1 PCA ELEMENTARY NEWSLETTER JUNE, 2016 We are God s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works Ephesians 2:10a Thanks Readers! - once again you made the Club 100 celebration possible for everyone. Many people have commented on how beautiful the weather was one of the best evenings in years. I loved walking around the pond watching kids excitedly catch frogs, tadpoles and whatever other water creatures they could discover from God s creation. Keep reading everyone! There is still time to complete Club 150 and Club 200. Those who reach Club 200 by June 14 will sit down to Breakfast with the Principal on June 16. (note: this date has changed since the last newsletter) Excitement is mounting as we anticipate our move back to PCA at the end of June. I love being able to share with those who skeptically ask if we will be back at PCA for the start of the next year that yes it is actually going to happen. I continue to be amazed and thankful at how God has gone before this whole process and provided us with this new/modernized facility in ways above and beyond that we could ever imagine. Thanks to Golden Hills School Division for believing in this project and making it happen. We are grateful. Pray for us as a school as we work through the joys and challenges of melding two sites together that have never been under one roof in the history of the school. It is with mixed emotions that we say goodbye to our Principal Randy Wood at the end of June. While we wish him the best in his ventures with Northstar Academy, we will still miss him here. Please keep him in your prayers as well as our new Principal, Mr. Darryl Hern, who we are excited to welcome on board in the Fall. I would also like to thank you as parents for entrusting your children to us during this past year. It has been a privilege to partner with you to help educate your children for eternity. Children must be 5 years old by February 28, Please bring your child s birth certificate when you register your child. New families: please book an interview with Miss Lockhart. 3 Page 3 Scripture Memory Challenge Believing Scripture memorization to be very important and wanting to reinforce the passages that have been learned this year, any student who can say all 8 passages with a 90% average in each one will receive a Scripture Memory medal on Awards Day. These passages may be said to Miss Lockhart during the week of June 6 to 10. The study sheet for these passages are attached to this newsletter. 4 Page 4 Library News As we approach the end of the school year, we need to complete the annual library inventory. In order to do this, all library books must be accounted for. Please make sure that all books are returned by June 9th or if the book is lost, come in and pay the replacement cost of the book. After June 20th, any outstanding fines or unreturned books, will be charged to your school account. Thanks for helping us to maintain our library and at the same time help our students develop a sense of responsibility. Mrs. Marilyn Burden The most important 20 minutes of the day... Read with a Child! FUN FIELD DAY We are looking forward to our Fun and Field day this year. This is an annual event for all Grade 1 to 6 students. The start time will be announced later in June. As in the past, your entire family is welcome to come and watch the PCA students participate in a variety of fun activities and field events and to enjoy lunch together. Trochu Valley School has generously offered us the use of their track for this day. Parents, you may be called upon to help out with the events as you move from station to station with your children. Thank you in advance. Please go to School Cash On Line to order hot dogs for your family if you would like. Hot dogs are $1.25 each. You will find the option to order under all of your children s names but you only need to order through one of your children. The item will not disappear until after the due date, so just like Subway lunch orders, please check the payment history tab if you forget whether or not you have made an order already. You must order BEFORE June 20th so we have time to make our order at IGA. See you there! As in past years, we ask that ALL families please bring 1 dozen cookies for the kids to snack on during their break time from their events.

