Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. 6 Holy Gospel John 11:32-44 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. Glory to you, Lord Christ. When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Lord, come and see. Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, See how he loved him! But some of them said, Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying? Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days. Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God? So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me. When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out! The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. The then continues Will you be responsible for seeing that the child you present is brought up in the Christian faith and life? Parents and Godparents I will, with God s help. Will you by your prayers and witness help this child to grow into the full stature of Christ? Parents and Godparents I will, with God s help. The then asks Question Answer Question Answer Question Answer Do you renounce Satan and all the spiritual forces of wickedness that rebel against God? I renounce them. Do you renounce the evil powers of this world which corrupt and destroy the creatures of God? I renounce them. Do you renounce all sinful desires that draw you from the love of God? We will. The then says Let us join with those who are committing themselves to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant. Baptismal Covenant Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. 8

9 Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will, with God s help. 9

Prayers for the Candidates The then says to the people Let us now pray for this person who is to receive the Sacrament of new birth and for this person who has renewed his commitment to Christ. 11 Thanksgiving Over the Water The then says The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over it the Holy Spirit moved in the beginning of creation. Through it you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In it your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life. We thank you, Father, for the water of Baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship those who come to him in faith, baptizing them in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. At the following words, the touches the water Now sanctify this water, we pray you, by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who here are cleansed from sin and born again may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Savior. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. Baptism Each candidate is presented by name to the, or to an assisting priest or deacon, who then immerses, or pours water upon, the candidate, saying N., I baptize you in the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. 12 When this action has been completed for all the candidates, the Bishop or Priest, at a place in full sight of the congregation, prays over them, saying Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon these your servants the forgiveness of sin, and have raised them to the new life of grace. Sustain them, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give them inquiring and discerning hearts, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works. Amen. Then the Priest places a hand on the person s head, marking on the forehead the sign of the cross [using Chrism if desired] and saying to each one N., you are sealed by the Holy Spirit in Baptism and marked as Christ s own for ever. Amen. The then says Let us welcome the newly baptized. and We receive you into the household of God. 14 Representatives of the congregation bring the people s offerings of bread and wine, and money or other gifts, to the deacon or celebrant. The people stand while the offerings are presented and placed on the Altar. Great Thanksgiving The people remain standing. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. The proceeds It is truly right to glorify you, Father, and to give you thanks; for you alone are God, living and true, dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and for ever. Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance. Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your Name, as we sing, 14

You formed us in your own image, giving the whole world into our care, so that, in obedience to you, our Creator, we might rule and serve all your creatures. When our disobedience took us far from you, you did not abandon us to the power of death. In your mercy you came to our help, so that in seeking you we might find you. Again and again you called us into covenant with you, and through the prophets you taught us to hope for salvation. Father, you loved the world so much that in the fullness of time you sent your only Son to be our Savior. Incarnate by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, he lived as one of us, yet without sin. To the poor he proclaimed the good news of salvation; to prisoners, freedom; to the sorrowful, joy. To fulfill your purpose he gave himself up to death; and, rising from the grave, destroyed death, and made the whole creation new. And, that we might live no longer for ourselves, but for him who died and rose for us, he sent the Holy Spirit, his own first gift for those who believe, to complete his work in the world, and to bring to fulfillment the sanctification of all. When the hour had come for him to be glorified by you, his heavenly Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end; at supper with them he took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you. This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Father, we now celebrate this memorial of our redemption. Recalling Christ s death and his descent among the dead, proclaiming his resurrection and ascension to your right hand, awaiting his coming in glory; and offering to you, from the gifts you have given us, this bread and this cup, we praise you and we bless you. 15

The continues Lord, we pray that in your goodness and mercy your Holy Spirit may descend upon us, and upon these gifts, sanctifying them and showing them to be holy gifts for your holy people, the bread of life and the cup of salvation, the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit, a living sacrifice in Christ, to the praise of your Name. Remember, Lord, your one holy catholic and apostolic Church, redeemed by the blood of your Christ. Reveal its unity, guard its faith, and preserve it in peace. Remember Michael, the Presiding Bishop; Brian, our bishop; and all who minister in your Church. Remember all your people, and those who seek your truth. Remember. Remember all who have died in the peace of Christ, and those whose faith is known to you alone; bring them into the place of eternal joy and light. And grant that we may find our inheritance with the Blessed Virgin Mary, with patriarchs, prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and all the saints who have found favor with you in ages past. We praise you in union with them and give you glory through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, all honor and glory are yours, Almighty God and Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. AMEN. 16

Nursery Care is available for young children during the 9:00 a.m. worship service, Adult Bible Study (or, Adult Forum), and the 11:15 a.m. service. 24 Parish Announcements for the Week of November 1, 2015 Daughters of the King. The regular meeting of Daughters of the King will be Tuesday November 3, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall at St John's Episcopal Church. Martha Thompson will be collecting items for the shoe boxes for Christmas. Items are needed for boys and girls ages 4-12 (crayons, stickers, small games, pencils, puzzles...items that fit in a shoe box). Call Ginny Dugaw ( ) if you need transportation. The Art of Giving. Pledge cards to make a pledge to St. John s for 2016 are available in the parish office and at the entrances to the chancel. All pledge cards will be blessed at the altar on November 8 th at our ingathering of pledges. Prayerfully consider making a pledge to the mission and ministry of St. John s for Thank you to everyone who helped with the grounds keeping workday Saturday: especially Marty Capalbo, Beau & Kay Cox, Melissa Johnson, Gail Bishop, and Marjorie Williams. Thank you to Frasier Nursery for donating the mulch. We are also grateful to Carolyn Sanders and Max Hewish for donating the river stones for the quadrangle; they look great and will keep mud splashes off the building. A hearty thank you John Poss and Marty Capalbo who regularly work the gardens and grounds. Our landscaping never looked better! EYC (Episcopal Youth Community) EYC is at Camp Bratton-Green this weekend for Halloween Weekend. EYC-East Gulf Coast is a ministry of Church of the Redeemer, Biloxi; St. Mark's, Gulfport; and St. John's, Ocean Springs. All Middle School and High School age youth are invited. Participants can sign up on line through the diocesan website. The registration fee is $30 (cheap!!), and scholarships are available. Put a little smile on your heart! Daughters of the King will be gathering shoebox items for kids ages 4-12 (such as crayons, toys, tissues, toothbrush and paste, travel size toiletries). If St. John s congregation can help us collect these items, DOK will put the boxes together and deliver in December. Please place them in the marked box DOK Shoebox project in the parish hall. 25 Praying it Forward Campaign A Capital Campaign for St. John s $725,000 - goal $737,506 pledged (146 pledges) $ 278, paid on pledges (through September 30, 2015) $458, to go Art of Giving Annual Giving Campaign Goals for the Every Member Canvass of 2016 $355,000 - Pledged Pledges * Pledge cards will be placed in the offering baskets and blessed at the altar on November 8. Financial Update Year-to-Date Report: End of September Actuals vs. Budget Tithes, Offerings, etc.: $281, $264, Expenses: $290, $308, *At the end of September, the parish was ahead of budget on tithes and offerings. And, the parish was under budget on expenses. Some of you have asked why our budgeted expenses are higher than our budgeted income. Expenses are higher than income because we are currently running a budget deficit. The difference comes from our cash reserves (our savings). You will note that we have not yet had to dip into our savings for In that regard we have done better than our projections. Offerings have been stronger than expected to date and expenses have been less than expected to date. Some of the expenses, however, are merely timing issues and we continue to expect them before the end of the year. 25
