grow in the knowledge and love of the Church. Fulfilling this Course/Topic Requirement Completion of a standalone two hour introductory presentation falling under the topic of Church (at parish/school, cluster/deanery program, diocesan forum such as Spring Enrichment, etc.). 9 Topic B03 ECUMENISM Intermediate Certification topic required for Full Certification of Catechist of Children, Youth Minister, Catechist of Adults, Intergenerational Catechist and Catholic School religion teacher tracks. Description This course will provide catechists, youth ministers and Catholic school religion teachers with a basic understanding of current trends in the ecumenical and interfaith movement and their relationship to faith formation. This topic was, and continues to be, an intermediate certification topic applicable to all certification tracks/specialties in the Diocese. In addition to providing an introduction to the topic, this intermediate certification course is also to include a methodological component practical ideas/suggestions on how this material can be taught/shared with the catechist s/youth minister s/teacher s audience. Objectives Faith Dimension To gain a personal appreciation for the beliefs we share with other Christians and other faith communities as well as the issues that still divide us. Knowledge/Understanding To gain a working knowledge of important aspects of ecumenical/inter-faith relationships. To explore some basic issues of agreement and continuing dialogue in ecumenical/interfaith relationships. Application To explore concrete ways the ecumenical/interfaith dimension can be included in faith formation settings. Criteria for determining competency The catechist/youth minister/catholic school religion teacher demonstrates an understanding of ecumenism and interfaith relationships through the following: an understanding of what we share in common with other Christians and other faith communities. an understanding of the issues that divide us. a knowledge of ways that ecumenical and interfaith dimensions can be included faith foramtion experiences. 11 Topic B04 FAITH DEVELOPMENT Intermediate Certification topic required for Full Certification of Catechist of Children, Youth Minister, Catechist of Adults, Intergenerational Catechist and Catholic School religion teacher tracks. Description This course offers an understanding of faith development as a lifelong process with different agendas for every age. It will help the catechist, youth minister or Catholic school religion teacher to work more effectively toward the faith growth of their audience. This topic was, and continues to be, an intermediate certification topic applicable to all certification tracks/specialties in the Diocese. While most intermediate certification topics are expected to include a methodological component, this topic is more informational for the catechist/youth minister/teacher. Objectives Faith Dimension To reflect upon one's unique journey of faith. To recognize life influences on the faith development of the catechist. Knowledge/Understanding To understand the nature of faith as gift. To be acquainted with current theories of faith development. To understand the general and proximate influences on the faith development of the age group the catechist works with. Application To become acquainted with effective catechetical techniques to enhance the faith development of the age group the catechist works with. Criteria for determining competency The catechist/youth minister/catholic school religion teacher demonstrates an understanding of the relationship between the life process, faith development, and catechesis through the following: knowledge of the life-long process of faith development that includes times of doubt. knowledge of the current theories of faith development. ability to recognize various levels of faith development. ability to select appropriate catechetical techniques and teaching strategies to the age group. 13 Topic B05 IMAGES OF GOD Intermediate Certification topic required for Full Certification of Catechist of Children, Youth Minister, Catechist of Adults, Intergenerational Catechist and Catholic School religion teacher tracks. Description What do Christians mean when they say God? This course will attempt to answer this question as it explores how our understanding of God shapes our sharing of the Christian message. This topic was, and continues to be, an intermediate certification topic applicable to all certification tracks/specialties in the Diocese. Under the 1998 requirements for Catholic school teachers it was treated as a basic certification topic. In addition to providing an introduction to the topic, this intermediate certification course is also to include a methodological component practical ideas/suggestions on how this material can be taught/shared with the catechist s/youth minister s/teacher s audience. While typically treating the topic of God generally, there have been occasions when presentations for this topic have delved into the notion of the Triune God revealed by Christ. Objectives Faith Dimension To discover various images of God at work in one's life. To discern how these images may help or hinder our spiritual growth. Knowledge/Understanding To understand that knowledge of God comes through the language of religious experience, analogy and metaphor. To explore biblical, traditional and contemporary ways that we name God. Application To discover strategies for naming experiences of God appropriate to various age levels. 15 Topic B06 Introduction to MORALITY Intermediate Certification topic required for Full Certification of Catechist of Children, Youth Minister, Catechist of Adults, Intergenerational Catechist and Catholic School religion teacher tracks. Description This course will examine the essence of Catholic morality and see that our human nature provides its basis. While recognizing that a relationship with Jesus is the center of Catholic moral life and that Catholic morality is a journey of conversion, it will consider some fundamental principles including the Ten Commandments and Beatitudes as guides for living or covenant relationship with God and will explore catechetical approaches for presenting Catholic morality to others. This topic was, and continues to be, an intermediate certification topic applicable to all certification tracks/specialties in the Diocese. In addition to providing an introduction to the topic, this intermediate certification course is also to include a methodological component practical ideas/suggestions on how this material can be taught/shared with the catechist s/youth minister s/teacher s audience. Objectives Faith Dimension To recognize that a relationship with Jesus is the center of Catholic moral life. To appreciate that love is the foundation of all moral teaching. Knowledge/Understanding To understand Catholic morality as an ongoing journey of conversion. To understand the theories of moral development. To examine the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes as guides for living our covenant relationship with God. Application To explore catechetical approaches for presenting Catholic morality. To explore ways the catechist, youth minister or Catholic school religion teacher can impact the moral formation of their audience. Criteria for determining competency The catechist/youth minister/catholic school religion teacher demonstrates an understanding of the relational nature of Christian morality through the following: ability to identify the Christian moral tradition in terms of our relationship to God, ourselves, and others. knowledge of the Biblical basis for morality including situating the commandments and the Beatitudes within the Gospel mandate to love. knowledge of conversion as a life-long process lived out in everyday life experiences. knowledge of the stages of moral development and how this relates to catechesis. ability to select and use appropriate catechetical techniques for teaching Christian morality with the age group they are working with. This course will explore the principal feasts and seasons of the Liturgical Year, including Sundays, and will highlight ways to signify the theological movements throughout the seasons of the Church year.
