1 PETER: LIVING IN THE REAL WORLD We are structuring our Bible studies around the acronym BEAM. B BIBLICAL. Our starting point is the Bible. It is here that we learn what we are to believe concerning God and what God requires of man. Each genre requires a different approach, so you will notice tables on the following pages to help guide your study. E ENGAGING. We believe that only the gospel can make you whole; therefore, we want to engage the whole person. In this section we will take the information you have gathered through Bible study and help apply it to the needed areas of your life. A ACCOUNTABLE. (Ephesians 5:21; 1 Peter 5:5; 1 Thessalonians 5:11) Accountability to God and to one another according to Scripture s direction is the foundation for freedom and liberty. By accountability, we are not talking about legalism or manipulation. Rather, by accountability we mean developing relationships with other people to promote godly living, a desire to pursue God, and the freedom to share those successes and failures with one another. M MISSIONAL. We are a sent people (missio Dei sending of God). To be missional means to be sent to the world. As disciples, we are to carry the gospel into every area of our lives. We may engage our culture through service projects or intentionally sharing our faith or simply building relationships through which the gospel can be seen in a non-christian culture. The goal for every Christian is to be a mature disciple of Jesus Christ. So as we study the Bible, Engage the text, desire to be Accountable with one another, then, we are ready to be on Mission for God s kingdom (BEAM). Missional living follows discipleship, so the goal for our community groups is discipleship producing a sent people. 2 1 Peter: Living in the Real World
1 PETER: LIVING IN THE REAL WORLD The author of 1 Peter is the one known as the Apostle Peter. The Apostle seeks to encourage and reassure Christian churches in Asia Minor as stormy seasons of persecution begin. Similar storms are faced today and therefore, this pastoral letter has much to teach and encourage us. This letter was likely written around 63, after Paul s departure and before Nero s persecution. The heart of Peter s letter is to comfort struggling believers and offer the hope of the gospel. He desires the reader to know the witness is true and Jesus Christ is real. Peter has tasted that the Lord is good, and that his goodness will not fail. (Adapted from Edmund Clowney The Message of 1 Peter Introduction) OUTLINE OF THE STUDY I. 1 Peter 1:1-12 A Living Hope II. 1 Peter 1:13-25 The Believer s Identity III. 1 Peter 2:1-12 Living Stones IV. 1 Peter 2:13-25 Submission, Part 1 V. 1 Peter 3:1-12 Submission, Part 2 VI. 1 Peter 3:13-22 Submission, Part 3 VII. 1 Peter 4 Self controlled and Sober minded VIII. 1 Peter 5 Clothed in Humility HOW TO USE THIS BOOK All of the New Testament letters or epistles have unique characteristics. They include an opening greeting (often including a prayer); second, the body of the letter; and finally, a closing (often including personal details). Within this general form is packaged the powerful gospel teaching that presents the Lord Jesus Christ as the fulfillment of all the Scriptures and the salvation of the world, the one in whom we are called to live, until he comes again. In this study, the goal each week is to finish the B and E sections prior to the study. During your study you will primarily discuss E, A, and M. We are not expecting your group to complete each element every time you meet, rather they should serve as a guide to help direct your group. (Contributions from Kathleen Nielson s Bible Study: Following the Ways of the World) 1 Peter: Living in the Real World 3
1 Peter Introduction Bible Study Underline all verbs. A verb is a word or group of words used to indicate either that an action takes place ( I urge you ) or that a state or condition exists ( such is the will of God ). Verbs are often the most significant indicators of the author s flow of thought. Circle key words or phrases. These are words or short phrases that are important theologically (like Bore our sins in His body in 2:24) or thematically set the theme or main idea for the passage (like submissive in 3:1-6). Box connecting words. These important words indicate the logical connection between words, phrases, and clauses. Here are three types of common connecting words to look for: 1. Comparison: either points out similarities between two or more related ideas or simply joins like ideas. Comparison words include: and, like, as, just as, also, so also, even so. (e.g., arm yourselves also with the same purpose 4:1). 2. Contrast: points out dissimilarities between ideas. Contrast words include: but, rather, yet, however (e.g. they malign you but they will give account to Him 4:4-5). 3. Purpose: indicates that the intended goal of an idea or action, whether or not it was realized. Purpose words include: that, so that, in order that (e.g., the gospel has been preached that they may live in the spirit 4:6). Summary Statement: In one to two sentences please summarize the passage. 4 1 Peter: Living in the Real World
Week 1 Engagement We believe that only the gospel can make you whole; therefore, we want to engage the whole person. In this section we will take the information you have gathered through Bible study and help apply it to the needed areas of your life. Accountability (Ephesians 5:21; 1 Peter 5:5; 1 Thessalonians 5:11) Accountability to God and to one another according to Scripture s direction is the foundation for freedom and liberty. By accountability, we are not talking about legalism or manipulation. Rather, by accountability we mean developing relationships with other people to promote godly living, a desire to pursue God, and the freedom to share those successes and failures with one another. Mission We are a sent people (missio Dei sending of God). 1 Peter: Living in the Real World 5

Week 2 Engagement What do we learn from this passage about: 1. God 2. Mankind 3. Sin 4. Salvation 5. Christ Respond Personally Is there a command to obey? Where in my life do I need to apply this command? Respond to Broader Culture Reflect on insights concerning God, Mankind, Sin, and Fall and identify an area that would conflict with a Non-Christian world-view. State their position and discuss the biblical position. Accountability In these hardening times, some of us will be tempted to compromise what we believe in order to fit in or to avoid suffering, while others of us will be tempted to bemoan all that is wrong with our world and long nostalgically for a better time, long-forgotten. (Juan R. Sanchez, 1 Peter For You, Bloomington, IN: The Good Book Company, 2016) Are you more naturally a compromiser or a bemoaner? How might you need to challenge yourself? Mission Thomas Rainer conducted a poll recently to see what church leaders and church members thought of this trend. His specific question was: Why do you think many churches aren t as evangelistic as they once were? Comment on the top answer. Christians have no sense of urgency to reach lost people. 1 Peter: Living in the Real World 7

Where in my life do I need to apply this command? Respond to Broader Culture Reflect on insights concerning God, Mankind, Sin, and Fall and identify an area that would conflict with a Non-Christian Worldview. State their position and discuss the biblical position. Accountability Think of an area of your conduct where you often fail to obey God. Can you discern how your thinking, and your choice of what to hope in, might be askew, which leads to that disobedience? Mission Returning to Rainer s poll from last week. Please comment on the second top answer. Many Christians and church members do not befriend and spend time with lost people. 1 Peter: Living in the Real World 9
