The Serbian Orthodox Church to her spiritual children at Christmas, PAVLE By the Grace of God Orthodox Archbishop of Pec, Metropolitan of Belgrade Karlovci and Serbian Patriarch, with all the Hierarchs of the Serbian Orthodox Church to all the clergy, monastics, and all the sons and daughters of our Holy Church: grace, mercy and peace from God the Father, and our Lord Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, with the joyous Christmas greeting: Peace from God! Christ is Born! Great indeed is the mystery of our religion: God is manifested in the flesh, vindicated in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory. (I Tim. 3:16) These words of the Apostle Paul, our dear spiritual children, most fully depict all the beauty of the joy of Christmas in which we truly participate in the great mystery of God descending from Heaven to

earth and man s ascending from earth to Heaven and sitting at the right hand of God the Father. This, in essence, is the divine sonship of everyone who desires it through an active faith. The Son of God came to call us into the everlasting Kingdom of God and to bring us into the reality of eternal life, being that He, our Lord, is always the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:5). The event of Christ s birth from the Virgin Mary brings together all hopes and longings of mankind throughout the centuries preceding it, as well as the faith of all the centuries that followed it, and it will last throughout all the centuries to eternity. This is the fullness of time (Gal. 4:4), for God and man are united together in the person of Christ. God is born as a man without ceasing to be God, so that man can become god by grace, without ceasing to be man. Rejoicing in eternal and indescribable joy because of the great gifts of God s love, let us ask ourselves as believing Christians, called out and sent into the world to be the salt and light of the earth (Matthew 5:13-14), are we, and to what degree are we, truly responsible in our God-given freedom. It is not good to make excuses for ourselves to someone else and yet see his mistakes, for condemning is not the way of faith. Often times this is an obstacle on the road of life and too heavy a yoke for him who acts this way. This is why we turn to you, sons and daughters of Christ s Church, not as lords over your faith, but as helpers of your joy (II Cor. 1:24). On bended knees we implore you: show love without hypocrisy toward one another and toward all people let us not grow weary in well-doing. (Gal. 6:9) Let us work to carry out the lesson of our Holy Fathers: Every Christian needs to be such a person that God is never ashamed of him. We can fulfill this axiom, noble people of God, but only if we make some effort will we succeed in the good works of our noble faith. There are many selfish people today who think that they can do everything alone. Many are the false great people and nations and, each thinks that he alone can change the world. That is why we need the faith of the righteous Joseph, the simplicity and hospitality of Bethlehem s shepherds, and the wisdom of the Magi from the East who, guided by the star, brought gifts to Christ without fearing King Herod. Let us believe with the faith of the prophets and righteous 5

from the Old Testament, and let us persevere together with the holy apostles in witnessing to the great Mystery of faith, knowing that besides Christ there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved. (Acts 4:12) This knowledge in faith does not hinder us in love toward others. On the contrary, it directs us forward and opens us up to every person, regardless of who he is, how he prays, or whether he prays. For God shows no partiality, but in every nation any one who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. (Act. 10:35) Our faith that Christ is the Savior of the world and mankind, equips and enables us to always serve the improvement and salvation of the world. The Son of God, for us and our salvation, became man and our servant. So each one of us is called to serve for the betterment of life and for the salvation of all and everyone. How much better and different everything would be if we Christians would actively understand the meaning of the great ones serving the little ones! Life would be more beautiful and the world would be much better. It is possible but only if each one conquers self-will, renounces his own selfishness, abandons personal self-interest, and exchanges it for a self-sacrificing and unselfish way of life. We were committing lawless acts let us stop, and God will forgive. The greatest error we commit is abortion, because we will not admit that it is the sin of murdering a child, motivated by the selfishness of unworthy parents. It is most hideous murder, the refusal of God s blessing and the denial to a new person of the right to life. The unborn child is not a nameless embryo, a fetus; it is a person a living soul. We implore you, dear parents, not to do this any more; do not close the door of your hearts and homes to the blessing of life. There is enough room and food for all. Remember those childless parents who with tears in their eyes beseech God to bless them with children! Do not let the lack of material possessions be an excuse for abortion. Do not cut yourselves off from God s blessing! We know that some self-proclaimed defenders of people s rights will say that the Church is limiting freedom and the rights of people, but let it be known that we are counseling with love, without degrading. May God forgive their sin and may He bring them into the communion of love. We will rejoice if they favorably respond. 6

