3 Hymns For The Deaf Copyright SWM Introduction Music is a very important part of church services. Done properly, music leads the church into a worshipful spirit. It teaches doctrine and emphasizes what has been taught. It prepares the heart to receive the preaching of the Word of God. Often deaf people only tolerate the music service. Many interpreters are not trained how to interpret songs or to express music in a meaningful way. Some interpreters get ideas from outside the church which can harm the music rather than help it. Yet, Sign Language is one of the most beautiful ways to express the great hymns of the faith. Often people who do not know Signs comment how meaningful the songs are when expressed on the hands. Many have asked if there is a way to write what is signed, so another signer could perform the song the same way. Doing so would help standardize the interpretation so deaf people could memorize hymns in Sign Language. At present, each interpreter has "his" or "her" interpretation of each hymn, making it difficult for deaf people to even recognize some hymns. Since 1984 we have started deaf ministries all across America in large and small churches. One of the first requests from new interpreters is for a "Deaf Hymnal." This work is an outgrowth from those requests. Since ASL is not a written language, it is impossible to write every movement, but we have tried to write music in a way that can be easily signed. Signing only what is on these pages will not make good music for the deaf. There is much that could not be written. Music for the deaf is more than just signing the words for songs and hymns. Each work must be interpreted to express the meaning of the words in a musical way. There is more freedom in interpreting music than in interpreting the spoken word. Many interpreters do not understand some of the traditional hymns, so they cannot accurately interpret them. The guidelines to follow explain the methods used. We understand this is not a perfect work. Much improvement is needed. The signer still must add to these interpretations to make them clear and meaningful. That may never change. We trust this will be a helpful resource for you. We acknowledge that we have fallen far short of clearly penning what is in our mind and on our hands. We are always looking for better ways to express hymns, so your constructive suggestions are welcomed. Your interpretations of other songs are encouraged. 4 Hymns For The Deaf In American Sign Language Since Sign Language is visual and not a written language, the words used in these hymns are normally the gloss word which should be signed. Usually word tenses are omitted in favor of the root word. While trying to stay as close as possible to the English song, we often use a more "ASL" sign order. In many figurative phrases we have substituted more clear wording, as well. Sometimes the figure of speech is lost, but the meaning should be clear. We trust this work will help make music more meaningful for Deaf people. Instructions For Using This Hymnal 1. You will need to purchase a three-ring binder with a plastic insert on front cover. Insert our front cover page into the front of the binder. Place remaining pages in the 3-ring binder in the order the hymns appear in your church hymnal. 2. Number the pages in the upper right hand corner to correspond with your church hymnal. This makes it much easier to find a hymn quickly. 3. Placing the pages in protective plastic sleeves is not recommended, because it can triple the size of the notebook required. Also it prevents making notes on the pages when needed. 4. Choruses are only printed once, after the first verse of a song. (Normally the chorus is sung after each verse.) 5. Verses are not numbered. Some hymnals do not include all verses. Others add additional ones. You should number the verses to match your hymnal. 6. A description of the proper sign is only given if it is not listed in the American Sign Language Dictionary (Sternberg) or if the choice of sign would influence the meaning. There is no way for us to discuss all regional variations, so the best general sign is chosen. Naturally, we assume the signer has a basic understanding of ASL. 7. ALL CAPS for pronouns like YOU, HE, HIM, etc., refer to God or Christ. Sign them slightly up, to the right side, and forward, as if signing to the upper back corner of the room. This should be natural and not too high. Look at the same place each time. If you have difficulty, pick a light, fixture on a wall, or some other object on which to focus your attention when referring to God and Jesus. 8. All UNDERLINED CAPS like YOU, HE, HIM, etc., should be signed with a flat hand, palm up, fingers pointing outward. 9. OTHER ALL CAPS should also be signed up and to the right. At the very least, the signer's eyes should look up. 10. Hyphenated words are several English words which can be signed with just one sign. Examples are "give-you", "look-at-god", and "don't-know". 11. Hyphenated words including ALL CAPS show subject-object relationships involving Deity. For example, "bring-jesus" means sign the word "bring" up toward Jesus; "GIVE-me" means the sign moves from Heaven to me. 12. Italicized words refer to words which may not be found in an ASL dictionary. Most of the time they may be pantomimed using natural gestures.

5 13. The words "I" and "me" can be signed with a bent flat hand, fingertips touching chest, palm in (like "have"), and moved down somewhat. This is called the "honorific" sign. 14. The symbol "//" indicates a change in the direction of signing. Sometimes a particular direction is shown (i.e. "R-" for "right" and "L-" for "left") while at others the direction is left to the signer. 15. Words in parentheses ( ) may be signed, but are not required. 16. Do not sign the words in brackets [ ]. They are to help you understand what is meant. 17. Directional Signing: "L-" means sign toward left, "R-" means sign toward right, "C-" means sign toward center, "I-" means sign "in" (close to body), and "O-" means sign "out" (away from body). Unless otherwise noted, sign center and to audience. Sometimes the direction is L- (facing left) but a word in the sentence is capitalized (HE). This means to continue to face your body left, but make a slight turn right and sign briefly toward heaven. 18. Good and God are always signed to right, bad and Devil are always signed to left. This will help avoid confusion. Everyone should use this pattern so directional signing is easy to understand. 19. Do not get too involved in the directions shown in this hymnal. Simply think about what the verses are saying and use directions to help them make sense. 20. The signer should improve upon what is seen here. Every person signs differently. This work is intended to help the signer who is new to church music, not to be an authoritative end in itself. Develop the ideas presented here into more clear pictures.
