2 Welcome to Feastg on Word Curriculum! You have accepted call to teach God s people. Teachg is an important callg and mistry. Feastg on Word resources will help you fulfill your callg. You can expect se resources to help you: P Introduce biblical stories new and creative ways. P Gar your community with age-appropriate learng activities. P Challenge your learners to put ir faith to action and grow ir self-understandg as Christians. P Prepare your learners for worship and service of God. About Children Grades (K)1 2 These young learners are movg out from ir families to explore worlds of school and church, and Feastg on Word materials help teachers shape learng experiences that proclaim: You are welcome here! You belong to God and to this church family! Children will explore God s Word ways that engage ir senses, ir emergg skills readg and writg, and ir need to learn by dog. About Children Grades 3 4 Third- and fourth-graders are growg ir desire to jo teams and organizations, and Feastg on Word materials help teachers shape learng experiences that address many ways God s Word shapes identity of members of body of Christ. Older children will use ir Bibles to dig to stories of our faith. This resource will encourage ir love of questions and capitalize on ir desire to feel competent ir academic skills. 3 Session Flow Each session of Feastg on Word Curriculum provides you with a plan for teachg focus scripture age-appropriate ways. Each session assumes a 45-mute period. For a 60-mute session, use more options from Respondg. FOCUS SCRIPTURE Matt. 18:15 20 Focus on Your Teachg Children experience conflict at home and school, and even at church. They are learng that people respond to conflict many ways, some lovg and some not. Today s session offers a strong word about healthy ways to work through conflict. Jesus teaches his disciples carg ways to handle conflict and power of comg toger prayer. Jesus words are a good place for your class to beg your year as a group. From Exegetical Perspective, Mitchell G. Reddish Even though this passage is primarily concerned with matters of church disciple, emphasis throughout is on tryg to reclaim offender, not to punish him or her; this is made clear by context which Matw has placed se verses. Precedg this passage is parable of Lost Sheep (18:10 14), with its emphasis on joy that comes from recoverg one who has gone astray; followg it is Jesus sayg about forgiveness and parable of Unforgivg Debtor (18:21 25), which emphasizes need for unbounded forgiveness. WHERE is God se words? From Theological Perspective, Charles Hambrick-Stowe Jesus sayg verse 18 is susceptible to multiple terpretations. In light of his teachg on life church as locus of God s mission world, and this verse s echo of Lord s Prayer (God s will beg done on earth as it is heaven ), Jesus could mean this: if we church do not forgive and heal, who on earth is gog to do it? If church no matter how small, even just two or three believers will agree Christ and seek prayerfully to do will of God, n God will respond. The church will really be church, because Jesus will be present. SO WHAT does this mean for our lives? From Pastoral Perspective, J S. Kim In this passage, Jesus seems to assume that re will be conflict among his followers. What makes us Christian is not wher or not we fight, disagree, or wound one anor, but how we go about addressg and resolvg those issues. Next to it, place small glasses of colored water, one for each person blue half glasses and yellow ors. Punch two holes an dex card and attach a 24-ch piece of yarn to make a name tag for each person. Decorate your own name tag. Greet children as y arrive. Write each one s name on a name tag, and vite her or him to decorate it. Wear name tags as you learn each or s names. Gar a circle. Invite children, one at a time, to pour a glass of water to bowl as y tell ir name and somethg that y like to do. Beg by pourg a cup of water and tellg somethg you like to do. Noticg how water turns green, say that when you come toger Sunday school, somethg new is created: a community of Jesus followers. Encourage m to look for green church today, as green is church color for this season of year, called Ordary Time or season after Pentecost. Invite learners to pray with you, repeatg each le: God of love, (Clasp hands over heart.) Be with us today. (Raise both arms over head a sweepg motion.) Guide our learng (Pretend to hold a book.) And what we do and say. (Shake hands with person on your right.) Amen. (Fold hands prayer.) Show Color Pack 1, and vite children to tell about what y see happeng. Discuss: P What does Jesus tell his followers to do first if someone does or says somethg to hurt m? Why do you thk Jesus says to do this first? Tell children that you are gog to take turns pretendg to have a disagreement and have or people go with you to talk to a person who has hurt you? P If or person still won t listen, what does Jesus say to do? Who is church? Invite children to recall times y have told someone that y were upset or angry with m: What happened? Comment that sometimes a person won t listen to us, and n or people can help us to talk to her or him. Distribute scissors and tell children to cut four picture squares from resource sheet. Have children put pictures squares with Bible verses to show how this situation might be handled accordg to way that Jesus teaches. Have m check one anor s work and n glue story squares place. Read Matw 18:19 20 from your Bible. Jesus promises us that when we come toger to pray and do God s work, Jesus will be re with us. It is a mystery how this happens, but Jesus promises it is so. Or be unrepentant so that learner needs to ask ors for help. Encourage children to thk of lovg thgs to say or do when anor person apologizes. Contue until every child has had a turn to choose a card. Affirm that we can work and pray toger to solve problems. Pass around basket and ask each child to take one stone. Ask learners to thk quietly If this is first meetg of your class, agree on three or four behavior guideles for your group. 5 Ways of Learng and Teachg In any group, wher children, youth, or adults, many learng styles will be present. You too have preferred ways of learng somethg new. The session plans clude a variety of learng methods so varieties of learner styles are cluded durg each season. We tend to teach with methods that are most familiar to or comfortable for us. From time to time, clude activities that challenge you so you are cludg learners who prefer to learn that way.
