Come Travel With Me By Dr. Alton Loveless This book contains 117 trips taken by author and each has appeared in a weekly newspaper column written him. Cost $19.95 All my books are available from under Alton Loveless books. Individual Money Management Walt and Rebecca have recently retired. They have been careful through the years and have managed to accumulate some resources. Having just started their retirement years the future is uncertain but they are dissatisfied with CD and money market returns. Walt: We are looking for a place to put these assets so they can work for us. We are not comfortable with the ups and downs of the stock market. If we do not need these funds we want to give a significant gift to Free Will Baptists. Rebecca: I am not comfortable managing our savings. I just want to give it to someone we can trust to do a good job and hopefully benefit the Lord's work as well. They discovered that Free Will Baptist Foundation offers Money Management trusts that can achieve their goals. Money Management trusts are fully revocable trusts that earn a variable rate of return. The funds are conservatively invested in government agency bonds and certificates of deposits. Throughout the years the funds have earned 2-3% above the inflation rate. Individuals must name a Free Will Baptist ministry as a 20% beneficiary of the Money Management trust. This provision only takes place upon the death or deaths of the individuals. Walt and Rebecca liked the concept of the Money Management Trust. It allowed them to make a provisional gift to Free Will Baptist ministries upon their deaths but retain the right to fully revoke the trust at any time. The conservative, government backed investment style was what they desired for their savings. For more information contact the Foundation toll free at or at foundation@nafwb.org>. Tom McCullough Good News from Spain "It takes a village to raise a child." (African proverb) This time five years ago, there was no church in the pueblo of Alpedrete. There was no visible evangelical witness of God's love in a town of over 15,000 people. There was no place where the few believers who lived here could gather for worship, prayer, and encouragement. But all of that changed when we opened the Alpedrete 2
Outreach Center in December of At first our plans were to establish a place to give a positive testimony and serve as Jesus' hands and feet. We wanted to show His love by ministering to the felt needs of the people who live here. Many had asked us about learning English. They longed for a way to enhance their English as a second language. So we began to offer activities in English like English Story Hour, Conversations in English, and children's singing sessions in English. We provided the activities...and they came. In fact, they even told their neighbors and friends about the Alpedrete Outreach Center. And before long, we realized that God was blessing our efforts. After just a month of Outreach Center activities, we met with believers in our town who were ready to form a church. This small storefront building which had been a children's shoe store just a few months earlier had been transformed into not only a place to have activities, but now it was a church...a place where God's name could be preached. This ministry may have officially opened in December of 2005, but it was conceived years before. In fact, over thirty years before the doors were opened, Tim was taught and trained in a Sunday School class in Michigan. He attended youth camp there as a teenager. We were commissioned as missionaries there in 1998 and sent off to "the regions beyond" to share Christ's love. And in His will and His timing, we were led to Alpedrete to begin this church. It may take a village to raise a child, but it took a "village" of Free Will Baptists to raise the Alpedrete Church into what it is today. Thank you for being a part of our "village" of supporters. Tim and Kristi Johnson Missionaries to Spain Visiting Students Give FWBBC Senior Days High Marks NASHVILLE, TN Ten seniors from seven states attended the first of three 2011 Senior Days at Free Will Baptist Bible College, giving high marks to FWBBC students, faculty, and staff for campus-wide hospitality and for providing helpful information about enrollment procedures and financial aid, according to Rusty Campbell, director of enrollment services. The visiting seniors expressed particular appreciation for sessions with faculty advisors and a luncheon with President Matt Pinson. The January snowcovered event included three students from Arkansas (Russellville and Monticello), two from Tennessee (Antioch and Old Hickory), and one student each from Kansas (Lenexa), Kentucky (Ashland), Missouri (Wentzville), North Carolina (Greenville), and Ohio (Hillsboro). We were so delighted that 10 seniors braved a winter storm that left Middle Tennessee with ice-covered roads and dangerous traveling conditions, said Mr. Campbell. That says a lot for their interest in attending FWBBC and becoming part of our Christian community