2 From Fr. Kenute s Desk The following is an extract from In The Breaking Of The Bread by J. Lee Magness. ALL OF US Is not the cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks a participation in the blood of Christ? And is not the bread that we break a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one loaf, we, who are many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf. (1 Corinthians 10: 16-17) This is not just a pageant, this breaking of the bread, this out-pouring of the cup. It is a feast for us to participate in all of us. This is not a concert or a lecture or a demonstration, not something done to us or for us. It is something done by us all of us. If it is in any sense a drama, it is a drama in which we are not the on-lookers, not the applauders. We are not the audience but the actors all of us. And our play has its props, but they number only three. There is the loaf his body broken for us all of us. And there is the cup the cup of the new covenant in his blood poured out for us all of us. But there is also the table, not an altar for priest and presbyters, not a stage for the star alone, but a table, reminding us that we are guests, that we have our part to play in the play all of us. And who is this all-of-us who have come to this table? We are migrant workers and business executives and shopkeepers. We are unemployed. We are children, elderly, single, married. We went through grade school, we have a Ph.D. We are rich, and not rich. And we have all-of-us come to this table because someone invited us and died for us and rose for us and lives for us. But aren t we sinners? Yes, all of us. The same all-of-us sinners He saved. The one who gave us himself has given us parts of his great drama of redemption. We are not the audience, we are the actors all of us. God, thank you for inviting us to share the loaf and the cup, and thank you for inviting us to sit around the table, together, all of us, through Jesus, Amen. 5 Priest: and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine. We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit. Prayers of the People: Leader: Let us pray. God of abundance, you open your hand and feed us in due season, satisfying the desires of every living thing. Lord, Leader: We pray for the family of nations, the families in our communities, and our own families, that they may have all they need to live in peace and harmony. We pray for those whom you have called to be peacemakers: leaders of governments, businesses and non-governmental organizations; leaders of the church, educators and community organizers; and everyone of sound mind and body who can bear the burdens of the weak. Lord, Leader: We pray for all churches and denominations, that we may find ways of cooperating to care for the earth, and care for those in need, while giving you the glory in all that we do. Give us the strength and courage and faith to trust Jesus Christ and to be Christ-like for the good of the creation you are redeeming. Lord, Leader: God, you are near to all who call out to you. Have mercy on all who are hungry, thirsty or ill, especially those who are refugees or poor or underpaid. Use us, as you used the boy with two fish and five barley loaves, to answer the cries of the hungry. Lord, Leader: We pray for the victims of war and violence, for the orphans, mothers, and men who must live on the streets, for those who have no peace, for the children, women and men whose homes have been destroyed by war and whose minds have been damaged by what they have seen, felt or done; and for all those who are seen as the fragments of society. May they be gathered up so that no one is lost. Lord, Leader: We pray for the sick and those facing the end of their days. May Christ dwell in their hearts through faith, and may they know that they are rooted and grounded in love. Lord,

6 Leader: When we would make you a king, forgive us. When we are caught up in the storms of life, come to us, calm our fears, and help us to reach our destinations. Now through the power of the Holy Spirit, and in the love of Christ, to you be the glory in the church for all generations.
