This Week at St. Stephen s Last week we had a successful house concert at St. Stephen s Live at Steve s Place featuring a barista, homemade desserts, and local musicians. We raised over $1200 for the Al Jbawi family, and had a lot of fun along the way. Now people are asking, When s the next one? So here s a thought. Why don t we have the next one at your place? That s right, a house concert with you as the hosts! Lynda Greuel, our event planner, has put together a detailed list of ideas and considerations, including the space you will need for the performers, how to set ticket prices, provisions for food and drink, and fundraising ideas. This is available in the narthex or on our web site. But think about it: your house, filled with friends, neighbours and family members, reclining around your back yard, or seated, crammed together, up the stairwell, all together to support a good cause, enjoying live music up close and personal, with you as the impresarios making it all happen. And there s no shortage of talent in this town, all itching for a place to perform where people are actually listening, and where they can try out new songs, or flog their most recent CD. If the event is a fundraiser you might get the artist to play for free, but provide them a place to sell their wares. The church, in its infancy, met in people s homes life-changing events in small spaces. Maybe it s time to return to our roots.

NeST Update 15 May 2018 NeST met with the Al Jbawi family on May 6 to discuss what will happen next in their settlement journey as we approach the end of our one-year sponsorship agreement. It was a very positive meeting with much to celebrate. Both parents are close to achieving a language benchmark that will qualify them for employment in Canada and Khalil has begun applying for carpentry jobs. NeST will begin to transition financial support. The children are doing well in school and the whole family has made astonishing progress in English language learning in the past 11 months. Classes for the adults will be ongoing but may move from full time to part time over the next few months to accommodate full time employment. Homework visits will be scaled back during Ramadan at the family s request, but may continue into the summer as more general literacy activities pending the family s and volunteers schedules. Or there may be more social visits! The family took an exciting step towards independence this week with the purchase of a 2004 Kia minivan from the proceeds of Khalil s part time restaurant job. They continue to express their gratitude to everyone for the help received thus far. They indicated their hope (echoed by NeSTvolunteers) that the friendships formed will continue well into the future. Diocesan Choirs Festival for 2019 Mark your calendars! Preliminary details of the 2019 event have been posted on the Cathedral website. Next year's event will take place on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at the Cathedral, and singers from across the diocese (whether active choir members or not) are invited to participate. Education for Ministry Graduation St. Stephen Church on Sunday, June 10 7:00 pm Mentors, students, past graduates and anyone interested in the Education for Ministry program are invited to join the EfM Community at a Eucharist celebration honoring three Graduates of the 2017/2018 program. I am (Neil Thompson) walking in the 9 th Annual Kidney March. In joining the Kidney March movement, I've agreed to walk 100 kilometres over 3 days and fundraise a minimum of $2,200. I can t do it alone though. Your cheers and well wishes mean a lot to me but very importantly I need your help to reach my fundraising goal. You can be a hero to the men, women and children who endure the hardships of kidney disease. It's a silent killer; most people don't know they have it until their kidneys are near failure. And once that happens, it's a fight for survival. I invite you to sponsor me in this movement, and to make a difference. I hope that you'll share this incredible adventure with me - by supporting me in my fundraising efforts. Donating online is quick, safe and secure, and fully tax-deductible. The net proceeds from the event support kidney disease prevention, services, research and organ donation. You can go the web site click on Sponsor a Walker and enter my name. Alternatively, you will find sponsor forms on the tables in the narthex of the Church. Thank you in advance for your support! Full on Bulletin board.

