Holy Eucharist 7:30 a.m. The Sixth Sunday of Easter Sunday, May 10, 2015 St. John s Episcopal Church Ocean Springs, Mississippi Welcome to St. John s. We are very glad you have joined us for worship today. Holy Eucharist, Rite I begins on page 323 of the Book of Common Prayer. The prayerbook service is printed here for your convenience, as are the lessons. The lessons are taken from the Holy Bible (New Revised Standard Version). Please take a moment to silence your electronic devises. At the sound of the bell all stand. All standing, the Celebrant says Celebrant Alleluia. Christ is risen. The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia. 1

The following is said, all standing Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father Almighty. O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us. For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen. Collect of the Day Celebrant Celebrant The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Let us pray. O God, who hast prepared for those who love thee such good things as pass man s understanding: Pour into our hearts such love toward thee, that we, loving thee in all things and above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. 2

First Reading Acts 10:44-48 All sit. A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles. While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter said, Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they invited him to stay for several days. Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. 3

Psalm Remain seated. Psalm 98 BCP p. 727 Cantate Domino 1 Sing to the LORD a new song, * for he has done marvelous things. 2 With his right hand and his holy arm * has he won for himself the victory. 3 The LORD has made known his victory; * his righteousness has he openly shown in the sight of the nations. 4 He remembers his mercy and faithfulness to the house of Israel, * and all the ends of the earth have seen the victory of our God. 5 Shout with joy to the LORD, all you lands; * lift up your voice, rejoice, and sing. 6 Sing to the LORD with the harp, * with the harp and the voice of song. 7 With trumpets and the sound of the horn * shout with joy before the King, the LORD. 8 Let the sea make a noise and all that is in it, * the lands and those who dwell therein. 9 Let the rivers clap their hands, * and let the hills ring out with joy before the LORD, when he comes to judge the earth. 10 In righteousness shall he judge the world * and the peoples with equity. 4

Second Reading 1 John 5:1-6 A Reading from the First letter of John. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For the love of God is this, that we obey his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome, for whatever is born of God conquers the world. And this is the victory that conquers the world, our faith. Who is it that conquers the world but the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth. Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Holy Gospel John 15:9-17 All stand. Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory be to thee, O Lord Jesus said to his disciples, As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father s commandments and abide in his love. I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete. This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. I do not call you servants any longer, because the servant does not know what the master is doing; but I have called you friends, because I have made known to you everything that I have heard from my Father. You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask him in my name. I am giving you these commands so that you may love one another. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. Praise be to thee, O Christ. 5

Sermon The Rev. Dr. Charles Hawkins Nicene Creed All stand. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. 6

Prayers of the All stand or kneel. Let us pray for the whole state of Christ s Church and the world. Almighty and everliving God, who in thy holy Word hast taught us to make prayers, and supplications, and to give thanks for all men: Receive these our prayers which we offer unto thy divine Majesty, beseeching thee to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord; and grant that all those who do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy Holy Word, and live in unity and godly love. Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all bishops and other ministers, [especially, our Bishops, Justin, Katharine, and Brian; our Clergy: Charles and Jim] that they may, both by their life and doctrine, set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments. And to all thy people, give thy heavenly grace, and especially to this congregation here present; that with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear and receive thy holy Word, truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life. We beseech thee also so to rule the hearts of those who bear the authority of government in this and every land [especially, Barack, our president; Phil, our governor, and Connie, our mayor and our city and county officials], that they may be led to wise decisions and right actions for the welfare and peace of the world. Open, O Lord, the eyes of all people to behold thy gracious hand in all thy works, that, rejoicing in thy whole creation, they may honor thee with their substance, and be faithful stewards of thy bounty. And we most humbly beseech thee, of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succor all those who, in this transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. [We remember the prayer concerns in our bulletin and the Congregation is invited to name those persons for whom our prayers are requested.] And we also bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear beseeching thee to grant them continual growth in thy love and service; and to grant us grace to follow the good examples of all thy saints, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom. 7

