Letter from the Pastor: It Isn t Mine! I once received in the diocesan chancery a correspondence from a gentleman expressing concerns about what was allegedly going on at Mass in his parish. He wanted the alleged liturgical abuses to stop so that they wouldn t disturb MY Mass. (emphasis his) The Eucharist belongs to the Church. While the gentleman was right in pointing out that the priest had no right to do with the Mass what he pleases, he was wrong in referring to the Eucharist as 2025 Stuart Avenue Baton Rouge, LA MY Mass. The Mass doesn t belong to him any more than it belongs to the priests. None of us can refer to any Mass as my Mass. We humans learn at an early age to say mine. Just watch young children! We claim possession of toys, material things, success, another s love and affection, even another person. The spiritual journey to wholeness is the process of unlearning this claim and of becoming more and more aware that I don t really possess or own anything, that all is entrusted to me for a while to serve God and others. That s why the Scripture begins with this reminder in Genesis: God creates all things and gifts them to us. We take nothing; we receive everything. The spirituality of consecrated life nudges religious women and men toward this lifestyle : to live with the constant awareness that all is gift so that one gladly becomes dispossessed in order to live more fully for God and others, giving freely what one has freely received. Stewardship, before it s a program or a strategy, is a spirituality in which we are all called to live out in our ordinary lives what the religious NON-PROFIT ORG. You will receive a quick response from the chairman or chairwoman, who will be able to access the information on sign-up from his/her computer 24/7. All information on your ministries has been erased from our database in preparation for the new system. Everyone must sign up to participate this year, even if you have participated in a ministry for 25 years! men and women highlight in a special way in their consecrated lives. Stewardship isn t primarily about the needs of the parish as much as about our needs to live the Christian truth. It isn t primarily about giving money or time to a cause as much as being true to who we are: grateful recipients of God s goodness. Viewed as such, stewardship isn t an option. The choice isn t so much whether I want to show my gratitude with my financial gifts, my time, and my prayer. The choice is how to do them in such a way as to enable me to become what God calls me to be. Continued on page 5 As we renew or make commitment to stewardship of ministry, may I suggest that you not just immediately check off the ministries you like or those that promote your cause or agenda. Rather, take a little time to pray and ask yourself what ministries would best enable you to serve God and others, what ministries would most stretch you and help you to grow, what ministries would further strengthen your spirituality. 2 Communications Committee: Informing Parishioners By Rebecca Maher The St. Aloysius Communications Committee is a ministry that provides technical and creative support to the parish and school in areas such as website, social media, graphics, bulletin and other publications and brochures. The Communications Committee serves the parishioners, external and prospective, and the general public, by working to provide efficient, transparent and timely information to interested stakeholders, utilizing all appropriate channels of communication available to the parish. For example, a branding standards manual was created for the church, school and childcare center to create a consistent look across all channels. The websites are being redesigned to communicate more effectively. A Facebook page was created to communicate, update and notify its followers of the happenings of Aloysius Church. The committee includes photographers, writers, project managers and creative professionals. What kind of time commitment does it require? Depending on the task or project, the time commitment can vary. Some projects require ongoing maintenance and management. Leadership skills, project management and the ability to communicate and facilitate the appropriate persons to get the task completed. Cantera Mission: Building Dreams By Alvin Raetzsch and who does your ministry Cantera is a Nicaraguan nonprofit founded in 1988 by Sisters of St. Agnes Anabel Torres. Sr. Dianne Fanguay, a former member of St. Aloysius Church, has been a part of Cantera for more than 20 years. It was through her request and a presentation to Fr. Than Vu and the Social Responsibility Commission that St. Aloysius became involved in Cantera as an international mission. Cantera s mission has been to contribute to the construction of a new society where women and men play a leading role in their own development and destiny. Cantera collaborates in building a more unified society, one that is more human, more equitable and sustainable -- one that is enriched by diversity. With Building Dreams as its motto, Cantera offers programs and activities such as sports, art, music, dance, theater and sustainable agriculture, including beekeeping and honey production. Cantera s vision is dependent on long-term support from parishes like St. Aloysius, through a personal, human-to-human interaction. As a ministry we seek to live out many of the Catholic Social Teachings such as Life and Dignity of the Human Person, Rights and Responsibilities, Options for the Poor and Vulnerable and Solidarity, which is an ideal match for the goals of both St. Aloysius and Cantera. St. Aloysius has sent two groups to Cantera, one last November and the other in May of this year. In May, we had the opportunity to meet with the teens of San Judas for the second time and listen to their dreams. They so eloquently and passionately expressed their dream to have a place to meet together off the streets to carry on the youth activities they have organized. These amazing youth have experienced hardships for 11 years in finding places to meet. We as parishioners of St. Aloysius have the opportunity to help these dreams come true. During this trip we were asked by the leaders of Cantera if our parish was interested in being an integral part of the