1 Wednesday, April 12, pm Tenebrae Officiant, Richard Webb Readers, Andrew Federle and Karen Isaacs Director of Music, Daniel Webb The Office of Tenebrae The name Tenebrae derives from the immensely expressive symbolism of the service. It is the Latin word for darkness, and refers to the gradual extinguishing of candles and darkening the church. As the recitation of psalm and lesson, responsory and canticle proceeds, the candles are put out one by one, until a single candle is the only remaining light in the church. This one light represents Christ, the Light of the world, surrounded by the darkness that enveloped our Lord as he faced his Passion. This last candle is hidden for a time behind the altar, signifying the apparent victory of the powers of evil and death. A loud noise, representing the earthquake, accompanies the return of the candle, thereby showing that although our Lord appeared to be defeated by death, yet he came back victorious from the grave. The congregation should remain seated throughout the service, and is encouraged to sing the psalms with the choir where indicated.

I stick fast in the deep mire, where no ground is: I am come into deep waters, so that the floods run over me. I am weary of crying; my throat is dry: my sight faileth me for waiting so long upon my God. They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head: they that are mine enemies, and would destroy me guiltless, are mighty. I paid them the things that I never took: God thou knowest my foolishness, and my faults are not hid from thee. Let not them that trust in thee be ashamed for my cause, O Lord God of hosts: let not those that seek thee be confounded through me, O God of Israel. And why? for thy sake I have suffered reproach: shame hath covered my face. I am become a stranger unto my brethren: even an alien unto my mother's children. For the zeal of thine house hath even eaten me: and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me. I wept, and chastened myself with fasting: and that was turned to my reproach. I put on sackcloth also: and they jested upon me. They that sit in the gate talk about me: and the drunkards make songs upon me. But, Lord, I make my prayer unto thee: in an acceptable time. Thou knowest my reproach, my shame, and my dishonour: mine adversaries are in thy sight. Reproach hath broken my heart, and I am full of heaviness: I looked for some to have pity on me, but there was no man, neither found I any to comfort me. They gave me gall to eat: and when I was thirsty they gave me vinegar to drink. But as for me, when I am poor and in heaviness: thy help O God, shall lift me up. Psalm 70 Cantor, then The candles are extinguished as we enter the darkness of Holy Week. O God, make speed to save me: O Lord, make haste to help me. 3

4 Let them for their reward be soon brought to shame: that cry over me, "There, there." As for me, I am poor and in misery: haste thee unto me, O God. 4

6 First Lesson Lamentations 1:1-2 How lonely sits the city that once was full of people! How like a widow she has become, she that was great among the nations! She that was a princess among the provinces has become a vassal. She weeps bitterly in the night, with tears on her cheeks; among all her lovers she has no one to comfort her; all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they have become her enemies. Responsory Hymn 194 Civitas sancti tui Byrd Civitas sancti tui facta est deserta. Sion deserta facta est, Jerusalem desolata est. Your holy city has become a wilderness. (Sing four times) Second Lesson Lamentations 1:3-5 Judah has gone into exile with suffering and hard servitude; she lives now among the nations, and finds no resting place; her pursuers have all overtaken her in the midst of her distress. The roads to Zion mourn, for no one comes to the festivals; all her gates are desolate, her priests groan; her young girls grieve, and her lot is bitter. 6

7 O Saviour of the world Her foes have become the masters, her enemies prosper, because the Lord has made her suffer for the multitude of her transgressions; her children have gone away, captives before the foe. O Saviour of the world, who by thy Cross and precious Blood hast redeemed us, save us, and help us, we humbly beseech thee, O Lord. Third Lesson Lamentations 1:6-9 From daughter Zion has departed all her majesty. Her princes have become like stags that find no pasture; they fled without strength before the pursuer. Jerusalem remembers, in the days of her affliction and wandering, all the precious things that were hers in days of old. When her people fell into the hand of the foe, and there was no one to help her, the foe looked on mocking over her downfall. Jerusalem sinned grievously, so she has become a mockery; all who honored her despise her, for they have seen her nakedness; she herself groans, and turns her face away. Her uncleanness was in her skirts; she took no thought of her future; her downfall was appalling, with none to comfort her. O Lord, look at my affliction, for the enemy has triumphed! Ouseley 7

I have considered the days of old and called to mind the years that are long past. I commune with my heart in the night I meditate and search my spirit. Will the Lord cast us off for ever? and will he be no more entreated? Is his mercy clean gone for ever? and is his promise come utterly to an end for evermore? We celebrate the Lord s Supper and the service concludes in darkness as the church is stripped bare. After the service you can remain in the Garden of Gethsemane in prayer. From Gethsemane to the Cross. Silence. Prayer. Music. We begin together as a community in the church and then the children will leave for their own program. In anticipation of the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus, the Vigil begins in the evening, with the lighting of the Easter fire. Our service takes place in candlelight until the bells begin to ring at the singing of the Gloria! A Resurrection Party follows. Celebration! The Easter flowers bloom, the music is joyous and we proclaim together eluia, Christ is Risen! Fabulous Easter egg hunt for children to follow the 9 and 11am services. 15
