THE HOLY EUCHARIST, RITE II All Saints Sunday November 4, :00 a.m. Grace Episcopal Church 4040 West Bellfort Avenue Houston, Texas graceinhouston.org

Welcome to Grace! Here is some information you may find helpful while you are with us. Worship: We often use the word liturgy to describe our worship. Liturgy comes from a Greek word that is loosely translated to mean the works of the people. When we gather for worship, we bring all that we are, all the places we have been, all the things we ve seen, all the works we have done everything! and gather it up into an expression of worship that we can share in common. We use historic and ancient rites to guide our worship together, found in The Book of Common Prayer. (The BCP is the red book in each pew.) Ritual: We generally stand to sing and to hear the Gospel. During prayers, some people prefer to stand, others to sit, and other to kneel. Some people make the sign of the cross on themselves, bow, hold their palms upwards in front of them, or engage in other personally meaningful actions during the service. The Songs We Sing: We sing songs of praise and worship from many cultures, eras, and traditions. Much of our music is included in this bulletin. Hymns that are not printed here can be found in the blue hymnal in each pew. Sometimes we sing the Lord s Prayer, and some folks hold hands. Do only what feels comfortable to you. At Communion: All are welcome to receive Holy Communion! To receive a blessing instead of bread and wine, please join others at the front of the church and cross arms over your chest. Ushers will help us know the appropriate time to move forward. Healing Prayer: People are available to pray personally with you. If you desire prayers for healing, folks will offer prayers and anointing with oil in the small chapel near the entrance to the Church. Please go after receiving Communion for this ministry. There isn t just one right way to participate. Please do what feels right to you! Want to know more? Please fill out a Welcome Card (found in the pew next to hymnals and prayer books). If you share your contact information, we will reach out to invite you to coffee for conversation. Nursery and Children s Chapel: The nursery is open on Sunday during the 10:00 am service. Staff members are there to welcome children from birth through age 3. The nursery is directly adjacent to the Gathering Area. Children s Chapel takes place during the service. The Children will process out together at the Gospel and return before Holy Communion.. Extra Info: Restrooms: Exit the main side doors, walk into the Gathering Area, and turn right down the hall. Restrooms will be on your right. Persons with Disabilities: If you would like to receive Communion but cannot come to the altar, please let an usher know so the Sacraments can be brought to you. Parking: Parking is available in two lots, from West Bellfort and Woodwind Drive. And COFFEE!!! Please join us for coffee and refreshments after the service. We gather in the Parish Hall and would love to meet you! 2

The Collect of the Day (Please stand or kneel as able) God be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. 3 For all the Saints Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. (Children may process to Children s Chapel)

The First Lesson (Please be seated) The Wisdom of Solomon 3:1-9 Reader: A reading from the book of Solomon The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and no torment will ever touch them. In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from us to be their destruction; but they are at peace. For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality. Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself; like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them. In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them forever. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect. Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. The Psalm (Please be seated) Psalm 24 (Spoken responsively, by half verse) 1 The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it, * the world and all who dwell therein. 2 For it is he who founded it upon the seas * and made it firm upon the rivers of the deep. 3 "Who can ascend the hill of the Lord? " * and who can stand in his holy place?" 4 "Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, * who have not pledged themselves to falsehood, nor sworn by what is a fraud. 5 They shall receive a blessing from the Lord * and a just reward from the God of their salvation." 6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, * of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. 7 Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; * and the King of glory shall come in. 8 "Who is this King of glory?" * "The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle." 9 Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; * and the King of glory shall come in. 10 "Who is he, this King of glory?" * "The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory." 4

The Second Lesson Reader: A reading from the book of Revelation Revelation 21:1-6a I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them as their God; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away." And the one who was seated on the throne said, "See, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true." Then he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end."to God, purify our conscience from dead works to worship the living God! Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. Sequence Song (Please stand as able) Peace in the Midst of the Storm 5

The Gospel John 11:32-44 (All standing as able, the Priest reads the Gospel, first saying) The Sermon The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ. When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?" Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days." Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?" So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, "Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me." When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go." Priest: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Presentation and Examination of the Candidates (The Candidates, Parents, and Godparents stand) (The Celebrant says) The Candidate for Holy Baptism will now be presented. Canon Mary McGregor (Then the candidate who is unable to answer for himself is presented individually by his Parents and Godparents, as follows) Parents and Godparents: I present Rada Hickman to receive the Sacrament of Baptism. (When he has been presented the Celebrant asks the parents and godparents) Will you be responsible for seeing that the child you present is brought up in the Christian faith and life? Parents and Godparents: I will, with God's help. Will you by your prayers and witness help this child to grow into the full stature of Christ? Parents and Godparents: I will, with God's help. 7

(Then the Celebrant asks the following questions of the candidate and of the parents and godparents who speak on behalf of the child) Question: Answer: Question: Answer: Question: Answer: Question: Answer: Question: Answer: Question: Answer: Do you renounce Satan and all the spiritual forces of wickedness that rebel against God? I renounce them. Do you renounce the evil powers of this world which corrupt and destroy the creatures of God? I renounce them. Do you renounce all sinful desires that draw you from the love of God? We will. The Baptismal Covenant (Please remain standing) (The Celebrant then says) Let us join with those who are committing themselves to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. 8

