3 JANUARY 15, 2012 ~ THE SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Thoughts For The Week Dear Sisters and Brothers, Recently I read of an experiment that took five ordinary people, three women, two men, living their fast and busy day-to -day lives, and put them into a Benedictine monastery for eight days, and invited them to live in silence. They took away their mobile phones, their radios and televisions, and invited them to enter a silent world. They furnished them with a counsellor, for a one-hour daily meeting, but otherwise invited them not to speak with one another, or anybody else, for the duration of the week. What happened was very surprising and very inspiring. At first there was resentment and resistance to this stupid religious world. Plans were made to escape down to the local pub, and secret rendezvous were made to indulge in the glorious business of talking. But, slowly and surely, the participants sank into the silence of the abbey, and into the silence of their own hearts, and they found that they wanted to stay there. In the silence they began to explore their own lives, and they felt that they were not alone as they did so. The counsellor helped them to unravel their thoughts and feelings, and encouraged them on the spiritual journey they had embarked on. Back in the silence the participants began to speak to God, and to hear God s voice guiding them in their thoughts and reflections. When the week was over, the five individuals took silence out with them into their worlds, and each one of them felt tremendously changed, and energized for the journey of their life. In our Old Testament Lesson today, we hear about a young boy, Samuel, brought up in the house of the priest Eli. He thought he heard his master calling him, but eventually he was instructed how to answer the call. It was God who was calling to him, and Samuel was to reply, Speak, for your servant is listening. From that day and from that experience of hearing the voice of God within, Samuel grew up to be a great prophet, and, we are told that the Lord didn t permit any word of [Samuel s] to go unfulfilled. Those who listen carefully to the word of God will also speak their own words with great care. Such speech has power to reach not only to the human ear and mind, but it even penetrates to the human heart. When heart speaks to heart, the world will know the power of peace. Such impressive speaking was the main event down by the waters of the River Jordan, where the John the Baptist was gathering crowds, come to listen to his powerful words. He was clearly leading up to something, as he prepared people for someone who was to come. When that someone came, John gave him a piercing look, and told the two of his own disciples who were standing with him, There he is. The man they then followed, like two private eyes, was Jesus from Nazareth, who turned round and asked them directly, What do you want? What they wanted was to know all about him. On that day, they began their education. It would occupy them for the rest of their lives. Listening to this man, they knew that they had struck gold. As the Jerusalem police would say at a later date, Never before has anyone spoken like this one. Finding Jesus of Nazareth is never a one-time event. It is a lifelong engagement. Each day we are invited to say to the Lord, Where do you live? Each day the Lord will reply, Come and see, for there is much to learn and much to find out. How can we ever say that we know the Lord? Our lives would indicate that we know very little and we understand less. But every new day is a fresh opportunity to seek the Lord and to say, Speak, for your servant is listening. All our human relationships can demonstrate this activity of listening and speaking. We can practice a true respect for ourselves, and for one another. Any casual using of one another is unworthy of us as children of God. St Paul speaks to the Corinthians about that in our New Testament Lesson. Honest and open involvement with one another is the way to life. We do not know all the answers to all the challenges of life. But at least we can live the questions in an open and honest way. Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. In your charity, pray for the sick and the lonely visit them if you can. Also, please remember to pray for all who have wandered from the faith, and all who have died. May God always be pleased with us! 4 JANUARY 15, 2012 We are a Stewardship Parish Offertory Collection for Jan. 8, $8, Poor Box for Jan. 8, 2012 $86.35 Thank you and God bless always Baptisms Baptisms are celebrated each month on the first Sunday at the noon Mass as well as the second, third, and fourth Sundays at 1:30pm. There are no baptisms during Lent. Arrangements must be made in advance and new parents are required to take a Baptism Preparation class which is held on the 2nd Saturday of each month at 10:00am with Deacon Conrad in the Church Meeting Room. Sponsors & Godparents If you are 18 years or older, you must register as an adult and be Confirmed in the Catholic Church. If you are married, your marriage must be recognized by the Church. This is especially important if you wish to be a Sponsor for Confirmation or Godparent. It takes 6 months of attending Mass to be eligible for both of these privileges. Marriages The common policy of marriage requires that arrangements be made at least One Year before the date of marriage and before any social plans are made. Either the bride or groom must be a registered parishioner. Weddings may be scheduled for Friday afternoon, Saturday morning or afternoon, or Sunday afternoon ceremony only. Wedding Masses are not celebrated on Sunday s. PARISH NURSES CORNER WANTED! WHO: Nurses, members of the health care profession or those with a spirit of sharing and helping others. No phone calls please. January in our schools, used to be a very quiet month. When Catholic Schools Week was created in the 1970 s, January became an important and busy month. We had CSW activities plus the events that showed up in January. I would like to list just a few of the activities we are considering for January We prepare our news items for the Bulletin a week in advance so it will be ready for the weekend Masses - so - last week we had: A Prize Giving Assembly with Books and other items on the 10th according to the Reading Hours the students and their parents employed. A SAC (School Advisory Council) Meeting on 12th to discuss what we can do to better the various areas and activities held in our school and to add new ideas. A prayerful celebration for St. Lucy Filippini's Birthday on the 13th, to honor our Foundress on her birthday and to review and imitate her virtues and her methods of working in a classroom - as a teacher and as a student. This coming week and following week: - Most schools will be celebrating a Holiday on he 16th and some schools will gather their teachers and have a Professional Day. St. Ann School and some neighboring schools will spend most of their day discussing some methods of teaching or studying, which will embellish their school activities and events. On the evening of the 18th, the Winter Wonder Meeting will take place at the Diocese for parents who generously give their time to the Home-School Associations in our Catholic Schools. On the 19th, our Knights of Columbus will visit our 8th Graders. They will have the first of three Spelling Bees for this year - winners for our School. Additional Spelling Bees will follow until we reach the highest winner. On the 20th, the last day of this first semester, the 7th & 8th Graders will enjoy a school dance at St. Ann's with friends from other Catholic Schools. On the 22nd, a group of Parents and Students will visit Sending Parishes to speak to interested families about our School and to invite them to visit us on Open House Days. On the following Wednesday, January 25th, we will have an Open House from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. which includes entertainment by our students, a description of the activities in our school, a walk-though the school, and an opportunity to speak to the teachers. Other Open Houses will take place on Sunday, January 29th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and also on Wednesday, February 1st from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. We welcome you to visit our school and hope that your children or grandchildren will join us. They are most welcome."
