This is also reflected in special projects and festivities conducted in our Learning Center. Last September we celebrated Buwan ng Wika with folk dances and colorful costumes. We also launched the yearlong project HIPHOP, a nationwide project of the department of education. Much love, creativity, time, and also resources were invested by the volunteers of the Hope Team in their 2018 project with the theme Precious. As they were blessing our children, they themselves were blessed in return. You can support IKP/PIKIFI through the purchase of our postal stamps, our handmade bath mats, or cards. The profit gained from the sell of these items fully benefits the people we serve, especially also the women of the Landfill Indigenous Women Association. Maybe this could be a good idea for Christmas gifts - check it out. We are happy to invite you to several benefit concerts and events taking place this coming November/December. Thomas Kellenberger will report on the latest developments and future plans of PIKI- FI (Philippine Island Kids Int l. Foundation, Inc.). For the first time, Virgelia Demata, Co-Founder and Executive Directress, will visit Switzerland and join Thomas during most of the events. From the bottom of our hearts we thank you for having stayed with us throughout 2018 and for continuously sharing in our joys and sorrows. The now ending year brought about many changes as well as new beginnings for our beneficiaries and for PIKIFI. This especially as we are trying to adapt to the ever-changing needs of the communities we serve. With unassuming confidence we are looking forward to the future, especially to the projects planned for We are excited to see how these will develop and once again bear fruit. 2 Thomas and Virgelia in Switzerland and Germany From November 5 until the beginning of December, Thomas Kellenberger and Virgelia Demata, Co-Founder and Executive Directress of PIKIFI, will be on a tour in Switzerland and Germany. The floor mats are woven by women from the waste picker community in Landfill. Their purchase helps the urban poor women to improve their living. The mats are made of cotton strips from used t-shirts and are available in various color combinations. Every floor mat is unique. Size: 35 x 55cm Price: CHF 20.- Washable at 40 C The floor mats are quite heavy and the transportation costs are high. Therefore, the mats must be picked up in Unterseen, Bern, Aarberg, Biel or Zürich. We also sell them during our benefit events. 4 The Hope Project 2018 More Precious than Diamonds I am alone, I m standing in the past, and I know that I am worth nothing that is the first phrase of our theme song Hope, which was written by Xandra, a former street kid. Unfortunately it is exactly what we experience over and over again when we walk through streets, markets, and slum areas here in the Philippines children who are convinced that they are worthless. During our 4th Hope Project we wanted the children to feel infinitely precious. To highlight our message, we once again made a photo shooting with every child. Due to a high and anonymous donation, we were able to give all of the 700 children, who were participating in our project, a special polaroid-photograph. We also took children from the slums in Agora to the beach, to let them feel how precious they are to us and for God. With 12 girls we enjoyed a unique shopping day! Mas bililhon ka kaysa diamonds! More precious than diamonds!. Therefore, we brought the children shiny (but false) diamonds and had them made a guess: how much would you need to pay for a real diamond? Only very few of them came close to the true value. Even small diamonds cost several thousand Euros. The most expensive diamond ever was sold for about 60 million Euros! Then we asked them the fundamental question: What do you think now is more worth, a diamond or you? Especially the younger children and the ones from the slums called aloud the diamond. They were all the more surprised when we told them that they are more worth than a lot of diamonds together (Bible in proverbs 3:15). However, the older children, who had been in school for some time and who already participated in our previous projects, called out me!. We took many wonderful memories with us! We got to know the children better and they have a place in our heart. We are already looking forward to see them again! 5 Buwan ng Wika This cultural event is celebrated every September and focuses on Filipino languages and traditions. Our students, of course, also participated in it. They performed folkdances in colorful and self-made costumes, made of recycled materials. The best costumes were awarded. In addition, the most outstanding students of the science-week received a certificate. Later on, Filipino games of old times were played, so that they would not fall into oblivion. It was fun for everyone, the children, the staff, and the visitors. PIKIFI is HIPHOP H onest I ndustrious P olite H elpful O bedient P - unctual PIKIFI participates in an annual project launched by the Department of Education. Out of each class children were selected, whose personalities have already shown at least one of the above listed values. They were asked to talk about these values. Various projects are designed to encourage the students to think about these important values and to develop them within their own personalities. Once again, we are grateful to our highly motivated teachers, who are the implementers of this project salamat kaayo! Colorful and self-made costumes

6 Free time and leisure projects Teachers also give their free time for the PIKIFI-children. One of them is teacher Metz. She conducts various projects with the children from the Children s Village, such as recreational activities during the summer holidays, art workshops, and individual reading. It is always great fun for everyone!

7 Kind regards from Julia Short before the editorial deadline, we received some pictures of Julia Tunayan. Three months after her major back surgery, she is doing very well. The breast- and cervical corset allows her to walk again. She has almost no pain anymore and together with her we are very grateful for this positive progress in her healing process.
