So they went in haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the infant lying in the manger. (Lk 2, 15-16) Like the shepherds, thousands of pilgrims this year will take the road that leads to Bethlehem for Christmas. Already 2.8 million tourists visited the Holy Land since the beginning of the year (according to the Ministry of Tourism in Israel, November 9, 2011). 200,000 pilgrims are expected in December. The East is the land of biblical Revelation. (...) Going back to the place of origins is an opportunity for a profound catechesis, enabling the pilgrim to discover the riches of the Eastern Churches and to meet and encourage the local Christian communities, the living stones of the Church. (Proposition 8 of the Synod for the Middle East) As Christmas pilgrims flock to the birthplace of Jesus, Bethlehem continues to live in the beautiful mystery of the Incarnation. As the city welcomes these new shepherds in search of Jesus, their presence sustains the local economy in the midst of a very unstable political situation. It is not a secret that Bethlehem and the living stones live and survive, thanks to visitors and pilgrimages. There is no doubt that the Palestinians welcome their UNESCO membership on October 31 st. They also hope to see their city on the World Heritage List in 2012, a good way to ensure the future of tourism in the region. UNESCO s primary mission is to contribute to peace and security by promoting collaboration among the nations through education, science and culture through intercultural dialogue, communication and information. There are numerous initiatives that echo this goal including maintenance of the Holy Places and pilgrim centers to welcome and help visitors to pray. Most recently, the Eleona Garden at the Carmel of the Pater on Mount The divine Child still waits for new shepherds, the modern-day pilgrims of Olives, a new place of prayer overlooking Jerusalem was inaugurated on November 15 th (page 4). This Olive Garden reminds one of the places where Jesus loved to pray and teach, a landscaped garden for prayer, quiet, far from the often crowded Via Dolorosa. 168 delegates of the National Association of Diocesan Directors of Pilgrimage in France (ANDDP) were present for the inauguration. The association held its 64th annual conference in the Holy Land this year (page 4). The conference theme was organized around the verse O LORD, You showed favor to Your land (Ps 85:1), with the objective of inviting pilgrims and pilgrimages to the Holy Land. The Peace of Christmas Pilgrimage to these biblical places is important as it is an experience of touching the sacred. Bethlehem is the place where it all began. It is a city rich in messianic expectation and peace! Come to the Holy Land and see places of the Incarnation. Visit the Basilica of the Nativity, the oldest church in the world built over the grotto where Christ was born. Every year, in this small town in Palestine, the divine Child still waits for new shepherds, the modern-day pilgrims. In a spirit of faith, prayer and penance, they bring hope to Bethlehem, notwithstanding the wall, they kneel before the Prince of peace... Bethlehem, a symbol of peace and love is still waiting for that peace. Have a wonderful journey to Christmas!

2 P A G E 2 News: Patriarch and Patriarchate The Grand Magisterium meeting of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher was held in Rome with His Excellency, Most Rev. Edwin Frederick O Brien, Pro- Grand Master of the Order, and Patriarch Fouad Twal, Grand Prior, from November 7 to 10, Father Humam Khzouz, General Administrator, accompanied the Patriarch. The meeting was a first opportunity to welcome Archbishop O Brien. Patriarch Twal said that the Middle East experienced a deep historical shift especially with the application for membership of a State of Palestine to the UN. He then described the religious landscape of the Holy Land, renewed by the increasing number of Catholic migrant workers who require special pastoral care. Amélie de La Hougue Holy Land Christians gather around their Mother The official day of the feast of Our Lady of Palestine is set on October 25 th. Catholics in the Holy Land went solemnly to the Marian Shrine of Deir Rafat in the Valley of Sorek to honor their Mother on Sunday, October 30th. The Virgin Mary is also a daughter of this land. It is a rare opportunity for Christians from Israel and the Palestinian territories to meet and pray together with Mary to seek special protection for her native land, far from any political connotation. His Beatitude, Fouad Twal, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem presided at the Eucharistic celebration. At the foot of the shrine, the faithful recited the prayer to Our Lady of Palestine and received the solemn blessing. Above the pedestal, a bronze statue of Mary, six meters high dominates. The Blessed Virgin is represented with her hand extended to bless her land. In Italy, the feast of Our Lady of Palestine was solemnly celebrated in Florence with the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher (Lieutenancy of Central Italy (Apennines), section of Tuscan) on October 25 th. Until the end of October other Masses were celebrated in all delegations of the Lieutenancy on the recommendation of Lieutenant John Barone Ricasoli. The Patriarch said he was pleased with this initiative and hoped that the feast will spread to all lieutenancies of the Order to promote the world devotion for the Virgin Mary. The theme focused on the verse O LORD, You showed favor to Your land (Ps 85:1), with the objective to encourage pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Bishop William Shomali, Auxiliary Bishop of Jerusalem, opened the conference and read the message of His Beatitude Fouad Twal, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem. The Patriarch s message stated that a pilgrimage to the Holy Land follows three vocations, all having the same purpose: to meet God. First, to be a pilgrim is a vocation. It is an opportunity to meet with Christ in his homeland. Secondly, the Patriarch underlined that to organize pilgrimages to the Holy Land is a true mission, emphasizing the importance of the spiritual fruits that come from a well-prepared pilgrimage. The third vocation of pilgrimages is the reception of pilgrims by the local Church our local Church in all its structures and facilities: parishes, shrines, religious communities and sanctuaries welcome pilgrims. We continue to issue green cards and do our best to facilitate spiritual animation. We look forward to future plans of building chapels for the sacrament of penance and reconciliation. We invite and encourage all pilgrims to attend Sunday Mass in a parish to meet the living stones of our Church. The Patriarchate recognizes and acknowledges the Custody of the Holy Land for its laudable efforts of welcoming pilgrims both at centers for reception of pilgrims and at the holy sites, organizing and facilitating the celebration of Masses in various holy places.

Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Druze communities were represented. Pope Benedict XVI brought together nearly 300 dignitaries of all faiths and even non-believers - to Assisi in Italy - in a dialogue for peace two weeks ago. The Holy Father received in Rome a delegation of religious leaders from Israel which included the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, His Beatitude Fouad Twal, the Chief Rabbinate of Israel Yonah Metzge; the leader of imams in Israel, Mohammed Kiwan; and the leader of the Druze community, Moufak Tarif. This Council of Religious leaders in Israel intends to coordinate actions for a peaceful coexistence of the many religious communities in the country. Patriarch Twal, expressed enthusiasm saying that this is one way, among others to inform and educate many about the current situation and the countless initiatives being undertaken to promote further dialogues for reconciliation, unity and Pope Benedict XVI called religious leaders to engage with courage to promote peace in the Holy Land on November 10 th peace. In his speach, the Pope spoke of the importance of the commitment of all religions to build a culture of peace: In our troubled times, dialogue between different religions is becoming ever more important in the generation of an atmosphere of mutual understanding and respect that can lead to friendship and solid trust in each other. This is pressing for the religious leaders of the Holy Land who, while living in a place full of memories sacred to our traditions, are tested daily by the difficulties of living together in harmony Since its establishment in 2007, the Council endeavors to foster understanding and to bring together people of different faiths and communities in Israel. It has in some way helped to resolve conflicts and differences throughout the country. Pope Benedict XVI met with the Council during his journey in the Holy Land in 2009 and invited members to meet in Rome. The Council accepted the invitation, as stated in a press release of the Israeli Embassy to the Holy See. According to the statement, the meeting will be the first of its kind in the history of relations between Israel and the Holy See, and in the annals of relations between the Pope and the Holy Land. The Holy Father said, he prayed at the Western Wall for Peace in the Holy Land in May 2009, saying: God of all ages, on my visit to Jerusalem, the City of Peace, spiritual home to Jews, Christians and Muslims alike, I bring before You the joys, the hopes and the inspirations, the trials, the suffering and the pain of all Your people throughout the world. God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, hear the cry of the afflicted, the fearful, the bereft [...] May [God] hear the prayer of all men and women who ask him for the peace of Jerusalem Druze-Christian meeting continues the spirit of Assisi Archbishop Antonio Franco, Apostolic Nuncio in Israel, accompanied by Bishop Marcuzzo, Latin Patriarchal Vicar of Israel, and Archbishop Elias Shacour, Melkite Greek Catholic Archbishop of Akko, Haifa and Nazareth (Galilee), met Sheikh Muaffaq Tarif, head of the Druze community in Julis, northeast of Acre in the Northern District of Israel on Wednesday, November 16 th.the Druze are descendants of Ismailis, Ishmael being the first son of Abraham, a branch of Shiism. They are strongly present in Galilee, numbering to 118,000 in Israel, according to an American overview report of The success of this meeting is a tribute to at least three events. The first is probably the October 14th Interreligious encounter of Assisi, where 300 religious leaders gathered for a day of dialogue for peace. The second is the November 10 meeting of religious leaders of Israel with the Holy Father at the Vatican. The third event is the festival of Eid al-adha, the second principal feast of the Druze, celebrated by Muslims just a few days earlier. The main festival is that of the prophet Jethro, is celebrated in April Louis-Marie de Linage

