Tidings St. Timothy s Episcopal Church PO Box 7416 Salem, OR mail@sainttimothys.org MARCH 2017 From the Rector Ash Wednesday comes this year on March first, just as spring really begins in the Willamette Valley. This is as it should be, for the word Lent comes from an old word (lencten) for the lengthening of daylight. As spring is the prelude to summer s warmth and beauty, Lent is the essential step before we experience again the Paschal Mystery of Holy Week and Easter in more than an outward manner. Each spring I have to give my garage a good cleaning. Things that shouldn t be there have somehow found their way into it. Items I will need as the year progresses have been hidden by other things. Cobwebs need knocking down and an inventory taken. Broken tools need to be mended while others should be sharpened and oiled. The first step in this process is taking everything out and examining it carefully. What should be kept? What should be given to others or discarded? Exactly what do I possess (no need to buy more of what I already have)? What do I lack? Lent is a season of spiritual cleansing, setting our household in order. By prayer, fasting, and works of mercy; through time set aside for listening, study, and discernment, we recall who we already are in Christ. Lent also helps us see more clearly the outlines of the potential person we can be through a loving obedience to Christ s teaching. We say no to those things that call our gaze from the Lord Jesus so we can say yes to the Gospel more deeply. We repent so that we may be free to live truly abundant lives. St. Timothy s offers several ways for parishioners to enter more deeply into the season of Lent as we communally prepare for Holy Week and Easter in April: (Continued)

(Continued) 1. Commit to a Lenten Rule. Forms available in the narthex and the Sunday bulletin 2. Fast through the season, with special focus on Fridays. Fasting normally means reducing the amount of food eaten; you may fast from certain items. Sundays are not fast days. 3. Attend the Friday evening Stations of the Cross/Benediction services. The Stations service will be a bit different this year as we will include short meditations by Blessed. Julian of Norwich. Her deep yet original understanding of Christ s Passion will give us new points to consider as we make the round of the nave. If you have never done this, think about it. Foregoing cocooning on Friday night is as important a form of ascetical practice as fasting. 4. Participate in our parish Adult Education series on the Sermon on the Mount. Reading and studying Holy Scripture is an essential part of a Lenten observance 5. Make a confession either when they are offered or by private appointment. This is one of the greatest gifts the Church offers to her members. 6. Contribute to our parish s Lenten Outreach Project. This is our special way to participate in almsgiving/work of mercy for the season. 7. Pray the Daily Office. Lent is an excellent time to develop an Anglican practice of daily prayer. Begin with one Office and grow from there. You may use your BCP or try one of the web-based Daily Office sites, such as: Forward Movement: St. Bede s Breviary: Mission St. Clare: By participating in these offerings (as well as other, ongoing ministries and offerings of the parish), we will receive grace to bear fruit worthy of repentance, to overcome the voices of negativism or complacency that surround us, to fall in love again with Our Lord and his Gospel Way, and to become less burdened by anger, unforgiveness, sloth, or the other sins that beset us. Then we will be that much freer to participate fully in the liturgies of Holy Week and come to the banquet at Easter. Our practice of the Christian faith as Anglicans is deeply connected to living out each season of the Church Year. I commend to you, as the Prayer Book puts it, the observance of a holy Lent. By doing so, we will receive Christ anew at Easter and each day. In Christ, (Continued)

The Kalendar in March Sunday Eucharist Readings: Year A Daily Office Readings: Year 1 Lenten Observance on all days except Sundays & The Annunciation Note: The Holy Eucharist is offered each Tuesday at 10 AM in the chapel, followed by tea and conversation in the parish library. The Liturgy used (Rite I) is a rich source of spiritual growth. All are invited! Wednesday, March 1: Ash Wednesday (Complete Fast Day for those able) Liturgies Noon & 7 PM Joel 2:1-2,12-17; Psalm 103:8-14; 2 Corinthians 5:20b-6:10; Matthew 6:1-6,16-21 Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent and is (for those able to do so) a complete fast day; if you are unable to make a complete fast, you are asked to reduce food intake to whatever minimum you are able. This service is the very definition, in our tradition, of solemnity. After we receive the ashes on our foreheads a literal application of the truth that we are mortal and made of dust we pray the probing Litany of Penitence, wherein we speak with deep honesty about our transgressions both individual and corporate and God s mercy. We then break the fast by receiving the great meal of this day: the Sacred Mysteries of Christ s Body and Blood. Our Bishop will be with us for the evening service. Friday, March 3: Stations of the Cross & Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament This will be the first of our Friday evening Stations services. We will make our way around the nave as we participate in the story of Christ s Passion. Short meditations from the writings of Bl. Julian of Norwich (14th Century English Mystic and Anchoress) will be given at each station. The short service of Benediction follows, with another brief reading from Julian s work. Each parishioner should attend at least one of these services; making them a central part of your Lenten Rule is very much encouraged. Sunday, March 5: The First Sunday in Lent Genesis 2:15-17; 3:1-7; Psalm 32; Romans 5:12-19; Matthew 4:1-11 This solemn day begins with the Great Litany (sung in procession at 10 AM), the earliest part of the Liturgy to be put into English at the time of the Reformation. This is the masterpiece of Anglican liturgical intercession. The tonality of the Lenten services includes (Continued)