of faith and learning. This group of seniors showed up determined to seize the moment. They made my week! After moving through a Thursday evening registration, the seniors shared a two-hour time of getting-to-know-you events in the gymnasium and student center. They ended the evening by participating in dormitory prayer groups. Friday began with a seminar on the admission process and details about applying for financial aid. The students attended two classes of their choice, were welcomed and recognized during chapel, and enjoyed a presidential luncheon with Dr. Matt Pinson. Advisor meetings, campus tours, and a Flames basketball game closed out a long day filled with activities. Several students commented on the Senior Days event: One said, Now that I ve come to Senior Days, I m so excited to start here next fall. Another said, It was awesome! I loved the hospitality and the personal attention I received all weekend long. A third reflected, Everyone was so friendly students, staff, faculty everyone. The next 2011 Senior Days is set for February For more information, contact the Enrollment Management Office at recruit@fwbbc.edu. JETS Publishes More Pinson, Reid Articles NASHVILLE, TN The Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society (JETS) published 3
materials by two Free Will Baptist Bible College personnel in the December 2010 issue. One item is a book review by Garnett Reid who chairs the Biblical and Ministry Studies Department; the other is a major paper on Arminian theology by President Matt Pinson. Dr. Pinson s 13-page paper, The Nature of Atonement in the Theology of Jacobus Arminius, is presented in six sections plus a summary/conclusion The Threefold Office of Christ, The Priesthood of Christ, Justice, Divine Wrath, Satisfaction, and Payment. Pinson writes, Jacobus Arminius is one of the best known and least studied theologians in the history of Christianity. His writings have been neglected by Calvinists and Arminians alike.arminius scholar Carl Bangs is correct when he says that most modern treatments of Arminius assume a definition of Arminianism that does not come from Arminius. Dr. Reid s two-page article reviews Judges, a 538-page volume by Trent Butler, published in 2009 by Thomas Nelson ($49.99). Reid says that Trent Butler likens his work in solving the riddle of Judges to that of a detective. Over the course of his investigation, Butler unravels many enigmas, examines evidence that may solve a few more, and leaves some to stand as cold cases. Reid places the volume in the top tier of studies on Judges for four reasons: It tackles difficulties in the text honestly and offers plausible solutions; it converses with an extensive sampling of modern literature on Judges; it displays sustained sensitivity to the rhetorical features of the text; it views the book as accurate historical testimony. Both Dr. Pinson and Dr. Reid are frequently published in theological journals and denominational publications. Books by Pinson include the 2009 Perspectives on Christian Worship: Five Views (ed.) (Broadman & Holman); The Washing of the Saints Feet (Randall House, 2006); Four Views on Eternal Security (ed.), (Zondervan, 2002), and others. Dr. Reid s most recent book, Deuteronomy 6 in 3D: What Matters Most, was published in 2010 by Randall House. He also writes a regular column, Intersect, in ONE Magazine. Matt Pinson has been president of FWBBC since Garnett Reid joined the FWBBC faculty in Men s Retreat Men began arriving around 6:15 p.m. Sunday, January 23, for the 2011 setting of the Michigan Men s Retreat. They continued coming until the final one arrived around 11:30 p.m. These men are serious! In keeping with the theme of men standing in the gap, Pastor Don Viers got things started off on a high note by giving a message on volunteerism. This was followed with an emotional message by Pastor Rex Evans. Brother Rex shared some of his experiences with the loss of his wife, Angie, and how he and his present wife met and married. There were few dry eyes in the crowd. Lloyd and Larry from the Southgate Free Will Baptist Church were the cooks. They did an exceptional job, especially this was their first time at such an endeavor. Rev. Scott Caudill preached Monday night and treated the passage of 1 Kings 19 with professionalism. Scott has filled in the gap at the West Wayne Free Will Baptist Church and was recommended by his pastor Rev. Joe Jones. Pastor/Home Missionary Tom Jones [Pennsylvania] preached the message Tuesday morning and shared a few things he has done wrong, but really he shared his heart and some of the obstacles he has had to overcome in the ministry. The men returned to their homes and churches encouraged and looking forward to next year. The tentative dates for the 2012 Men s Retreat are January Action Photo 4
