St Albans Cathedral stands over the place where Alban, Britain s first saint, was buried after giving his life for his faith over 1700 years ago. It is the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain and home to St Alban s shrine, world-class medieval wall paintings and an amazing mix of architectural styles that bear witness to many centuries of its life. In 2016 we welcomed over 200,000 visitors, pilgrims and worshippers who came to experience the unique atmosphere and beauty of this place for themselves.

FROM THE DEAN I have always enjoyed grumbling about fundraising, so it was a shock to find that when the fundraising phase of the Alban Britain s First Saint project ended, having exceeded its target halfway through the year, I missed it. But then, who wouldn t miss travelling Vice-Chairman, and Gerald will continue as around so many lovely houses of lovely hosts Chairman. The Foundation will maintain in Herts and Beds, drinking champagne and the network of support and friendship munching canapés, and all for the pleasure built up by the Appeal, and, working with of telling a lot of kind and interesting guests the Music and Education Trusts, will about our plans for the Cathedral? co-ordinate our fundraising for the future. It was a dream, and it worked because the fundraising was backed by such a wonderful Board and team of ambassadors, led by Gerald Corbett, with his extraordinary gift We are extremely grateful for the warmth and enthusiasm of everyone s continued willingness to help. These are strange days for cathedrals. The Dean The Very Revd Dr Jeffrey John of making meetings entertaining as well Everyone agrees that cathedrals are the as efficient; and also because everything success story of the C of E, at a time was sustained and guided by the skill when decline in the dioceses is alarming. 7 A PLACE OF WORSHIP Worship of God is our primary duty and honour as Christians and the purpose for which our ancient and beautiful Cathedral was constructed has certainly been a year where we have put the Cathedral to its proper use. During the course of the year: we welcomed 46 children and adults through baptism; the bishops confirmed 99 people; we admitted 20 children to Holy Communion; we celebrated 23 weddings and blessings; and we committed the departed to God and supported the bereaved through 30 funerals and memorial services. Amid the hustle and bustle of a busy world, this quiet spiritual place, makes you feel closer to God. THE YEAR OF 2016 IN BRIEF At the beginning of the year we welcomed our new Precentor, the Revd Dr Berkeley Zych, much to the relief of the Sub Dean who had been doing two jobs for half of the previous year, and on St Joseph s Day we welcomed our new Residentiary Canon and Diocesan Director of Mission, Canon Tim Lomax. 11

Annual Review 2016 During Holy Week, our Preacher, the former Dean of York, the Very Revd Keith Jones, took us through the experiences of the characters around Jesus as he approached his crucifixion, drawing us deeper into the story of Jesus s life, death and resurrection. Then, on Easter Day, the new Precentor s mettle was tested as we hosted the BBC for a live broadcast of our celebrations. It was a testament to the dedication and hard work of all our staff and volunteers that our worship over the course of Holy Week and Easter Day ran so smoothly despite all the extra work and pressure of hosting television and support crews. The Easter Day Eucharist was a great occasion and the Cathedral had lots of positive inquiries about the service and the youth work here as a result. Between Ascension and Pentecost, the Cathedral joined with churches across the country in the Archbishops initiative, Thy Kingdom Come, praying with the whole family of God for the empowerment of the Holy Spirit and that we may be effective witnesses to Christ. Over the Alban Pilgrimage weekend hundreds gathered to celebrate, and this year the Knights of the Order of Ss David, Alban and Crescentino gifted the Cathedral with a relic of Saint Amphibalus. This relic will be placed in the restored shrine of Saint Amphibalus as part of the Alban, Britain s First Saint project. In June we celebrated 150 years of Reader Ministry and Bishop Michael admitted seven new people to the office of Reader. Then, during Petertide, hundreds gathered from Parishes across the Diocese as Bishop Alan ordained 16 new Deacons and 11 new Priests. In October we held our Harvest celebrations to coincide with the St Albans Food & Drink Festival, which was a great success. We also updated our Parish Eucharist second Sunday service to include the children more fully in our worship: having them help proclaim the Gospel and gather around the altar during the Eucharistic Prayer. The year culminated with our Christmas celebrations. This year we had record numbers, reaching over 8000 people through Carols on the Hour alone, not to mention all our other services. THANK YOU Thank you for the hard work, throughout the year, of our servers, musicians, ringers, PA operators, virgers, stewards, marshals, welcomers, wardens, clerk of works, readers, intercessors, support staff, day chaplains and ecumenical chaplains, textile guild, flower guild, cleaners, all of whom are essential to the worshiping life of the Cathedral. Without their service our services would be diminished

