Great Commission Baptist Church a Lesson I Date: April 3, Peter 2:18-25 Lesson Outline A. For the Cause (1Peter 2 vs 18) B. For the Conscience (1Peter 2 vs ) C. For Christ (1Peter 2 vs ) Submit to Authority When God provides direction in ministry, many of us are like people in a fog, and we give no answer. Moses reply to God revealed that he knew where he was and that he was ready. Readiness means having a right relationship to God and having the knowledge of where we are. We are so busy telling God where we would like to go. Yet the man or woman who is ready for God and His work is the one who receives the prize when the summons comes. We wait with the idea that some great opportunity or something sensational will be coming our way, and when it does come, we are quick to cry out, Here I am. Whenever we sense that Jesus Christ is rising up to take authority over some great task, we are there, but we are not ready for some obscure duty. Readiness for God means that we are prepared to do the smallest thing or the largest thing it makes no difference. It means we have no choice in what we want to do, but that whatever God s plans may be, we are there and ready. Whenever any duty presents itself, we hear God s voice as our Lord heard His Father s voice, and we are ready for it with the total readiness of our love for Him. Jesus Christ expects to do with us just as His Father did with Him. He can put us wherever He wants, in pleasant duties or in menial ones, because our union with Him is the same as His union with the Father. that they may be one just as We are one (John 17:22) Share a time you wasted trying to get ready instead of being obedient. 1 Ferguson, David. 8 Great Commission Baptist Church Lesson I Date: April 3, Peter 2:18-25 Lesson Aim: To understand that they are to submit (be respectful and honorable) to those who have authority over them even if the person is a nonbeliever and may cause unjust suffering. To faithfully fulfill your obligations willing, and commitments with a godly attitude that brings glory to God Commentary compiled by Bobby J. Williams Sr., Diploma(SBI) All editing and copying by permission only. 3 Earline Franklin All lesson outlines by Rev. Terrence Howard, All editing by Rev. Terrence Howard, 1 Peter 2:18 (KJV) 18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward 1 Peter 2:18 (NIV) 18 Slaves, in reverent fear of God submit yourselves to your masters, not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh. Submit to Authority A. For the Cause (Verse 18) Peter now instructs us on how to submit even when life just isn't fair. Here is one of the most heard cries of the day. That's not fair. The bottom line is that life is not always going to be fair. Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward (Job 5:7). Man will have trouble. In this section Peter points out that life on this earth wasn't fair for Christ either. He didn't quit, He didn't retaliate, He didn't complain. Instead He for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God (Hebrews 12:2). 1 This word servants means, household servants : Probably including freedmen still remaining in their master s house. Masters were not commonly Christians: he therefore mentions only the duties of the servants. These were then often persecuted by their unbelieving masters. Peter s special object seems to be to teach them submission, whatever the character of the masters might be. 1 (The Bible Knowledge Commentary) For an example: What if people in authority treat us unjustly? Selecting the critical area of potential mistreatment in his own society, Peter looked at the relationship between slave and master. The slave is to submit, Peter wrote, and to maintain due respect not only to those who are good and considerate, but also to those who are harsh (v. 18). This is not an endorsement of slavery. Nor is it suggesting that a person should not seek relief, if society makes it possible. Peter simply focused on an extreme case to provide a clear illustration of the principle of submission. In Peter s world, a slave had no right to demand considerate treatment. It was perfectly legal, though morally wrong, for a master to treat his slave harshly. Did harsh treatment release the Christian slave from his obligation to submit with respect? No, Peter said firmly. The Christian s call to a life of submission is not conditional. Another person s failure to live God s way does not release us from our responsibility to so submit. 2 2

1. Great Commission Baptist Church Lesson I Date: April 3, 2016 I Peter 2: Grief: Emotional suffering brought on by bereavement, mishap, or disaster. To grieve is either to cause or feel sorrow or distress. The concept is found in the Scriptures under a variety of circumstances. Isaac and Rebekah experienced grief when their son Esau married a Hittite woman (Gen. 26:35). God mourned the misery of Israel brought upon them by disobedience (Judg 10:16) Commentary compiled by Bobby J. Williams Sr., Diploma(SBI) All editing and copying by permission only. 3 Tyndale Bible Dictionary All lesson outlines by Rev. Terrence Howard, All editing by Rev. Terrence Howard, 1 Peter 2:19-20 (KJV) 19 For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. 