search and development of a center for the San Judas Youth Group. This is a unique opportunity to create a lasting bond between the people of Cantera and the people of St. Aloysius Parish. As we continue the mission trips to Nicaragua, we will have the opportunity to help with the development through clearing the lot, planning, painting and even building the facility. We would be working side by side with the families of San Judas to help build their dreams through the creation of a youth center they can call their own. This project will grow as their dreams grow! How many participate in the mission group? I chair the organization with Amy Pizzolato. We have a number of people, both parishioners and nonparishioners, who support the mission here locally and some of whom have gone to Nicaragua. As many as nine spots are available for those wishing to travel to Cantera. We can also use volunteers to assist with planning and other preparation needs for the mission trip. What kind of time commitment does it require? Meetings are held several times a year. Everyone is invited and welcome to attend the meetings, even to just gather information, listen to the stories and see pictures of the work that is being done. Mission trips are scheduled twice a year, depending on the number of participants and the work schedule. Each trip lasts one week. Anyone attending is required to be 18 years or older and provide their own airfare. Spiritual Faith and Rediscovering Faith: This mission is very unique in that its work and product are of a very personal nature. It is not just a place we go to build and give away stuff. We go and experience each other to build bridges of understanding between people of different cultures and privileges. Each day we begin by reading the Bible and thinking about what we can bring to help those in Cantera. The group reads reflections together and each person is encouraged to individually reflect. Those who have attended the mission trip have all said that it is a spiritual experience like no other they have ever had. It is wonderful to experience the people and work with them to help socially build their community. One of the most beautiful consequences of the relationship with these people is that we can come home and be an extension of Cantera, planting our own seeds of positive personal and community transformation here at home within our own families and communities. In essence, this ministry s mission is to socially experience the people of Nicaragua and work with them in social building of their community, and help them change their lives by using our skills to aid them in realizing their own dreams! 3 Youth Group Ministry: Youth Leadership Team By Paul Lewis How can service help others to rediscover their faith? Service helps others to find God and rediscover their faith by working with His people. I say definitely at least try a year of service and see how you like it. Most likely, you won t like it, you ll love it. Do the service you want to do. There can never be enough people in your ministry. The Youth Group Ministry promotes spiritual growth and guidance for the youth of the parish. I specifically work with the Youth Leadership Team. As a part of YLT, I am very involved in the St. Aloysius Youth Group and help plan all of the Life Nights and junior High Youth Group events. We have meetings once a month so we can stay updated and continue to plan the events. What drew you to participate in I have been involved with the Youth Group from the moment I was age eligible. I had noticed in junior High Youth Group that there were older kids running the events. Later, in high school, I noticed older kids were also running the Life Nights, so I found out more about it. People started telling me I should get involved, and I really did feel called to do it. It seemed really fun, and I like getting to be a leader in the youth group. How many participate on your This year, there are going to be about 30 high school students on the team. Last year, there were around 20. My sophomore year, there were about 45 people who participated. What kind of time commitment does it require? Being on YLT requires quite a lot of commitment. We have meetings on the first Tuesday of every month. As a member of the Servant Team, I am expected to attend 75 percent of the Life Nights. The SALT team, which plans the Junior High events, is asked to attend at least half of the Life Nights. Finally, it s best to be involved in the trips and other events offered by the Youth Group. required and/or provided for The Youth Leadership Team requires two days of YLT Training from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Members are also asked to attend the YLT Retreat at the end of summer. Finally, students must be a rising sophomore-senior to be on YLT. you rediscover your faith? Working with the YLT has helped me grow in my faith so much. It has shown me how to act as God would want a teenager to act. It has helped me shape my morals. I have made a countless number of extremely close friends who believe in the same things I do and want to carry out their lives in the same way I want to. I have found God through being on YLT. I have found my own faith. I realized everyone has a different faith life, and serving on YLT has definitely helped a ton in finding my faith. I have found myself and how I like spend time with God. I know that I always try my hardest to not sin and do what God wants me to do. So, I just take that and try my hardest when I work. Also, I don t want to cheat anybody I work for, so if I try my hardest and am honest, I won t be cheating anyone. How can someone get involved with this ministry? Only high school students are eligible to be involved in YLT. To get involved, they have to first be involved in SAS Youth Group, and then they have to be at least a rising sophomore. An official application is required and is available in the spring. Once the application is turned in, applicants are asked to personally interview with MacDougall Womack and others on the Adult Core Team. "Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good." 1 Corinthians 12:4-7 Youth Group Ministry Adult Core Team By Julie Liberto you rediscover your faith? Helping these kids look at their faith, and