(Continued) a Gregorian-style setting of the Service Music, a change in the vestments from green to purple (repentance being the Royal Way to God), the Byzantine-inspired Eucharistic Prayer D, and myriad other ways of emphasizing the penitential-yet-joyful character of the season. Sunday, March 12: The Second Sunday in Lent Genesis 12:1-4a; Psalm 121; Romans 4:1-5, 13-17; John 3:1-17 This Sunday we will begin the Eucharist with the recitation of the Decalogue, followed by the confession, absolution, and the asperges. In this series of actions we hear God s most basic law for his people, respond by acknowledging our transgressions, receive the assurance of his pardon, and receive holy water in recollection of our baptism by which we are born anew and become members of Christ s Body the Church. Sunday, March 19: The Third Sunday in Lent Exodus 17:1-7; Psalm 95; Romans 5:1-11; John 4:5-42 The Lenten Sundays are in Lent, not of it. They are not fast days, nor are they used in the reckoning of the 40 days of the season. This Sunday includes the reading of the Call of Abraham from Genesis and St. John s account of the Woman at the Well. Saturday, March 25: The Annunciation (Holy Eucharist in the Chapel, 11 AM) Isaiah 7:10-14; Canticle 3; Hebrews 10:4-10; Luke 1:26-38 The commemoration of the Archangel Gabriel s visit to the Blessed Virgin Mary is a feast day (our Lenten observance is suspended for this day). Sunday, March 26: The Forth Sunday in Lent (Mid-Lent or Laetare Sunday) 1 Samuel 16:1-13; Psalm 23; Ephesians 5:8-14; John 9:1-41 The secret anointing of David by Samuel and the story of the Man born Blind in the Gospel according to John will be read this day. Roses are placed on the altar this Sunday as a sign of God s abiding mercy and the coming joy of Easter in the midst of our Lenten discipline. And looking further ahead Holy Week & Easter Sunday: April 9-16 (Plan to clear your calendar and worship together as a community during much of this week especially the services of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter) Bishop s Visitation and Confirmation: Sunday, May 7

Just come in and have friendly conversation with parents who have the desire to learn a new language. Our space is open Tuesday through Thursday from 9 AM to 2 PM. Please contact Mary Herrle at if you are interested in serving the Hoover community this way. Mary Herrle, ESL Coordinator Lent Outreach Project Every Lent we have a corporate almsgiving opportunity, to benefit a community charity or a world-wide organization. This year, through the Salem for Refugees website and our connection with Anya and Doug Holcomb, we are collecting Welcome Kits to help newly-arrived refugees to get settled in the Salem area.the item descriptions are not as exacting as some we have seen in the past, so some discernment is called for! The deadline for bringing donations is April 23. Each kit will be comprised of one of each of these (new) items: 56-gallon plastic tub electric tea kettle tea Oregon calendar map of Salem scented jar candle butane lighter blanket small sewing kit notebook pens/pencils chocolate Welcome doormat (rollable) umbrella scissors Plant Sale Spring is, for gardeners, already here. 8 Day by Day we Magnify Thee A series of resources for living out the Classical Anglican practice of faith A Litany of Social Justice This litany, adapted from a source dating to the 1940s, serves as a useful tool in our prayer life, reminding us of our baptismal duty to confront evil within and without ourselves, and to strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being. O God the Father of mankind, Have mercy on us. O God the Son, redeemer of the nations, Have mercy upon us. O God the Holy Spirit, sanctifier of the faithful, Have mercy upon us. For the injustices we have committed by our thoughts, words, and actions, For our share in responsibility for suffering, death, and warfare, For the persecution of our brothers and sisters, For dehumanizing and manipulating others, For all who have suffered and perished because of our economic wealth, and for those whom we have exploited, For all who have suffered from our unjust treaties, laws, and prisons, For the separation of Christians from society because of our sloth, arrogance, and narrow-mindedness, Show us, O Lord, the light of your Justice: That we may never allow injustice because of indifference or cowardice, (Continued)

