King of Kings Lutheran Church Connecting People to Christ Now and Forever 3621 Socialville-Foster Road, Mason, Ohio Rev. John W. Mueller, Pastor ext. 302 or ) Debbie Billman, Director, Worship & Music Ministries ext. 325 or ) Vicky Lesiak, Early Childhood Education Ministries Director ext. 304) Malinda Long-Copland, Administrative Assistant Sydney Van Pelt, Church Office Assistant ext. 301) Welcome to King of Kings! Our prayer is that the Holy Spirit will draw you closer to the living God through your time of worship with us today and strengthen your connection to Christ our Savior. Please refer to the maps at both entrances for location of rooms. A staffed nursery is available for children through kindergarten age. Prayer cards are available just outside the Worship Center (gym). The Education hour begins at 9:45 am. Current studies include: Adults: A Longer Look at the Lessons (Pastor John, Fellowship Hall) Junior and Senior High Youth (grades 6 12): Not-So-Nice Bible Stories Master Criminals (Laura Pieper and Su Polzin, room 100) Sunday School: Hands-On Bible Study (ages 3 through grade 5, gather in Luther Chapel for opening) + Celebration of Holy Communion at King of Kings + We believe that Holy Communion is a Sacrament whereby we receive, under the bread and wine, the true Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins. Our Lord invites to His table those who trust His words, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love others as He forgives and loves us (Matthew 6:15). Our gathering together at Jesus table also gives us the opportunity to profess our common faith as one church family (1 Corinthians 10:17). Guests who are members of other LCMS congregations are invited to commune with us. Visitors from other churches, or guests without a church home, are invited to come forward and place your hands over your heart to receive a blessing as you stand with those communing. Children are also invited to come forward with their parents for a special blessing. If you have any questions regarding the Sacrament or your desire to receive it, Pastor Mueller is eager to meet with you. Please feel free to contact Pastor John Mueller at pastor.john@koklcms.org or
Replanted! (Jeremiah 17: 5 8) Arrogant, misplaced trust in self does not go unnoticed by God. God responds by causing the idolatrous self-worshipper to fend for himself, blind to God s goodness and left with nothing for eternity. God, however, is ever ready to transplant repentant sinners to the fertile ground of His powerful Word and sacraments. May the Holy Spirit lead us to strengthen our trust in our Lord, whose gracious blessings fortify our being able to be faithful to His holy expectations and to endure even the hardest of times. Prelude The Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany February 17, 2019; 8:15 am Greeting and Announcements Preparing our Hearts for Worship Musical Interlude Opening Hymn I Am Trusting Thee, Lord Jesus #729 Confession P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination) P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
Page 2 Absolution P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of the Word, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Introit Selected Verses from Psalm 119 Antiphon Psalm 119:7 P: I will praise You with an upright heart, C: When I learn Your just and righteous decrees. P: Blessèd are those whose way is blameless, C: Who walk in the law of the LORD! P: Blessèd are those who keep His testimonies, C: Who seek Him with their whole heart. P: You have commanded Your precepts C: To be kept diligently. P: Oh that my ways may be steadfast C: In keeping Your statutes! ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P: I will praise You with an upright heart, C: When I learn Your just and righteous decrees. Kyrie (tune: Thy Strong Word ) For God s peace and for salvation: Lord, have mercy, hear our prayer. For God s peace in all creation: Lord, have mercy, hear our prayer. For all here who join in worship With God s people everywhere: Help, save, comfort, and defend us, Lord, have mercy, hear our prayer.
Page 3 Gloria in Excelsis (Tune: Oh, Worship the King ) Let anthems ne er cease: All glory to God! On earth let God s peace be showered abroad. We praise You, we bless You, Your glory we sing; We worship, confess You, our Father, our King! Our Lord Jesus Christ, You God s Son alone, The Lamb sacrificed; on high is Your throne. Have mercy, O Savior; our sin take away; Regard us with favor, and hear when we pray. For You, Christ, are Lord, exalted aright, Forever adored in God s glory bright. To Father, Son, Spirit the great Three in One The praise that You merit forever be done! Salutation and Collect P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: We pray together: ALL: Lord God, heavenly Father, since we cannot stand before You relying on anything we have done, help us to trust in Your abiding grace and to live according to Your Word; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. The Old Testament Lesson Jeremiah 17: 5 8 (The Lord warns of the consequences of trusting self rather than trusting in the Lord. The Lord promises, to those who trust in Him, that He will bring them to His refreshing means of grace that sustain in the worst of times and enable productive, God-pleasing lives.) 5 Thus says the LORD: Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the LORD. 6 He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. 7 Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. 8 He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.
