We recently completed an exciting year at the Shrine. Nearly 64,000 pilgrims visited us in 2012, more than any other year in the Shrine s history. Along with rising pilgrim numbers came a corresponding rise in participation in Holy Mass and the Sacrament of Penance, the two focal points of a pilgrimage. The wonderful year culminated on December 12, 2012, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, when Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke presided at Holy Mass in the midst of a packed Shrine Church. Preceding Holy Mass, His Eminence spoke to those gathered in the Shrine Church Plaza and unveiled a bronze statue of Blessed John Duns Scotus. In this issue of Tepeyac, you will find out more about Blessed John Duns Scotus along with some of the Cardinal s inspiring words. Pope Benedict XVI has encouraged the faithful to organize pilgrimages to major Marian shrines during this Year of Faith. Sister M. Ancilla Matter and Mr. Leif Arvidson We have joined together with two other Marian Shrines in Wisconsin, the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help and the Shrine of Mary, Help of Christians, to promote pilgrimages to Marian shrines this year. Through our collaboration with other shrines, we endeavor to build a thriving Catholic culture, where the faithful find strength and renewal through pilgrimages to holy sites. Each season at the Shrine brings a beauty and significance all its own. During the winter months, the peaceful serenity of the Shrine grounds adds to the prayerful atmosphere. I invite you to consider making a pilgrimage here as part of your Lenten commitments. May God bless you abundantly! In the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Mr. Leif E. From , Tom studied at Franciscan University- Steubenville, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Theology with a Communications minor. His passion for the Catholic 2 WINTER 2013 Faith fueled a desire to learn more about it and to grow deeper in it. After graduating from Franciscan University, Tom worked for the Archdiocese of New York as Director of Operations for the Cardinal s Annual Appeal until December Although he had an excellent position with the Archdiocese, he felt called by Our Lord and Our Lady to apply for and to accept the position of Director of Development for the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Tom and his wife have a desire to raise their family in a faithful Catholic environment. Life in New York was about getting ahead. However, life in this area of the country, and at the Shrine, focuses more on our Faith and the family. Providentially, Tom, Annemarie, and one of their children were able to come to participate in the December 9th Mass and witness the Saint Juan Diego Guild for Children inductions. On December 11th, Tom met Cardinal Burke and the Board of Directors. The Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe welcomed Tom on January 9th. As Director of Development, his goals will be to honor Our Lord through Our Lady by working to further the mission of the Shrine through the growth of the development department and to increase awareness of the existence of the Shrine. In his spare time, Tom enjoys being with family, photography, home improvements, gardening, and landscaping. Compiled by Sister M. Ancilla Matter, F.S.G.M., M.A.

3 Miguel B L E S S E Pro D F or all of his daring exploits -- dodging hostile government agents by leaping from moving taxi cabs, or by disguising himself as a grocer or a mechanic -- the young Jesuit Miguel Pro was not a well man. The communistic Calles administration of early twentiethcentury Mexico had made the practice of the Catholic Faith illegal, and Father Pro had to battle both its repressive measures and his own poor health. His trip to Lourdes left him reflecting, I was at the feet of my Mother and... I felt very deeply within myself Her blessed presence and action, but he was not fully, physically healed as so many others have been. The only physical healing he would receive had come many years earlier, when his father had lifted toddler Miguel up to Our Lady of Guadalupe with the wrenching plea, Mother, give me back my son! Immediately the unconscious child, on whom the doctors had given up, shuddered, opened his eyes, brought up whatever had been poisoning him, and embarked upon what everyone hoped Viva Cristo Rey would be a full recovery. But it was not to be. Ordained in his thirties on August 31, 1925 in Belgium, Father Pro was still having serious stomach trouble which interfered with his studies and his ability to minister as a priest. In fact, when his superiors sent him home to Mexico, they did so with the thought that they might as well let the gifted young man live out his last difficult days near his family and among his own people. That was not the attitude Miguel himself took. For his part, writes his biographer of happy memory, Ann Ball, Father Pro believed that it was his mission to spend the rest of his life bringing Christ to his countrymen, without counting the cost or worrying about the danger. And the danger was considerable. The Calles laws not only sparked the Cristeros movement depicted in the popular movie For Greater Glory; they formed the horrific backdrop against which Father Pro fed, both spiritually and physically, his flock in hiding. Falsely accused of conspiring in an assassination plot, Father Pro was executed by firing squad on November 23, His last words inscribed on the halo in his portrait in the Shrine Church were Viva Cristo Rey Long Live Christ the King! On September 23, 2012, Father Jacinto M. Chapin, F.I., current Rector