20 For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. Submit to Authority 1 Peter 2:19-20 (NIV) 19 For it is commendable if someone bears up under the pain of unjust suffering because they are conscious of God. 20 But how is it to your credit if you receive a beating for doing wrong and endure it? But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, this is commendable before God. B. For the Conscience (Verse 19) It is one thing to be punished when we deserve it. But is quite another to suffer when we don't deserve it. Peter presses home the fact that our motive in being good servants\employees is to please God. For this is thankworthy. This is a powerful thought and one that will help the Christian survive the workplace. The word thankworthy is the same word translated grace when speaking of the grace of God (Eph. 2:8). God's grace is unmerited favor to man. When we deserved judgment and death God showed us grace. The idea here is simple. The boss may not deserve our obedience, but we are to graciously submit nevertheless. We graciously bestow upon him that which he does not deserve because our obedience pleases God. Peter s counsel is that Christians be good citizens and employees so that God will be glorified. (See Jeremiah s advice to the captives [Jer. 29].) The example for us to follow is Jesus Christ who submitted even to death. So for the Lord s sake we are to show respect and submission to the following parties: Civil authorities, Employers and to everyone. Peter encouraged loyalty and perseverance even in the face of unjust treatment. By so doing, we may win them to Christ by our good example. 1 (Verse 20) While bearing the pain of unjust suffering is commendable before God, there is no special commendation for patiently bearing punishment that is deserved. The word for beaten means to strike with one s fist (see also Mark 14:65). Christian slaves who patiently endured suffering when they had done nothing to deserve it would please God. However, if they suffered for doing wrong, then they would get no credit. 2 3

1. Great Commission Baptist Church Lesson I Date: April 3, 2016 I Peter 2: Revile: means to villify, heap reproach on, and is used to represent the treatment of the Lord by His enemies (John 9:28; 1 Peter 2:23), the question put to Paul by the high priest (Acts 23:4), and the revilers (or slanderers, NIV) in the catalog of evildoers (1 Cor. 6:10). In the expression they that passed by reviled him (KJV; hurling abuse, NASB) the evangelist uses Gk. blasphemeo, a very strong term, signifying to rail at, or calumniate, showing an utter lack of reverence for the divine Sufferer Commentary compiled by Bobby J. Williams Sr., Diploma(SBI) All editing and copying by permission only. 4 New Unger's Bible Dictionary All lesson outlines by Rev. Terrence Howard, All editing by Rev. Terrence Howard, 1 Peter 2: (KJV) 21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: 22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: 23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously Submit to Authority 1 Peter 2: (NIV) 21 To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. 22 "He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth." 23 When they hurled their insults at him, he did not retaliate; when he suffered, he made no threats. Instead, he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. C. For Christ (Verse 21) Notice the phrase, leaving us an example. If we want to know how to respond to injustice just look at the way Jesus responded to it. Jesus suffered as no man before or after Him has ever suffered. He suffered not for His own sin for He was sinless. He suffered for our sin. For Christ is our Role Model of all that He did on earth, as recorded in the four Gospels, is a perfect example for us to follow (Psalm 85:13). 1 (Verse 22) Peter quoted from Isaiah 53:9, Isaiah s prophecy about the suffering of the coming Messiah. Christ s suffering was completely unjust because he never sinned or deceived anyone; there was no good reason for his being condemned to death (even Pilate saw that see John 19:4). From personal experience Peter knew that Jesus was perfect. He had lived and traveled with Jesus for three years. Intimate relationships often reveal the worst in people, but Peter had seen the truth of the prophet s words. Christ was completely sinless in his life and in his words (Luke 23:47). 2 (Verse 23) when we are being insulted, the instinctive response is to retaliate or to defend ourselves. At other times, uttering threats of revenge against the enemy, even if those threats cannot be carried out, seems to ease the pain. These responses do not follow the example of Jesus Christ in his moment of suffering. Christ's example was to endure or bear up under the pain. He did so when he entrusted himself to him who judges justly. Jesus Christ entrusted himself and the entire situation to God the Father. Isaiah 53, He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. 3 4

1. Great Commission Baptist Church Lesson I Date: April 3, 2016 I Peter 2: Questions: 1. How did Jesus act when suffering? What lesson should we learn fr0m His suffering? 2. How have you handled unjust treatment in a Christlike manner? 3. What Godly attitude do you display in the workplace that brings glory to God? 1-2 Commentary compiled by Bobby J. Williams Sr., Diploma(SBI) All editing and copying by permission only. 3 Earline Franklin Questions by Earline Franklin All lesson outlines by Rev. Terrence Howard, All editing by Rev. Terrence Howard, 1 Peter 2: (KJV) 24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. 25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. Submit to Authority 1 Peter 2: (NIV) 24 "He himself bore our sins"in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; "by his wounds you have been healed." 