2 THE QUOTABLE DOMINICAN St. Dominic Ibañez de Erquicia, O.P. St. Dominic Ibañez, St. Lorenzo Ruiz and the martyrs of Japan are remembered by the Order of Preachers on September let us so act that we may see one another in heaven for all eternity, fearing no separation here. Let us have no concern for this world, for it is our exile and separates us from God who is our total good. From a letter to his father, written after witnessing the persecution and torture of his fellow Christians in Japan, as depicted in the painting below. The Rosary Sunday: Dominican Student Appeal is coming in October! 2 MissionWest opwest.org opwest.org/rs It s your chance to directly support the religious formation of our 31 fantastic Dominican Student Brothers and Novices. The world needs them and they need you! DID YOU KNOW? Born on March 2, 1585 in Spain, St. Juan Macias is one of the lesser known saints of the Order of Preachers. Like his friend St. Martin de Porres, Juan was not a priest, but a faithful friar who preached the Gospel in ways hidden to most. On January 22, 1622, Juan received the Dominican habit at the Priory of La Magdalena in Peru, where he served as porter. Although he preferred solitude and contemplation, he would provide food for those who came to the priory in need, sometimes over 200 people a day. He also had an unusual way to raise money. Tradition tells us that he trained a donkey to travel throughout town and collect alms from the usual benefactors to the priory. Juan died on Sept. 16, 1646, and a miracle occurred during his funeral shortly thereafter, when a deaf priest used Juan s hand to bless his ear, and his hearing was restored. Our sincere gratitude is extended to all those who helped make this edition of the newsletter possible. Photo Credits: Fr. Anthony Rosevear, O.P., Br. Thomas Aquinas Pickett, O.P., Br. 3 A LETTER TO YOU from the vicar provincial for advancement Dear Friend of St. Dominic, For Catholics, the end of May and beginning of June always bring about ordinations to the priesthood and diaconate. These are exciting times in the life of the Church, the young men ordained, their families, and the religious communities or dioceses they belong to. It is a celebration of life that infuses great energy and grace into families and religious orders. This past year, with God s grace and your support, the Western Dominican Province was blessed to ordain four men to the transitional diaconate: Rev. Brs. Christopher, Bradley Thomas, Thomas Aquinas and Pius. You can see beautiful photos from their ordination in this newsletter. Before a man is ordained a priest, he must be ordained to the diaconate first. He functions as a deacon for about a year or so, engaging in many offices such as baptizing, officiating at marriages, and preaching an office especially important to a Dominican! Although there are many types of preaching, both with words and without, one of the most recognizable forms of preaching is from the pulpit at Mass. For our young Dominican brothers recently ordained deacons, this is their first opportunity to hone that skill of preaching at Mass. Please keep them in your prayers as they prepare for priesthood, learn how to function in a new role, and continue to grow as Preachers of Truth. As you know, one of the most important places for encouraging the faithful, and leading people to a deeper conversion in Christ, is the Sunday homily. Sadly, we ve all experienced a well-intentioned preacher whose homily was not very effective or engaging. So I ask that you please pray for Catholic preaching, and that the Holy Spirit may continue to inspire preachers and guide their study. Your generosity gives our Dominican brothers the means to study and contemplate the word of God critical support for any preacher. Thank you for helping us Preach the Truth of Jesus Christ, rooted in Love! In Christ and St. Dominic, Very Rev. Fr. James Junípero Moore, O.P. Vicar Provincial for Advancement Cover Photo: While visiting our community in Eugene, Oregon, Brs. Athanasius, John, Paschal, Andrew Thomas and Paul Maria went for a brisk hike to a nearby waterfall. Thanks to your support and prayers, and by the grace of God, all five brothers professed first vows on September 2, CONNECT WITH US opwest.org MissionWest
4 Your Generosity Helps Lead Four More Men to Ordination Rev. Brothers Christopher, Bradley Thomas, Thomas Aquinas and Pius are now ready to serve you as deacons We re excited to announce the May 27th diaconate ordinations of Brs. Christopher, Bradley Thomas, Thomas Aquinas and Pius. Please accept our sincere gratitude for your support of these faithful men, holy and zealous for the salvation of souls! When a Dominican brother makes his Solemn Profession (Solemn Vows), he is offering something to the Church and to you his life in service to Christ forever. Ordination, however, is different. In this situation, the Church offers something to the ordinandi: the office and ministry of deacon, priest or bishop. Whereas a priest is ordered, most importantly, to offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the deacon is ordered towards serving the priest and the people, and proclaiming the Gospel. You have been an integral part of leading these sons of St. Dominic towards the day of their ordination. Your prayers give them strength, and your donations sustain their life of prayer, study and preaching. When you support the Dominicans, you help make the ordination of great preachers possible. Pictured below are the newly-ordained deacons you supported this past year! Fr. Mark Padrez, O.P., Rev. Br. Christopher Wetzel, O.P., Rev. Br. Bradley Elliott, O.P., Most Reverend Jaime Soto, Rev. Br. Thomas Aquinas Pickett, O.P., and Rev. Br. Pius Youn, O.P. (l to r) Most Rev. Jaime Soto invokes the Holy Spirit during the Laying on of Hands, a ritual passed down to us from the Apostles. 4 MissionWest opwest.org