Grant these our prayers, O Father, for Jesus Christ's sake, our only Mediator and Advocate. Amen. Peace All stand. Celebrant The peace of the Lord be always with you. And with thy spirit. Then the Ministers and the may greet one another in the name of the Lord. Holy Communion The Celebrant says Ascribe to the Lord the honor due his Name; bring offerings and come into his courts. Psalm 96:8 Representatives of the congregation bring the people s offerings of bread and wine, and money or other gifts, to the deacon or celebrant. The people stand while the offerings are presented and placed on the Altar. Great Thanksgiving The people remain standing. Celebrant Celebrant Celebrant The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up unto the Lord. Let us give thanks unto our Lord God. It is meet and right so to do. The Celebrant proceeds It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God. 8

But chiefly are we bound to praise thee for the glorious resurrection of thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord; for he is the very Paschal Lamb, who was sacrificed for us, and hath taken away the sin of the world; who by his death hath destroyed death, and by his rising to life again hath won for us everlasting life. Therefore with Angels and Archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious Name; evermore praising thee, and saying, Sanctus Celebrant and Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of Hosts: Heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord Most High. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The people stand or kneel. The Celebrant continues All glory be to thee, O Lord our God, for that thou didst create heaven and earth, and didst make us in thine own image; and, of thy tender mercy, didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to take our nature upon him, and to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He made there a full and perfect sacrifice for the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death and sacrifice, until his coming again. For in the night in which he was betrayed, he took bread; and when he had given thanks to thee, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat, this is my Body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. Likewise, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission of sins. Do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me. 9

Wherefore, O Lord and heavenly Father, we thy people do celebrate and make, with these thy holy gifts which we now offer unto thee, the memorial thy Son hath commanded us to make; having in remembrance his blessed passion and precious death, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension; and looking for his coming again with power and great glory. And we most humbly beseech thee, O merciful Father, to hear us, and, with thy Word and Holy Spirit, to bless and sanctify these gifts of bread and wine, that they may be unto us the Body and Blood of thy dearly-beloved Son Jesus Christ. And we earnestly desire thy fatherly goodness to accept this our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, whereby we offer and present unto thee, O Lord, our selves, our souls and bodies. Grant, we beseech thee, that all who partake of this Holy Communion may worthily receive the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son Jesus Christ, and be filled with thy grace and heavenly benediction; and also that we and all thy whole Church may be made one body with him, that he may dwell in us, and we in him; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord; By whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Ghost all honor and glory be unto thee, O Father Almighty, world without end. AMEN. 10

The Celebrant then continues And now, as our Savior Christ hath taught us, we are bold to say, and Celebrant Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread A period of silence is kept. Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. O Lamb of God, you takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, you takest away the sins of the world: have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, you takest away the sins of the world: grant us thy peace. The Celebrant says The Gifts of God for the of God. All baptized persons, regardless of denominational affiliation, are welcome to receive Holy Communion in the Episcopal Church. 11

After Communion, the Celebrant says Let us pray. Celebrant and Almighty and everliving God, we most heartily thank thee for that thou dost feed us, in these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favor and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs, through hope, of thy everlasting kingdom. And we humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honor and glory, world without end. Amen. Blessing The priest blesses the people, saying The God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, the great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight; and the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you, and remain with you always. Amen. Dismissal Deacon Alleluia, alleluia. Let us go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Spirit. Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia. A Note on Today s Readings The Sixth Sunday of Easter Year B In the last weeks of Eastertide, our liturgical readings explore the results of the dying and rising of Jesus. Both the Gospel reading and the reading from 1 John speak of the self-giving love of God, revealed in Jesus Passover from death to life, as the primary characteristic of our lives in Christ. 12

In this Sunday s reading from Acts, Peter and some other Jewish Christians were astounded to see Gentiles in the household of Cornelius receive the Holy Spirit just as they had on the Day of Pentecost. Peter s last reservations about welcoming Gentiles into the Church are erased and he and the other joyfully lead them to the waters of Baptism. This Sunday was once called Rogation Sunday because medieval Christians went in processions (rogating) around the parish praying for the newly planted crops during this week. This is a good time to seek more effective ways to care for our environment and to witness that God s love is not only for humanity but also for the entire creation. Joined together by God s spirit in baptism, bound up in the dying and rising of Jesus, related by creation to all the earth, we the people of God bring all our lives and one another into the saving love of God in Eucharist.