25 For "you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. C. For Christ (Verse 24) Again, Peter makes his way to the cross, reminding us that Christ died for us and that we died with Him (Rom.6). Our identification with Christ in death (2:24) and resurrection (1:3) makes it possible for us to live a righteous life. We have been healed of the malady of sin by His sacrifice on the cross. Vs.24 has nothing to do with physical healing; it is the healing of the soul. 1 (Verse 25) The picture of the shepherd and sheep would mean much to Peter, since he heard Jesus teach about the Good Shepherd in (John 10), and since Christ commanded him to tend His sheep (John 21). The lost sinner is a straying sheep, but Christ, the Shepherd, seeks him out and saves him. The word Bishop means over seer, Christ saves us, and then watches over us to guard us from evil. 2 Summary: Peter encourages believers to be subject to their masters. Today it would apply to employees being subject or submissive to their bosses. It is wonderful to work for someone who is fair, encouraging and supportive of an employee but not so easy for one who is just the opposite. A harsh boss can make work unbearable. However, Peter says that even in such a case you are to still to be subject and to fulfill your duties faithfully. When we suffer while doing that which is required, God is glorified. Our faith is placed in Jesus, who suffered for humanity and leaves us an example of how we are to fulfill our work while suffering. Christian obligations does not depend on the character of the person to whom the duty is to be performed but on what God has established as righteous living. 3 5

Great Commission Baptist Church a Lesson II Date: April 10, Peter 3:1-7 Lesson Outline A. Her Conduct (1Peter 3 vs. 1-2) B. Her Character (1Peter 3 vs. 3-4) C. Her Challenge (1Peter 3 vs. 5-6) D. His Commands (1Peter 3 vs. 7) The Lifestyle of a Godly Marriage By contrast, the Bible makes clear that, at the root, marriage and the families are not human conventions based merely on a temporary consensus and time-honored tradition. Instead, Scripture teaches that family was God's idea and that marriage is a divine, not merely human, institution. The implication of this truth is significant indeed, for this means that humans are not free to renegotiate or redefine marriage and the family in any way they choose but that they are called to preserve and respect what has been divinely instituted. This is in keeping with Jesus' words, uttered when his contemporaries asked him about the permissibility of divorce: "What therefore God has joined together let not man separate" (Matthew 19:6). For this reason, marriage is far more than a human social contract; it is a divinely instituted covenant. But what is a "covenant"? In essence, a covenant is a contract between two parties that is established before God as a witness, a contract whose permanence is ultimately safeguarded by none other than God himself. In this sense, marriage is a covenant: the husband and the wife before God as a witness enter into it. Because it is ultimately God who has joined the marriage partners together, the husband and the wife vow to each other abiding loyalty and fidelity "till death do us part." Rightly understood, therefore, a marriage entered into before God involves three persons: a husband, a wife, and God. For this reason, it is not self-interest, human advantage, or an unfettered commitment to personal freedom that governs the marriage relationship, but the husband and wife's joint commitment to conduct their marriage based on God's design and sovereign plan When offering advises to married couples what is your source of reference? 1 Ferguson, David. 13 1. Great Commission Baptist Church Lesson II Date: April 10, Peter 3:1-7 1 Peter 3: 1-2 (KJV) 1 Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; 2 While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. 1 Peter 3: 1-2 (NIV) 1 Wives, in the same way submit yourselves to your own husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, 2 when they see the purity and reverence of your lives. The Lifestyle of a Godly Marriage Lesson Aim: To fully understand that a Godly marriage is one where the husband and wife live in submission to God and live out the pattern He has designed for each of them Commentary compiled by Bobby J. Williams Sr., Diploma(SBI) All editing and copying by permission only. 4 Earline Franklin All lesson outlines by Rev. Terrence Howard, All editing by Rev. Terrence Howard, A. Her Conduct (Verse 1) The word conduct means that of behavior or demeanor. Submitting oneself to another is the opposite of selfassertion, the opposite of an independent, autocratic spirit. It is the desire to get along with someone else. It involves being satisfied at times with less than what one may deserve or claim as a right. The goal of this type of behavior is to win over to Christ the non-believing husband. This occurs without words. This does not mean that a wife is never to speak, but rather that she is not to resort to constant arguments and nagging discussions. The husband will be more influenced by the behavior of his wife. This links this chapter to chapter 2, where verse 12 indicates that the non-christian audience can be positively influenced for Christ as they observe the consistent and godly behavior of a believer. 1 As Christian wives live out the declaration of the praises of God, their husbands will be influenced. For the Christian wife living with a non-christian husband, Peter's previous discussion of suffering even while doing what is right may have some application even within the context of her marriage and home. What a Christian wife says often will not change her husband; how she lives out her faith before him will make the difference (James 5:19-20). 2 (Verse 2) Here is an area where the believing wife with the unbelieving husband whereas she cannot save him, but her behavior can bring her unbelieving husband to faith apart from his hearing the word preached.by chaste conversation pure conduct. fear or, reverence. Her conduct is to be pure and reverential, free from all impurity and recognizing her husband's proper authority. 3 7

