Backstage (MMCC) history theology movement questions

History pre-1995 McDowell Mountain Community Church began as a dream and mission. Don Doe, Senior Pastor of North Hills Church in north Phoenix, saw the rapidly expanding north Scottsdale area as an opportunity. As the Shea corridor developed, he sensed God leading him to develop a new church community. But Don wasn t interested in just another church - he was interested in a safe, authentic community that allowed people to wrestle with and develop faith. He wanted to lead a community of people who would help others to know God s love and grace - and then help them learn to follow Jesus. This vision of a church was so strong that Don, his wife and three kids*, made the decision to leave a healthy, growing church to start something new - McDowell Mountain Community Church. ** Don and Lori Doe Randee, Jared and Richard Doe Don Doe began to gather support for this new church plant. Many churches from around the country contributed, including Crossings Community Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Though they didn t know it at the time, CCC would continue to be a part of the MMCC story years later. He also began to build a core team around him - others who caught on to the vision for the growing Scottsdale area. They soon identified a location that would serve as their gathering place, Laguna Elementary School. And at 9.30am on Sunday, October 1, 1995, MMCC held it s first gathering/worship service. The following Bible verse, found in Isaiah , served as a reminder of God s promise in those early days: All your people will live right and well, in permanent possession of the land. They re the green shoot that I planted, planted with my own hands to display my glory. The runt will become a great tribe, the weakling become a strong nation. I am God. At the right time I ll make it happen. As this new community grew over the next 10 years, they found a home at Desert Mountain High School. It was here that a new story would begin to be written. Don Doe and the leadership of the church sensed a need to have a permanent home - a place to gather together, and a place to share with the community. Through what has been described as nothing short of a miracle - a gift from God - land was purchased on the Northwest corner of N 124th Street and Shea Boulevard. As money

was contributed and pledged, an architect began to draw plans for what would become a gathering place for MMCC. In 2006, construction began on the new building, and it opened to a packed house on Christmas Eve of Pastor Don Doe is known for many things, but especially his engaging, humorous and powerful teachings of Scripture. And because of that, he has always been a highly sought after pastor of churches looking for new pastoral leadership. In 2007, Don began to sense as though his time at MMCC was coming to a close. He and Lori had many conversations with a church in Vancouver, Washington, and after much prayer and contemplation, made the decision to accept an offer to pastor Vancouver First Church. Don announced that decision in November 2007 and preached his last sermon as MMCC s Senior Pastor in February was a year of transition for MMCC. With a new building and no lead pastor, there was concern about the future. On a larger scale, the country was in a financial meltdown, which added to the anxiety of paying for a new building and continuing the mission that began in A search team began to look for a new leader - which lead them back to Crossings Community Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Matt Anderson had been serving as the Associate Preaching Pastor of this large church. Not knowing the story or search happening in Scottsdale, AZ, he and his wife, Robin, began to feel a growing pull to step away from their church home and lead a young church. Conversations began. And after interviews, visits and much prayer and contemplation, Matt and Robin (and kids - Connor, Calvin and Charlie) accepted an offer to move to Scottsdale and lead McDowell Mountain Community Church present With new leadership comes new focus and energy and direction. Though the original mission remains the same, the way that mission is communicated has changed. Matt and his family were never interested in being part of a church that simply goes through the motions of religion. Matt s desire is for people to know God s grace and love, revealed in Christ, and be transformed to live differently because of that grace and love. In these last few years, MMCC has continued to grow as a community and it s impact has expanded here in the Phoenix area and around the world. As an outflow of the vision, MMCC has become a Missional Church - a church engaged in the culture at large, helping to bring the Kingdom of God into the present world. Matt, the pastoral leadership and the church leadership believes MMCC s best days are ahead - as God continues to work in and through us as a church community.

Theology a Primer A statement of faith, or a church s theology, is always a difficult proposition. Christians, through the ages, have held a wide variety of beliefs, and have often differed in their expressed theology. Our theological roots are grounded in a tradition that desired unity in the church. With that in mind, there are a few foundational thoughts to our theology: 1. God is beyond human language s ability to perfectly define. While descriptive, our language is not complete in describing the all-powerful, all-knowing, all-loving God. 2. Though we do not know the author of the following, it defines our desire theologically: In essentials, unity; in nonessentials, liberty; in all things, charity. We are a church community that represents many different theological leanings and roots. 3. Christ is at the center of all things, including our theology. (Colossians 1.15+) Statement of Faith The following are the core beliefs of MMCC. 1. The Bible is the expressed Word of God and is our final authority in all matters of faith and practice. 2. God, all-loving Creator of the heavens and the earth, eternally exists in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. 3. Jesus is eternal and fully Divine. He became fully human, born of the virgin Mary. He was crucified for crimes He didn t commit, and through His resurrection, freed all people from the power of sin and death. He will return again, ushering in the eternal Kingdom of God. All who respond to the work and teachings of Jesus by a personal belief that is represented in a changing life will live forever with Him. 4. Salvation, a free gift from God, is God s desire for all humanity to be in right relationship with Him. In turning from a self-centered life and turning to God, accepting the work Christ accomplished, one receives new and eternal life.