of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, installed a first-class relic of the beatified martyr in the side-aisle altar where this portrait hangs. The cultural context of this installation is sobering: in our own country, laws forbidding the public practice of certain aspects of the Catholic Faith have now gone into effect as well. May we hold Blessed Miguel Pro s heroic example in our hearts, invoking his certain intercession unceasingly during the darkening days to come, and praying with him in the words he composed shortly before his death: Heart of Jesus, I am all Thine, but take care of my promise so that I may be able to put it into practice even unto the complete sacrifice of my life. 4 S T A T U E U N V E I L I N G o f B L E S S E D John Duns Scotus John D On the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe 2012, a bronze statue of Blessed John Duns Scotus was unveiled by Father Peter Damien Fehlner, F.I., former Rector of the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and blessed by Cardinal Raymond Burke. Cardinal Burke opened his remarks, saying: Blessed John Duns Scotus, heroic Friar of the [Franciscan Order], is most appropriately the patron saint of the Friary of the Franciscans of the Immaculate who serve at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. His veneration is also most fittingly given prominence at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mary Immaculate, Mother of God, for he is, as the inscription at the base of the statue indicates, not only the Doctor Subtilis, that is, a Friar of extraordinary intellectual gifts which he placed totally at the service of Our Lord and His Mystical Body. But he is also the Defender of the Immaculate, the first of the great theologians to defend efficaciously what the Church has always believed about the conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, namely, that she was conceived without any stain of original sin, that she, from the first moment of her life, was granted the privilege of enjoying in advance the Redemption which God the Son, to be conceived under her Immaculate Heart, would win for all mankind. o o A powerful tower rising to Heaven as a test C O N N E C T I O N T O O U R L A D Y O F G U A D A L U P E Explaining the connection between Blessed Scotus and Our Lady of Guadalupe, Father Peter Fehlner recalls for us that Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to Saint Juan Diego on December 9, 1531, which was at that time the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Therefore, promoting devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe was and still is a way to come to know and to love her Son, present in her Immaculate Womb. The Franciscans who did so much to promote devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe in the 16th century were all trained in the philosophy and theology of Duns Scotus. This training was important then for the recognition of who Our Lady of Guadalupe was and why she came to mediate as Mother. So, too, it is important today, especially in North America, to recognize the importance of this Shrine and to make it a goal of pilgrimage. W H A T D O W E K N O W A B O U T B L E S S E D J O H N D U N S S C O T U S? Blessed Scotus was born in Scotland sometime between late 1265 and early As a boy, Blessed Scotus wanted to study and immerse himself in the truths of the Faith, but his mind was such that he understood little or nothing. So, he turned to Our Lady in prayer, begging her to open his mind. Her Motherly heart was so moved by his tears that she obtained for him the healing of his mind. Endowed with sublime intelligence, Blessed Scotus later took the Franciscan habit in As a young friar, he began the study of philosophy and then theology at the Franciscan College at Oxford University and soon assumed the responsibility of professor. Scotus was ordained a priest on March 17, From that moment, the offering of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, the act par excellence in the whole Church, became the center of his life. The body of Scotus theological writings present the rich treasures of the Holy Eucharist, the Real Presence, and our Immaculate Mother. It was during his time as professor at Oxford that he taught the truth of Our Lady s Immaculate Conception. Later in 1291, Scotus was sent to continue his studies at the prestigious University of Paris, the Sorbonne. There, he continued to teach the truth of the Immaculate Conception. However, the position held at Sorbonne was that the Virgin Mary was not granted the privilege of the Immaculate Conception. Since Scotus taught a theological opinion different than that supported by the University, he was invited to a public disputation of the matter in the presence of two representatives of the Pope, the Bishop of Paris and his clergy, and the entire academic community. 4 WINTER 2013