(Litany, Continued) That we may never seek to exploit others through fear, threat of violence, starvation, or slander, That we may seek peace and justice rather than power and affluence, That we may recognize political corruption and purify it, That we may rightly use our economic power, That the life of the Trinity may be present in our family, economic, and political life, That we may know all people as made in the image of God and live accordingly, Let us pray, Almighty God, you have created humankind in your image; Grant us grace fearlessly to contend against evil, and to make no peace with oppression; and, that we may reverently use our freedom, help us to employ it in the maintenance of justice among peoples and nations, to the glory of your holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. A Word from the Ancient Church: About the Lenten Observance There are three things, my brethren, by which faith stands firm, devotion remains constant, and virtue endures. They are prayer, fasting and mercy. Prayer knocks at the door, fasting obtains, mercy receives. Prayer, mercy and fasting: these three are one, and they give life to each other. Fasting is the soul of prayer, mercy is the lifeblood of fasting. Let no one try to separate them; they cannot be separated. If you have only one of them or not all together, you have (Continued)

(Continued) nothing. So if you pray, fast; if you fast, show mercy; if you want your petition to be heard, hear the petition of others. If you do not close your ear to others you open God s ear to yourself. When you fast, see the fasting of others. If you want God to know that you are hungry, know that another is hungry. If you hope for mercy, show mercy. If you look for kindness, show kindness. If you want to receive, give. If you ask for yourself what you deny to others, your asking is a mockery. Let this be the pattern for all men when they practice mercy: show mercy to others in the same way, with the same generosity, with the same promptness, as you want others to show mercy to you. Therefore, let prayer, mercy and fasting be one single plea to God on our behalf, one speech in our defense, a threefold united prayer in our favor. Let us use fasting to make up for what we have lost by despising others. Let us offer our souls in sacrifice by means of fasting. There is nothing more pleasing that we can offer to God, as the psalmist said in prophecy: A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit; God does not despise a bruised and humbled heart. Offer your soul to God, make him an oblation of your fasting, so that your soul may be a pure offering, a holy sacrifice, a living victim, remaining your own and at the same time made over to God. Whoever fails to give this to God will not be excused, for if you are to give him yourself you are never without the means of giving. To make these acceptable, mercy must be added. Fasting bears no fruit unless it is watered by mercy. Fasting dries up when mercy dries up. Mercy is to fasting as rain is to earth. However much you may cultivate your heart, clear the soil of your nature, root out vices, sow virtues, if you do not release the springs of mercy, your fasting will bear no fruit. When you fast, if your mercy is thin your harvest will be thin; when you fast, what you pour out in mercy overflows into your barn. Therefore, do not lose by saving, but gather in by scattering. Give to the poor, and you give to yourself. You will not be allowed to keep what you have refused to give to others. Amen. From a homily by St. Peter Chrysologus (the golden-worded ), A.D. bishop of Ravenna

Notes from your Vestry The January 17th meeting was held in the Vestry Room. We started the meeting with news that Peggy Goforth and Marilyn Von Foerster had agreed to serve on the Vestry. The vestry approved these nominations and their names will be put forth at the annual meeting for voting. Much of the meeting concerned the Annual meeting next week and the Vestry retreat to be held in February. David Tatman shared the draft financial report for the 2016 year. He reported that the pledges from parishioners was about 97% (outstanding!). Thanks to all for their commitment to our parish. Susan Hawkins, the senior warden, reported that at the Vestry retreat, we need to discuss plans and timelines for the year of the various Vestry responsibilities. Chuck McFerron, the Junior Warden, told us that there was a good turnout for the greening of the church, but turnout for the de-greening was a bit low. After the annual meeting, the Vestry voted to approve Merryn Grae to serve as clerk for the Vestry. Merryn has served this position extremely well the last several years and we feel very fortunate that she has agreed to continue with her well documented notations on the Vestry meetings. Please accept our thanks and appreciation Merryn. On a personal level, I want to express my admiration for the way our Vestry works. It is always very informative, lively, and filled with people who love Christ and the important work we can do to further our parish goals and mission statement. I feel very grateful that we all work so well together in our parts to love and serve Christ. Blessings and Peace, Pat Eder