A PLACE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE One thing that makes our Cathedral stand out across the country is our work with children and young people. This year increased our reputation as 2016 saw all our children and youth groups grow in membership and attendance. It was also the first year for our newest youth group, The Abbey Squad, which has become a popular group drawing from the upper section of the Sunday Club, Xcite and the ex-choristers. Some of the many events run for young people this year included: The Abbey Squad, for year olds. Walsingham Youth Pilgrimage ended our first year on a high note and had a huge spiritual impact on those who attended. The group looks forward to a second trip. Xcite, for 8-12 year olds. In addition to the mixed programme of events held every year, we had a number of this group attend the Walsingham Children s Pilgrimage for the second year running. 15

Tea and Toast, our after school group for younger primary school children. This year followed a programme looking at the parables of Jesus. The Sunday Club covered topics including The Nave Martyrs, an overview of the Old Testament and an overview of the New Testament. We also focused our provision for children during services by dividing the Happy Bags into age groups and ensuring the majority of our books are bible-based. The Abbey Kids sheets continue to be successful, providing children with colouring and puzzles based on the Sunday lectionary and seasonal calendar. The Good Friday Workshop trialled a change in pattern and location which led to a successful morning as 72 children followed the Stations of the Cross. We maintain a good link with our uniformed groups and extended this when our Youth Chaplain the Revd Sally Jones became Chaplain to the Sea Cadets and Royal Marines at TS St Albans, Westminster Lodge. All these activities support our focused mission to continue to increase young people s involvement in the Cathedral and to grow and develop the youth section of our congregations, as identified in our Mission Action Plan. A huge thank you to all who have given their time and talents to supporting these groups over the past year. The community is really lovely and so helpful. 16

Annual Review 2016 A PLACE OF MUSIC Highlights of the year for the Cathedral Choir started in January with a workshop and concert performance in the Cathedral with the King s Singers, alongside members of the Abbey Singers and choirs from St Albans School. SUSTAINING MUSIC AT THE CATHEDRAL The St Albans Cathedral Music Trust continues to support all aspects of the Cathedral s musical life, through the generosity of the Music Patrons, the events programme, donations and endowments. In 2016 the Trust donated over 123,000 to the Cathedral, including a grant of 48,000 for new pianos made possible by a generous legacy left to the Trust. The Music Trust continues to work to raise an endowment fund to further safeguard the Cathedral s music into the future. Thank you to all who have given their support. In February, the choir gave its annual concert sponsored by the Music Trust, this year in All Saints Church, Hertford. In March, the Cathedral Choir sang on live TV in the BBC1 broadcast of the Easter Day Eucharist; and in July along with the Abbey Girls Choir and Abbey Singers, they combined with St Albans Bach Choir and The English Concert to perform J S Bach s Mass in B minor in the Cathedral, sponsored by the Cathedral Music Trust. In December, the boys of the Cathedral Choir and the Abbey Girls Choir participated in the John Rutter Christmas Concert with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) in the Royal Albert Hall and Birmingham Symphony Hall. A recording made in 2014 of John Rutter s Psalmfest was released on the Naxos label in May, featuring the Cathedral Choir, the Abbey Girls Choir and the Abbey Singers with the RPO, made possible by a legacy from Dr John Birch. The Abbey Girls Choir recorded items for the BBC Songs of Praise at Easter and a recording of music by William Mathias with the Lay Clerks and Orchestra Nova for Naxos was released. The Abbey Girls Choir celebrated its 20th anniversary with a special service in the Cathedral and were joined by the Lay Clerks and a good number of ex-choristers. Current girl choristers gave the first performance of Holy Innocents by Judith Weir, the Master of the Queen s Music, sponsored by the Ex-Choristers Association. The girls also gave concerts and sang services on a short tour to Paris in May. The Abbey Singers, former choristers of the two choirs, sang a couple of times each term at the Parish Eucharist and took part in the Choral Evensong during Holy Week and in late Advent, performed in the Bach Mass and King s Singers concerts, as well as in the Carols on the Hour services at Christmas time. The Parish Singers, the Parish Junior Singers and the Parish Orchestra provided regular music at the Parish Eucharist. Organ Scholar Nicholas Freestone leapt into stardom via the internet with his performance of David Bowie s classic Life on Mars on the Cathedral organ. In January, Malcolm Bury, Chairman of the Ex-Choristers Association, published his history of the choirs here, Alban Notes: The Choirs and Musicians of St Albans Cathedral