Many nations give heed to their historical existence and eternal salvation, and our Serbian people have killed, regretfully, more unborn children than all our enemies in all wars put together. We would mention that in our homeland the annual number of deaths, more than twenty five thousand, is greater than the number of new births. It is hoped that this statistic will move many to a more responsible way of thinking and to better actions. In doing good works, in forgiving and in prayer, we need to persist and endure to the end, for when reviled, we bless; when persecuted, we endure; when slandered, we try to conciliate (I Cor. 4:12-13), knowing that the victory that overcomes the world (is) our faith. (I John 5:4) Orthodox Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija experience and know this very well, along with all those who have been left homeless, driven by persecution from their homesteads. They bear the wounds of Christ on their bodies and are victorious over their persecutors. Many, because of their self-absorption and fear, do not understand them. They, like the early Christian martyrs and confessors, are victorious over those who think that they can reach their goal by defeating others. We deeply believe that the time will come when the aggressors will be put to shame. We pray for our enemies, that they may see that doing evil cannot bring good results to anyone. May it be known to them that after all debacles which 7

they are inflicting upon others, in the end, they themselves will be defeated with hopelessness. And for them we pray that they may overcome self in order to become partakers of the peace which Christ gives. Dear spiritual children, our holy Serbian Orthodox Church has survived all historical Golgothas and crucifixions by the joy of Bethlehem s shepherds and by the wisdom of the Magi from East, and it will continue to survive forever, in conciliar unity with all the local Orthodox Churches which together comprise One Holy Church. In her fullness (sabornost) she gathers the entire Serbian population, on all continents and in all countries, and is open to all people of good will. She has gathered her faithful children throughout the centuries, walking the narrow path and building bridges of peace and love among people and nations. We know well our downfalls, schisms and divisions. We pray to God that they cease, forever asking all of you to be one in our Lord, so that we may show others the pure faith and holy unity, all the beauty of faith in God and faith in the man of God. It will happen when we stop creating divisions among ourselves, mostly for foolish reasons. Let us strive, in the joy of the Christmas celebration, to reconcile ourselves and let us gather around the crib of the Divine Infant, overcoming all our senseless divisions! Of course, it is necessary to think through everything, to encounter different opinions and to discuss things, but this cannot be a reason for hatred either among ourselves or towards anyone. The rule must remain in force which states: he who would be first, should be servant to all. Christ with His life showed all this, and we Christians have a sacred duty to affirm this life of service. Today is the most appropriate day to reexamine and correct ourselves and others so that our joy can be complete and lasting. Every one of us needs to see in every other person the image of God, the image of our brother and of our eternal friend. Then will our hearts truly be Bethlehem s cave in which Christ is continually being born anew. And the more hearts there are like this, the better everything will be and the better we will all be. PEACE FROM GOD CHRIST IS BORN! 8

Parish Priest Fr. Ljubisa Brnjos ANNUAL REPORT 2006 During 2006, 87 Divine Liturgies were served and about 50 Vespers worship services were held at the Serbian Orthodox Church in Orlando. Several vigils were also held on the eve of important holidays and the Church s Slava [Patron Saint s Day]. His Grace Mitrofan, Bishop of Eastern America, was our guest on just one occasion this year, in contrast with last year, when he came three times (this year he served Liturgy only on Saints Joachim and Ana s Day, 22nd September). Other than His Grace, Priests who served liturgies with us and other guests were: Very Reverend Stefan Zaremba, Very Reverend Milan Stojanovic, Reverend Stanislav Kravljaca, Reverend Milorad Orlic, as well as our brothers in Orlando, Father Peter Milanovic from the American Orthodox Church, Father Konstantin Tersopulos from the Greek Orthodox Church and Father Sergei Kozin from the Russian Orthodox Church. At the Sunday worship services, attendance was always around 50 to 60 people, as it was the previous year, so we have nothing to congratulate ourselves on, other than that attendance at the worship services did not decrease. Attendance at important holidays was many times this, especially on Christmas Eve, Easter Morning and the Church Slava of Saint Petka. For the Saint Petka Slava I can say that it was perhaps the most beautiful and most festive, since practically the whole parish got together. At Orthodox New Year s, a prayer service was held for the upcoming year of the Lord and a formal dinner was served for the occasion. Lord willing, this year too we will organize something similar, since New Year s Eve falls on a Saturday and therefore many more people can take part. Over the year, ten adults and children were baptized, and several weddings took place. A few of those afflicted by illness took Communion, and unfortunately two funerals also took place. Our parish suffered an especially great loss in March, with the death of our teta Dara Trbovic, one of the original founders of this church and this community, as well as the greatest donor to this church from the very first gatherings. A large number of our parish members celebrated their Slavas and invited the priest to break the Slava bread with them, while there remains a part of our community that either does not celebrate a Slava or does not invite the priest. A couple of families celebrated their Slava for the first time last year. Praise the Lord that we have them too, who are slowly coming to the Lord s Church. How- 9