Great Commission Baptist Church Lesson II Date: April 10, Peter 3: Peter 3: 3-4 (KJV) 3 Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; 4 But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. 1 Peter 3: 3-4 (NIV) 3 Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. 4 Rather, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. Submit to Authority Adorn: (Gk. kosmeo, to ornament ). To embellish with honor, gain; followed by a participle designating the act by which the honor is gained (Titus 2:10) Commentary compiled by Bobby J. Williams Sr., Diploma(SBI) All editing and copying by permission only. 3 New Unger's Bible Dictionary All lesson outlines by Rev. Terrence Howard, All editing by Rev. Terrence Howard, B. Her Character (Verse 3) For whatever attention is given to outward appearances, the key to lasting beauty is what is inside a person. If a woman s outward appearance is the sum and substance of her being, she is nothing but a shell. No matter how captivating or common her beauty, no matter how exquisite or simple her apparel, a Christian wife must always allow her inner faith and character to shine through. As she conducts her daily life, she reflects the light of Christ. Most importantly, she does not draw attention to herself but rather to her Lord. 1 (Verse 4) Peter was not saying that women should make themselves plain, but that they should not become overly involved in their physical appearance. Outward beauty is not scorned but rather seen in the right perspective: it is much more important to develop a beautiful inner character. Peter does not forbid the use of jewelry or stylish clothes, only their abuse. A well-dressed woman can be humble and a plain, austere woman can be proud. of the heart, in that which is not corruptible i.e., in that deepest, hidden part of you which has been born again and been adorned with the Holy Spirit. a meek and quiet spirit A woman who has this spirit does not go around making disturbances; rather she quietly bears the disturbances that others cause (cf. 1 Tim. 2:9-11). A woman with such a spirit is gentle in her feelings and relationships and quiet in her words, bearing, and action. which is in the sight of God of great price We need to remember that God observes our hearts, not just our outer appearance. Since Christ's lifeblood is precious to us (1:19), we should try to live in a way that is precious, or pleasing to God. 2 8

1. Great Commission Baptist Church Lesson II Date: April 10, Peter 3:1-7 Apparel: In Old Testament times the distinction between male and female attire was not very marked. The statute forbidding men to wear female apparel (Deut. 22:5) referred especially to ornaments and head-dresses. Both men and women wore (1) an under garment or tunic, which was bound by a girdle. One who had only this tunic on was spoken of as "naked"(1 Sa 19:24; job 24:10). Those in high stations sometimes wore two tunics, the outer being called the "upper garment" (1 Sa 15:27) Commentary compiled by Bobby J. Williams Sr., Diploma(SBI) All editing and copying by permission only. 3 Easton's Illustrated Dictionary All lesson outlines by Rev. Terrence Howard, All editing by Rev. Terrence Howard, 1 Peter 3: 5-6 (KJV) 5 For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: 6 Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement. The Lifestyle of a Godly Marriage 1 Peter 3: 5-6 (NIV) 5 For this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God used to adorn themselves. They submitted themselves to their own husbands, 6 like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her lord. You are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear. C. Her Challenge (Verse 5) The holy women of the past were both holy and beautiful, not because they lived perfect lives and had perfect looks, but because they trusted God. Another ancient writer understood this: Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised (Prov. 31:30). These women trusted in God and knew how to submit to the authority God had established, by accepting the authority of their husbands. 1 (Verse 6) Sarah is cited as an example. She obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. This takes us back to Gen. 18:12 where we read that Sarah said this "within herself." She did not go around and make a loud profession of submission to Abraham by publicly calling him lord. Rather, in her inward life, she recognized him as her head, and this recognition was displayed by her actions. Those women who follow Sarah's example are her children. Jewish women are descendants of Sarah by natural birth. But to be her daughters in the best sense, they must imitate her personal character. Children should carry the family likeness. They should do good and let nothing terrify them. This means that a Christian wife should fill her God-appointed role as an obedient helpmate, and not be terrified even if she must suffer the unreasonable conduct of an unbelieving husband, except, of course, when it becomes violent or life-threatening. Fear may be more of a problem for most women. So Peter assures them that they do not need to fear anyone if they do right not even if their unbelieving husbands have a sudden outbreak of temper in response to their goodness, continue to obey God (Dan. 3: 16-18). 2 9