5 uns Scotus imony of faith Pope John Paul II, 1993, on the { Beatification of John Duns Scotus } Blessed John Duns Scotus accepted the challenge. On his way from the friary to the University, he stopped before a statue of Our Lady, raised his eyes to her and prayed that he be given strength against the enemy. As she had answered his plea when a young boy, Our Lady responded to Scotus with a bow of her head as if to say, Yes, I give you all my strength. Drawing from the mysterious depths of Sacred Scripture, Blessed John Duns Scotus clearly responded to each argument. Proving the privilege of Our Lady s Immaculate Conception, and thus her role as Mediatrix of all grace, the academic body at the Sorbonne changed its position. Toward the end of the year 1307, Blessed Scotus was transferred to the University of Cologne. There, too, he showed himself to be a humble and brilliant defender of Mary Immaculate. T H E W R I T I N G S O F B L E S S E D J O H N D U N S S C O T U S A gifted Franciscan theologian, Blessed John Duns Scotus is known as the Subtle and Marian Doctor. Throughout his writings, Blessed Scotus teaches us the primacy of love in theology. Everything is ordered to love, and in love everything is perfected. The most perfect revelation of this divine love is the absolute primacy of Jesus and Mary. Burning with love for the truth, Scotus also debated the heresies of the dangerous sects that were disrupting the faith of so many souls at the time. His life was marked with travels from Scotland to France to England and back to France again, and finally to Germany where he died on November 8, 1308, at the age of 42. His tomb in Cologne reads: Scotland bore me; England received me; France taught me; Cologne holds me. It was in 1854 that Pope Pius IX declared the Immaculate Conception a Dogma of the Catholic Faith. M O D E L F O R P I L G R I M J O U R N E Y S His travels were marked by intense prayer and contemplation. Blessed Scotus taught the Faith to the students and people he met along the way. For each of us, he inspires our pilgrimages to be similar experiences of faith, spent in intense prayer, reflecting on God s love and the Scriptures, and encountering the Incarnate Lord in place and time. How you journey determines how you arrive. Blessed John Duns Scotus R O A D T O S A I N T H O O D Pope John Paul II beatified John Duns Scotus on March 20, On December 12, 2012, at the conclusion of his talk, Cardinal Burke encouraged everyone to learn more about Blessed John Duns Scotus and to entrust a special intention to his intercession. P R A Y E R F O R Canonization O Most High, Almighty and gracious Lord, Who exalts the humble and confounds the proud of heart, grant us the great joy of seeing Blessed John Duns Scotus canonized. He honored Your Son with the most sublime praises; he was the first to defend successfully the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary; he lived in heroic obedience to the Holy Father, to the Church, and to the Seraphic Order. O Most Holy Father, God of infinite love, hear, we beseech You, our humble prayer, through the merits of Your only-begotten Son and of His Mother, Coredemptrix and Spouse of the Holy Spirit. T he Celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the summit of all devotional activity at the Shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Our Lady and the Shrine were very special to Roger. In considering a gift that would represent Roger and his love for the Shrine, the Hovel family decided altar cloths would enhance both the beauty of the Shrine Church and the inspiration and hope that it offers through the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. One of the Second Vatican Council documents put before us for study and reflection during the Year of Faith is the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (Sacrosanctum Concilium). With regard to the Lord s Sacrifice, made present on the altar, the Church teaches the essentially sacrificial nature of the Mass:... the Church has never failed to come together to celebrate the Paschal Mystery: reading the scriptures concerning Him (Luke 24:27), celebrating the Eucharist in which the victory and triumph of His death are again made present, and at the same time giving thanks 6 WINTER 2013 to God for His unspeakable gift (2 Corinthians 9:15) in Christ Jesus.... Christ is always present in His Church, especially in her liturgical celebrations. He is present in the Sacrifice of the Mass, not only in the person of His minister, but especially under the Eucharistic species. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, at which the faithful gather together to celebrate the Eucharist, is the most significant event at the Shrine. Much like adorning a table at home with a special cloth when someone important is coming to dinner, so too the importance of sharing Christ in the Eucharistic meal calls for fine linens to cover the altar. Since the offering of bread and wine becomes the Body and Blood of Jesus, a beautifully dressed altar expresses the importance of the Paschal Sacrifice re-presented thereon during the Mass: Out of reverence for the celebration of the memorial of the Lord and for the banquet in which the Body and Blood of the Lord are offered PHOTO BY THOMAS THIMONS New altar cloth, donated in memory of Roger Reichert, contains the Shrine logo in the center of each of the two extremes of the altar cloth. on an altar where this memorial is celebrated, there should be at least one white cloth, its shape, size, and decoration in keeping with the altar s design... (General Instruction of the Roman Missal, #304). Roger paid particular attention to the beauty of the altar and cloths used at each church where he and his wife, Dr. Mary Hovel, participated in the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice. Hand-made near the heart of the Church in Rome, the gift of altar cloths unites Roger s love of both the Eucharist and the See of Peter in Rome, and his appreciation of fine Italian craftsmanship. Appropriately, Roger, who loved helping others and making them smile and feel good, was the recipient of such a gift when Benedict XVI greeted him in Rome with a handshake and words of encouragement! This is truly a sacred gift given in memory of Roger Reichert, a faithful son of Mary, Mother of the Lord and our Mother. Compiled by: Sister M.