ever, the thing I would like to stress and repeat for the umpteenth time is that what is most important and most necessary to an Orthodox Christian is actually coming to the Lord s Church. Without the Lord s Church and without a foundation in the Church there is no true faith, nor can anyone call themselves Orthodox. The other day I received a letter from some such let us say Serbian who was trying to explain to me how the Church was not necessary for someone to believe, and that icons were not necessary, and that we should not be venerating icons because they are mere images and idols. All of this leaves many of you indifferent and you do not know much about this, but you should know that those who are fighting against Christ know their job very well. We have a great problem in that we know nothing about our faith and Orthodoxy. All that we do know about our faith is the Slava and baptizing our children in the church and getting married there. Whoever is married in the Church and baptizes his children in it is seen as a great believer. People, those days are over. What kind of a wedding or baptism or Slava is it that is just an opportunity for people to get drunk and revel, while at the same time not remembering a single word of the formal ceremony in the Church? What kind of a Slava is it when it is celebrated in the middle of a fasting period or on a Wednesday or Friday, which the Church has designated as fasting days, and roast pork and lamb is being prepared. The excuse for all this is that it has always been this way. Well, dear brothers and sisters, it was not always so. It began when Serbs began to separate from the Lord s Church and when they began to make up the rules, laws and customs themselves. I try to bring the little that I know and have learned from my training across. I say to you and warn you that it is better to not celebrate a Slava than to celebrate it inappropriately. I have warned you about this many times already. The ways of the Lord are miraculous. The Lord will indeed find a way to let you know you have done wrong, but beware that this does not come too late. The Lord gives everyone a warning and all of you know this, but we all fool ourselves and run from this, because we lack faith. If we had faith as small as a seed, we would not be blaming someone else for everything that happened to us, nor be finding fault in another, but in ourselves. All this that I say to you, I speak from my own personal experience, for I observed it and therefore witness to you. As far as the administrative side of the work is concerned, the church board has been fairly successful. As always, not everything was perfect, but the important thing was that the board members also attended worship services, which is the point of the church, because the Liturgy and worship services should be the center of Christian life. Those who represent 10

the Church and who are members of the Church board should be the most regular and active at the Divine worship services. This is the main reason I am here and the one this community should be gathering for on this property. We need to have as many Church-related activities as possible, not just any kind of activity designed only to increase our numbers. This property is the Lord s Church, therefore we should be getting together on it in the Name of the Lord and to the glory of His Church. Will someone ever say: Father, we would like to learn about our faith a little, could you talk for a bit with us about what it is that we believe in and why we call ourselves Orthodox Serbs? Will someone ever say that it might be a good idea for us to do something to introduce ourselves to others? To show them who we are, what we are and where we are from, so that even those who do not love us will begin to respect us. Will someone ever ask when a child or god-child is to be baptized what is actually done at the ceremony and what the baptism means, or when a couple is married, will someone come to ask what marriage is and what changes in their lives when they enter into marital union. Probably nothing at all, because people are not even interested in this. Many live as if they are already married, prior to getting married. It is simply false that the bride may be brought home prior to the marriage, with all that goes along with that, so that the marriage itself and the wedding ceremony do not mean anything other than yet another drinking party in the series. When preparations are being made for a weeding or baptism, all that is asked of the priest is the price of the hall rental, if necessary, and what needs to be brought. Nobody asks what it all represents. Certain 11