5 PCA Elementary Award Criteria (taken from Page 15 & 16 of the student handbook) Page 5 XIV. Awards A. PCA Elementary Citizenship Award and Daniel Award Criteria Students considered for the Citizenship and Daniel awards must promote a positive class spirit, exhibiting Christian character. (see XV #3 below) - Citizenship award recipients are acknowledged on Awards day and their names are displayed along with the Daniel award recipients. - Daniel award recipients receive a plaque, one per class, grades one to six. They are chosen from among the citizenship award recipients. The Daniel award may be earned only once while at PCA Elementary. The Citizenship award may be earned annually. The faculty and staff review potential Citizenship Award and Daniel Award recipients prior to awards day to evaluate their consistent display of Christian character throughout school classes and activities. B. Bible Memory Awards Criteria - For those students who can recite all 8 Bible passages, learned throughout the year, orally in June with a 90% or above in each one, special r3ecognition and award will be given to those students at the annual awards ceremony. - A certificate with a gold seal is given for Bible Memory, awarded for a 90% or better average on the entire year s course. XV. Certificates A certificate will be handed out to each student, with stickers as follows. 1. As God s creation, everyone is special and therefore receives a YOU ARE SPECIAL sticker. 2. As applicable, everyone receives promotion and perfect attendance stickers. 3. Each student will receive 2 stickers indicating their top Christian character traits from the following list: - courteous, friendly, helpful, kind, servant heart, cheerful, creative, diligent, and encourager, Faithful worker, sportsmanship, caring, organized, loyal, consistent, reliable, conscientious, energetic. 4. Each student will receive 2 stickers indicating their top subjects from the following list: - athletics, art, Bible, language arts, math, reading, penmanship, science social studies, spelling, music, creative writing, technology, public speaking, math facts. 6 Page 6 SABRES ATHLETIC BANQUET Plans are underway for the 13th Annual Prairie Christian Academy Sabres Athletic Banquet/ Fundraiser to be held October 1, This banquet raises funds mainly for the on-going athletic program at Prairie Christian Academy, but additionally, has provided the funds to purchase the Sabres 24-passenger bus, which is not only used by the various Sabres Teams, but is available to and utilized by the entire school for field trips and dorm trips. Although the date seems far away, the Athletic Banquet Planning Committee would like to remind you of the ways in which you could be of assistance right now. 1) If you own a business and have not had the opportunity to sponsor the event and/or advertise at the Sabres Athletic Banquet before, contact one of the Committee Members if you are interested. 2) Let the Committee know if you have an item or items that you would like to donate for the live or silent auction, or for door prizes. 3) Volunteer to help with the banquet/fundraiser. You do not have to be a parent of an athlete to give assistance!! Remember, the whole school benefits from the monies raised at this event. Please contact the Athletic Director. 4) The PCA alumni directory continues to grow and we are confident that the PCA family possesses names and addresses of alumni that we are missing. Please encourage your alumni friends and family to contact PCAS with their updated information for our files. (Also, invite them to the Alumni Games and Banquet!) 7 Page 7 Dear Parents of Upcoming Kindergarten Students: In order to introduce your child to Kindergarten next year and also to let them experience what it is like, we are inviting them to come to a Kindergarten Preview on June 24th from 9:00-11:30 am at PCA Elementary at our temporary Trochu campus. Your child will be welcome to ride the bus out to the school in the morning (bus leaves from the RDAC at 8:40 am) but you will need to pick them up at the Trochu campus (Trochu arena) at 11:30 am. More details will follow as we arrive closer to the day but this is to give you a heads-up to put it on your calendar. Now that the warm weather is here, below is a general reminder of the PCA Elementary Dress Code: PCA Elementary Dress Code (taken from Page 22 & 23 of the student handbook) XXIII. Policies A. Dress/Grooming Our aim is to promote modesty and neatness in dress, appropriate to Christian character and purpose. 1. Pants or jeans must be in good repair (ie no holes in the knees) 2. Shorts (including for gym and sports), skirts and dresses should be no shorter than one hand width above the knee. 3. Students are asked to wear shirts that do not expose the midriff. Also not allowed are spaghetti straps (except over other clothing) and tight or spandex shorts. 4. Girls are required to wear a one piece bathing suit for any school sponsored swimming events. 5. Shirts with pictures or slogans must be consistent with good Christian character. 6. Hair should be neat and well-groomed with no extreme styles. 7. Make-up should not be worn, except for chapstick/lip gloss. We expect parents to ensure the rules are followed. The need for policing by teachers should be the exception.