Page 4 Response to the Old Testament Lesson R: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. The Epistle Lesson 1 Corinthians 15: (Paul builds careful arguments, through skill in classic logic and rhetoric [the art of persuasion], to explain the critical importance of the resurrection. He exposes the foolish implications of the Corinthians doubts about the resurrection with a series of if-then sentences.) 12 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. 20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. R: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. The Hymn of the Day The Man is Ever Blessed #705
Page 5 The Holy Gospel Luke 6: (Jesus preaches and ministers to the crowds. Jesus blesses the crowds and describes their estates, in this life and the life to come. Jesus condemns those who live for today, neglecting the ways of God and the care of His people.) R: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the sixth chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. 17 And he came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, 18 who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them all. 20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh. 22 Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! 23 Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets. 24 But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. 25 Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep. 26 Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets. R: This is the Gospel of our Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. Children s Message Pastor John
Page 6 The Creedal Hymn (Tune: Immortal, Invisible ) In God we believe: the Creator whose pow r In mercy has brought us for worship this hour. He graciously grants us our years and our days And blesses with kindness our work and our ways. In Jesus, our Savior, our hope is secured. True God and true man, once the cross He endured To grant our lives wholeness, forgiveness of sin. With hearts freed from guilt, we know true peace within. God s Spirit at work in our lives we confess; With power and truth the church now He does bless. As saints, God s forgiven, one day we shall then Be living in glory forever. Amen. The Message Replanted! Pastor John Text: Jeremiah 17: 5 8 The Nicene Creed The Nicene Creed ALL: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Page 7 Prayer of the Church P: Lord, in Your mercy, C: Hear our prayer. Offering (We welcome our guests who are worshiping with us this morning; please consider your time spent in God s house as your offering to Him. As the offering is collected, we ask that each person sign the Fellowship Pad, located on the first chair in the center aisle of each row. If you are visiting for the first time, please include your contact information.) + The Sacrament of the Lord s Supper + The Preface P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give Him thanks and praise. P: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: The Sanctus (tune: All Creatures of Our God and King ) O God of hosts, almighty Lord, Sov reign by earth and heav n adored, God most holy, holy, holy! In God s name coming, blest is He Whose blood and body set us free. Sing hosanna in the highest. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!
Page 8 The Lord s Prayer ALL: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The Words of Our Lord P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. P: The Peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you. Amen. The Agnus Dei (tune: Lord, Keep us Steadfast in Thy Word ) O Lamb of God, You take away the sin of all; Lord, hear us pray: Your Spirit send; our faith increase. Have mercy on us, grant us peace. O Lamb of God, our guilt You bore that we might ransomed be once more. Your Spirit send; our hope increase. Have mercy on us, grant us peace. O Lamb of God for sinners slain, at God s right hand for-e er You reign. Your Spirit send; our love increase. Have mercy on us, grant us peace. + Distribution of the Lord s Supper at King of Kings + If you are receiving a blessing instead of the Sacrament, please place your hands over your heart. After the bread is distributed, the wine is available to each communicant in one of two ways. Individual cups of wine are first passed (there is white grape juice in the center of each tray). All who do not take the individual cups will be offered the chalice; please make sure the communion assistant can see your individual cup. The individual cups may be placed in the baskets in the front row by the center aisle.
Page 9 Distribution Hymns Rock of Ages #761 You Are the Way, Through You Alone #526 Post-Communion Collect P: We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C: Amen. Benediction P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace; in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Closing Hymn Sent Forth by God s Blessing #643 Postlude His Vision in Action When God provides spiritual nourishment, His deeply rooted children will flourish and produce what pleases God as the Heavenly Gardener.
