1 St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Parish 440 Kendall Street, Burlington, WI February 17, 2019 The Very Reverend James Volkert, Pastor The Reverend Carlos Zapata, Associate Pastor Deacon Anton Nickolai Mission Statement: St. Charles Borromeo, St. Joseph, Immaculate Conception, (St. Mary), united in proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ through His saving death and resurrection, by calling, forming and sending disciples to go out and make new disciples. As a people, we are called to encounter Jesus, and grow as disciples through the sacramental life of the church.

2 A Message from Fr. Jim... The Amazing Parish Conference New Focus for Parishes This past October a convention was held in Milwaukee called The Amazing Parish. Every parish in the Archdiocese was represented as well as nearly fifty other Archdioceses and Dioceses from across the country. Archbishop Listecki directed every pastor to participate and to implement the philosophy of this conference. The purpose of this convention was to promote the renewal of parish life by transforming the focus of the parish ministry from maintenance to mission. Our Church has changed much in the last10-15 years. In the past the goal of any parish was to keep things status quo. The parishes at that time were large, some with large schools, had many committees and organizations and plenty of volunteers to fill them. Many of the parishes were well working communities and the job of the pastor was to make sure that this continued. In recent times, however, things have changed rather significantly. Our parishes are smaller, our schools have fewer students, the number of volunteers has dropped and it is very common that a pastor has more than one parish to oversee. In many cases, the pastor is no longer able to maintain things the way they used to be. One key element that The Amazing Parish emphasizes as essential to the development of a healthy organization in a parish is the creation of a Parish Leadership Team. This team is to be comprised of a small number of parishioners who will support and assist the pastor in the governance of the parish. The Leadership Team is to serve as advisors who help bring about more effective leadership. The development of these teams is a recognition that the operation of a parish or cluster of parishes has become much more complex. No pastor likely has the gifts or skills needed to provide complete guidance to a parish community. I am happy to announce that I have selected members from our congregations to serve as our Tri-Parish Leadership Team. They are: Tom Aldrich, Loretta Jackson, Karen Middlecamp and Rachelle Haacker. Since November we have been meeting on a weekly basis. The Amazing Parish defines five essentials to the Leadership Team: 1) building trust (especially through shared prayer) 2) mastering conflict, 3) achieving commitment toward clarity and closure, 4) a willingness to confront difficult issues, and 5) focus on results and collective outcomes. We begin each of our meetings with an extended period of spontaneous prayer which has helped us to be open to the direction and inspiration of the Holy Spirit. Our discussions center on the following areas of parish life: prayer, morale, Sunday experience, faith formation, finances, youth ministry, facilities, communication, outreach/evangelization, stewardship, schools, and upcoming activities. One very important note needs to be made. The Tri-Parish Leadership Team does not take the place of the Tri- Pastoral Council, the Finance Councils, or any of the committees in the parishes. I am very grateful to the folks who have agreed to make up our Tri-Parish Leadership Team. I have enjoyed the time we have been meeting and appreciate their guidance and direction. The Archbishop believes that if the parishes in the Archdiocese are faithful to the philosophy of The Amazing Parish our mission can be transformed to better suit the needs of our time. That is my hope for our three parishes! God bless you always! Fr. Jim Volkert Mass Schedule Weekend: Saturday, 5:15 pm, Sunday 8:00 & 10:00 & 12:00 Noon (Spanish) Information for the bulletin is due by Weekday: Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday 8:30 10 AM on Tuesdays to Sacramental Life bulletineditor@mystcharles.org. The safety of our parishioners and staff is very important. Please check your local news first, for closings in our area. New Resource: Praying Together as a Couple The Office of Evangelization, Marriage, and Family Life is excited to announce the creation of Praying Together as a Couple Becoming One in God. This attractive, user-friendly, free resource is designed to help Catholic couples build a habit of placing God at the center of their relationship by praying with and for each other. For more information and to order go to: Are you taking RMD s from your IRA s? There are a lot of tax perks to be gained from giving your Required Minimum Distributions {RMD} from an IRA directly to a charity like St. Charles Parish, particularly if you don t itemize. If you make a direct transfer from your IRA to St. Charles Parish, you get to count that money toward your RMD but because it s not actually distributed to you, it won t increase your adjusted gross income. The move is especially valuable if you don t itemize your deductions, because it lets you reap a tax benefit for your generosity. You should discuss this with your tax person for further details before proceeding. St. Charles Spaghetti Dinner Please join us on Saturday, March 2, for a night of fun for the Spaghetti Dinner. We will be serving dinner in Andre Hall from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Dinner includes spaghetti with sauce and meatballs, salad, Italian bread, beverages, and dessert. The proceeds will be used for Parish improvements. Pricing Adults = $10, Seniors = $9, Children (5-12) = $6, Under 5 = Free Volunteers We need your help to make this event a success. Anyone interested in volunteering, please see the parish website ( for a link to sign up. Additionally, we re calling all meatball rollers to please join us Thursday, February 28, at 1 p.m. in Andre Hall as we roll and cook meatballs for the event. Barb Richter will be leading the effort. 5 THANK YOU!! Thank you to all who participated in our Souper Bowl of Caring event on Sunday Feb. 3. Together, our Tri-Parish Community raised over $1300 and collected over 325 items for Gerard's Embrace, a home for pregnant homeless women in East Troy. I would like to thank those who made soup, over 10 delicious soups to choose from, donated bread and dessert for the luncheon. Also a big thank you to all those who helped serve soup, bus tables, count items, do dishes and help in the kitchen. A special thank you to all of you who came and ate, donated items or money for this worthy cause. Gerard's Embrace is making sure that these moms and babies get off to a good start and have a safe place to live and you are helping them. Their first baby was born on Thursday, Feb. 6. 6 M I N I S T E R I O H I S P A N O SEXTO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO Meditación del Papa Francisco Se rinde un culto idolátrico al dinero.
