GATHERING IN GOD'S NAME The greets the people with a welcome In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen. Hosanna to the Son of David, the King of Israel. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna, in the highest. This morning we begin the Great Week of the Christian year. During Lent we have been preparing for the celebration of our Lord's death and resurrection, by prayer and by works of love and self-denial. Today we come together with the Church throughout the world to call to mind, and to express in word and action, our Lord's Passover from death to life, which is the centre of the Easter mystery. Today we greet him as our King, although we know his crown is thorns and his throne, a cross. We follow him this week from the glory of the palms to the glory of the resurrection by way of the dark road of suffering and death. United with him in his suffering on the cross may we share his resurrection and new life. The people hold up their palm crosses and branches for a blessing. Let us pray. Blessed are you Almighty God, whose son Jesus Christ entered in triumph into the holy city this day to complete his work as our Messiah. May these branches (and crosses) be signs of the victory of your Son. May we who carry them in his name ever hail him as our king, and follow him in the way that leads to eternal life; who lives and reigns in glory with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen. 2

Gospel Deacon The Lord be with you. And also with you. A reading from the holy gospel according to Mark Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ. When Jesus and the disciples had come near Jerusalem and had reached Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, just say this, The Lord needs them. And he will send them immediately. This took place to fulfil what had been spoken through the prophet, saying, Tell the daughter of Zion, Look, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey. The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them; they brought the donkey and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven! When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, Who is this? The crowds were saying, This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee. This is the Gospel of the Lord. THE PROCESSION OF PALMS Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. Let us pray. Merciful God, as we enter this holy week and gather at your house of prayer, turn our hearts again to Jerusalem, to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, that, united with Christ and all the faithful, we may one day enter in triumph the city not made with hands, the new Jerusalem, eternal in the heavens, where, with you and the Holy Spirit, Christ lives in glory for ever. Amen. Let us go forth, praising Jesus our Messiah. In the name of Christ. Amen. 3

Order of procession: thurifer, crucifer and acolytes, master of ceremonies, the clergy, the people. During the procession and opening hymns all hold their palm crosses and branches. PROCESSIONAL HYMN: All glory, praise and honour ENTRANCE HYMN: Ride on, ride on in Majesty SENTENCE Deacon At the name of Jesus, every knee shall bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:10-11 PRAYER OF THE DAY Deacon Merciful God, as we enter this holy week and gather at your house of prayer, turn our hearts again to Jerusalem, to the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, that, united with Christ and all the faithful, we may one day enter in triumph the city not made with hands, the new Jerusalem, eternal in the heavens, where, with you and the Holy Spirit, Christ lives in glory for ever. Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD All sit PSALM , O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good: his mercy en dures for ever. 2 Let Israel now pro claim: that his mercy en dures for ever. 19 Open me the gates of righteousness: and I will enter and give thanks to the Lord. 4

20 This is the gate of the Lord: the righteous shall enter it. 21 I will praise you for you answered me: and have be come my sal vation. 22 The stone that the builders re jected: has be come the head of the corner. 23 This is the Lord s doing: and it is marvel lous in our eyes. 24 This is the day that the Lord has made: let us re joice and be glad in it. 25 O Lord save us we pray: O Lord send us pros perity. 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord: from the house of the Lord we bless you. 27 The Lord is God and he has given us light: guide the festal throng up to the horns of the altar. 28 You are my God and I will praise you: you are my God I will ex alt you. 29 O give thanks to the Lord for he is good: and his mercy en dures for ever. SECOND READING A reading from the letter to the Philippians Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient 5

to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Hear the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GRADUAL HYMN: The glory of our King was seen - (Tune 514) GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Cantor Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory! Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory! Christ became obedient for us even to death, dying on the cross. Therefore God raised him on high and gave him a name above all other names Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ, King of endless glory! During the Passion, the congregation is asked to proclaim the crowd parts with vigour. The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. The text of the Passion is provided. SERMON: Fr Neil Vearing THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Deacon Let us pray for the world and for the Church. Periods of silence may be briefly kept for personal prayer. Each petition ends with this response: Lord in your mercy, hear our prayer. Conclusion to intercessions After a brief pause 6

Intercessor Hear us Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. THE CONFESSION Sit /kneel Deacon God shows his love for us in that, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Silence Let us then show our love for him by confessing our sins in penitence and faith. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you, through our own fault, in thought, and word, and deed, and in what we have left undone. We are heartily sorry, and repent of all our sins. For your Son our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen. ABSOLUTION Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith: pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE GREETING OF PEACE All stand We are the body of Christ His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. The peace of God is shared with each other OFFERTORY HYMN: O sacred head sore wounded 7

THE PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS Preparation of the gifts of bread and wine at the altar. PRAYER OVER THE GIFTS Let us pray. God of all goodness and grace, receive the gifts we offer; and grant that our whole life may give you glory and praise; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation: through your goodness we have this bread to offer, which earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the bread of life. Blessed be God for ever. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation: through your goodness we have this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become for us the cup of salvation. Blessed be God for ever. INVITATION TO HOLY COMMUNION All communicants of other churches are invited to join us in the sharing of Holy Communion. If you are not a communicant we encourage you to come forward for a blessing. Please indicate your desire for a blessing by holding your hands behind your back as you kneel or stand at the Altar Rail. THE THANKSGIVING Cantor The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right to give our thanks and praise. All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty Creator, ever-living God. 8

We give you thanks and praise for our Saviour Jesus Christ, who became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. He offered the one true sacrifice for sin, and obtained an eternal deliverance for his people. The tree of defeat became the tree of victory; where life was lost, there life has been restored. By his grace we are able to triumph over every evil, and to walk in the way of his love. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven, we proclaim your great and glorious name, for ever praising you and singing: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Merciful God, we thank you for these gifts of your creation, this bread and wine, and we pray that by your Word and Holy Spirit, we who eat and drink them may be partakers of Christ s body and blood. 9

On the night he was betrayed Jesus took bread; and when he had given you thanks he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat. This is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. After supper, he took the cup, and again giving you thanks he gave it to his disciples saying, Drink from this, all of you. This is my blood of the new covenant shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith, Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Therefore we do as our Saviour has commanded: proclaiming his offering of himself made once for all upon the cross, his mighty resurrection and glorious ascension, and looking for his coming again, we celebrate, with this bread and this cup, his one perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. As we eat and drink this holy sacrament, renew us by your Spirit that we may be united in the body of your Son and serve you as a royal priesthood in the joy of your eternal kingdom. Receive our praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our Lord, with whom and in whom, by the power of the Holy Spirit, we worship you in songs of never ending praise: Blessing and honour and glory and power are yours for ever and ever. Amen 10

As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are confident to pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. BREAKING OF THE BREAD As this broken bread was once many grains, which have been gathered together and made one bread: so may your church be gathered from the ends of the earth into your kingdom. The priest and sanctuary party receive their Communion Jesus, Lamb of God, have mercy on us Jesus, bearer of our sins, have mercy on us. Jesus redeemer of the world, grant us your peace 11

INVITATION Come let us take this holy sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ in remembrance that he died for us, and feed on him in our hearts by faith with thanksgiving. The people receive Holy Communion. As the sacrament is delivered the communicant responds. Amen. There are many different versions of this meal, ours is based on the Jewish one, and includes the Holy Communion instituted by Jesus at the Last Supper. There is limited seating (48) for this symbolic meal. Please indicate on the sheet at the back of the church if you intend to participate.
