Ibeh and Abba 8 Spiritan Archives Provincial Chapter Ignites and Inspires After nearly a year of preparation, prayer and reflection, the 2018 Provincial Chapter was held from June at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was a fulfilling and inspiring week of worship, renewal, fellowship and planning. During this impactful week, U.S. Province members, Lay Spiritans, provincials from other circumscriptions, and invited Spiritans working or studying in the U.S., came together in prayerful reflection on the work and direction of the Congregation. Attendees received reports and updates from the provincial and various ministries and missions, and worked in discussion groups during this important opportunity for discerning God s will for the province. Bishop David Zubik of the Diocese of Pittsburgh, Superior General Fr. John Fogarty, C.S.Sp., and Fr. Jeffrey Duaime, C.S.Sp., each took a turn presiding over the daily Eucharist, as did Fr. Donald Nesti, C.S.Sp., who received a presidential medal from Duquesne University s president, Ken Gormley. Nearly 100 U.S. Spiritans gathered from across the globe at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for the 2018 Provincial Chapter. The Chapter culminated in the re-election of the current provincial, Fr. Jeffrey Duaime, C.S.Sp., for another three-year term. With input from the Congregation, Fr. Duaime has selected council members to form a cohesive leadership team to guide the province over the next three years. The new Council includes Fr. Martin Vu, C.S.Sp., Fr. Francis Tandoh, C.S.Sp., Fr. Mike Onwuemelie, C.S.Sp. (Second Assistant), Fr. Bill Christy, C.S.Sp. (First Assistant), Fr. Dan Walsh, C.S.Sp. (Bursar), and Dr. Anne Marie Hansen, Lay Spiritan. They began their three-year mandates on August 15. Bishop David Zubik of the Diocese of Pittsburgh presided over the Eucharist on Tuesday, June 19. Fr. Donald Nesti, C.S.Sp., former president of Duquesne University, received the presidential medal from Duquesne University s president, Ken Gormley. Superior General Fr. John Fogarty, C.S.Sp., traveled from Rome to attend the U.S. Provincial Chapter. Participants worked together to prayerfully consider the mission of the Congregation in this important decision-making process.
2 Welcome It is a hopeful and inspiring time for our Congregation. I find myself uplifted and renewed by the powerful Spirit that flowed among us as my fellow confreres and I gathered at the recent Chapter to prayerfully discern God s will for our province. I am overjoyed to see the youthful energy of novices and the wisdom of veteran priests come together at the newly opened novitiate in Chicago. And every day, I feel humbled and blessed to lead the U.S. Province, knowing the Spiritans work is followed, valued and supported by friends like you. Thank you for helping us live out our mission to be with those on the margins, to walk beside them, listen to them and share our faith with them. Spiritan Novitiate Opens in Chicago, Illinois We are pleased to announce that the novitiate for the Spiritan Province of the U.S. officially opened on August 3, Located in the newly purchased formation house in Hyde Park, just three blocks from our parish, St. Ambrose, the novitiate is now ready to receive Spiritans in formation. With plenty of rooms, a carriage house, and a lovely yard for vegetable and flower gardens, the formation house will provide a serene retreat where novices can live in community, immerse themselves in Spiritan charism and grow in their spiritual journeys. Novice Matt Broeren makes his oblation. The first novice to reside there is Matt Broeren, who made his oblation as a novice on August 3. He will be joined in the coming months by a novice from Poland, Kamil Bejgier. Fr. Chris Promis, C.S.Sp., will serve as director of the novitiate, and Fr. Barney Kelly, C.S.Sp., will soon join the community as associate director. An intercommunity novitiate program will begin on September 4, 2018, with fall and spring semesters. Weekly sessions will include 45 novices gathering together for class, prayer and fellowship in nearby Techny, Illinois. We ask for your prayers for these novices and will keep you posted as the year progresses. 2 For more information on becoming a Spiritan, visit path-to-spiritan-life/.