The Lifestyle of a Godly Marriage I Peter 3: 7 (NIV) 7 Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers. D. His Commands (Verse 7) This passage says, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge Husbands are to acknowledge the proper relation of the sexes in God's design and act with tenderness, wisdom, and understanding. giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel Both husband and wife are vessels God has made to fulfill his purposes (see Rom. 9:23). Both are weak, but the woman is weaker. The husband's sense of his own weakness and his realization that his wife is equally God's vessel should lead him to act with tender and wise consideration toward her. being heirs together of the grace of life The man should give honor to the woman because God gives honor to them both as fellow-heirs of the riches in Christ (cf. 1:4). that your prayers be not hindered Dissensions prevent the united prayers on which many of God's blessings depend. 1 Summary: Many of us have grown up with bad models of what a marriage is. The models that many use are those that are promised on television or in the media. These models for the most part are in conflict with what God has designed. Peter tells believers that God has designed behavior for both spouses to follow in order to have a godly marriage where peace and harmony exist. Satan attacks the home because it destroys the image of God and therefore our society becomes farther and farther from God as the family decays. Peters gives the character and conduct of the woman more so in this passage. Wives are to submit, honor and respect, delight in and have an inner disposition that is pleasing to God and will be pleasing to her husband as well. She should be reverential in her attitude toward her husband, modest in dress and place her faith in God. The man then is to bestow honor, respect and compassion on the woman as the physically weaker sex, recognizing that both are equal heirs of God s bestowment of life. 2 10

Great Commission Baptist Church a Lesson III Date: April 17, Peter 3:8-11 Lesson Outline A. Live in Harmony (1Peter 3 vs 8-9a) B. Remember Our Heritage (1Peter 3 vs. 9b) C. Produces Happiness (1Peter 3 vs ) Living for Christ Part I Our Lord s exhortation to us in Matthew 5:38-48 is to be generous in our behavior toward everyone. Beware of living according to your natural affections in your spiritual life. The example our Lord gave us here is not that of a good person, or even of a good Christian, but of God Himself. be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect. In other words, simply show to the other person what God has shown to you. And God will give you plenty of real life opportunities to prove whether or not you are perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect. Being a disciple means deliberately identifying yourself with God. The true expression of Christian character is not in gooddoing, but in God-likeness. If the Spirit of God has transformed you within, you will exhibit divine characteristics in your life, not just good human characteristics. God s life in us expresses itself as God s life, not as human life trying to be godly. The secret of a Christian s life is that the supernatural becomes natural in him as a result of the grace of God, and the experience of this becomes evident in the practical, everyday details of life, not in times of intimate fellowship with God. And when we come in contact with things that create confusion and a flurry of activity, we find to our own amazement that we have the power to stay wonderfully poised even in the center of it all Does your conduct exhibit Godliness? 1 Ferguson, David. 18 Great Commission 1. Baptist Church Lesson III Date: April 17, Peter 3: 8-11 Lesson Aim: To learn God's formula for living at peace with others Commentary compiled by Rev. Terrence Howard, All editing and copying by permission only. 4 Rev. Terrence Howard All lesson outlines by Rev. Terrence Howard, All editing by Rev. Terrence Howard, 1 Peter 3:8-9 (KJV) 8 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: 9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. Living for Christ Part 1 1 Peter 3:8-9 (NIV) 8 Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. 9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. A. Live in Harmony (Verse 8) Peter tells us in this verse that in order for us to live for Christ, we have to live in harmony. This verse says, Finally, be ye all of one mind. This phrase one mind, means to be harmonious; to be like-minded; to be of the same mind. We must live in harmony with one mind. This carries the idea that we must keep our minds on the same things. We must focus our minds upon Jesus Christ and His mission (Col. 3:10). We must keep our minds upon living holy, righteous, and pure lives. We must keep our minds upon developing spiritual character and fruit. We must keep our minds upon carrying out the ministry and mission of Christ (Luke 19:10). Peter continues to tell them that in order to have the harmony, we have to have compassion. This word compassion means sympathy; to actually feel with others. It means to feel for others so much that, one suffers with those who suffers, one who weeps with those who weep, one who rejoices when others are honored, one who hurts with those who are criticized and attacked, and one who grieves with the sorrows of another. 1 Unity cannot exist unless believers feel compassion and sympathy for one another. We cannot be selfish and aloof; we cannot be seeking to get our own way if we are to be unified. Unity demands sympathy; unity demands that we feel for one another that we feel deeply, so deeply that we actually experience what other believers experience: pain, hurt, abuse, suffering, joy, and rejoicing (Rom. 12:15). 2 He also tells us in order to have harmony, we have to show love. We must have brotherly love for one another. brotherly love. If two people truly love each other, they will do anything for the other. There is no greater bond on earth than true love. This is especially true of the love between believers. Why? Is there a difference between the love that believers have for one another. 3 12