answering the questions they have about their faith and my faith, has helped me to evaluate my own faith and grow stronger with God. The youth of our parish are incredibly inspiring and I admire their faith and prayer lives. What drew you to participate in My own experience with youth ministry in middle and high school was such a positive one that when I decided to get involved, youth ministry seemed like the perfect fit for me. How has your faith inspired your work? My faith is the reason I do my service. I found my faith and who I am in my faith when I was in high school, and the adults involved in youth ministry where a big part of that. Having good Christian Catholic role models made me who I am today. I hope that I can be as inspiring to the youth, as all the adults were to me. High school is an especially important time in our faith, and having positive role models is so important. rediscover their faith? For me, service has definitely helped me rediscover my faith. Volunteering with the church is so fun for me and helps to form a sense of community throughout the parishioners. When I began volunteering with the high school youth group, I never realized that I would rediscover my faith and my relationship with God in a much deeper way! Volunteering with my husband has also helped to bring us closer together in our marriage and in our faith. I would tell someone who is considering service to look through the directory and see what appeals to them most. If someone is not a good fit, there are so many options of service in our church. There are also options outside of the church. No matter what you are interested in, there is always some type of service to others you will be interested in and enjoy doing. There are about 15 to 20 adult core team members for the youth group. What kind of time commitment does it require? The group meets about 4 to 6 times per month, depending on what is going on that month. Throughout the school year, there are about two high school youth group meetings per month, and one middle school youth group meeting every month or so. Additionally, once a month there is a youth leadership team meeting that the core team attends. Throughout the rest of the year, there are other events such as retreats and trips. In youth ministry, we are always having meetings to help and inform us on how to handle youth situations and be as effective core team members as we can possibly be. The wonderful thing about these meetings is the ability to use the group as a resource and bounce ideas off each other. Every child is different and should be treated differently according to their personality, so it is nice to have other adults to help problem solve and get advice from. How can someone get involved with this ministry? To volunteer or get involved with the St. Aloysius Youth Group, please contact the church office or MacDougall Womack, the youth minister at St. Aloysius. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness. Romans 12:6-8 Prison Ministry: Sharing the Faith By Thomas Telhiard What drew you to participate in your ministry? I could feel an itching in my heart, that it was time to get out of my comfort zone. The joy of celebrating weekly Mass with the community made me feel like I wanted to do more, or at least to share more. So, after a stewardship weekend, I decided to look into the Dixon Correctional Institute Prison Ministry. After a very inspiring and honest telephone conversation with Jeanie Bondy, and hearing how excited she was about her own involvement in the ministry, I knew I needed to try it. and who does your ministry The DCI ministry serves to reach out to the inmates at the prison facility by sharing Scripture and celebrating Communion services and Mass celebrations with them. Volunteers from St. Aloysius, in conjunction with volunteers from St. Alphonsus, participate in this humbling and rewarding ministry by traveling to Jackson, La., (approximately 30 minutes) each Friday evening. What kind of time commitment does it require? The time commitment, given the number of volunteers we have, is Rediscovering Our Gifts From God Through Stewardship Rediscovering, From Page 1 approximately three hours once every four weeks. Other than an annual orientation that is scheduled on several Saturday mornings throughout the year, there is no prerequisite for participating in this wonderful ministry. Is there any special training required and/or provided for The only requirement is the ability to listen with compassion and share when you feel prompted. There is no teaching involved. The ministry is about being present to the inmates and sharing the Gospel story with them by breaking open the Scriptures. The appreciation you will experience for just being there with the inmates is something that will truly amaze you. you rediscover your faith? The enlivened communal spirit at St. Aloysius Parish has pushed me forward and outward. The humility I have experienced as well as the appreciation I have felt in this ministry has truly been a rediscovery of community discipleship Review the Ministry Handbook mailed to your home for descriptions and details of each ministry. Be sure to keep the handbook on hand during the year because it contains a parishioner family directory. Look for the new Stewardship pamphlet at Church, The Heart that Gives, and read it to learn more about the seven traits of joyful stewardship. We encourage you to rediscover your gifts from God through Stewardship. Stewardship offers us a plan for using our gifts to serve God and the world. When you finish the pamphlet, pass it on to a family member or a friend. It takes all of us to build the kingdom of God. We request that all parishioners ages 10 and up sign up for a ministry online during Stewardship of Ministry promotion. Committee members will be available during the Aug. 17 ministry fair with laptop computers to sign up members who do not have access and fellowship for me. It has deeply enriched my prayer life on both a personal and communal level. The diversity of the volunteers and the appreciation of the inmates has been a reward much greater than any gift I had expected. Truly, service always ends up being a gift to all involved. I would encourage anyone who has even considered, and even