3 Spiritan Mission to Vietnam The Spiritan mission to Vietnam began in September 2007 with the arrival in Ho Chi Minh City of three Spiritan missionaries. They were sent by the General Council of the Congregation to carry out missionary work there but also to establish a foundation for growth for the Congregation. News from SOMA The first three Spiritans to arrive in Vietnam came from very different backgrounds. Fr. Anthony Le Trinh Quang, C.S.Sp., was born and raised in Vietnam but moved to the United States in the 1980s. He joined the Spiritans of the U.S. Province in Houston, Texas, was ordained in 2007 and then returned to his homeland. Fr. Trinh is in charge of the aspirant program and also assists his local parish on an informal basis. Fr. Frederic Rossignol, C.S.Sp., from Belgium, was ordained in He serves as director of the 1st Cycle program, assists in his local parish and also provides pastoral care to French-speaking Catholics in the city. Fr. Pat Palmer, C.S.Sp., hails from Ireland and had previously worked in Sierra Leone, Ghana and Ireland. He is the provincial superior of the circumscription, teaches English and provides pastoral care to English-speaking Catholics in the city. In 2010 the group was joined by Fr. Joseph Quoc Le, C.S.Sp. Fr Joseph was born and raised in Vietnam but left his native country as a young boy. He joined the Congregation in Houston and was ordained in He is the bursar of the group and helps out in the local parish. Six years later Fr. Joseph Lam Nguyen, C.S.Sp., who serves as the formation director, arrived in Ho Chi Minh City from Houston where he was ordained in Like Fr. Trinh Le, Fr. Joseph was born in Vietnam, and came to Houston at a young age. After his ordination he served Continued on page 4 Spiritan Office for Mission Advancement Based in Houston, Texas, the Spiritan Office for Mission Advancement (SOMA) supports the Congregation s public and charitable works of health, education, social services, and religious mission in the United States and throughout the world. The Spiritan foundation in Vietnam has grown over the past eleven years as evidenced by the 42 men presently in formation. Within two years the first confrere to be trained in Vietnam will be ordained, according to Fr. Pat Palmer. After that there will be a steady trickle of new Spiritan priests and Brothers, ready to continue the work of the Congregation and of the Church. Blessed with this abundance of vocations in Vietnam, the Spiritans are in need of a larger, centralized location for housing the men in formation in the Ho Chi Minh City area. Two events to support the construction of Spiritan formation house in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam are planned. Like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. - 1Peter 2:5 For more information on how you can help this cause, please contact: Fr. 5 Provincial Council Gathers in Pennsylvania for Planning and Fellowship The newly appointed U.S. Provincial Council met for a planning session the week of August 6, 2018, in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania. Energized by the very positive spirit experienced during the Provincial Chapter in June, they committed their service as Council to continuing that spirit in the animation of the U.S. Province. Provincial councilors are appointed by the provincial and serve a threeyear mandate. Upon his re-election as provincial at the Chapter in June and in consultation with Chapter delegates, Fr. Jeffrey Duaime, C.S.Sp. selected the following councilors: Fr. Bill Christy, C.S.Sp., Fr. Mike Onwuemelie, C.S.Sp., Fr. Francis Tandoh, C.S.Sp., and Fr. Martin Vu, C.S.Sp. Additionally, based on the recommendation of the Chapter, Lay Spiritan Dr. Anne Marie Hansen was selected to serve as part of this leadership team. Fr. Jeff Duaime will serve another three-year term as provincial. One of the first decisions of the Council was the appointment of Fr. Dan Walsh, C.S.Sp., as the provincial bursar and Fr. John Sawicki, C.S.Sp., as the manager of provincial investments. Fr. Christy was appointed first assistant and Fr. Onwuemelie was appointed second assistant. The various responsibilities of each councilor are available on the leadership page of the U.S. Province website. It was a productive and fulfilling week as this enthusiastic new leadership team gathered to reflect on the direction of the province. We humbly ask for your prayers for them as they guide our province through the next three years. Duquesne University Welcomes New Spiritan Scholar-in-Residence This fall, Fr. Damien Meki, C.S.Sp., will join the Spiritan Scholar-in-Residence program at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Launched in 2013 with the goal of developing a new generation of scholarly specialists in Spiritan Studies, this research-oriented program provides an opportunity for individuals to immerse themselves in the Spiritan tradition using the extensive resources available at Duquesne University. Originally from Senegal, Fr. Meki has most recently served for six years as provincial secretary of the Spiritan Province of France, while also serving as the bursar and formator of their theology house. He was ordained in 1992 and studied at the Duquesne-affiliated Spiritan International School of Theology in Nigeria, earning his Master s degree in theology in Fr. Meki s research project will focus on identifying and organizing the essential elements of Spiritan spirituality into a manual. Upon completion of his project, he will be well-equipped to promote the Spiritan charism in our formation houses globally. U.S. Provincial Council, from left to right: Fr. Francis Tandoh; Fr. Bill Christy; Fr. Martin Vu; Fr. Jeff Duaime; Dr. Anne Marie Hansen, Lay Spiritan; Fr. Dan Walsh; Fr. Mike Onwuemelie. Fr. 6 Interreligious Dialogue Working Group Will Meet in Zanzibar Interreligious Dialogue (IRD) is a foundation of the Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation ministry of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit. Through IRD, we encounter other religious and cultural traditions, and promote interpersonal harmony and world peace, says Fr. Bill Headley, C.S.Sp., founding dean of the Kroc School for Peace Studies at the University of San Diego. Our encounters with other religious traditions enable us to identify shared moral practices, often clouded by the prevailing narrative of violence and conflict perpetrated in the name of religion. Spiritans are present in 60 countries spanning six continents of the world, and the number of Spiritans working in interreligiously-active environments has grown dramatically in recent years. Fr. Headley attributes this in part to the emergence of a more assertive Islam and Christianity across Africa, as well as the growing Spiritan presence in Asia, where ancient faith traditions permeate cultures. To develop Spiritan missiological approaches to evangelization in vibrant interreligious settings, a working group focusing on IRD has been established in advance of the 2020 General Chapter in Poland. Through interreligious dialogue, we encounter other religious and cultural traditions, and promote interpersonal harmony and world peace. Scheduled in early December in Zanzibar, Tanzania, the workshop will bring together Spiritans and experts in IRD ministry to share experiences, identify successes and failures, and collectively develop concrete IRD strategies. Some of the participants will include Fr. Headley, Fr. Binh T. Quach, C.S.Sp., who is based in Asia, and Dr. Marinus Iwuchiwu, an IRD specialist and chair of Duquesne University s theology department. The information gathered will be useful in preparing present and future Spiritan ministers to engage contemporary realities such as religious terrorism and fundamentalism.
