Gordon McBride, COM Chair St. Philip s In The Hills, Tucson PHOENIX The Episcopal Church is looking for a few good men and women to lead its congregations in this time of rapid change. Perhaps you are someone who has gifts of leadership and a calling to ordained ministry. Even if you only think this might be true you should think of yourself as called to explore that possibility. An essential step in the ordination process is the annual Day of Discernment and Information. This year the Day will be held at Trinity Cathedral, 100 W. Roosevelt St., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 9. Should I go to the Day? The answer is yes if: you think you may have a call to ordained ministry. you are a parish rector who has someone exploring the possibility of Holy Orders. you are a vestry member where someone has expressed a call. you are a member of a discernment committee for someone in your parish. you are the spouse or partner of someone who is exploring a call. All of these yeses are equally valid for the diaconate as for the priesthood. The Day will have special workshops for all orders of ministry and categories of participants. The Day will offer lots of information about the ordination process: steps to take, roles of parish clergy, discernment committees, and vestries. And most particularly about how a person and a congregation go about discerning a call and nominating a person to study for Holy Orders. Speakers drawn from our own Commission on Ministry family, will include Bishop Kirk Smith, and will deal with some of the inner and spiritual concerns that a person entering the ordination process may have, as well as the possible conclusion someone might come to: ordination as deacon or priest or reaffirmation of a vital lay ministry. Full written information on the ordination process in the Diocese of Arizona is available on the diocesan website. Go to then click on the Order to which you feel you may be called. This material can either be read online or can be downloaded. Please take the time to read it carefully. The May 9 Day meets the requirement in the Diocese of Arizona guide books (page 13 in the Deacon book and page 10 in the Priest book) to attend a Holy Orders Day of Discernment and Information. The shifted emphasis onto discernment flows from past experience: that discernment is the most difficult, but perhaps the most important step in the whole journey toward ordination. At this critical juncture in the history in the Episcopal Church there may be nothing more crucial than the call and training of top-quality persons for the church s ordained ministry. Struggling with a sense of call? This Day is the place to start. Already beginning in the process with a discernment committee? This Day may help to clarify issues that have come up. Wondering about the role of local congregations in the call and ordination process? This Day will offer practical guidance for helping individuals wrestle with the hard decisions around responding to God s call. Not all calls are alike. Not all responses are identical. The Bishop and the Commission on Ministry honor your sense of call. Lunch is provided. Naturally a reservation is necessary for the Day so that adequate resources and food can be available. Please respond to Gary Gorman at ext. 310 or gary@azcathedral.org. Questions can be directed to Diocesan House for the Commission on Ministry.
3 April 2009 ArizonaLife A3 Stewardship University: tools you can use The Rev. Canon Timothy Dombek Canon to the Ordinary It probably goes without saying that congregations annually struggle to fund their statements of mission (budgets), and probably more so today, in this economy, than at any other time. Many congregations don t realize that help is at hand. On April 4 in Phoenix and April 25 in Tucson, the Diocese of Arizona is presenting Stewardship University: Generous Giving and Joyful Doing. Stewardship University is committed to educating, supporting, and serving congregations in their mission to help God s people grow in their relationship with Jesus through the use of the time, talents and finances God has entrusted to them. Come and learn how this approach to stewardship can transform the lives of your parishioners, and transform the mission and ministry of your congregation. The presenters for this first offering The Rev. Canon Timothy Dombek Canon to the Ordinary Arizona is growing and finally topped Nevada as the nation s fastest growing state in 2006, according to the Census Bureau. Forecasters predict that the land between Phoenix and Tucson will become one metropolitan area by Statewide, Arizona is expected to grow 209% by So how will the Episcopal Church meet the needs of such a surging population? In 2005, the Alleluia Fund was created to plant 10 new churches in 10 years, as well as support new growth initiatives for existing congregations. How have we be en doing? We have six new congregations: St. Jude s, of courses will be Carol Maher, Alleluia Fund Coordinator for the Diocese and myself. Topics to be covered at Stewardship University include: Improving Your Annual Giving; Creating a Legacy Society and Why You Should Have One; Helping People Discern Their Spiritual Gifts and Talents; and Enhancing Your Hospitality. Presentations and materials will also address planned giving, capital campaigns and creating endowments for funding future ministry. Join us for a day to consider how looking at our time, talent, and treasure differently can change lives especially our own even in a turbulent economy! Choose which location suits you best: Stewardship University in Phoenix will be held at Trinity Cathedral, 100 W Roosevelt Street, on Saturday, April 4, beginning with registration