anyone who has not, to try this ministry. You will not be disappointed. In fact, this ministry will surprisingly complement and enliven your experience of community faith life. As with so many service ministries, the one ministering is always ministered to as well. This is how the Spirit of Christ seems to work. How can someone get involved with this ministry? Again, I cannot say enough about how the DCI ministry has deepened my personal and communal faith and prayer life, and enabled me, in some small way perhaps, to share with my incarcerated brothers the peace and love of Christ! to computers. We need you to help us in our mission to embrace and nurture all, inspiring each person to act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly in the love of God. 4 Community Life Commission: Serving Parishioners By Scott Ritter you rediscover your gifts from God? Tough question! The best part about service is the connection that I get from serving with fellow parishioners. On the Community Life Commission we spend a lot of time working to facilitate some of the more fun events on campus. I have been able to meet new people within the church community that I wouldn t have been able to meet under normal circumstances. and who does your ministry I serve as the co-chair of the Community Life commission. Recently, along with Claire Grandy and Kathy Screen, I was asked to help put together the St Aloysius Feast Day celebration. This weekend event last June was a tremendous success in building fellowship within the St Aloysius Parish community. All while educating the parish into the wonder and mystery of our patron saint. Our committee participation varies from a few on the leadership side to many on the volunteer side. We have people who help with setup and decorations the day before and the day of the event. We also have volunteers who help clean up during and after the event. Volunteers also help during the event with serving soft drinks and adult beverages. This year, we had great participation from the Knights of Columbus in meal prep, along with tasty treats from WalkOns catering. It is truly a team effort. What kind of time commitment does it require? The time commitment is completely dependent upon the volunteer. It can be a few hours on one day or long-term commitment in overall strategic planning. What advice do you have for others who are considering My advice to anyone looking to serve is to stop talking about it and do it! You may find that it only takes a few hours to realize that your connection to your parish and fellow parishioners can be very rewarding and a great way to get your family more connected to your parish! 5 LSU Lunch Bunch: Serving the College Community By Leigh Anne Baker The LSU Lunch Bunch is an outreach ministry for the St. Aloysius Catholic Church. The LSU Lunch Bunch has been serving the LSU community since 2001 at the LSU Catholic Center by taking turns with other sponsors to provide a meal once a week to all who care to come. The menu has traditionally included BBQ beef sandwiches, salad, baked beans and our famous homemade desserts. This year we are trying something new. At the request of the Christ the King Catholic Center, we will be preparing homemade lasagna, along with salad and our famous desserts. Individuals are needed to prepare desserts, run errands to pick up supplies, prepare menu items (both beforehand and the day of), and/or serve food on the day of the event. We realize that many of the volunteers may be busy parents and/or professionals. There are opportunities of varying degrees of commitment that fit into almost any schedule that you can participate in by volunteering for this ministry. you rediscover your gifts from God? Serving on the St. Aloysius LSU Lunch Bunch committee has helped me to discover that I can cook things I never thought I could! My husband does 99 percent of the cooking at home so volunteering over seven years ago to cook the pulled beef for the sandwiches was a huge undertaking for me. The LSU Lunch Bunch committee made it so easy by providing all of the ingredients (via Matherne s) and a simple recipe to follow. The LSU Lunch Bunch serves college students at LSU who attend Mass and other events at Christ the King Catholic Center. They invite their non- Catholic friends to enjoy a hot meal as well. On average, there are students who benefit from the free lunch each Thursday and during finals provided by area Catholic church parishes, as well as Knights of Columbus councils. We are in need of many volunteers to make the LSU Lunch Bunch a success. We need 15 volunteers to make two pans of lasagna each, several volunteers to pick up other items (like salad and bread) at area businesses, and about volunteers to make two dozen desserts each. What kind of time commitment does it require? Time is precious to us all and we know that some can give several hours the day of the event and others can give only the time it takes to bake a batch of cookies. The LSU Lunch Bunch has many different ways that you can volunteer, so contact us today to see how you can get involved! There is no special training required. Lasagna volunteers will need to follow a simple recipe provided by the committee. All ingredients will be provided by Matherne s and paid for by the parish so no money comes out-of-pocket for the lasagna. Picking up items and baking desserts do not require special training just a little love to make those cookies taste oh, so good! College life was a wonderful time for me and I am so happy to provide for a ministry that I benefited from as a college student. That s why I come back year after year and volunteer with the LSU Lunch Bunch. rediscover their faith? What advice do you have for others who are considering If you are interested in giving back to a younger generation of college students who may not have a hot meal to eat, join the LSU Lunch Bunch committee. If you want to provide a service to the Church that doesn t require much time or money, join the LSU Lunch Bunch committee. If you want to meet other church members like yourself who love to cook, serve and bring smiles to hungry eyes, join the LSU Lunch Bunch! How can someone get involved with this ministry? Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ.