7 Dominican Colloquium Engages Scholars from Around the World Friends like you make it possible for us to share the Truth At the request of the Master of the Order of Preachers, and with help from friends like you, the Western Dominican Province and the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology recently held the second in a triennial series of colloquia, a vehicle through which we engage contemporary scholars with the truth of the Gospel. This recent colloquium, entitled Person, Soul, and Consciousness, explored contemporary insights on the reality of the soul, the nature of consciousness, and the meaning and value of human personhood; topics which have recently come into question due to modern advancements in science and technology. Religious and secular scholars from around the world came to St. Albert s for a threeday conference on personhood, soul and consciousness. Your generosity helped to make this important event possible by underwriting the cost of flying in scholars from around the world, providing lodging and food, and the supplies needed to host hundreds of people for a three-day academic conference. It may not seem like much, but it was critical help that allowed many important debates, conversations and insights to occur that otherwise would have been missed. Thank you! Thanks to you, this colloquium will bear fruit for years to come, generating more interest in the DSPT, increasing enrollment, and inspiring more scholars to defend the truth. Want to learn more about the 2017 Dominican Colloquium: Person, Soul and Consciousness? Visit DSPT President Fr. Peter Rogers, O.P., chats with a visiting scholar. The joy of the truth is contagious! Fr. Justin Gable, O.P., DSPT Professor and Colloquium Chair, welcomes attendees. Thank you for helping us share the truth with other scholars. Dominican Campus Ministry Continues to Make a Difference Thank you for helping us keep Christ on campus Friars, student leaders, and staff from the various campus ministries of the Western Province gathered this summer for the Dominican Institute of Student Ministry (DISM), where leaders shared best practices in campus ministry and evangelization. Because of you, we can continue to help young people embrace the Catholic faith as their own. CONNECT WITH US opwest.org MissionWest 7
8 FAITHFUL FRIENDS LIKE YOU A Profile in Generosity: Matt and Katie Eusterman Giving from the heart to build the Kingdom of God Matt and Katie Eusterman live with their four children in Vicenza, Italy, where Matt is stationed with the U.S. Army. Matt and Katie met in high school, then attended the University of Washington together. There, they found the Dominican-run Catholic Newman Center, and learned to embrace their faith. They have been long-time friends, volunteers and benefactors of the Dominicans. How did you get connected with the Dominicans? Long story short, the Catholic Newman Center at the University of Washington was the first and last building we set foot in during our four formative years of college. In those years, the Dominican charisms of preaching and hospitality invited us to more intimately encounter Jesus and surrender our lives to Him. It was also in this Spirit-filled Dominican ministry where God laid a foundation for our marriage. The Dominican Order s obedience to God s truth about marriage taught us the true identity of the Sacrament of Matrimony and how the Lord was calling us to Him through it. What s your favorite memory of working with Dominicans? Late one night, after volunteering at a fundraiser for the Newman Center, Fr. Steven Maekawa, the center s Director, invited a group of student volunteers to grab cheeseburgers at Dick s, an iconic burger joint. With bulging bags of greasy food in hand, Fr. Steve invited us all back to the Dominican Priory where we sat around and asked him theological questions into the early morning. It was wonderful. We are so grateful for how Dominicans are wholly present to those in need of salvation. in our faith as young Catholics to the outreach and preaching of Dominicans. We found this in Fr. Tom Kraft, Fr. Steve Maekawa, Fr. Vincent Benoit, Fr. Daniel Syverstad and many others. We want our support of the Dominicans to allow more college students and adults to be given the same uplifting support we were blessed to receive. Why do you think interest in the Dominicans is growing? In a culture that preaches relativism, self-service, and apathy, the Dominicans preach truth and invite everyone to know Truth, to know Christ. And the truth is becoming increasingly challenging to hear amidst the noise of our surroundings. The Dominicans are growing because their steadfast faithfulness to Truth meets the hunger of souls for this Truth. In short, faithfulness brings fruitfulness. Is there anything else you feel inspired to share? We have had the great joy of visiting the tomb of St. Dominic in Bologna. The most profound part of this visit came from the homily of the Dominican priest there. He reflected, St. Dominic refused to let his men go preach unless their words were supported by countless hours of prayer. The priority Dominicans place on prayer has allowed their words to remain faithful. Our family is forever indebted to the work the Lord has done through this devoted group of men. The Eustermans currently live in Italy, but continue to support the Dominicans here so college students have the resources they need to grow in their faith. Matt and Katie learned to embrace their faith as college students at the Dominican-run Catholic Newman Center in Seattle. During that time, Fr. Tom Kraft, O.P. ( ) was instrumental in their spiritual growth. Why do you choose to be monthly donors to the Dominicans? The Dominicans role in our lives has impacted us as students, married persons and parents. We owe much of the growth Want to become monthly donors, like Matt and Katie, and help the Dominicans preach the truth? GIFTS OF JUST $10/MONTH CAN MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE.
