FAITH MATTERS August 2015 A monthly publication of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota FROM THE PASTOR Kelly Chatman In This Issue Black Lives Matter 3 Northside Leaders 7 Open Mic Night 9 Calendar 11 Advent "I'll tell you what keeps me coming to this church," she said, as every head in the assembly turned to look in her direction. The rush of interest caused her to hesitate, suddenly uncertain of her own thought, but she pushed on. "It's strange, I know, but I get the feeling here, like nowhere else, that something is about to happen." Have you ever had that feeling that something is going to happen? You don t know when, but you can feel it right around the corner. Like the feelings you may have had as a child at Christmas, or when you first smelled that your mother was cooking a special meal. I recall a similar feeling of nervousness and anticipation when we played sports and I would wait until I was selected to play on one of the teams. We have entered into the season of our church year defined by this feeling of anticipation. Advent is the time when we celebrate that The kingdom of God is at hand... The stars will fall from heaven... The night is far gone... They will see the Son of God coming in clouds with great power and glory... This age is passing away... Come, Lord, Jesus." This is the season when the church lives on tiptoes, straining toward the horizon, waiting for something amazing to happen. I love this season, and the feelings of belonging and anticipation that come with it. Like the generations who have gone before us, we enter Advent with expectation and hope. Advent carries with it the promise of redemption that God offers to all creation. As people of God who celebrate this season from beginning to end, we embody hope. Christmas Worship Services Christmas Eve Service: Thursday, December 24th at 7:30p.m. No worship service on Christmas Day Friday, December 25th. Throughout the four weeks of Advent we will gather for worship, followed by fellowship. December 6, we gather to approve the 2016 budget, and Saturday, December 12, at our annual Christmas Store, we invite children from the neighborhood to purchase and wrap gifts for their families for the nominal fee of twenty-five cents per gift. On that Saturday, the building will be filled with children and volunteers from mission partner congregations. On Sunday December 13, worship will be led by Redeemer s children, retelling the story of Christ s birth. Immediately following worship, the congregation will vote on the budget for During the earliest celebrations of Advent the church was convinced that they stood on the precipice of history, Every word that was uttered, every deed done, every prayer prayed was shaped by the promise and anticipation of some amazing change. We share that same feeling of anticipation today. May our days living in this year s season of Advent be equally filled with hope and signs of God s promises. Something indeed is about to happen!

COMMUNITY UPDATES FROM THE INTERN Louis Tillman. As We Forgive Those Who Trespass Against Us. God has been speaking to me in various ways. The past few weeks at Redeemer have been chaotic with the church break in s and the assassination of Jamar Clark a few blocks away from the church. I have been meeting with other clergy to figure out next steps for the Northside of Minneapolis. As a group of clergy, we have met with the Mayor of Minneapolis, immediate family of Jamar Clark, the Minnesota NAACP State President, and the National NAACP President. All in one week, I find myself thinking more than I can forget. I feel that our community is filled with mixed emotions of fear and vulnerability. Some might be thinking My God, My God, why has thou forsaken me? There are many times where fear (false evidence absent of reality) can turn us away from the mission that God has placed on our lives to fulfill. This is a time in North Minneapolis when we as a community need to ride up and lift up one another in the process. Fear cannot take over our mind, body, and soul while we are in the trenches. The Holy Bible says the phrase Do Not Fear approximately 365 times. This is simply a reminder that God will shield us with protection every day as we move forward on this Earth. My supervisor, Rev. Kelly Chatman, often tells me Make lemonade when you re given lemons. I strongly believe that God doesn t give us what we can handle, but God helps us handle what we ve been given. In all of these trying times, I know that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Within my three months in the Harrison Neighborhood, I have seen the grace of God all throughout our community. Redeemer Lutheran Church has been a strong and prophetic witness to sharing the Gospel within broken communities. Many members are constantly asking the question: How can we help? My immediate answer is; prayer. Jesus taught us to pray for ourselves, our friends, our kin, and our enemies. Prayer doesn t have to be with your eyes closed and you mouth chanting. Prayer is any form in which we communicate with God. Whether that s crying, dancing, singing, whispering, or laughing. For when praises go up, blessings come down! After prayer, I strongly recommend forgiveness as the next step. For the past few days I have had one phrase ringing through my mind,.as We Forgive Those Who Trespass Against Us. This comes from the prayer that Christ has first taught us. I am a living witness that I need to practice forgiveness more frequently in my daily life. I am a servant and not a savior. Thus, I have no authority or right to judge the