1 Season of Advent The antiphons for the Advent season are characterized by prophetic longing. Israel waits for the Lord who will come with justice and righteousness. When he comes all will be changed; all will be made right. creator alme siderum, the chant hymn tune associated with the Advent hymn Creator of the Stars of Night, would be especially appropriate for the texts of this season. This melody is also useful as an introduction to chant tunes, since it begins with a cheerful, major sound. Towards the end of the Advent season, during the time of the O Antiphons (Dec ), the tune for O Come, O Come Emmanuel, with its refrain in English or Latin, might be used. O Come, O Come Emanuel is a later chant setting of the O Antiphons and is familiar and popular, making it another excellent entry point to singing of the propers. The season of Advent is a hopeful time. The prophetic voice is certain. The Lord will not only come, he will come soon. 2 Season of Christmas The antiphons of the Christmas season have a breathless quality, and are filled with acts of faith in the mystery of the Incarnation. Singing these antiphons allows for an opportunity to express and renew our faith in these mysteries and to keep the Christmas season in its fullness. Advent hopes have been fulfilled. The Savior, whom the prophets saw from afar in their mystic hope, has appeared, and he is everything they had said and more. He is the all-powerful Word come down from heaven, begotten, the Son of the Father. Suggested seasonal tune: puer nobis The Vigil of Christmas Today you know the Lord will come To save and set his people free; And when the morning comes at last, Behold! you shall his glory see. Suggested tune: veni emmanuel (with refrain) Christmas: The Mass during the Night The Lord has spoken unto me. He said to me, You are my Son. This day I have begotten you. This day I have begotten you. Suggested tune: puer nobis 8

3 The Baptism of the Lord The Lord was baptized, heav n unfurled; The Spirit came down like a dove. My Son, belov d, who pleases me, The Father thundered from above. Suggested tune: deo gratias Season of Lent The antiphons of Lent are confident pleas from the heart, asking God for help. There is an intimacy about them as they express trust in God, who is always there to help. God has been reliable in the past and will continue to be a source of comfort in every present danger. The Gospels of Ash Wednesday and the First Sunday of Lent suggest that the dangers of Lent are interior and spiritual. One might be performing acts to be seen, rather than for God (Ash Wednesday). Or one might be tempted by the world, the flesh, and the devil (First Sunday of Lent). No matter what the difficulty, God is faithful and we put our trust in God s never-failing help. 4 Season of Easter The Eastertide entrance antiphons are exuberantly joyful, as they consider the Paschal Mystery from different angles. In week one, the antiphon sings the Son s own song as he rises and initiates the Church into the Resurrection. In the antiphon for week two, the Church makes its own St. Paul s beautiful admonition to new Christians: Like newborn infants, you must long for the pure, spiritual milk. The remaining weeks sing joyfully about the salvation the world has come to know in the Resurrection. Then, just before Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit, the Church repeats in the antiphon of the Seventh Sunday of Easter the same sentiments it sang during week two of Lent, on Transfiguration Sunday. Of you, Lord, my heart has spoken, seek his face; hide not your face from me. Suggested seasonal tune: duke street Easter Sunday Lo, I have risen from the dead, And I am with you as I said. On me, Lord, you have laid your hand: Too wonderful to understand. 5 The Most Sacred Heart of Jesus His heart s designs forever stand, From age to age his loving plan, That he may save their souls from death, In famine save their life and breath. Suggested tune: old 100th The Great Feasts of the Year Throughout the year the Church keeps festival on great days commemorating the mysteries of our salvation. The most important of these can never be omitted, even when the scheduled date falls on a Sunday. In these cases the Sunday texts, including the antiphons, give way to these celebrations. 6 The Sundays of Ordinary Time The entrance antiphons for the Sundays in Ordinary Time are not closely tied to a theme for the day, or to the readings of the day. Rather, they are bold expressions of faith. Sometimes they resemble the antiphons for Easter, rejoicing in salvation. Much more often, however, they are like the antiphons for Lent, expressing trust in God and a need for help. Throughout the year, the Church expresses its trust and reliance on God for timely help at every moment. The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time To you, O God, shall all bow down, The earth acknowledge your renown. To you, Most High, they shall acclaim And sing the praises of your name. Suggested tune: duke street The Third Sunday in Ordinary Time O sing a new song to the Lord. All earth sing out with one accord. With him are majesty and light.