THE DAY of PENTECOST YEAR B READINGS Ezekiel 37:1-14 Psalm 104:24-34, 35b Acts 2:1-21 John 15:26-27, 16:4b-15 OPENING PRAYER Send down upon your people, O God, the enlivening flame of your Holy Spirit. Lend fire to our words and strength to our witness. Send us forth to proclaim with boldness your wondrous works; for we ask it in the name of your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ risen, ascended and glorified who lives and reigns with you and Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen. PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS Giver of life, receive all we offer you this day. Let the Spirit you bestow on your Church continue to shine in the world through the hearts of all who believe. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen. PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION O God of fire and of breath, may we who have been blessed by word and sacrament live in the unity of your Holy Spirit, and shine as light in the world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE DAY of PENTECOST YEAR B FIRST READING: Ezekiel 37:1-14 A Reading from the Book of Ezekiel. The hand of God was upon me, and carried me away by the spirit and set me down in the middle of a valley a valley full of bones. I was led up and down among them; and there was a vast number of them lying in the valley, and they were very dry. God said to me, "Mortal, can these bones live?" I answered, "O God, only you know." Then God said to me, "Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: 'O dry bones, hear the word of God. Thus says your God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am your God.'" So I prophesied as I had been commanded; and as I prophesied, suddenly there was a noise, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to bone. I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. Then God said to me, "Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: 'Thus says your God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.'" I prophesied as God commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood on their feet, a vast multitude. Then God said to me, "Mortal, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, 'Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are cut off completely.' Therefore prophesy, and say to them, 'Thus says your God: I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am your God, when I open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people. I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you on your own soil; then you shall know that I, your God, have spoken and will make all this happen," says our God.

THE DAY of PENTECOST YEAR B Listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Thanks be to God.

THE DAY of PENTECOST YEAR B PSALM 104:24-34, 35b O God, how many and diverse are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, creatures both small and great. There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, which you have made for the sport of it. All of them look to you to give them their food in due season. You give it to them, they gather it; you open your hand, and they are filled with good things. You hide your face, and they are terrified; you take away their breath, and they die and return to their dust. You send forth your Spirit, and they are created; and so you renew the face of the earth. Glory to our God forever! May you rejoice in all your creation! You look at the earth and it trembles; you touch the mountains and they smoke. I will sing to you as long as I live; I will praise you as long as I have my being. May these words of mine please you; I will always rejoice in you. Hallelujah!

THE DAY of PENTECOST YEAR B SECOND READING: Acts 2:1-21 A Reading from the Book of Acts When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, a tongue coming to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem, and at this sound they all gathered and were bewildered, because they heard them speaking in their own native languages. Amazed and astonished, they asked, "Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs in our own languages we hear them telling of God's deeds of power." All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, "What does this mean?" But some sneered and said, "They are drunk with new wine." So Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Judeans and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning! No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves, both men and women,

THE DAY of PENTECOST YEAR B in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of God s great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of our God shall be saved." Listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Thanks be to God.

THE DAY of PENTECOST YEAR B GOSPEL READING: John 15:26-27, 16:4b-15 The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to Thee, O Lord. God be with you. And also with you. The Good News of Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus said to the disciples, "When the Advocate comes, the Spirit of Truth who will be sent to you from the Father whom I myself will send from the Father this Advocate will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. "I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. Now I am going to the One who sent me; yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?' But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send the Advocate to you who, coming into your midst, will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgement: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgement, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of Truth comes, you will be guided into all truth; for the Spirit will not speak of its own accord, but will speak what is heard, and will declare to you the things that are to come. This will glorify me, because what is mine will be taken and revealed to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that what is mine will be taken and revealed to you." The Gospel of Christ. Praise be to Thee, O Christ. The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Worship for The DAY of PENTECOST May 20, 2018 The Feast of Pentecost, occurring fifty days after Easter, is considered the birthday of the Church. The coming of the Holy Spirit into the midst of the apostles turned them from fearful followers of Jesus to bold proclaimers of the Good News. We celebrate the powerful presence of God s Spirit in our own midst, who sends us out into the world as witnesses of God s love. The HOLY EUCHARIST with Baptism The Reverend Brian E Pearson, Preacher & Presider The Reverend Charmaine Evans, Deacon Jeffrey Jones, Organist & Music Director The Gathering of the Community We gather, greet one another, and prepare for worship. Prelude: Bell Voluntary (James Patten) Welcome and opening announcements Greeting God's love has been poured into our hearts. We dwell in God, and God in us. We prepare for worship by taking a few quiet moments to reflect upon the state of our life and of the world this day. Give thanks to God and call upon God's name; Make known God's saving deeds among all peoples. Sing to God, sing praises to our God, And make known all God's marvellous works! Opening Hymn: Wind Who Makes All Winds That Blow 1