Great `U Commission Baptist Church Lesson III Date: April 17, Peter 3: Peter 3:8-9 (KJV) 8 Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: 9 Not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. 1 Peter 3:8-9 (NIV) 8 Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble. 9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. Railing, (2 Chron. 32:17), "letters to rail on Yahweh, (1 Samuel 25:14, of Nabal, "he railed at them," the English Revised Version "flew upon them," margin "railed on") Commentary compiled by Rev. Terrence Howard, Living for Christ Part 1 A. Live in Harmony (Verse 8) The love that believers are to have for one another is what the Greeks call Philadelphian love, a very special kind of love. This word is scarcely found, except in Christian writings. Philadelphian love means brotherly love, the very special love that exists between the brothers and sisters within a loving family. We are not to pretend, play and act like we love one another, we are to love one another genuinely and sincerely. Then we see Peter mentions the word courteous. This word means to be submissive; to walk in a spirit of lowliness; to present oneself as lowly; to be of low degree and low rank; not to be high minded, proud or arrogant(1 John 3:18-19). 1 (Verse 9a-b) This verse says, Not rendering evil for evil, because of whose we are, we do not retaliate, but bless those who do evil against us. This refers to both believers and unbelievers. No matter the severity of the evil, we are not to retaliate. We are not to return evil for evil to anyone. As believers we will mistreated and suffer evil because we are followers of Christ. The world will hate us and try to abuse us, but we are not to retaliate and return evil for evil. The world's way is to strike back. Get even! But the Christian way is forgiveness. 2 B. Remember Our Heritage (Verse 9c) In this part of the verse we see the conjunction, but. On the first part of this verse Peter tells us what not to do and then he doesn t leave us not knowing how to act and behave. He then says, but contrariwise blessing. This word blessing comes from the root word, "bless" which means to speak well of. We are to speak well to our persecutors. We do not react against them by cursing, speaking harshly, or striking out at them. We do not (nxt pg) 3 13

Living for Christ Part 1 Tongue: Vicious uses of the tongue are expressed by the following phrases: flattery (Psalm 5:90; Proverbs 28:23), backbiting (Psalm 15:3); Proverbs 25:23), deceit(psalm 50:19), unrestrained speech (Psalm 73:9), lying (Psalm 109:2); etc. Virtuous uses are specified: keeping the tongue (Psalm 34:13) Commentary originated by Rev. Remember Our Heritage (Verse 9c-d) try either to hurt them verbally or physically. On the contrary, we seek to find something that is commendable about them and we commend them for it (Eph. 4:31-32). We are even commanded as believers not only to find something to say to those who curse us or talk bad to us, but we are to pray for them (Matt. 5:44). At the end of this verse it says, that ye should inherit a blessing. We are to remember that this is not our home and that after this earthly tabernacle deteriorates and we die, our home is to live eternally with Jesus. 1 C. Produces Happiness (Verse 10) Millions of people are lonely, empty, and unfulfilled. They feel they have no significant purpose in life. They do not love or enjoy life. This is the subject of this great passage, how to love and enjoy life. This verse teaches us that when we begin to love life, we will see good days only if we refrain our tongue from evil. This word refrain means to restrain, quit, stop or come to an end. If we are doing it, this verse is commanding us to stop. We are to discipline or control our tongue from backbiting, cursing, gossiping, and criticizing. This is our responsibility if we want to live for Christ and be happy. The end of this verse it says, and his lips that they speak no guile. This word guile, means to decoy, to trick or bait, to deceive. Our lips and behavior is not to take part in such activity because this will cause unhappiness. This type of speech twists information and is designed to tear down. Obviously, evil and insulting words can achieve a temporary victory, but they inflict pain and destroy relationships and our testimony for Jesus Christ. 2 14