(A Person appointed leads the following petitions) Leader: Leader: Leader: Leader: Leader: Leader: Leader: (The Celebrant says) Deliver her, O Lord, from the way of sin and death. Lord, hear our prayer. Open her heart to your grace and truth. Lord, hear our prayer. Fill her with your holy and life-giving Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer. Keep her in the faith and communion of your holy Church. Lord, hear our prayer. Teach her to love others in the power of the Spirit. Lord, hear our prayer. Send her into the world in witness to your love. Lord, hear our prayer. Bring her to the fullness of your peace and glory. Lord, hear our prayer. Grant, O Lord, that all who are baptized into the death of Jesus Christ your Son may live in the power of his resurrection and look for him to come again in glory; who lives and reigns now and for ever. Amen. 9

Thanksgiving over the Water (Please remain standing) (The Celebrant blesses the water, first saying) The Lord be with you. (The Celebrant continues) And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. (At the following words, the Celebrant touches the water) Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. The Baptism (Please remain standing) (The candidate is presented by name to the Celebrant, or to an assisting priest or deacon, who then pours water upon the candidate, saying) Rada, I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. (Then the Priest places a hand on the person s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross and saying to each one) Rada, you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ s own for ever. Amen. (The Priest, at a place in full sight of the congregation, prays over them, saying) Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon your servant the forgiveness of sin, and have raised her to the new life of grace. Sustain her, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give her an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. (When all have been baptized, the Celebrant says) Let us welcome the newly baptized. All: Hymn 490 We receive you into the household of God. Confess the faith of Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, and share with us in his eternal priesthood. I Want to Walk As a Child of the Light 10

The Peace (Please stand as able) The peace of Christ be always with you. And also with you. (The people greet one another) Announcements (Please be seated) Blessings for Birthdays & Anniversaries O God, our times are in your hand: Look with favor, we pray, on your servants N. as they begin another year. Grant that they may grow in wisdom and grace, and strengthen their trust in your goodness all the days of their life; through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen. The Offertory (Please be seated) Hymn 529 The Doxology (The People stand as able while singing) tune of Old Hundredth Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise God, all creatures here below. Praise God above, ye heavenly Hosts. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer D (The people standing as able) (Celebrant says) (Then, the Celebrant proceeds) The Holy Communion The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. In Christ there is no east or west It is truly right to glorify you, Holy One, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and for ever. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance. Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your Name, as we sing, 11

Sanctus (Please stand or kneel as able. The Celebrant continues) We acclaim you, holy God, glorious in power. Your mighty works reveal your wisdom and love. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into our care, so that, in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your creatures. When our disobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to the power of death. In your mercy you came to our help, so that in seeking you we might find you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you, and through the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation Holy God, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your only Son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, Jesus lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfill your purpose Jesus gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the whole creation new. And that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for Christ who died and rose for us, you sent the Holy Spirit, your own first gift for those who believe, to complete your work in the world, and to bring to fulfillment the sanctification of all. When the hour had come for Jesus to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end; at supper with them Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper Jesus took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you. This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Almighty God, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ s death and descent among the dead, proclaiming Christ s resurrection and ascension to your right hand, awaiting Christ s coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you have given us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you. All: We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you, and we pray to you, Lord our God. 12

God our Creator, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend upon us, and upon these gifts, sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of your Name. Remember, Lord, your one holy catholic and apostolic Church, redeemed by the blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard its faith, and preserve it in peace. Remember all who minister in your Church. Remember all your people, and those who seek your truth. Remember Betty, Lisa, Colin, Jeanette, Aaliyah, Everett, Norma, Cody, Merlin, Randy, Mercy, Reggie, and those we now name. (pause for others to be named) Remember all who have died in the peace of Christ, and those whose faith is known to you alone; bring them into the place of eternal joy and light. And grant that we may find our inheritance with all the saints who have found favor with you in ages past. We praise you in union with them and give you glory through Jesus Christ our Savior. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours, Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen. The Lord s Prayer As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, The Breaking of the Bread (The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept) 13

Fraction Anthem (Facing the People, the Celebrant says) The Gifts of God for the People of God. (The Ministers receive the Sacrament, and then immediately deliver it to the People) Communion Music (Please be seated) Anthem There Is a Balm in Gilead 14

Song Laus Trinitati 15

Song Nada Te Turbe The Post-Communion Prayer Let us pray. (Please stand or kneel as able) All: Eternal God, you have graciously accepted us as living members of our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Savior. Amen. The Blessing (The Celebrant blesses the people.) May God, who has given us in the lives of the saints patterns of holy living and victorious dying, strengthen your faith and devotion, and enable you to bear witness to the truth against all adversity. And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you and remain with you for ever. Amen. Song When the Saints The Dismissal Priest: Let us go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Spirit. Thanks be to God. 16