living or the dead. However, I have the audacity and the authority to forgive those who have trespassed against me and my community that I m serving. In this time of prophetic grief, we need people to be a witness of God s grace, hope, faith, and mercy. We as a church are truly fleshing out our model every day that we get out of bed and encounter another being. As I concede my time for this newsletter, I leave with this thought resonating throughout my mind. God didn't add another day in your life because YOU needed it. God added it because SOMEONE out there needs you! 2 Chronicles 20:17 is healthy reminder that this battle (better known as life) is not ours to fight, but God is expecting us to show up. Redeemer Lutheran Church, I believe that we all show up to the battle in our own gifted and unique ways. As you show up, I want for you to think about the question that s on the table. How am I providing a beacon of hope over the Northside of Minneapolis? Celebrate the Confirmation of Naomi Lewis We at Redeemer would like to congratulate Naomi Lewis on her upcoming confirmation as an adult member of the body of Christ. On December 6th, this important milestone will be recognized during service, with a treats and fellowship to follow. As her church community, we gather to celebrate her faith journey and offer our continued support to Naomi and her family. 2

Black Lives Matter Reflection Pastor Kelly If I had not followed the call to become a pastor, I would have likely become a policeman. It seems that I was born with the desire to help people, especially in their time of need. One of the reasons I ruled out being a policeman is I don t like guns. I figured it out early that I would do better in a position where carrying a gun is not required. Still, I hold in high regard policemen and policewomen because the ones I know desire to help people. It is disturbing to me when it seems every week I see on the news yet another young Black person who has been racially profiled, shot, tossed across a classroom or killed by a policeman/woman. I knew them when I was a teacher. Like me, they all shared the desire to help people. So today I ask myself why so many Black male youth are dying at the hands of so many police. One answer for sure must be guns. If that officer on November 22 had not reached for a gun, Jamar Clark would still be alive. If that officer had not reached for a gun, Black Lives Matter would not have occupied the Fourth Precinct the past nine days. Perhaps while Redeemer was being burglarized for the second time in three weeks and Beanie and Babette made the call to the Fourth Precinct, police might have arrived in time to catch the two thieves while they were still in the building. Maybe the answer to the problem is guns? Then and again the answer to the problem could be race, to be specific, racism. There is no denying the preponderance of racism and inequity when it comes to representation of Black youth in enforcement, sentencing and death. So what is the recourse? What are we as people of faith to do? Gather as a community, protest, hold vigil, light candles and pray. Do everything within our imagination, except reach for guns or racism. Whether you are called to be a policeman/woman, parent or preacher, our greatest calling is to help someone. Guns and racism are not the answer. Let s get rid of these and until that day, by all means, let s keep protesting, holding vigils, lighting candles and praying for Black youth desperately in need of someone who is seeking to help them. 4 Devotion from Karis Thompson The following is the devotion Karis Thompson wrote for the Wheat Ridge Foundation. Karis is a member of our Redeemer community and Wheat Ridge Foundation Board of Directors. In light of the recent vigil and prayers at the Fourth Precinct I am thankful for the opportunity to share Karis inspiring reflection: Last week, I joined community organizers and mission developers from around the country for an Organizing for Mission Cohort gathering convened by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and hosted by Redeemer Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. We opened our time together by framing our three preoccupying questions for the weekend Who are we paying attention to? Who are we accountable to? Who benefits!om our work? During our first evening, Ray Pickett, professor of New Testament, Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, theologically grounded our conversations and work, reflecting Mainline churches have mostly paid attention to people like me white, middle class people, [those perceived to be] salt of the earth, self-sufficient people responsible citizens who try to be good people and thereby prop up the status quo. Throughout our gathering, we talked about our restlessness to abandon the status quo and work towards the equity and enfranchisement required for peace and prosperity in the 21st century, and to manifest and inhabit the Beloved Community a vision for community that captivated Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. within our cities. We introduced stories about our contexts and our relationships and how we imagine the world could be and how we hope to disrupt the status quo. For most of us within the cohort, it would be easy to be responsible. We have the stability, credentials and opportunities to productively contribute to the economy and to volunteer to maintain the operations of civic organizations, nonprofits and churches. But because of the people we re paying attention to and accountable to, and the people we hope will benefit from