What Cost America? By Roy W. Harris February 2 nd is a special day in the Harris family. It is always easy to remember for three reasons: it s Groundhog Day, my daughter was born on February 2 nd and I had successful quadruple bypass surgery. The most important of the three is my daughter s birthday. I well remember being called to my Army company commander s office and being informed that my wife was in labor with our first child. Thanks to the USO and a Trailways bus I was able to see my new born little girl the next morning. The date of her birth is important - February 2, The date is not important just because I love my daughter for the joy she s brought to my life since that day, but for another reason. Eleven days before her birth, a nation changing decision was made by the Supreme Court of the United States Roe V Wade which legalized abortion for the first time in America. Much has changed since Has America Changed? The United States, once a lending nation is quickly becoming a debtor nation. China, once a feared enemy, has become our chief trading partner and banker. We (the United States) now have a 14 trillion dollar debt. According to the Congressional Budget Office, our Federal Government is projected to spend 1 ½ trillion dollars more this year than it will take in. Social Security our safety net for seniors is in serious financial trouble. Many fear it will not be there as more retirees line up for their fair share of that which they worked hard for and deserve. Our roads, bridges and infrastructure are decaying at an alarming rate are in need of extensive renovation or replacement. Most states are overextended and in danger of insolvency. All and all, our nation is on the verge of financial ruin. We borrow 5 billion dollars each day above what we receive in taxes just to pay the government s bills. The sad thing is that 2 billion (40%) of that 5 billion is used to pay only the interest on what we already owe. It s like maxing out one credit card then taking out another to pay the interest on the first one. The borrowing and debt at some point will become a house of cards and will collapse from its own weight. Why are we facing such horrific financial difficulties? The old adage that we are spending more than we are taking in is a given. But I believe there may be another factor which is not often mentioned. Since 1973 over 52 million unborn babies have been legally aborted in the United States. Have you ever thought about what this may have cost America? In 1940 there were 42 workers who underwrote each person who received monthly Social Security checks. Now (according to Prudential Insurance stats) there are 3.3 workers supporting each recipient. If those 52 million babies had been born, they would be moving along through the cycle of life. For the last 20 years, those 18 and older would be in the work force, earning paychecks, purchasing homes, buying cars, having children of their own and paying taxes. What a difference 52 million more souls would make to our present financial picture. We have and are continuing to literally murder our future, one abortion at a time. Besides our financial loss, God only knows what else it has cost us. Maybe the cure for cancer was in the future mind of one of those little ones. New technologies that might have finally released us from the grip of foreign oil slipped through the fingers of the abortion doctor s hands. The voice of a statesman who may have impacted our nation s future and maybe world history will never be heard. America has another deficit to worry about and continues to grow each day. It is a deficit of blood innocent blood. God s Word is very clear when it comes to destroying the lives of the innocent. The shedding of innocent blood brings with it the wrath of God. He destroyed the people of Canaan for sacrificing their children to heathen gods. I fear we are participating in similar practices by sacrificing the unborn to our gods of selfishness, convenience, and attempts to cover immoral behavior. In God s eyes, each little one has a face, a name and a soul. They have been robbed of the greatest human right the right to LIFE. The cost is enormous and it could be that American has begun to pay. As we continue to remove one moral landmark after another, I fear the very foundation upon which our republic has rested 5
Michigan State Association of Free Will Baptists 4166 Maplewood Meadows Avenue Grand Blanc, MI safely is cracking and is beginning to disintegrate. If we do not return to God s prescription for success, America will become just another sick nation which died in the pages of history. The answer to America s future does not lay in exporting more goods, importing less oil or raising more money. The answer is so simple and it can be heard from God Himself: Ps 33:10-12 The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect. The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations. Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD. America s future will be impacted by past and present decisions. We have much to account for. As a nation, we owe a debt we cannot pay. Only God can reverse the direction of America. We must beg Him for a little more time and ask Him, through His Holy Spirit, to change America His way. 6
