1 Advent Daily Worship Guide All Sats Presbyterian Church 2015
2 Dear God, darkness virgs womb holy child grows. In darkness worlds pa, blessed light begs kdle. In darkness our own doubtg e ourselves, great hope begs rise aga like a lump throat: hope that thou wilt come us truly, that child will be born aga our midst, Prce Peace a world at war, hope that thou wilt ransom us our world from darkness that seeks destroy us. Lord, gift new life, new light, can be a gift truly only if we open ourselves receive it. So this is our prayer, Lord: that thou wilt open our eyes see thy glory comg aga light each day, open our ears hear angels hymn stirrg with us joy at comg child, open our hearts transformg power thy love as it comes us through love all those who hold us most dear have sacrificed most for us. Be born among us that we may ourselves be born. Be born with us that by words deeds love we may bear tidgs thy birth a world that dies for lack love. We ask it child s name. Frederick Buechner
3 INTRDUCTIN What time is it? What day is it? What calendar do you live by? At first glance those seem like simple questions. But when given due consideration, answerg m becomes like steppg a room filled with shadows. ne most perplexg Jesus discourses is found Luke 21:2528, where he uses mes light darkness says, There will be signs sun, moon, stars, on earth distress among nations confused by roarg sea waves. People will fat from fear forebodg what is comg upon world, for powers heavens will be shaken. Then y will see Son Man comg a cloud with power great glory. Now when se thgs beg take place, st up raise your heads, because your redemption is drawg near. Jesus is speakg about end world eventual comg Kgdom God as fal, climactic event human hisry end our time calendars, which raises many more questions. Does time we keep do calendars we follow guide us this day? What do our daily schedules orient our lives around our jobs, our children, our smachs, our hobbies, our entertament? What seasons shape our years tax season, fiscal year, school year, summer vacation, football season, huntg season, holiday (holy day) shoppg season? What are our most sacred days, days imbued for us with greatest amount significance 9/11, New Year s Eve, birthdays, Valente s Day, anniversaries, Thanksgivg, first day school, Church s holy days (holidays), peng Day for baseball? What sacred days personal significance are you most especially lookg through time wards graduation, marriage, employment, birth, retirement, death? What days are you preparg for, for yourself or ors? Normally, I don t thk we ask questions like se or dwell much at all upon time, seasons, days. Rar, we move through m uncritically, not realizg that what governs our time shapes our hearts determes our lives more than anythg else. Because whatever it is that sets our watches, marks our calendars, controls our seasons is our God, or gods. Jesus words, quoted above, reveal that entire world, everyone who has ever lived, is waitg knowgly or unknowg, tentionally or untentionally for day which he speaks. The world waits for him. Everyone waits. Everyone is waitg for whatever is next on ir calendar. What is next for you, for me? What is ultimate day we believe is comg for us for which we are preparg ourselves? What comg day do we live for day? The Church calendar ( sequence six seasons built around most sacred days Jesus life) is a ol that can teach us wait expectantly for Jesus his day. This is especially tent season Advent. The Christian year begs here with four Sundays before Christmas Day weeks between m. For almost four weeks every year, followers Jesus prepare celebrate his comg world, his advent, with waitg. We anticipate Christ s birth (his first advent) durg this first season, so that our entire year will be governed by a hopeful anticipation his return (his second advent), through a practical, daily preparation for it. In corporate worship daily devotions durg Advent, we read ancient Israel s longg for Messiah as foreld by prophets, especially John Baptist as last ir order. With m we pray that our eyes would be opened behold darkness world so that we can lament its sufferg repent for our willg participation shadows s. As season contues, shadows sorrows shrk as light grows, especially Mary. In her Light world lives grows. Eventually his birth brgs forth possibility rebirth new life for anyone who, like shepherds Gospels, would come him give thanks, rejoicg at angels message that un you is born this day city David a Savior, who is Christ (Messiah) Lord. We read identify with Mary durg Advent, so we might believe that ( live like!) same Light lives grows with us, as we wait throughout all our days for time deliverance at his second comg. In worship on first Sunday Advent, we pray ger, Almighty God, give us grace cast away works darkness, put on armor light, now time this mortal life which your Son Jesus Christ came visit us great humility; that last day, when he shall come aga his glorious majesty judge both livg dead, we may rise life immortal; through him who lives reigns with you Holy Spirit, one God, now for ever. This prayer is what this daily Advent Worship Guide was created help affect. Thk each week s guide as a brief daily liturgy (worship service) for personal use or with a group such as a family, roommates, or a Bible study. Each day (or as ten as possible), set aside time morng eveng pray, read, sg through guide as it directs. Frederick Buechner once said an Advent sermon: Will be, will see, will come if we take words Jesus as seriously as he asks us take m, n realest, truest, most auntic thg we can do as Christians is wait wait with passion, wait with hope agast hope for se mysterious words Jesus be fulfilled. If we forget that we are waitg, if we come believe that best we have found God here se shadows is best re is, if we come believe that most God wants us is be religious way we are religious a church, n we have lost uch with livg depths our faith. Advent is time beg aga, beg uchg, tastg, waitg for, livg reality that Lord is good that he comes make all thgs new. ER CRAS, Tim