1. Great Commission Baptist Church 1 Peter 3:11 (KJV) 11 Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it. 1 Peter 3:11 (NIV) 11 He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it.. Lesson III Date: April 17, Peter 3: 8-11 Questions: 1. All believers are supposed to be of one mind. How can you explain the division and strife within some church bodies? Living for Christ Part 1 C. Produces Happiness (Verse 11) We should not entertain evil thoughts nor expose ourselves to temptation. On the contrary, we should "eschew" evil. This word eschew means to avoid, go out of the way, that is, get out of its way when he sees temptation coming. We should "lean away from" evil; we should bend over backward to avoid it. More than that, we should take positive steps to do "good", beneficial deeds; as in Galatians 6:10, doing "good" unto all men). Good deeds and good words should mark us as believers, we also should be known for good relationships. We should always "seek" peace As an individual, how can you stay focused on Christ, on living a godly life, on bearing fruit? 3. Is it possible to stay focused on Christ and the world at the same time? Why or why not? 1 Commentary originated by Rev. Terrence Howard, All editing and copying by permission only 2 Rev. Terrence Howard, Summary: We are to live at peace with other Christian believers. When the world looks at believers, they are to see a most unusual unity, a spirit of oneness that is not found anywhere else on earth. They are to see believers who are so unified and so closely knit together that they are as brothers and sisters brothers and sisters who stand together, who love and support each through all the trials and temptations of life. With all the sin, suffering, evil, and injustice of the world, it is still possible to live in peace and to be at peace with others. God has given you a formula. It is up to you to follow. 2 Questions by Rev. Terrence Howard, All lesson outlines by Rev. Terrence Howard, All editing by Rev. Terrence Howard, 15

Great Commission Baptist Church a Lesson IV Date: April 24, Peter 3:12-17 Lesson Outline A. Separated for Christ (1Peter 3 vs 12) B. Security in Christ (1Peter 3 vs. 13) C. Sufferings for Christ (1Peter 3 vs ) Living for Christ Part II A saint s life is in the hands of God like a bow and arrow in the hands of an archer. God is aiming at something the saint cannot see, but our Lord continues to stretch and strain, and every once in a while the saint says, I can t take any more. Yet God pays no attention; He goes on stretching until His purpose is in sight, and then He lets the arrow fly. Entrust yourself to God s hands. Is there something in your life for which you need perseverance right now? Maintain your intimate relationship with Jesus Christ through the perseverance of faith. Proclaim as Job did, Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him (Job 13:15). Faith is not some weak and pitiful emotion, but is strong and vigorous confidence built on the fact that God is holy love. And even though you cannot see Him right now and cannot understand what He is doing, you know Him. God ventured His all in Jesus Christ to save us, and now He wants us to venture our all with total abandoned confidence in Him. There are areas in our lives where that faith has not worked in us as yet places still untouched by the life of God. There were none of those places in Jesus Christ s life, and there are to be none in ours. Jesus prayed, This is eternal life, that they may know You (John 17:3). The real meaning of eternal life is a life that can face anything it has to face without wavering. If we will take this view, life will become one great romance a glorious opportunity of seeing wonderful things all the time. God is disciplining us to get us into this central place of power What area in your life you have not surrender totally to God? 1 Ferguson, David. The Great Commandment Principle. 23 This Lesson IV Date: April 24, Peter 3: Great Commission 1. Baptist Church 1 Peter 3:12-13 (KJV) 12 For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. 13 And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? 1 Peter 3:12-13 (NIV) 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil." 13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? Living for Christ Part 2 Lesson Aim: To learn God's formula for living at peace with others Commentary originated by Rev. Terrence Howard, All editing and copying by permission only. 3 Rev. Terrence Howard, All lesson outlines by Rev. Terrence Howard, All editing by Rev. Terrence Howard, A. Separated for Christ (Verse 12) The word separated mean to keep apart, disconnect or sever. We are to be separated, disconnected from the world, disconnected from our old ways, disconnected from our old way of thinking because we are now in the body of Christ, we are God s children and Peter says, For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil. Peter now uses a quote from David (Psalm 34). David s life was experiencing its own ups and downs when he wrote this psalm. In other words, David was not a trouble maker. This was true even in his dealings with his bitter enemy, King Saul. Never once did he lift up his hand against him. Never once did he verbally abuse him. David knew that the eyes of the Lord was upon him and he had to remain separate from the world. The text says that his eyes are on the righteous. The righteous are those who have been justified, those who have accepted Him as Lord of their lives, through having faith in His only begotten son, Jesus Christ. God cares and watches us at all times to see whether we will bring him shame or glory through the way we live our lives (Prov. 15:3). 1 B. Security in Christ (Verse 13) The word security mean, safety freedom from worry, or protection. The verse says, And who is he that will harm you. What a question! Peter knew that the believers were being tortured, faced with the sword and even violent deaths at the hand of Nero. Even when facing Nero s chopping block, the understanding is that they would not be harmed, if they continue to follow Christ. 2 17

