THE FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY JANUARY 28, 2018 We pray that all who enter the Church of the Holy Comforter experience God s presence in this community of faith, a community that through Christ strives to be loving, joyous, inclusive, and transforming and filled with God s grace. The Church of the Holy Comforter welcomes you to this service. This service leaflet, The Book of Common Prayer (red), The Hymnal 1982 (blue), Wonder, Love, and Praise (green), and Lift Every Voice and Sing (black) provide the resources needed for participation in our worship. The hymns which begin with an S are in the front of The Hymnal Unless noted by either WLP or LEVAS the hymns are found in The Hymnal We hope that you will feel at home at Holy Comforter and will return again soon and often. GENERAL INFORMATION Guest Book ~ Our guest book is located on a stand at the back of the church. If you are new to Holy Comforter, please sign the guest book. We are so glad that you are worshipping with us today! Receiving Communion ~ To receive, stand or kneel around the Holy Table, simply hold your hands palms up and the priest or deacon will place a piece of bread in them. To receive wine from the chalice, assist the chalice bearer by holding the base and helping to guide it to your lips. Alternately, you may dip the bread into the cup, or, if you wish, you may cross your arms on your chest to indicate that you do not wish to receive the wine. If you do not wish to receive the bread or the wine, we welcome you to receive a blessing to indicate this, please cross your arms on your chest. Gluten free bread is available; simply ask the clergy. Healing Prayer and Votive Candles ~ During our time of communion, you are invited to the Earth Banner to request personal prayers from one of our healing prayer ministers, who will be vested in a white alb; this may be a prayer for yourself or others. You may also light a candle in the Lady Chapel, which is through the double doors to the left of the pulpit, or at the votive stand in the back of the church. Votive candles may also be lit before or after the service. Child Care ~ Our youngest children, newborns through 4 years old, are cared for in our nursery located next door in the Parish House. Ushers can guide you. Child Care for all ages begins at 9am so that you can attend choir rehearsal or adult education. Even our youngest children are welcome to remain with us in the church for the service if preferred. Enjoy our new baby/toddler/young child area in the pews. Restrooms are located in this building behind the choir area; go out the doors by the Earth banner and turn left. One of the restrooms contains a baby-changing station. Ushers can guide you. Additional restrooms are in the parish house, the building right next door.

The season after the Epiphany (January 6) is a season of Ordinary Time, which includes four to nine Sundays, depending on the date of Easter. It is called ordinary because its Sundays are given numbers (first, second, third, etc.) after the Feast of the Epiphany. It stands between the two great Christological cycles of Advent- Christmas-Epiphany and Lent-Easter-Pentecost. Its central theme is the calling of disciples and the early ministry of Jesus. The First Sunday focuses on the Baptism of Christ and the Last Sunday on the Transfiguration. Prelude Here I Am to Worship Randome Ringeres Handbelle Choire Announcements A Minute of Centering and Silence, introduced by the Prayer for Quiet Confidence At the Procession Hymn 448 O love, how deep, how broad, how high Deus tuorum Opening Acclamation Presider All Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And blessed be God s kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Blessing of the Children Children are invited to pray with the clergy in the circle and then follow the banner to Children s Chapel or return to sit with their family. Children s Chapel is not held on the 2 nd Sunday of each month when we have the 4:30pm Story Time service. Song of Praise Hymn 900 (WLP) Glory to the God in the highest John Rutter Presider Presider The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. Almighty and everlasting God, you govern all things both in heaven and on earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of your people, and in our time grant us your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The First Reading Deuteronomy 18:15-20 The Proclamation of the Word Moses said: The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you shall heed such a prophet. This is what you requested of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said: If I hear the voice of the Lord my God any more, or ever again see this great fire, I will die. Then the Lord replied to me: They are right in what they have said. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will put my words in the mouth 2