individuals think of the church only when there is a party of some kind. Many would say better then than never, but this is not the case. I believe it is better for them not to think of her even then. One comes to church because of Christ, the Holy Trinity, because of Saint Petka, for the health and salvation of one s soul and one s children and all one s relatives, since this is what we believe in. Concerning the new church Board, my wish is that those who make up the Board are familiar with both the Serbian and English languages, because we need people such as these. Lord willing, the period of church construction and permitting with the County will be underway, and we should do all we can. This year the mission parish of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Jacksonville got its priest, Father Stanislav Kravljaca, so I will, Lord willing, devote myself for the first time to my own parish for the Christmas holidays, so that for Christmas Eve the service will begin some time after six, and after that we will have a fasting supper in the hall. The Christmas Day worship service will begin somewhat earlier than usual, but again not too early, because people like to visit and wish each other a merry Christmas before dawn. Following this, everyone can come to Church, to pray to the Lord and receive blessings. Do not exclude the most important event from your Christmas schedule, which is the Divine Liturgy. In the coming year, as far as the organization of church life goes, we will have, Lord willing, even more events, and I hope that people will come to the Divine Liturgy and worship services more often. As far as other activities goes, we have before us the preparatory work for the construction of the new church. This is a great task, but holds great rewards. This year we did not have a fundraising dinner like last year. The reason was that we believed that we needed to be doing something and that the money that we raised in November of last year should first be spent on all the permits and construction work, and then we would get together once more and see what the next steps should be. Other activities under the wings of the church are the folklore group and Sunday school for faith and language teaching. The folklore group performed several times this year. Here too, as in other areas, there are always misunderstandings and minor problems, but I believe that folklore has contributed very much indeed to this community over this period and I would like to thank all those who participated in this. 12

The children from the Serbian Sunday School have already learned some things. There are ten to fifteen of them at the school, but we still have the problem of the remaining children in Orlando, of whom there are over one hundred, and parents who do not bring their children to school, and with that neither to church. Last year I announced that I would initiate another couple of activities. One of these was the setting up of Orthodox discussions, with a view to talking about issues of our faith. I said that every last Saturday in the month would be an opportunity to hold these, but the entire year has passed and not a single discussion meeting was held on this topic. I do not know whether the problem was in the time chosen, or with me, or with something else, but I believe that something should be done. If you have any suggestions, please let me know after I deliver this report. In addition, after Easter we tried to organize a choir. Practices were scheduled on Sundays before the Divine Liturgy, but it appears that nobody was interested. I believe that this is the greatest problem of our church, this lack of interest among people, just as if somebody else would be doing everything. The [candle] workshop that we started up last year has already produced 13

good results but I will not right now go over specifics about this work. If anyone is interested in this, please come and see me after the meeting, and I will give you the full details tied to the work of the workshop. I do wish to simply to say that thanks to the workshop, our church had an income of over 9,000 dollars. On this beautiful property there are many more possibilities to get organized and to initiate many more activities. Last year we wanted to re-establish the fine Friday evening tradition of a fish fry and selling of other Serbian specialties. However, to date this has not yet been put into action. Here too the issue is the lack of interested persons to work on this. Praise the Lord, this year the work of the Circle of Serbian Sisters has started up again too. I think they did a great job during the Serbian Festival and deserve the greatest praise for all they prepared and served. Otherwise, as far as the Serbian Festival is concerned, I was not entirely convinced last year about pulling it off. I thought we had not yet matured enough for such an event. On the insistence of our President, Jovan Dragosavac, and especially our Vice President, Nenad Kovacevic, the Festival was put in motion, and I can say that I was delighted with its organization. There were slip-ups, I know that there were quite a few mistakes made in some aspects, but considering that this was our first Festival, everything was excellent. The most important thing is for the Festival to be held and that we slowly establish our name and reputation. As early as during the next 14

few months, when our new board has taken root, we need to address the subject of the Festival and its organization. This is a large mouthful indeed to chew on and we will need a lot of people and equipment for its organization. However, just as the Greeks told us: We have been organizing our festival for forty years and something always goes wrong, but every year more and more people come, and they make in three days exactly what we do in three years. There you have it. I have tried to submit a report to you about my work and the activities of this Church Board, according to my ability. If I have omitted something, please let me know. Also, if you have any questions, feel free to ask... If there is nothing further to add, I will call on Mr. Jovan Dragosavac to give his report. Translated from the Serbian by Jovan Dragosavac 15

