THE HOLY EUCHARIST, RITE II The Twenty-Sixth Sunday after Pentecost November 18, :00 a.m. Grace Episcopal Church 4040 West Bellfort Avenue Houston, Texas graceinhouston.org

Welcome to Grace! Here is some information you may find helpful while you are with us. Worship: We often use the word liturgy to describe our worship. Liturgy comes from a Greek word that is loosely translated to mean the works of the people. When we gather for worship, we bring all that we are, all the places we have been, all the things we ve seen, all the works we have done everything! and gather it up into an expression of worship that we can share in common. We use historic and ancient rites to guide our worship together, found in The Book of Common Prayer. (The BCP is the red book in each pew.) Ritual: We generally stand to sing and to hear the Gospel. During prayers, some people prefer to stand, others to sit, and other to kneel. Some people make the sign of the cross on themselves, bow, hold their palms upwards in front of them, or engage in other personally meaningful actions during the service. The Songs We Sing: We sing songs of praise and worship from many cultures, eras, and traditions. Much of our music is included in this bulletin. Hymns that are not printed here can be found in the blue hymnal in each pew. Sometimes we sing the Lord s Prayer, and some folks hold hands. Do only what feels comfortable to you. At Communion: All are welcome to receive Holy Communion! To receive a blessing instead of bread and wine, please join others at the front of the church and cross arms over your chest. Ushers will help us know the appropriate time to move forward. Healing Prayer: People are available to pray personally with you. If you desire prayers for healing, folks will offer prayers and anointing with oil in the small chapel near the entrance to the Church. Please go after receiving Communion for this ministry. There isn t just one right way to participate. Please do what feels right to you! Want to know more? Please fill out a Welcome Card (found in the pew next to hymnals and prayer books). If you share your contact information, we will reach out to invite you to coffee for conversation. Nursery and Children s Chapel: The nursery is open on Sunday during the 10:00 am service. Staff members are there to welcome children from birth through age 3. The nursery is directly adjacent to the Gathering Area. Children s Chapel takes place during the service. The Children will process out together at the Gospel and return before Holy Communion.. Extra Info: Restrooms: Exit the main side doors, walk into the Gathering Area, and turn right down the hall. Restrooms will be on your right. Persons with Disabilities: If you would like to receive Communion but cannot come to the altar, please let an usher know so the Sacraments can be brought to you. Parking: Parking is available in two lots, from West Bellfort and Woodwind Drive. And COFFEE!!! Please join us for coffee and refreshments after the service. We gather in the Parish Hall and would love to meet you! 2

Prelude Welcome Hymn 397 THE HOLY EUCHARIST, RITE II, WITH EXPANSIVE LANGUAGE The Twenty-Sixth Sunday after Pentecost November 18, :00 a.m. Opening Acclamation (Please stand as able) Blessed be God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God s reign, now and for ever. Amen. Now thank we all our God Gloria (Please stand as able) Machu Pichu The Collect of the Day (Please stand or kneel as able) God be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (Children may process to Children s Chapel) The First Lesson (Please be seated) 1 Samuel 1:4-20 Reader: A reading from the book of First Samuel. On the day when Elkanah sacrificed, he would give portions to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters; but to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the Lord had closed her womb. Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the Lord had closed her womb. So it went on year by year; as often as she went up to the house of the Lord, she used to provoke her. Therefore Hannah wept and would not eat. Her husband Elkanah said to her, Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart sad? Am I not more to you than ten sons? After they had eaten and drunk at Shiloh, Hannah rose and presented herself before the Lord. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord. She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord, and wept bitterly. 3

She made this vow: O Lord of hosts, if only you will look on the misery of your servant, and remember me, and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a male child, then I will set him before you as a nazirite until the day of his death. He shall drink neither wine nor intoxicants, and no razor shall touch his head. As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was praying silently; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard; therefore Eli thought she was drunk. So Eli said to her, How long will you make a drunken spectacle of yourself? Put away your wine. But Hannah answered, No, my lord, I am a woman deeply troubled; I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I have been pouring out my soul before the Lord. Do not regard your servant as a worthless woman, for I have been speaking out of my great anxiety and vexation all this time. Then Eli answered, Go in peace; the God of Israel grant the petition you have made to him. And she said, Let your servant find favor in your sight. Then the woman went to her quarters, ate and drank with her husband, and her countenance was sad no longer. They rose early in the morning and worshiped before the Lord; then they went back to their house at Ramah. Elkanah knew his wife Hannah, and the Lord remembered her. In due time Hannah conceived and bore a son. She named him Samuel, for she said, I have asked him of the Lord. Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. The Canticle (Please be seated) Song of Hannah (Samuel 2:1-10) (Spoken in unison) Hannah prayed and said, My heart exults in the Lord; my strength is exalted in my God. There is no Holy One like the Lord, no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God. Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed. The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble gird on strength. Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry are fat with spoil. The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn. The Lord kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low, he also exalts. He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor. For the pillars of the earth are the Lord's, and on them he has set the world. He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness; for not by might does one prevail. The Lord! His adversaries shall be shattered; the Most High will thunder in heaven. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king, and exalt the power of his anointed. 4