our work, we have become restless, risk-taking and irresponsible. And within the church, within the body of Christ, we have company. During his visit to the U.S. this September, Pope Francis acknowledged four great Americans Dorothy Day, Martin Luther King, Jr., Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Merton. The three Americans known for their roles within and beyond the Christian church Dorothy Day, co-founder of the Catholic Worker movement and newspaper, MLK, pastor and Civil Rights leader, and Thomas Merton, Trappist monk and Catholic writer lived with suspicion from responsible citizens and well-regarded church members and died with arrest records. Dorothy Day recklessly responded to outrage over the Catholic Worker newspaper We confess to being fools, and we wish we were more so. When she scaled the flag pole outside South Carolina s Statehouse to remove a Confederate flag, activist and filmmaker Bree Newsome followed the precedent for irresponsible citizenship and civil disobedience set by Civil Rights activists women and men of faith restless to live in a country that recognized the inherent rights of all people Abraham Joshua Heschel, Amelia Boynton, Bayard Rustin, Fannie Lou Hamer, James Reeb, Jo Ann Robinson, John Lewis and Septima Poinsette Clark, The Mother of the Movement and Rosa Parks mentor, who said, I have a great belief in the fact that whenever there is chaos, it creates wonderful thinking. I consider chaos a gift. As she descended the flag pole, Bree Newsome echoed David, The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? CONTINUED ON PAGE 5 4

DEVOTION CONTINUED Later, while reflecting on why she risked arrest and a prison sentence, Bree spoke about her convictions and call as a Christian Jesus is one of the biggest agitators that ever lived. The only time Jesus was in the temple was when He s flipping stuff over and stirring things up. As a church, can we stay responsible and claim to be disciples of Jesus? Or do we need to pay attention to people beyond the salt of the earth, self-sufficient individuals who have built and sustained our congregations, and become accountable to those who benefit the least within the status quo? What would happen if we became reckless fools for Christ s sake who recognized chaos and the unsettling of the status quo as an opportunity to pursue life-giving change? How could our communities illuminate this insight articulated by Pope Francis? Persons always live in relationship. We come from others, we belong to others, and our lives are enlarged by our encounter with others. 6 Northside Leaders and Youth Leaders Joint Retreat The weekend of November 20th-22nd provided extraordinary opportunities for the visionary, powerful young people that make up part of the Redeemer community. Two retreats took place at Bay Lake Camp, one for the Northside Leadership Project and one for the Redeemer youth group. Both retreats created room for telling truth, building relationships and looking ahead to how young people at Redeemer can take leadership and make lasting change in their neighborhoods and the world. Eight members of the Northside Leadership Project attended, along with 12 youth. The Youth Group Retreat was organized by Angela Bonfiglio, Ian McConnell and Beatrice Kanake. Each led activities that challenged the youth to think about Empire, as it relates to oppression, power, and liberation. Biblical references were used to begin conversation about examples of oppression in the youth s personal life experiences. They also talked about the different meanings of power and what it means to be empowered. Later, youth participated in a Shark Tank activity, in which they brainstormed ideas for how they can identify creative solutions and use their talents to create positive impact in their communities. One young person proposed the idea of a citizen police force to help settle disputes and keep police accountable. Another person compared a community to a garden that has some wilting parts, encouraging people to think of ways to promote wholeness in the community. Meanwhile, the Northside Leaders addressed current concerns and claiming their own power. Through storytelling and conversations, participants examined the needs they have seen and heard in the neighborhood, what their personal strengths are, and what they would like the collective impact of the Northside Leadership Project to be. The young adults made themselves vulnerable as they discussed their feelings about the protests at the 4th police precinct and what they would like to do in response. It was just a great time for people to take a break and reconnect, says Thomas Siburg, organizer of the retreat. Thomas also said the group s interactions with youth helped to ground the conversations and remind the young adults to whom they are accountable. On Saturday night, the two groups came together for a special talent show and rap battle! Members of both groups testified to the fun they had and the powerful experiences of oneness and hope they shared on retreat, returning with a sense of direction and strength for what comes next. Christmas Poinsettia Christmas poinsettias will be for sale starting this Sunday, November 29th through Sunday, December 6th. Each poinsettia is $8.00. Over 25 women from Redeemer went to Bay Lake Camp November 6th-8th for a women s retreat. Fun was had by all, and many stated that they cannot wait for the next retreat! Forms will be available each Sunday. If you are not able to be at church, but would like to order a poinsettia contact the Church Office or admin@redeemermpls.org.