Jovan Dragosavac DO WE REALLY NEED A NEW CHURCH? Before I begin to answer this important question for our parish community, I would like firstly to say how touched I was at the December Assembly meeting when you asked me to serve a third term as president of the board. In fact, I had been preparing arguments to defend my decision prior to the meeting to not stand again for reelection. Yet when I saw the warmth of your request, even urging, I was left feeling that if I did not stand, I would just be running away from our Church, and we all know that anyone fleeing from God will not get far! Now, together with our enthusiastic new board, we look forward to an exciting year for our Church, building on the work of the previous board. You may have noticed that a company (Ardaman and Associates) has made four borings on our property to establish the suitability of the soil for our planned new building, and we expect to have their report in our hands in mid-january. Please keep in mind that our meetings are always open and ALL parishioners are most welcome to attend and let their thoughts be known. Now back to the original question. At some point in 2006 I managed to finish reading a book (quite an achievement with five young children!) called Dancing Alone about one man s journey from the Protestant to the Orthodox Church, a book which I can strongly recommend to anyone who is not quite sure about the history of the Church. The author, Frank Schaeffer mentions towards the end that it is our duty as Christians to give to the poor, which we all know already. What struck me, however, is that he then gave the reason we had to do this. It was so that the poor could spend less time thinking about how to fill their stomach and be free to devote themselves better to serving God - not so that they could live a more comfortable or prosperous life. It is naturally possible to be both hungry and to worship God, but much more difficult. A parallel can be found in the military. I recall a young student at Seminole Community College once telling me that her brother joined the US Army and one of the things they did was to repair all his bad teeth. They also made sure 16

that his rucksack of equipment was full of extra pairs of clean, dry socks. The army knows that a soldier with toothache or wet, cold feet will probably not be a good fighter because he will be distracted from his main focus the battle. Some of you may remember in the very early days that we did not even have a property, but accepted the kind offer of a local Episcopal Church to use their premises for Sunday Liturgy, back when Father Nikodim was with us. The faithful at that time still met to worship, yet they also yearned for a property of their own, a dream that was achieved over several years. Now we have the property, a most fine one, but still we do not feel that we have a proper church. We still worship, but also have a strong need to fully express our devotion to God by building a more traditional Church building to His glory. To compare to our earlier example of the poor, we are still hungry. The building of a new church can easily be misunderstood, or done out of the wrong motives. For example, the church would not be a monument to Serbdom or a mere cultural edifice. Nor would it be there to show wealth or national pride. It is for the worship of God by our Serbian Orthodox community and all those who care to join us. Yes, it will be in a definite Serbian style, just like our Bible is printed in Serbian, the important aspect being not the language it is written in, but the meaning itself of the Holy Scripture. Serbia as such did not exist when Christ walked the earth, nor was He Serbian, but a Serbian is as spiritual as any other human when he or she does God s Will. Let us then build our church in our hearts first and then see it flower in stone. Lord willing, it will be beautiful and tall on the high ground, with a sunken crypt like few churches could have in Florida. After so much saving and waiting, 2007 will be the year when we begin to spend our building fund in a controlled manner for the purpose it was intended. The soil analysis is costing us $2,500, the lowest bid we found among several companies, which is how we will continue to work towards our common goal, with you by our side. May you have a blessed 2007, with health and happiness for your family, in the fear of our Lord. 17

Marko Zecevic ANNUAL ASSEMBLY On Sunday, December 17, 2006 after the holy liturgy we had our annual congress of our church and school parish of St. Petka. There were 50 parishioners present at the begging of the congress. The first order was to pick a president for a day that will be in charge and lead the talks. Branimir Buha was chosen as a temporary president and Marko Zecevic was chosen as minute keeper. We moved on to the second order of business which was statement from out priest Ljubisa Brnjos. He spoke about the current situation (arresting of Serbian men) that was present in our community. He also expanded upon many ideas and things that we as a parish can do to help these men and any other that might need help in the future. The big emphasis was put on problem with the communication and unity with one another. The Priest came up with the idea of having a set date in every month that we can meet and talk about the problems and things that are happening in our parish. Finally Father Ljubisa talked about the past year and all of the things that happened in our church. How we have lack of knowledge about our religion and our customs. The Priest also talked about the SerbFest and its organization and the outcome. The second one to give the statement was the president of the church board Jovan Dragosavac. Since the Priest spoke of the current situation in our parish the president took time to about the progress in the process of building the new St. Petka Church on our property. Jovan said that a company has been chosen to drill holes on few spots on our property to determine composite of the ground. Superior council briefly talked about how the church board handled its business and what they have accomplished and then we moved on to the voting of choosing the new church board members. After the majority wins voting the following people were chosen for the 2007church board. 20