The Second Lesson Hebrews 10:11-14, Reader: A reading from the book of Hebrews. Every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, and since then has been waiting until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Reader: Hear what the Spirit is saying to God s people. Thanks be to God. Song (Please stand as able) 1 Christ Has Broken Down the Wall The Gospel Mark 13:1-8 (All standing as able, the Priest reads the Gospel, first saying) The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ. As Jesus came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings! Then Jesus asked him, Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down. When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished? 5

Then Jesus began to say to them, Beware that no one leads you astray. Many will come in my name and say, I am he! and they will lead many astray. When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. This is but the beginning of the birthpangs. Priest: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon The Reverend Scott Painter The Nicene Creed (All standing as able) We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. The Prayers of the People (Please stand or kneel as able) (The person appointed says) Let us pray for the whole state of Christ's Church and the world. (After each paragraph of this prayer, the People respond, Hear our prayer. ) Almighty and everliving God, who in your holy Word has taught us to make prayers, and supplications, and to give thanks for all people: Receive these our prayers which we offer unto your divine Majesty, beseeching you to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord; and grant that all those who do confess your holy Name may agree in the truth of your holy Word, and live in unity and godly love. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer 6

Give grace, O God, to all bishops and other ministers, especially our bishops Andy, Dena, Jeff, and Hector and our priests, Scott and John, that they may, both by their life and doctrine, set forth your true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer your holy Sacraments. And to all your people give your heavenly grace, and especially to this congregation here present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear and receive your holy Word, truly serving you in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer We beseech you also so to rule the hearts of those who bear the authority of government in this and every land, especially Donald our President, Greg our Governor, Sylvester our Mayor, and the Congress and the Courts, that they may be led to wise decisions and right actions for the welfare and peace of the world. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer Open, O Lord, the eyes of all people to behold your gracious hand in all your works, that, rejoicing in your whole creation, they may honor you with their substance, and be faithful stewards of your bounty. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer And we most humbly beseech you, of your goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succor Betty, Lisa, Colin, Jeanette, Aaliyah, Everett, Norma, Cody, Merlin, Randy, Mercy, Reggie, Ben, Shawnda, Dale, and all those who in this transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer (Additional petitions and thanksgivings may be included here.) Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer And we also bless your holy Name for all your servants departed this life in your faith and fear, beseeching you to grant them continual growth in your love and service; and to grant us grace so to follow the good examples of all your saints, that with them we may be partakers of your heavenly kingdom. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer Grant these our prayers, O God, for Jesus Christ's sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen. The Confession (Please stand or kneel as able) Celebrant and people: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of our Savior Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. (The Celebrant stands and says) Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through the grace of Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen. 7

The Peace (Please stand as able) The peace of Christ be always with you. And also with you. (The people greet one another) Announcements (Please be seated) Blessings for Birthdays & Anniversaries O God, our times are in your hand: Look with favor, we pray, on your servants N. as they begin another year. Grant that they may grow in wisdom and grace, and strengthen their trust in your goodness all the days of their life; through Jesus Christ we pray. Amen. The Offertory (Please be seated) The Holy Communion Offertory Song Cristo Te Necesita The Doxology (The People stand as able while singing) Old Hundredth Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise God, all creatures here below. Praise God above, ye heavenly Hosts. Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. 8

The Great Thanksgiving Eucharistic Prayer D (The people standing as able) (Celebrant says) (Then, the Celebrant proceeds) The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is truly right to glorify you, Holy One, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and for ever. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance. Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your Name, as we sing, Sanctus 9

(Please stand or kneel as able. The Celebrant continues) We acclaim you, holy God, glorious in power. Your mighty works reveal your wisdom and love. You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into our care, so that, in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your creatures. When our disobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to the power of death. In your mercy you came to our help, so that in seeking you we might find you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you, and through the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation Holy God, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your only Son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, Jesus lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfill your purpose Jesus gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the whole creation new. And that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for Christ who died and rose for us, you sent the Holy Spirit, your own first gift for those who believe, to complete your work in the world, and to bring to fulfillment the sanctification of all. When the hour had come for Jesus to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end; at supper with them Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper Jesus took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you. This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Almighty God, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ s death and descent among the dead, proclaiming Christ s resurrection and ascension to your right hand, awaiting Christ s coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you have given us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you. All: We praise you, we bless you, we give thanks to you, and we pray to you, Lord our God. God our Creator, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend upon us, and upon these gifts, sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of your Name. Remember, Lord, your one holy catholic and apostolic Church, redeemed by the blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard its faith, and preserve it in peace. And grant that we may find our inheritance with all the saints who have found favor with you in ages past. We praise you in union with them and give you glory through Jesus Christ our Savior. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours, Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen. 10

The Lord s Prayer As our Savior Christ has taught us, we now pray, The Breaking of the Bread (The Celebrant breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept) Fraction Anthem (Facing the People, the Celebrant says) The Gifts of God for the People of God. (The Ministers receive the Sacrament, and then immediately deliver it to the People) 11

Communion Music (Please be seated) Song Tú Fidelidad Song Great Is Thy Faithfulness 12

The Post-Communion Prayer Let us pray. (Please stand or kneel as able) All: Eternal God, you have graciously accepted us as living members of our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Savior. Amen. The Blessing (The Celebrant blesses the people.) Song Ev ry Time I Feel the Spirit The Dismissal Priest: Let us go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Spirit. Thanks be to God. 13