5. The Holy Spirit is eternal, continually drawing men and women to God. Being marked by the Holy Spirit as children of God, believers are encouraged, transformed to be like Christ, convicted of sin and empowered to serve others. Significant Faith Markers Baptism - Christian baptism is a symbolic act that represents the new life one has found in following Jesus. It symbolizes the washing away of an old way of life and new birth into a life with Christ. It represents the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ and the new believer. It is an outward sign of an inward change. We often refer to baptism as going public with your faith in Christ. Communion - The Bible recounts a story of Jesus final night with His disciples. He was celebrating the Passover meal with them. During the meal, He took a loaf of bread and told them that the bread represented His body, which would be broken for them. He then took a cup of wine and told them that the wine represented His blood, which would be poured out for the forgiveness of sins. After eating and drinking together, Jesus instructed them to practice this regularly - as a way of remembering the sacrifice that He was making and to commit themselves to a life of sacrifice. Communion is a time of remembering the sacrifice of Christ and committing ourselves to sacrifice for others. The bread and the juice are symbolic reminders of the body and blood of Jesus. Parent Baby Dedication - Parent Baby dedication at MMCC is a statement of thanksgiving and commitment made by parents. It is a recognition that children are a gift from God - and with that gift comes great responsibility. Parents make a commitment before the church community, to raise their children to know God s love and grace and to follow Jesus. The church community commits to come alongside parents, providing a loving, encouraging, teaching environment for children.

Movement Mission McDowell Mountain Community Church is a Christ-centered church. We are a community learning to: LOVE GOD by living out the teachings of Jesus and LOVE OTHERS with no strings attached. Core Values Relational - We are a relational church. We believe humanity was created with a deep-seeded need to be in healthy relationship with one another. In other words, we were all created for community. In fact, when God looked down on His creation in Genesis 2, the only thing that was not good was that Adam was all alone. As a church, we work to create environments where we can build healthy relationships with one another. This includes laughing together, playing together, celebrating with one another, mourning with one another... and living out all the other one another phrases from the New Testament. Biblical - We believe the Bible is the story of God s activity in the world we know. We also believe that God invites all of us to participate in the story He is writing in the world. (Actually, each of us is already in the story, whether we recognize it or not.) We work to create environments where people can take steps in understanding the story and participating in the story. We want to know the Bible and participate in the Bible. Missional - We live in a broken world. God is working to redeem what s been broken. As we see brokenness all around us, we are invited to join God by helping redeem and restore that brokenness. As a church, we create practical opportunities to love others with no strings attached... to join with God in His redemption and restoration. We don t simply want to hang around with other Christians and learn more about the Bible. We want to participate in God s restoration and redemption, read about in the pages of Scripture, as we walk in healthy relationship with one another.

Structure Jesus - Jesus is our authority and the head of the church. Board of Servant Leaders - Our Board is made up of six people who have a heart to serve this local church. They work behind the scenes, in the finances and business exercise of the church. They work to ensure that our Pastoral and Ministry Staff, as well as our physical plant, is equipped to be able to lead this church community. Board members serve two-year terms and can be re-elected to three (3) consecutive terms before s/he must take at least a one (1) year break from serving. Pastoral and Ministry Team - Our pastors and ministry leaders handle day-to-day affairs and ministry of the church. 10 community All communities seem to have events or habits or markers that begin to define them. MMCC has three regular activities that are essential to who we are and who we are becoming. Sunday Morning Gatherings A people must gather regularly to form community. Just being together connects us as a church. But there is also something significant that happens when we join together to turn our hearts and our minds toward God. We reset ourselves, individually and collectively, on God s grace and mercy and love - and His call to reflect His grace and mercy and love to a broken world. Rows to Circles While Sunday morning gatherings connect us at some level, it is not possible to build healthy relationships where we truly know others and are known by others only on Sunday mornings. Moving from the rows on Sunday mornings to circles (smaller groups) helps us to encourage one another, support one another, pray for one another, rejoice with one another, mourn with one another and love one another. Groups take on many forms, but they are essential to our development of a community. Missional Engagement Loving others with no strings attached isn t just a catchy phrase that makes us feel better about ourselves - it is an essential movement in the life of our community. We work to find regular, practical ways to love others in our city and around the world. If we fail to do this, we fail to be a Christ-centered church. Here are some of the partnerships we have formed to help us engage missionally: the Phoenix Rescue Mission Food for the Hungry - Sierra Prieta, Dominican Republic Children s First Academy of Phoenix, the country s largest school for the homeless UMOM, a shelter providing medical care and education for some of our most vulnerable

Next steps We are a simple church and we try not to create hoops to jump through. We do have a commitment card you can sign if you consider this your church home. Other than that, we want you to take steps in three areas: GATHER on Sundays Make Sunday mornings a priority. Join us as we connect with one another and turn our hearts and minds toward God. Contact Joe Webb - joe@mmccaz.com MOVE from Rows to Circles Take a step relationally and spiritually by being a part of a smaller group. We believe the best environment for sustained life change is in the context of a small group of people who know and love each other. Contact Jeff Mugford - jeff@mmccaz.com LOVE Others with No Strings Attached Join in God s effort to redeem and restore a broken world. This isn t just about a mission project, but is about the way we interact in our neighborhoods, our schools, our businesses and our hobbies. Find practical ways to love others. Contact Michael Fay - michael@mmccaz.com Children & Students If you have children, infant - 5th grade, and would like to get them connected in age-appropriate activities, contact Lori Prather - lori@mmccaz.com.
