Jerusalem. Jerusalem was the capital of Israel and the Temple was the symbol of the Jewish heritage and legacy. Jesus is going to heralded like a king as He approaches the city. For a moment, Jesus is seen as He should be. He is King. In fact, when the religious leaders who are the elite of society ask Jesus to rebuke the people, Jesus responds that even the lowliest of creation understand who He truly is! 2 Lesson 13:An Entry of Triumph Read: Do you and your family ever go to the Fourth of July Parade or the Christmas Parade? You see a lot of bands and random floats. What is interesting is that people of local prominence ride in fancy cars and wave. Most of us do not know who they are and we have to read the sign on the car. Jesus did not have that problem. Everybody knew who He was except for the religious leaders! Open your Bibles!!! (get kids to open their bibles and read out loud) Read Luke 19:28-30 Where was Jesus going? (He was going to Jerusalem.) What two areas was Jesus approaching? ( Bethphage and Bethany near Mount Olivet.) What did he send two disciples to do? (He asked them to go and retrieve a colt.) Is that considered stealing? Read Luke 19:31-34 What were the disciples to say? (The Lord has need of it.) Isn t it amazing how everything Jesus says comes true? Isn t it amazing that the owners of the colt knew exactly who the colt was for? Read Luke 19: P a g e

3 What did the people use for a saddle for Jesus? (Coats.) What were they doing with their coats while Jesus was riding on the colt? (They were throwing them on the ground for the animal to walk on.) What does this tell you about the people? (They saw Jesus as King.) Can you imagine ruining or tearing your coat for a donkey to walk on it? Read Luke 19:37-38 What were they yelling? Go ahead and yell that as a class a few times! See if you can get a director to get you to hush!!!! Read Luke 19:39-40 What did the religious Pharisees say to Jesus? (Tell everybody to be quiet!) How did Jesus respond? (If they are silent the rocks will cry out!) Why do you think Jesus said that? Take Home: Jesus for the first time is being seen correctly. Jesus is King. Because they see Jesus correctly they begin to worship Him by tossing off their coats and waving palm branches. It is a proper celebration for the King. However, the religious leaders do not see Jesus that way and ask the King to hush His subjects. What is neat is that religious leaders who are the elite of society did not get it. However Jesus says if they do not worship me then the lowliest of creation which are rocks will cry out! The rocks know 3 P a g e

Notes and Commentary THE PREPARATION FOR ENTRY (19:28 34). 19: Luke noted that it was now time for Jesus to go up to Jerusalem and He prepared His way for the entry. Jesus had come from Jericho (18:35 19:10) and was a short distance from Jerusalem at Bethphage and Bethany. At that point He stopped until the way could be prepared so that when He entered the city people would know He was presenting Himself as the Messiah. His command to two of His disciples was to find a colt and bring it here. Jesus was fulfilling Zechariah 9:9 10, which predicted the Messiah would ride on a donkey (cf. comments on Matt. 21:2, which refers to a donkey and a colt). As is evident (Luke 19:38) the crowds would understand the message behind the symbolism. Apparently even the owners of the colt understood for they allowed the donkey to go with the disciples when they were told, The Lord needs it. 19:28 40 The Triumphal Entry. The Son of David enters Jerusalem riding on a colt. 19:28 Jerusalem. See Jerusalem in the Time of Jesus. 19:29 The location of Bethany on the eastern slopes of the Mount of Olives is well established (see note on John 11:1). Although the location of Bethphage has not been certainly identified, it was clearly farther along the road from Bethany. 19:30 Go on entering you will find. Either an example of Jesus foreknowledge or a prearrangement (cf. 22:13). A colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat implies a kind of purity that destines an animal for a sacred task (cf. animals offered to the Lord in Num. 19:2 and Deut. 21:3). Matthew 21:2 mentions that a donkey was with the colt, but Luke mentions only the colt, which was most important because Jesus would ride on it (see also note on Matt. 21:5 7). 19:32 They found it (v. 30; cf. 22:13), as Jesus had said. 19:35 set Jesus on it. Jesus fulfills a prophecy about the Messiah in Zech. 9:9 by riding on the donkey (see notes on Matt. 21:4 5; John 12:15; cf. 1 Kings 1:33). 19:36 spread cloaks on the road. An act of homage (see note on Matt. 21:8; cf. 2 Kings 9:13). 19:37 On the Mount of Olives, see note on Mark 13:3. began to rejoice (cf. Zech. 9:9) and praise God. This came primarily from Jesus disciples. all the mighty works that they had seen. The miracles they had seen recently (e.g., in Luke 9:51 19:27), and many more as well. p :38 Blessed in the name of the Lord! A blessing from Ps. 118:26 that pilgrims traveling to Jerusalem received (cf. note on Mark 11:9). 4 P a g e

5 2. JESUS ADVANCE INTO THE CITY (19:35 40). 19: Jesus advanced down the west side of the Mount of Olives (v. 37) toward the city and was praised by the crowd as their Messiah. The act of spreading their cloaks on the road (v. 36) in front of Jesus was a sign of respect. The whole crowd of disciples (mathētōn) began joyfully to praise God for all the miracles (dynameōn, evidences of spiritual power ) they had seen. These believers quoted (v. 38a) from Psalm 118:26, a messianic psalm of praise. The Pharisees understood the meaning of what was going on, for they told Jesus to rebuke His followers, so they would stop calling him Messiah or King. Jesus responded that there must be some proclamation that He is the Messiah. If not, even inanimate objects (stones) would be called on to testify for Him. All history had pointed toward this single, spectacular event when the Messiah publicly presented Himself to the nation, and God desired that this fact be acknowledged. 1 19:39 40 These verses illustrate v. 14. The Pharisees attempt to squelch the joy of the occasion is rebuked, for if the disciples stopped expressing their praise, the very stones would cry out. All creation was made to worship this King who is Lord of all. 2 Prayer Time Before you pray, allow the kids time to share with you things that are happening in their lives. Be sure you write these down with their names for you to pray for as the week goes along. Ask individuals about how things went with the things they mentioned the previous week. Older kids can be asked if they will pray for another who mentions something. As the leader, begin by opening in prayer and thanking God for this lesson: Praise Jesus for His power and control over everything. Suggested Follow-up Activities Teachers are free to choose the activities that they feel are best for their group. The idea is that as the children work and play, remind them of the truths they just learned. Scripture Memory: Figure out your reward system for memorizing the Scriptures provided in this section. Give the children several opportunities to tell it to you in class. Play a memory game with the kids if you have time. Craft: Olive Branch Color and Create an olive branch using the coloring page or green pipe cleaners! Craft: Coat Color and Create a coat and have the kids toss them on the ground to walk on!.
