3 A SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE 10.50AM: WORDS OF WELCOME AND INTRODUCTION The broadcast begins at exactly 11am. The congregation remains seated until the hymn in procession. A brief introduction to the service is made, followed by the introit: THE INTROIT We wait for thy loving kindness (1947) Michael Zuniga, baritone Sir William McKie ( ) We wait for Thy loving-kindness O God: In the mist of Thy temple. Alleluya. O God, according to Thy Name, so is Thy praise unto the world s end. Thy right hand is full of righteousness: Alleluya. O Lord send us now prosperity. Amen. OPENING SENTENCES God is our refuge and strength; a very present help in trouble. I lift up my eyes to the hills- from whence will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. We meet in the presence of God. We commit ourselves to work in penitence and faith for the reconciliation between the nations, that all people may, together, live in freedom, justice and peace. We pray for all who in bereavement, disability and pain continue to suffer the consequences of fighting and terror. We remember with thanksgiving and sorrow those whose lives, in world wars and conflicts past and present, have been given and taken away. The choir sings For the Fallen They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old, Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them. 5 A READING In days to come the mountain of the Lord s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it. Many peoples shall come and say, Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths. For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. Now, of my threescore years and ten, Twenty will not come again, And take from seventy springs a score, It only leaves me fifty more. And since to look at things in bloom Fifty springs are little room, About the woodlands I will go To see the cherry hung with snow. -II- When I was one-and-twenty I heard a wise man say, "Give crowns and pounds and guineas But not your heart away; Give pearls away and rubies But keep your fancy free." But I was one-and-twenty, No use to talk to me. When I was one-and-twenty I heard him say again, "The heart out of the bosom Was never given in vain; 'Tis paid with sighs a plenty And sold for endless rue." And I am two-and-twenty, And oh, 'tis true, 'tis true. -III- Look not in my eyes, for fear They mirror true the sight I see, And there you find your face too clear And love it and be lost like me. If young hearts were not so clever, Oh, they would be young for ever; Think no more; 'tis only thinking Lays lads underground. -V- The lads in their hundreds to Ludlow come in for the fair, There's men from the barn and the forge and the mill and the fold, The lads for the girls and the lads for the liquor are there, And there with the rest are the lads that will never be old. There's chaps from the town and the field and the till and the cart, And many to count are the stalwart, and many the brave, And many the handsome of face and the handsome of heart, And few that will carry their looks or their truth to the grave. I wish one could know them, I wish there were tokens to tell The fortunate fellows that now you can never discern; And then one could talk with them friendly and wish them farewell And watch them depart on the way that they will not return. But now you may stare as you like and there's nothing to scan; And brushing your elbow unguessed-at and not to be told They carry back bright to the coiner the mintage of man, The lads that will die in their glory and never be old. -VI- "Is my team ploughing, That I was used to drive And hear the harness jingle When I was man alive?" Ay, the horses trample, The harness jingles now; No change though you lie under The land you used to plough. "Is football playing Along the river-shore, With lads to chase the leather, Now I stand up no more?" Ay, the ball is flying, The lads play heart and soul; The goal stands up, the keeper Stands up to keep the goal. "Is my girl happy, That I thought hard to leave, And has she tired of weeping As she lies down at eve?" Ay, she lies down lightly, She lies not down to weep: Your girl is well contented. Be still, my lad, and sleep. "Is my friend hearty, Now I am thin and pine, And has he found to sleep in A better bed than mine?" Yes, lad, I lie easy, I lie as lads would choose; I cheer a dead man's sweetheart, Never ask me whose. 7

8 THE PRAYERS Let us pray for all who suffer as a result of conflict, and ask that God may give us peace. For the service men and women Who have died in the violence of war, Each one remembered by and known to God; May God give peace. God give peace. For those who love them in death as in life, Offering the distress of our grief And the sadness of our loss; May God give peace. God give peace. For all members of the armed forces Who are in danger this day, Remembering family, friends And all who pray for their safe return; May God give peace. God give peace. For civilian women, children and men Whose lives are disfigured by war or terror, Calling to mind in penitence The anger of hatreds of humanity; May God give peace. God give peace. For peacemakers and peacekeepers, Who seek to keep this world secure and free; May God give peace. God give peace. For all who bear the burden and privilege of leadership, Political, military and religious; Asking for gifts of wisdom and resolve In the search for reconciliation and peace; May God give peace. God give peace. O God of truth and justice, We hold before you those whose memory we cherish, And those whose names we will never know. Help us to lift our eyes above the torment of this broken world, And grant us the grace to pray for those who wish us harm. As we honor the past, May we put our faith in your future; For you are the source of life and hope, Now and for ever. Amen. 8

10 CONCLUDING PRAYERS Let us commit ourselves to responsible living and faithful service. Will you strive for all that makes for peace? We will. Will you seek to heal the wounds of war? We will. Will you work for a just future for all humanity? We will. The priest and choir sing: The Lord be with you, and with thy spirit. Let us pray: Collect I: Almighty God, humbly we bow our heads and kneel before thee to render thanks for thy mercy and loving kindness and for the safe return of those who fight on land, on sea, and in the air to guard our Liberty. Vouchsafe thy spirit to be companion and the strength of those broken in mind or wounded in body: Grant us so to care for them in gratitude and love that they may live midst security and merited honour. Grant understanding to the people of all nations that thy kingdom of peace be forever established on this earth. Collect II: O eternal Lord God, who holdest all souls in life: Give, we beseech thee, to thy whole Church in paradise and on earth thy light and thy peace; and grant that we, following the good examples of those who have served thee here and are now at rest, may at last enter with them into thine unending joy. Collect III: Merciful God, we offer to thee the fears in us that have not yet been cast out by love; May we accept the hope thou hast placed in the hearts of all people, And live lives of justice, courage and mercy. One minute of silence is marked, with the tolling of the Bell. All sing: My country, tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing; land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim s pride, from every mountainside let freedom ring. Our fathers God, to thee, author of liberty, to thee we sing; long may our land be bright with freedom s holy light; protect us by thy might, great God, our King. 10

11 FINAL PRAYER Most holy God and Father, Hear our prayers for all who strive for peace And all who fight for justice. Help us, who today remember the cost of war, To work for a better tomorrow; And, as we commend to you lives lost in terror and conflict, Bring us all, in the end, to the peace of your presence. Amen.