of the prophet, who shall speak to them everything that I command. Anyone who does not heed the words that the prophet shall speak in my name, I myself will hold accountable. But any prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, or who presumes to speak in my name a word that I have not commanded the prophet to speak that prophet shall die. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm 111 The Refrain is first sung by the choir and then by all. The cantor sings the verses of the psalm and all respond with the refrain where indicated. Refrain 1 Hallelujah! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, * in the assembly of the upright, in the congregation. 2 Great are the deeds of the Lord! * they are studied by all who delight in them. Refrain 3 His work is full of majesty and splendor, * and his righteousness endures for ever. 4 He makes his marvelous works to be remembered; * the Lord is gracious and full of compassion. Refrain 5 He gives food to those who fear him; * he is ever mindful of his covenant. 6 He has shown his people the power of his works * in giving them the lands of the nations. Refrain 7 The works of his hands are faithfulness and justice; * all his commandments are sure. 8 They stand fast for ever and ever, * because they are done in truth and equity. Refrain 9 He sent redemption to his people; he commanded his covenant for ever; * holy and awesome is his Name. 10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; * those who act accordingly have a good understanding; his praise endures for ever. Refrain The Epistle 1 Corinthians 8:1-13 Now concerning food sacrificed to idols: we know that all of us possess knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. Anyone who claims to know something does not yet have the necessary knowledge; but anyone who loves God is known by him. 3

Hence, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that no idol in the world really exists, and that there is no God but one. Indeed, even though there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth as in fact there are many gods and many lords yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. It is not everyone, however, who has this knowledge. Since some have become so accustomed to idols until now, they still think of the food they eat as food offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. Food will not bring us close to God. We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if others see you, who possess knowledge, eating in the temple of an idol, might they not, since their conscience is weak, be encouraged to the point of eating food sacrificed to idols? So by your knowledge those weak believers for whom Christ died are destroyed. But when you thus sin against members of your family, and wound their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a cause of their falling, I will never eat meat, so that I may not cause one of them to fall. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Sequence Alleluia and Verse The Alleluia is sung by all. The verse is sung by the choir and all respond with the Alleluia. Verse: Great are the works of the Lord; and studied by all who delight in them. The Holy Gospel Mark 1:21-28 The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Jesus and his disciples went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God. But Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be silent, and come out of him! And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him. At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon The Very Rev. Dr. Hilary B. Smith 4

A period of silence follows the sermon Nicene Creed BCP 358 Prayers of the As the people gathered in Capernaum to hear Jesus words, so too have we come together to hear God s word. Let us boldly offer our prayers to God, saying: For the world in which we live and to which we are called, let us pray to the Lord: Remembering especially Donald, our President, for the nations of the world, and for world peace, let us pray to the Lord: Remembering especially Michael, our Presiding Bishop, Shannon and Susan, our Bishops, for the church of Christ, zealous in mission, compassionate in service, let us pray to the Lord: Lord, have mercy For this congregation and for our hearing the word, let us pray to the Lord: For all who labor in the world and in the church, let us pray to the Lord: For those who are sick, and for those who care for them, let us pray to the Lord: For the homeless and for the refugees, let us pray to the Lord: For those with whom we rejoice, and for those whose joy is known only in the secrets of their hearts, let us pray to the Lord: Here other intercessions are offered. Presider O God, we commend to your care all for whom we pray, in the confidence that your love for them is greater than anything we can know or imagine. Hear us, through Christ our Lord. Amen. Confession of Sin and Absolution BCP 360 The Peace Presider The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. 5

The Holy Communion Offertory Anthem Jesus Christ, the Apple Tree arr. Carl Schalk The tree of life my soul hath seen laden with fruit and always green. The trees of nature fruitless be compared with Christ the apple tree. His beauty doth all things excel by faith I know but ne'er can tell the glory which I now can see in Jesus Christ the apple tree. For happiness I long have sought and pleasure dearly I have bought. I missed of all but now I see 'tis found in Christ the apple tree. I'm weary with my former toil; here I will sit and rest a while under the shadow I will be of Jesus Christ the apple tree. This fruit does make my soul to thrive; it keeps my dying faith alive which makes my soul in haste to be with Jesus Christ the apple tree. At the Presentation Hymn 533 How wondrous and great thy works God of praise Old 104th The Great Thanksgiving, Eucharistic Prayer B BCP 367 Sanctus Hymn S-128 Holy, holy, holy Lord The Lord's Prayer Presider As our Savior Christ has taught us, let us pray to God, who is our Mother and William Mathias All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread Hymn Be known to us, Lord Jesus Gary James The Refrain is first sung by the choir and then by all. The choir sings the verses and all respond with the Refrain where indicated. The bread which we break, alleluia, is the communion of the body of Christ. One body are we, alleluia, for though many we share one bread. Refrain Refrain Communion Hymn 577 God is love Ubi caritas Hymn 339 Deck thyself, my soul with gladness Schmuck dich 6

The Commissioning of a Eucharistic Visitor Post-communion Prayer In the name of our congregation, take this holy sacrament to those who could not be present with us this morning so that they may share with us in the body and blood of Christ. We who are many are one body, because we all share one bread, one cup. Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