6 P A G E 6 N E W S L E T T E R J E RU S A L E M Projects of the Latin Patriarchate 1) Church construction in Aqaba The dynamic border city of Aqaba, located south of Jordan on the edge of the Red Sea will have a church within two years. It is a first and a real joy for Christians who for several years have gathered in a large Hall for Sunday Mass. For many years, the Latin Patriarchate desired to build a church in Aqaba, to meet the needs of the faithful. Work was launched. The Stella Maris Church will be completed within two years and will replace the Hall where Father Issam Zu mot has celebrated Mass every Sunday for the past two years. It is a real welcome project for Christians in the area who represent 2% of the city population of 88,780 inhabitants. A challenge for the Patriarchate Aqaba is a strategic position for the Patriarchate and the future of Christians, because it attracts a diverse population, specifically attributed to being: a port city with many migrants, a seaside resort attracting tourists, an industrial and administrative center, and an Israeli border city. The new Church will serve both local Christians of Aqaba and those of different nationalities including Palestinians, Filipinos, Sri Lankans, Europeans and others. With this church, the Latin Patriarchate wants to gather its faithful together and serve the pastoral needs of families affected by challenging life situations: increasing number of divorces, cases of domestic violence, stress... Catechesis will be offered and adapted to migrants, foreign workers, tourists, local Palestinians. It will be a center that fosters a family life atmosphere, where all can share the same faith in a dialogue of openness and respect for diversity. The new Church will open in 2013 and will accommodate at least 350 people. 2) Rameh High School Extension Rameh is a village in Northern Galilee with 8,000 inhabitants, 55% are Christians, 35% Druze and 15% Muslims. In the heart of the village is the high school, which is being expanded by the Latin Patriarchate. Its fundamental role is to promote unity within its population. Rameh has 141 Christian families and the number is increasing, says Father Illario Antoniazzi, pastor of St. Anthony Latin parish, although the number of children in every Christian family declined. Formerly, the average children per family was six, now it is three or four. Relations with Muslim and Druze communities are very good, he rejoices. The secret of the village? The school according to Father Illario has an essential role. Today there are 650 students from Rameh and the neighboring areas. It is a true oasis of peace and tranquility. We have beautiful bonds of friendship with families of the

7 l o v e t h e H O L Y l a n d a n d b e l o v e d P A G E 7 village, and students show that we can live together in our diversity. (...) Having a school in Rameh prevents Christian families from leaving the area. This is very important for us, Christians. Aware of this need, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem on May 1 st, initiated an expansion project with the construction of a new section. The new building will have four floors with a multipurpose hall for the use of the parish and the school, laboratories, classrooms and administration offices. With this school expansion, students can continue their high school education, and enable families to remain in the village. Students can also go to the government high school in Rameh and continue their studies at the university in Haifa. The new building will be operational in February ) Renovation of part of the Seminary in Beit Jala The Latin Patriarchate seminary was established in Jerusalem over 150 years ago by Patriarch Giuseppe Valerga in Since then, the Patriarchate has carefully maintained a balance of spiritual and material support and in its operations. The Seminary transferred to Beit Jala in The Patriarchate has undertaken renovation projects in different sections to provide the seminarians with an orderly, clean, comfortable, welcoming environment conducive for learning and studies. The project for this month is the renovation of sanitary facilities. This year, the Latin seminary received 28 major seminarians and 54 minor seminarians. Students come from Jordan; some are Palestinian, including one native of Gaza, others from Israel, and one American seminarian. There are seven priests in the administration and formation team of the Seminary, who provide spiritual direction, formation, and teach philosophy and theology. Amélie de La Hougue

8 The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem Relic of the Holy Cross venerated in Montreal The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem invited Bishop William Shomali, to celebrate the solemn Mass along with Bishop Louis Dicaire, Grand Prior of the Order (Lieutenancy of Montreal), in honor of Our Lady of Palestine on November 6th. A relic of the True Cross was thereafter venerated with devotion by some 900 faithful. Mass was celebrated at St. Joseph s Oratory on Mount Royal (Montreal, Quebec), with the Melkite Choir leading the chants. Fill the oil lamps The Bishop invited the faithful to meditate on the Gospel, the parable of the ten virgins. Evoking the metaphor of the oil lamps, Bishop Shomali recalled that as we await for the return of Christ, our Bishop Shomali brought with him a relic of the Holy Cross to Montreal lamps threaten to burn out of oil and we need to refill them. This oil may well be, for instance, and mostly should be, the daily reading of the Scripture. He also spoke about the Holy Land: To fill your lamps with oil and get a better understanding of the Word of God, I suggest you plan a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. You may visit the holy places where God has spoken through the prophets, and Jesus was born, taught, suffered, died and rose again. Such a pilgrimage will enhance your faith, your hope and your charity. In the Holy Land, pilgrims do not miss Calvary, where the Cross of Christ was planted. It is precisely from Jerusalem to Montreal that Bishop Shomali brought a relic of the Holy Cross. The faithful gathered in the Basilica venerated the precious relic, encapsulated to a cross of olive wood from the Holy Land. A reception followed. The collection made by the youth of Palestinian heritage living in Montreal, was offered for the Holy Land. In the previous week, Bishop Shomali was in Washington, DC as a panelist at the Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation (HCEF) conference to discuss the situation of Christians in the land of Christ. While Bishop Shomali and Archbishop O Brien there, he met with Archbishop Edwin Frederick O Brien, who was appointed Pro-Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem by Pope Benedict XVI on August 29.