Opening Prayer (the congregation remains standing) Send down upon us, O God, the enlivening flame of your Holy Spirit. Amen. The Opening Prayer, called a Collect, collects the prayers of the individual worshipers and identifies a theme or themes heard in today s service. The Proclamation of the Word We hear again the Christian story and respond with our prayers and intentions. First Reading: Ezekiel 37:1-14 Psalm 104:25-34, 35b O God, how many and diverse are your works! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. read by Jennifer Garrison Through the words of scripture we recall the story of the coming of God s Spirit. Yonder is the great and wide sea with its living things too many to number, creatures both small and great. There move the ships, and there is that Leviathan, which you have made for the sport of it. All of them look to you to give them their food in due season. You give it to them, they gather it; you open your hand, and they are filled with good things. 2

Hallelujah! Second Reading: Acts 2:1-21 read by Jennifer Garrison Sequence Hymn: Like the Murmer of the Dove s Song Gospel Reading: John 20:19-23 Before the Reading: God be with you. And also with you. The Good News of Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. We stand for the gospel reading out of special reverence for stories concerning Jesus life and teachings. Sermon After the Reading: The Gospel of Christ. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Anthem: Come, Holy Spirit (Victor C. Johnson) 3

Baptismal Hymn: Baptized in Water The Sacrament of Baptism We welcome a new member of the Church as we express, with outward signs of water, oil and light, God s love and acceptance of us all. Presentation and Examination of Candidates The Candidate for Holy Baptism will now be presented. The parents and sponsors present the candidates, saying: We present N to receive the sacrament of Holy Baptism. The priest addresses the congregation: Faith is the gift of God to the people of God. Baptism is an outward sign of this gift, marking the beginning of a lifelong journey of faith. People of God, will you welcome these children and uphold them in their new life in Christ? We will. The priest addresses the parents and sponsors: Parents and godparents, the Church receives these children with joy, trusting God for their growth in faith. Will you pray for them, care for them, and help them to take their place within the life and worship of Christ s Church? We will. An individual s faith is lived out within a community of faith. Therefore the community is asked to receive and to support its newest member. The congregation can play a supportive role in the Christian upbringing of a child. But the key role is that played by the parents. Will you by your prayers and example walk with these children in the way of faith, helping them to grow into the full stature of Christ? We will. In baptism God calls us out of darkness into God s own marvellous light. Following Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore I ask you: 4

Do you renounce Satan, the evil powers of this world, and the sinful desires that separate you from God and neighbour? I renounce them. Do you turn to Jesus Christ, put your whole trust in his grace and love, and promise to obey him as your Lord? I do. Prayers for the Candidate The Christian life is marked by a daily turning (or conversion ) from the dark powers that oppose God toward Jesus Christ, the Light of the World. Let us now pray for these persons who are to receive the sacrament of new birth. Deliver them, O Lord, from the way of sin and death. Lord, hear our prayer. Open their hearts to your grace and truth. Lord, hear our prayer. Fill them with your holy and life-giving Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer. Teach them to love others in the power of the Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer. Send them into the world in witness to your love. Lord, hear our prayer. Bring them to the fullness of your peace and glory. Lord, hear our prayer. Grant, O God, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and forever. Amen. 5

Thanksgiving over the Water The priest pours water into the font and blesses it, saying: God be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to God our Creator. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Water figures prominently in the story of God s people, as recounted briefly here. We thank you, almighty God, for the gift of water that sustains and nourishes all living things. Blessed be God for ever. Over water your Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through water you led your people out of slavery to freedom in the Promised Land. In water your Son Jesus was baptized by John and anointed as the Christ by your Holy Spirit, leading us from death to new life. Blessed be God for ever. We thank you for the water of baptism by which we share in Christ s death and resurrection, through which we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Blessed be God for ever. We thank you for calling N. to new life through the waters of baptism. Now sanctify this water that your servants who are washed in it may be renewed in your image to walk in the light of faith and continue for ever in the risen life of Christ our Saviour; to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be all honour and glory. Blessed be God for ever. Amen. 6

The Baptismal Covenant Let us join with those who are committing themselves to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Faith is partly a matter of belief, affirming the community s knowledge and experience of God, as reflected here in the words of the Apostles Creed. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in God the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil and whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the good news of God in Christ? I will, with God s help. 7 But even more, faith is a way of life, following Christ in a life that reflects God s love; hence these affirmations about how we are to live out our faith.

Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbour as yourself? I will, with God s help. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will with God s help. Will you strive to safeguard the integrity of God s creation, and respect, sustain and renew the life of the Earth? I will, with God s help. The Baptism The priest pours water on each candidate, saying: N, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The priest makes the sign of the cross, saying: I sign you with the cross, and mark you as Christ s own forever. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon these your servants the forgiveness of sin, and have raised them to the new life of grace. Sustain them O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. This ancient ritual reflects both the Jewish practice of purification and the new interpretation given it by the followers of Jesus, that is, as a sign of the new life in Christ. The Giving of the Light The priest presents each of the newly baptized with a candle. Receive the light of Christ, to show that you have passed from darkness to light. Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. 8 Jesus told his disciples they were to be the light of the world, a commandment that is recalled

Let us welcome the newly baptized. We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. here. Prayers of the People (the congregation standing) led by Ian Moore The Peace God s peace be always with you. And also with you. The People greet one another with a gesture of friendship. Offertory Hymn: She Flies On Prayer over the Gifts The Celebration of the Eucharist We give thanks for Christ s sacrificial love shown on the cross by which we are spiritually fed. O God, the giver of life, receive all we offer you this day. Let the Spirit you bestow on your Church continue to shine in the world through the hearts of all who believe. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen. Eucharistic Prayer God be with you. And also with you. The Prayers of the People bring the concerns of our hearts to God. Christians have passed the Peace' with one another since biblical times. Symbols of our daily lives are offered for God s blessing bread and wine for communion, and money for the ongoing witness and ministry of the Church. Eucharist is the Greek word for thanksgiving. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to God. Let us give thanks to God our Creator. 9

It is right to give our thanks and praise. We give you thanks and praise, O God, that after ascending to your right hand, your Son Jesus Christ, our Lord, sent forth your holy and life-giving Spirit; that through her glorious power the joy of the everlasting gospel might go forth into all the world. Accept our praises, O God, as we follow the example of your Son and obey his command: who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. At the heart of the Christian story is Jesus death for our sake, which is recounted here. In the same way, after supper, he took the cup and gave you thanks; he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me. Grant, O God, that by the power of your Holy Spirit these gifts of bread and wine may be to us Christ s body and blood. Accept through him, our great high priest, this our sacrifice of thanks and praise: renew us by your Holy Spirit, inspire us with your love, and unite us in the body of your Son. We Join our voices with angels and archangels, 10

and with all the company of heaven, who proclaim the glory of your name, forever praising you and singing: Holy, holy, holy, Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blest is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Our praises on earth join those being offered continually in the heavenly realm, celebrating what is known as the "communion of saints". The Lord s Prayer As our Saviour taught us, let us pray (saying): Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. The Lord s Prayer is so called because the Gospels record Jesus teaching this prayer to his disciples. Breaking of the Bread Invitation Lord, we died with you on the cross. Now we are raised to new life. We were buried in your tomb. Now we share in your resurrection. Live in us, that we may live in you. The gifts of God for the People of God. Thanks be to God! 11 All who love and

Communion (please remember to SIP not DIP) Prayer after Communion (all standing) serve God are welcome to come forward to receive communion, or to receive a blessing. Holy One, may we who have received this Eucharist live in the unity of your Holy Spirit, and shine as a light in the world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Anthem: Fill-a Me Up! (Pepper Choplin) Doxology Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen A doxology is a prayer of praise, in this case a final one, drawing our worship to a close.