A PLACE OF LEARNING Much work this year has been done in developing our future plans of activity and interpretation for the Alban Britain s First Saint project, ensuring that it will deliver a step change in opening up and diversifying the long tradition of learning at St Albans Cathedral. At the same time, our regular education programmes have continued to flourish, making it a busy year for learning. SCHOOLS Over 13,900 pupils were welcomed in 2016, carrying out over 22,500 trails related to the national curriculum. This does not include the many schools that came for special services through the year. Volunteers are essential to our schools work, with over 25 attending a training day this year. The Cathedral held its 18th Sixth-Form debate, Speak your Mind, this time in a new partnership with the University of Hertfordshire. With the local Masorti Synagogue we hosted a Jewish Living and Learning Exhibition which was very well received and brought in new schools and visitors. 20 What a beautiful place, so spiritual, sacred and breathtaking.

Annual Review 2016 ADULT LEARNING Over 3,200 students attended courses, study days, and other events over the academic year. The certificate course is now being offered at St Andrew s Church, Bedford, through the Cathedral s learning department. Highlights for 2016 included: a sell-out day on Donatello; a packed crypt for the Canon Scientist s lecture, God, the Big Bang, and Stephen Hawking ; the Dean s most popular lecture yet on the subject of death; a Come and Sing Rutter Requiem; and national coverage for our Latin courses in The Guardian. FAMILIES Over 1350 children and adults attended events during school holidays another record. Particularly popular were events based on classic children s books Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Winnie the Pooh, Peter Rabbit and Paddington Bear. SUSTAINING LEARNING AT THE CATHEDRAL The St Albans Cathedral Education Trust supports all areas of learning at the Cathedral, including our work with schools, groups and families, the Study Centre and the Cathedral Library. The Trust manages funds held in support of Cathedral learning and also seeks to raise further funds both to increase this endowment for the future, and to enable specific learning projects in the shorter term