Redeemer Open Mic Brings Community Together Open mic at Venture North is back! Thursday, November 19th, marked the start of Harrison Healing Harmony, an open mic sharing ideas, music and poetry that showcases the vibrant voices of the Harrison Neighborhood and beyond. Over 50 community members attended the event. The mood in the room was beautiful. There was such a sense of community in the room, says Kendrick Hall, a manager at Venture North and co-organizer of the event. Noelle Barber, an employee of Harrison Neighborhood Association, led a creative activity that involved participants thinking about the meaning of power and creating an original spoken word piece. Performances included poetry by Kirk Washington, music by Emander Deward and Keah Spurgen, art by Azalea Robins, and music and poetry by Joe Davis and the Poetic Diaspora. It was an inspirational night for me, says Kyara Lambert, a young poet and barista at Venture North. It caused me to want to write more and perform more spoken word. Food was provided by Sunnyside Cafe and Afro Deli. Harrison Healing Harmony will return on Thursday, December 17th, hosted by the resplendent Joe Davis and Denetrick Powers. Community members interested in performing may sign up by stopping in to Venture North the day of the event. Timeslots are limited! Harrison Healing Venture North December 17th, 6-8: Glenwood Ave 7

Meet A Northside Leader: Katherine Parent -- Artist in Residence at Redeemer Lutheran Church. As the Artist in Residence at Redeemer, Katherine has been able to facilitate community art making. From the Stations of the Cross, to the story of Jesus life, to mosaics and murals -- all of these came from the shared vision of community members making art together. While reflecting on art pieces tied with group biblical study, Katherine recalls While creating [the art] it was cool because most people there didn t identify as artists, or had a lot of a reservations about making art. But I worked to create a space that making things look right wasn t the goal. The goal was exploring the text in colors and shapes. Some people made powerful things! There was one piece that was completely abstract. Jesus was a tiny shape, and [Pontius] Pilate was huge. It seemed like a powerful statement of power and hierarchy, of Pilate towering over Jesus. It gets everyone thinking in creative ways. Through this art making, she has led transformative experiences in and with others. Just as she leads others through transformation, she, too, has been transformed by being here at Redeemer Lutheran Church and the Northside Leadership Project. Katherine stumbled upon the Northside Leadership Project when she came to volunteer time to build the Glenwood House, having learned about the project from former staff member, Kelly Schumacher Fuller. After studying and living in Norway, beginning her studies as a doctoral student at Luther Seminary, and learning about intentional community living from friends who had done LVC and through reading the theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer s Life Together, Katherine longed for intentional community living. She sought a community that allowed for deep spiritual and community questions and longings, and specifically around being anti-racist and multicultural and learning to resist the dominant culture of whiteness. Before joining Redeemer as part of the Northside Leadership Project, she recalls being in an unhappy place, and spent a lot of time discerning and praying. Desiring both an intentional living community and to be out in the community, rather than isolated in academia at Luther Seminary, following volunteering, Pastor Kelly took her out to coffee -- and the rest is history (her-story?). She moved into the Newton House, becoming part of the Northside Leadership Project, and was hired on as Artist in Residence. She was able to blend art with community with scripture with a job and with Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE). Being part of the Northside Leadership Project and the Redeemer community has brought with it, as Katherine says, transformation and hope. Moving into the actively anti-racist, diverse, intergenerational community of the Harrison neighborhood, Katherine dove into intense, transformative conversations with mentors and friends around the realities of systemic racism, challenging her own stereotypes, racial identity and implicit bias, and learning that healing and authentic, healthy community could look like. I started learning to ask, what was in the way of me showing up for other people, and how can I change that in my own life? Redeemer is a place where people learn how to show up for each other with all our differences, in times of celebration and in times of pain. Katherine states that this transformative healing was a very emotional and painful one. This is the same transformative process she sees others experience in making art together. And it s the same transformative healing that Bonhoeffer speaks of as the costly grace in the reality of Jesus dying for us. Katherine says The suffering of God is the suffering of the world So I think about costly grace as well in the context of confronting systems of oppression [and how] there s no easy out. It s hard because there s both like deep healing and joy in that work and it s not a comfortable process, and it can t be - because oppression is so real. She finds hope in the deep conversations she has been a part of and the awakening community art that has been created. The transformation that comes from these is what strikes her. It is an honor being here at Redeemer. The story she shared of the creation of the community bread oven depicts this same honor and transformation. The community artmaking led to the words Break Bread Together being chosen for the oven. Katherine states, This is a really powerful phrase. Whenever someone says that to me, I feel I m being invited into a sacred space. Eating together, making art together, being in community together is a messy, creative, transformative process. And to Katherine it is a huge honor and example of the costly and transformative grace of God. 7