at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 3 p.m. Lunch is included in the $15 per person registration fee, which also covers the cost of materials. The Phoenix; Catedral de la Trinidad, Phoenix; San Andrés, Tucson; Church of the Nativity, Phoenix; Prince of Peace Mission, Peoria; and St. Paul the Apostle Sudanese Mission, Phoenix the first free-standing Episcopal Sudanese congregation in the United States! New locations we are looking at include the Arizona Sun Corridor, Gilbert, Marana, and Buckeye. But church planting takes resources. It takes $100,000 a year for three years, just to start one new church not including the expenses of land and buildings. Additionally, many existing ministries throughout our diocese can also Stewardship University in Tucson will be held at Grace St. Paul s Episcopal Church, 2331 E Adams Street, on Saturday, April 25, again beginning with registration at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 3 p.m. To register for Stewardship University at either location, please contact Shantae Carver at the Diocesan House, , or send in your $15 check or money order to: Stewardship University, Diocese of Arizona, 114 W. Roosevelt Street, Phoenix, AZ Only paid in advanced registrations will be considered confirmed attendees for lunch and handouts. Don t miss attending these opportunities to improve the stewardship ministry in your congregation even in difficult economic times, because stewardship is about discipleship, not membership, just as raising up generous givers is about discipleship and not just paying the bills. Sign-up for Stewardship University today and help your congregation grow its giving! 7 April 2009 ArizonaLife A7 Restoration starts on St. Paul's windows Greta Huls Canon for Communications TOMBSTONE Associated Crafts workmen Greg Bayless and Tim Hudson arrived in Tombstone on Feb. 20 to remove the first three sanctuary windows from St. Paul's for repair, restoration, and re-leading. The "missing" windows are the Crown, Sheep and Trinity windows and the spaces where they belong are temporarily covered with plywood. (You may consider bringing your own flashlight to church...) The State of Arizona has put all grants on hold due to the financial crisis and St. Paul's, which was counting on a 60% grant, has altered their plans. Since it is not foreseeable that the financial situation will be improved for some time, the church's Bishop's Committee has, with consent of its congregation, decided to use the funds raised to date to start with the restoration of the windows that are in greatest danger of crashing. The large 4 feet by 9 1/2 feet stained glass windows dating back to 1882 are in peril of breaking down entirely, and the congregation does not feel that it would be right to let the wonderful people and organizations which donated to this cause wait any longer to see this work get underway. It may be years before the State recovers sufficiently to reinstitute the grants and by then it may be too late. The steps for restoration are carefully planned: 1. Bayless and Hudson arrived with tools of the trade. Bayless, who has been doing this work for at least 20 years, carefully went around each inside frame with a small pry bar. As he removed the pieces, Hudson cut off the heads of the nails and removed them. The frames are being stored in the shed. 2. The windows were brought down to waiting arms, lower half first. They were then carried outside to a sawhorse and examined for any damage. The windows were loaded into the trailer and stowed for the trip to Gilbert. *Because the windows of St. Paul's remain in their redwood sashes (frames), the windows were stabilized and transported to Associated Crafts in Gilbert in an enclosed trailer. If the windows were to be transported in panes or pieces, a box would have been built on site for each pane. 3. Plywood was traced, cut and inserted into the open spaces. 4. Once the windows get to the shop, they are again examined and documented. First, a "cartoon" is made. This is a rubbing taken by laying draft paper over the window and tracing the existing lead lines to get an illustration of the window. This is used in the reconstruction of the window to get it historically correct and to get all the glass back in the right places. 5. Each pane of glass is carefully removed and cleaned. 6. Cracks and breaks are repaired with a transparent epoxy; color is applied where necessary. 7. Metal braces are repaired or replaced as necessary. 8. All new lead will be placed between each pane of glass as well as around the border, a process known as re-leading. Greg Bayless of Associated Crafts carefully cuts the rope that raises and lowers the bottom portion of the Crown window at St. Paul s, Tombstone. The Crown window was one of three removed for restoration on Feb. 20. Details of some of the damage is below. Tony Roselli/St. Paul s, Tombstone 9. The windows are put back together and brought home to us! Each window requires four to eight weeks and about five people, including office staff and craftsmen, to complete the work. St. Paul's family certainly hopes the See the slideshow at wsdetail_2/555 windows will be home in time for Easter on April 12. A fourth large window will be protected with a special acrylic safety shield at that time. Associated Crafts is willing to do the remaining five large windows which are in great peril, one or two at a time at a cost of $5700 each, and they will contract for these as donations are received. Anyone who may be able to help may send their contributions to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 1489, Tombstone, AZ and please mark "windows" on the memo line of the check, or directly to Tombstone Federal Credit Union, 101 E. Allen St., P.O.