A PLACE FOR HERITAGE The UK at its historical best. Ongoing maintenance is critical to sustaining our 900-year-old building and protecting the heritage of this place for the future. Alongside everyday repairs and care, major projects in the past year have included: DIGGING FOR HISTORY The first stages of our Alban, Britain s First Saint project were visible during an archaeological dig in Sumpter Yard in November. A team from Canterbury Archaeological Trust was on site in the autumn to investigate the location of the new welcome centre. Working with the Cathedral s archaeologist, Professor Martin Biddle, the team hoped to learn more about the architecture of the medieval buildings that stood there, to protect the archaeology and burials during building work and to ensure solid foundations for the new building. Further archaeological work will take place in 2017 before construction work begins on the site. THE OLD DEANERY Work on the Victorian Deanery was carried out over the summer, to make this impressive building suitable for office and conference use and provide new rooms for parish meetings. This in turn has freed up space within the Chapter House to make way for the new learning and welcome facilities planned as part of the Alban, Britain s First Saint development next year. Our thanks go to Borras Construction for their support with these works. TREVELYAN PRIZE COMMENDATION FOR THE WEST PORCHES At the end of 2016, St Albans Cathedral received the St Albans Civic Society s Trevelyan Prize Commendation for the cleaning and restoration of the Cathedral s west front, a major project completed in 2015 which transformed the Cathedral s great entrance made possible by a grant from the First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund. Cliveden Conservation and Richard Griffiths Architects were recognised as part of this prestigious award for their exceptional conservation and restoration work on the project. STONEWORK CONSERVATION We are delighted that we will be able to continue our programme of care for the ancient fabric of the Cathedral with the support of a second grant from the First World War Centenary Cathedral Repairs Fund and a donation from the Headley Trust. Our focus will be on the conservation and repair of original stonework, much of which is medieval, in three areas where the fabric has been specifically identified as at risk by the Cathedral Architect: the external walls of the Lady Chapel; the Chapel of Transfiguration at the east end; and the South Cloisters, on the south external wall of the Cathedral. This vital work will take place in summer

A PLACE TO VISIT Awarded a Certificate of Excellence Award from Trip Advisor and Quality Assured status from Visit England, the Cathedral has enjoyed a bumper year for visitors, bolstered by a rich events programme, a rise in group visits and significant tourism developments across the region. Visitor numbers passed the 200,000 mark this year with an increase in day visitors and tours. Record numbers have attended special services and sellout events. October was a particularly eclectic month with a special concert by the Zombies, St Albans Fashion Week and a unique performance by the Osiligi Maasai Warriors. 26

Annual Review 2016 Our guide was fantastic. Record numbers were also recorded at: The annual Fireworks Spectacular, which raised over 10,000 for the Special Olympics St Albans; The ever popular Carols on the Hour with performances from local choirs; The programme of children s events during the summer holidays celebrating children s literature. The Cathedral played host to a number of heated debates during the year the temperature rose dramatically in June as local people came together to discuss Brexit; students questioned a selected panel at the annual Sixth-Form debate, Speak your Mind, supported by the University of Herts; and BBC Security Correspondent, Frank Gardner, gave a fascinating talk and Q&A session as part of the St Albans Literary Festival. GOING VIRAL The number of followers across our social media accounts continues to rise, with healthy audience numbers across the board. The social media highlight of 2016 was organ scholar Nicholas Freestone s David Bowie Tribute which gained the Cathedral s Facebook page 4477 likes in one day. The video itself has had over four million views to date, with 53,000 likes, 5000 comments, as well as 243,623 views on YouTube. TV & RADIO COVERAGE Once more, the Cathedral appeared on high profile programmes throughout the year, including the BBC1 Easter Sunday Live Broadcast, Songs of Praise, A Question of Sport, Mary Berry s Easter Feast and a Heritage Crimewatch Special. A series of radio interviews was also broadcast on BBC3Counties highlighting the different aspects of life at the Cathedral. EXPERT GUIDES As ever, our team of expert guides have provided a full programme of daily tours this year, engaging visitors with the fascinating history of the Cathedral. Recent TripAdvisor praise has included: Brilliant guide, Brought the place to life and Amazing knowledge. A BOOST FOR TOURISM The Cathedral is now a partner of the new tourism service for Hertfordshire, Visit Herts, which works with attractions, accommodation and destinations across the county to promote Hertfordshire to local, national and international visitors. Together with the Cathedral s own marketing team, this service ensures the Cathedral is at the forefront of tourism initiatives, raising the profile of the Cathedral and attracting new audiences