1. Great U Commission Baptist Church Lesson IV Date: April 24, Peter 3: Suffering: Anything causing pain or distress; calamity. From the biblical viewpoint, affliction began with the entrance of sin into the world. Both mankind and all creation were afflicted with "thorns and thistles," sin, death, and decay (cf. Gn 3:16-19; Rom. 8:18-21). Because of sin, misery is a common human experience, and our short life is full of trouble (Job 14: 1-6). It is impossible for human beings to avoid natural calamity, physical injury, and interpersonal conflict Commentary compiled by Rev. Terrence Howard, All editing and copying by permission only. 3 Tyndale Bible Dictionary All lesson outlines by Rev. Terrence Howard, All editing by Rev. Terrence Howard, 1 Peter 3:13-14 (KJV) 13 And who is he that will harm you, if ye be followers of that which is good? 14 But and if ye suffer for righteousness' sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled; Living for Christ Part 2 1 Peter 3:13-14 (NIV) 13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. "Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened." B. Security in Christ (Verse 13) This word followers, means that of a zealot, one who is zealous. Other translations say this word mean imitators. This is incorrect, from the original manuscript in the Greek this word means a zealot. This word zealous means one who is eager. It takes on the idea of one who is passionate about their pursuit and following whom and what is right. In having this eagerness, you have to adopt the right attitude. A carless attitude toward goodness mean right and good is rebelled against. A selfish attitude toward goodness displays a behavior that one will do right or good as long as they reap the benefits, if they can get something out of it. Then we have the surface attitude. This attitude leads to the behavior to only do good and right when others are looking, but when no one is looking, they begin to live immoral lives (3 John 1:11). 1 (Verse 14) The believer is blessed in the sense of being a recipient of God's favor and grace and living out another dimension of his calling. Still, we have normal human responses to the harm directed toward us as believers. Peter hinted at one of the main responses: Do not fear what they fear; do not be frightened. A better translation of the first part of this sentence would be, "Do not fear their threats or intimidations." Opponents often attempt to intimidate believers to change their "right" behavior or to deny their "right" beliefs. Inherent in "fear" is the suggestion of being put to flight, or running away. The word describes "terror that causes you to flee". In the midst of suffering for doing what is right, believers are sometimes intimidated into running from their belief system or running from their circumstances. Peter's counsel was that they should not allow this to happen. Peter was passionate even when he knew that one day he would be crucified himself (John 21:18-19). Peter, knowing that his death would be violent, did not stop pursuing and following righteousness. 2 18

1. Great Commission Baptist Church Lesson IV Date: April 24, Peter 3: Conscience: The awareness that a proposed act is or is not conformable to one s ideal of right and manifesting itself in the feeling of obligation or duty. The OT usually expresses the idea as having [something] on the heart. Conscience is not so much a distinct faculty of the mind, like perception, memory, etc., as an exercise of the judgment and the power of feeling, as employed with reference to moral truth Commentary compiled by Rev. Terrence Howard, All editing and copying by permission only 3 New Unger's Bible Dictionary All lesson outlines by Rev. Terrence Howard, All editing by Rev. Terrence Howard, 1 Peter 3:15-16 (KJV) 15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: 16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. Living for Christ Part 2 1 Peter 3:15-16 (NIV) 15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. C. Sufferings for Christ (Verse 15) Instead of running away, Christians need a renewed allegiance. Set apart Christ as Lord means "to treat as holy or to regard with reverence. The believer is to view Christ as holy, as worthy of reverence because of who he is. To reverence Christ as Lord means to believe that Jesus Christ is in control and that those who come against the believer are not. To have such reverence is to maintain a deep-seated confidence in Jesus Christ as the reigning Lord of the universe. When our lives are centered on Christ, who is in control of the universe, then we are able to respond properly to the uncertainties and inconsistencies of life. When we have made this commitment, we can respond to harm by communicating a positive word regarding our hope in Christ rather than running away. Even while suffering unjustly, Christians are able to go on because of their hope in the future. We should seize the opportunities of witness presented in these kinds of situations. Our response should be characterized not by smugness or vindictiveness but by gentleness and respect. These words suggest that the believer should approach others carefully and kindly. A Christian should not attempt to ram the truth down someone's throat or to speak patronizingly or critically to them (Col. 1:23). 1 (Verse 16) If we maintain our testimony with gentleness and respect, we can be confident of operating with a clear conscience. This means that we should live in such a way that we won't have to keep looking over our shoulder, hoping that (nxt pg) 2 19