Annual Review 2016 THE FUTURE: ALBAN, BRITAIN S FIRST SAINT 2016 was a major milestone year for the Cathedral s future as we secured full funding and permissions to begin delivery of the Alban, Britain s First Saint: Telling the Whole Story project. This is the biggest development undertaken since the Chapter House was built in the 1980s, and one which will transform our welcome, heritage and learning. The project will enable us to tell the whole story of Alban and the beautiful Cathedral built in his name in a new and innovative way which will draw in many more people. Visitors will be welcomed in a brand-new welcome centre with vastly improved visitor facilities. We will create new, accessible learning spaces for schools, families, adults and our library within the Chapter House. The Cathedral s stunning collection of medieval wall paintings will be re-presented with illuminations and we will restore the ruined medieval shrine of St Amphibalus, as well as developing an exciting programme of activities that will engage visitors with our heritage. Working with the City s new museum project and visitor strategy, we will make St Albans a first-choice destination for tourists and pilgrims alike. The support of the Heritage Lottery Fund is essential to enable our 7m vision. A development grant in 2014 supported the two-year development phase which concluded in summer Milestones over the year included: The major fundraising appeal, led by a board of volunteers and chaired by our long-term supporter Gerald Corbett, succeeded in raising over 3m for the project, thanks to the generous support of the congregation, private donors and the Friends of St Albans Abbey along with trusts and foundations, the local community and local businesses over 1000 donors in total. Approval for the project was attained during the early months of the year from the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England following comprehensive consultation with Historic England, the Fabric Advisory Committee and The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings among many others. Planning permission was granted by the St Albans City and District Planning Authority following a well-attended public Planning Referrals meeting in early July. A major grant of 3.9m was announced by the Heritage Lottery Fund at the end of July which, along with the 3m matched funding, signalled the final green light for the project. Autumn and winter 2016 were spent finalising design details and beginning the preparatory behind-the-scenes works, including: archaeological investigations on the site of the new welcome centre; establishing working parties on interpretation, activity planning and communications; building new and temporary structures to provide capacity during the Chapter House closure; and carrying out enabling works to power, IT, telephones and alarms systems. There will inevitably be some level of disruption as the construction work begins, but business will continue very much as usual throughout the delivery phase. We are grateful to all the donors, volunteers and staff who have worked so hard to bring us to this point and continue to help us as we work towards our final goal of sharing widely the inspirational story of Alban and this special place

A PLACE OF FINANCIAL GROWTH Income growth and diversification are at the core of how we think and operate financially. Back in 2013 we embarked on our three-year investing for growth financial strategy, prioritising spend towards ministry and future growth saw the Cathedral deliver on this strategy with an operating surplus of 24,000. Over the last three years we have increased our marketing and visitor welcome resource, funded long overdue improvements to our properties and invested in our much-needed support services. Alongside this intentional investment, our spending in ministry, music and mission has continued to increase in real terms. We have been able to achieve financial growth through a focus on every area of the Cathedral s income and spend, expanding and deepening the many ways we use our wonderful building has seen our visitor donations increase by almost 50,000 and the combined trading profit from our shop and café increase by 30,000. We continue steadfast in our financial discipline of taking one-off income and legacies to reserves. This helps bolster our financial resilience against the inevitable one-off expenditure faced by any charity of our heritage, complexity and size. In 2016 we spent almost 0.6m on major fabric works, completing the reordering of the quire and the improvement works to bring the new Deanery Offices into existence, all carried out within budget. Work of this scale is only possible through a combination of major grants, legacies and individual donors. It costs over 5,000 a day to keep the Cathedral open and sustain its ministry. We know we need to build our financial capacity to fund ongoing fabric repairs and maintenance. Like other charities we face a backdrop of increasing national economic uncertainty. The delivery of Alban, Britain s First Saint is a key step in securing our financial sustainability. The next three years may bring financial ups and downs, but the Cathedral s financial foundation is one of confidence, growth and resilience. 33
